Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:29 PM PDT I'm an idiot. I brought a coffee to my big4 interview. I'm so used to having a giant cup of coffee in the AM and it was a new city. I didn't want to get lost looking for a quad shot espresso before our breakfast. Every morning I drink a giant espresso drink before my normal day at work and school and I could already tell I wasnt feeling all too myself that morning. I didn't have time to finish it before the interview but honestly who cares why I did it. I knew better and the nerves got the best of me and having read this insight to interviewing before, I completely forgot. I'm hoping there is another idiot out there who did the same thing and still got the job or internship but feel free to tell me this came off as awful and I blew it. I am so mortified a myself. For people who got accounting degrees before the 2008 crisis, what was it like? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:12 PM PDT I'm going to school for accounting (senior, planning to shoot for masters/cpa). I was expecting a lot of math, management, and finance type stuff, but one thing that's really surprised me is how much I have to learn about the 2008 crisis. EVERY class, EVERY textbook has been rewritten to include a discussion about why it happened or how to prevent another major crash. While I know it was a significant event, I'd say 20-30% of every class is devoted to it. So for those of you who graduated pre-2008, what were some major economic/historical events you had to learn about? Were there any practices or techniques you were taught that you couldn't use because of the possible economic consequences? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Nov 2018 10:27 AM PDT Just curious to see what's normal. I feel like "CPA" is kinda hoity toity, but "accountant" is an understatement, almost synonymous with "bookkeeper." What do you say? [link] [comments]
Accounting: Idiot's Guide (help pls) Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:35 PM PDT Ok, so I wanted to be a chef my entire life because I loved food. I then switched to being a restaurant manager because they make more and I am a very organized person who likes to control things. Then I decided, catering manager because they don't deal with 12 hour or more days. I felt like this was getting boring and it wasn't my passion. Talked to a girl at my job and she told me about how her mom is an accountant and she makes 100k in the city she works. It really intrigued me and I switched my entire major. Which is crazy but I never dreamed of being one. I was dead set on being something in the food industry since birth. But, I calculate my finances 24/7 and math has been my favorite subject since <birth> and I have always been curious about accounting but never thought I could do it. I gave myself the biggest pep talk and now I am starting accounting as a sophomore in college but the thing is I don't know anything about this field. I really really like my financial accounting class and never enjoyed reading something and actually remembering it. Like when I was learning about like revenue and net income, I was like getting excited and shit. Idk weird. And I get happy to like go to class to show what I've learned. Idk its so weird. Anyways (sorry for long post), i want to know how to make it in the accounting world. A lot of people in this thread say its boring, go do CS or Engineering but I really don't want to, I don't think accounting is that bad. Also, they say do big 4, get experience, leave, etc. But then some get jobs from places that have nothing to do with it but love it because its "near accounting or accounting related". What is a realistic plan? How much do you make out of college? What kind of jobs can you get with an accounting degree? What is the CPA.. Do I really need it? Should I start taking more classes now to get 150 credit hours for this CPA? Please give me a breakdown. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:52 PM PDT I know an important part of being a good auditor and a good firm is having an in depth understanding of your client's business and knowledge of the industry. But for first year associates and interns, what form does this knowledge and value take and how does it develop? I know generally interns aren't expected to know anything except for how to learn and absorb through experience but what kind of knowledge does an associate have about a business that the intern is clueless on? And that the Manager has that an associate would be clueless on? In general what things about a particular business/industry does the audit firm know that adds that expertise value to the audit? If its relevant, I'm a first semester graduate student in the MS Accountancy program and still going for internships in Auditing and forensics. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments]
When do firms start recruiting/advertising for Fall internships? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:43 PM PDT B4 does fall recruiting for spring/summer interns, which is months in advance, so I was wondering what the case is for fall internships. [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Nov 2018 10:19 PM PDT I'm assuming Big4 probably provide the best formal training? Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm wondering which ones give best formal training outside of the big4 though. [link] [comments]

Transfer request before or after internship? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:28 PM PDT Hey all, I received an offer for an internship in a high COL city (NYC) that is far from my current hometown. I've weighed my options and I feel that being closer to my current location would be more ideal. The area that I'd like to transfer to is also a larger high COL city. How do I request for a transfer? Should I complete my internship and wait to see if I am accepted as a full time hire, then ask for a transfer? Or is it better to ask prior to accepting the internship? Thanks for your input. Studying CPA exam while unemployed, can i pass in 2.5 months? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:02 PM PDT Im considering becoming unemployed for about 2.5-3 months to pass the CPA exam because i learn better by doing something all at once instead of little bits over a prolonged period of time. Do you think this is a pretty reasonable goal if i study about 45-50 hours a week? I see a lot of people say that the exams only take around 80-120 hours of study depending on which exam it is, so i should theoretically be able to take an exam about every two-thee weeks. Homework Help. This Doesn't Make Sense Right? Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:33 PM PDT So I got this question in a homework, but I just can't grasp what is supposed to be the answer. The question: What is investment expense in accounts receivable? I might be wrong and just overthinking this, but I am blank when trying to come up with something that reflects this situation, maybe you could help me out. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:48 AM PDT The calendar has flipped to November so that means it's last licks for people looking for a job in industry before busy season. One of those people is me. I moved on to round two of interviews for a F250 Company. This time, I'll be interviewing with the VP and SVP of Accounting (the leaders of the Big 4 alumni club that makes up this department I'm shooting for). What is everyone else up to today? [US] I talked to a career counselor, and she asked for several unreasonable things. Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:28 PM PDT I decided to study to become an Accounting major for several reasons, with demand being the top one. After a bunch of nagging on the influences within my life, I went to see a career counselor at my university, under the pretenses she could help me out when it came to resumes and etc. She used to work for KPMG, before deciding to settle with university for whatever reason, and it's obvious that she knows what she's talking about. Only thing is, she went on about how she wanted me to get straight A's for the remaining semester and the next. I've always been more of a B student, so I can't really tell if this is because she thinks I'm trying to aim for the top 4 or what, as I've only spoke to her twice in person. But it seems very unreasonable, as I'm currently taking Auditing I, and after every exam, my professor shows the scores on the board. Someone getting a C has been pretty consistent, and there's only like three exams, so whatever math she's doing, ironically doesn't check out, assuming they're dealing with similar in other classes. What I want the most out of being an Accountant, is having what I consider stable for the life of a bachelor, which would be making at least a yearly income of 40k. Which is what my parents and such currently make, and I've been raised pretty okayish. The second thing this career counselor asked of me, is to find 5 auditors of a specific criteria. English isn't my first language, and she feels that I'd be able to relate/connect to them more, if I find these auditors. She also says that she could get me an internship, which would practically be paid because I qualify for work study. Thing is, I've tried Linked In (Which had limited viewing) and etc. but couldn't find a database or anything. Went back to meet with her and she says that until I can find these specific auditors, I can't meet with her beyond Wednesdays, where I'll be introduced to her mentor. Went on about how I had to do old fashioned research to find these people, which seems like a typical "what do you hate about people" kind of thing to push on me. My aunt is an accountant, and I've asked for her help about this, but her English isn't the best, and she wasn't really any help. Didn't understand why this lady wanted me to find specific auditors, despite telling her she works for the university and etc. Her only advice to me was that I should talk to another career counselor, since I told this lady I wanted more personal resume help that a resume workshop can't give, but she never actually counseled me on that.
