Job title and duties changed after I accepted position Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:07 AM PDT About a week ago i accepted a new position through a staffng agency. When i agreed to the position it was "mechanical engineer" and i would be reporting to the COO. My duties were pretty typical for an entry level to midlevel engineer. During my interview the GM came to speak to me about where he sees the company going and how he wants to innovate their stagnant product. However, it was never said that i would be heading that entire push. So my first day the GM is gone and the COO tells me i would be reporting directly to the GM. Ok thats strange but no big deal. Well yesterday i get called into the weekly sales meeting and the GM introduces me as Innovations engineer. Ok wtf thats not my title. He tells everyone that im single handedly spear heading a massive project from scratch. That im "unofficially a product manager". After the meeting he lays out a completely different list of duties than previously agreed upon. Which tbh id love to do. But my pay doesnt reflect that at all. I feel like im nearly 40% underpaid as just ME. Id love some solutions here. EDIT Relevant information: 6 month contract to hire with a staffing agency. In my paperwork and emails from the staffing agency post and pre interview my title is Mechanical Engineer with relevant ME duties. I have 4 years of engineering experience and 18 months of project estimating experience. I would say Im 5-10% underpaid @ 67k/yr according to the Austin market. I know I impressed the GM in my interview but according to my recruiter, my role and duties were not amended after the interview. So I accepted the position @ the 67k not thinking much of it. They are scrapping an old product line and want me to completely revamp it using market research and etc. I know its a great opportunity, but if you guys have taught me anything its never expect loyalty from an employer. So they are essentially getting the work of a Product manager for below the price of a ME and could not even bring me on board at the end of 6 months. EDIT EDIT Im 28 and not married. Update- I spoke with my recruiter about the situation. I asked her to send me the job description she has on file. My GM has came into my office twice today to assure me how great of an opportunity this is. Like he is trying to sell me on it. They already booked me for an out of town trip for a convention which kind of makes me feel like they are trying to invest in me. I am seriously on the fence about this. [link] [comments] |
My dog, who passed away in 2011, just received a credit card offer. What do I do now? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:05 PM PDT I'm guessing someone stole her name/identity. She didn't have a social security number, because you know, she was a dog. Is there something I need to do to make sure someone isn't going to rack up a bunch of debt in her name and stick us with it? [link] [comments] |
[NV] Does my spouse's student loan debt (280k) affects buying a house? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:12 PM PDT My wife and I (first-time buyers) would like to buy a house soon, ideally before our lease ends in January. It's a big desition and we are scared to do mistakes, but we know it's the best option for us. The thing that she is very concerned about having a mortgage on our name could affect her loan repayment or worse, could affect the ability to request for the desired amount on the mortgage. How should we proceed? Can the mortgage be on my name only and but have her income included for the mortgage? Where it's the best place to search for a mortgage? Is Rocket Mortgage reliable? What interest rate will be considered fair for our credit score? Is the best way to go through a realtor to take care of all of this? Here some background info: I am M30, moved to the US 2 1/2 years ago, HS diploma, living in Las Vegas NV, working PT making 55k (by the end of next year should go up 20-25% by becoming FT), no health insurance until FT, No CC debt, Credit score is 766. My wise is F40, US citizen, College degree, working 25-35h at 17$ per hour, pays for both health insurance, No CC debt, Credit score mid 500. Recently consolidated 2 big student loans from collection and put them into one (281k + 1.9k interest at 7.25% and income based on last year taxes). From January she is also enrolling in Nursing school (1st year she will still working during pre-nursing, then going FT school for the next 2/3 year without working) so eventually her she will be the breadwinner and also could potentially ask for loan forgiveness (as a medical student). No kids, planning to get a puppy soon, no car payment, 32K in the savings account (willing to use up to 25k for down payment), both of us contributing to 401k with our employer (around 5%), Monthly income net ∼$5000 Current rent $1100 SO student loan $46 (income based) Internet $70 Gas+electicity $100 Phone plan $90 Fuel $250 Auto & motorcycle insurance $110 Groceries $500/600 Dining out $500 [link] [comments] |
Bank accidentally deposited roughly 20k in my checking account. They refuse to take it out. Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:22 AM PDT I was shocked to see an unexpected roughly $20,000 show up in my account. I told the teller that something was wrong, and she disagreed. She said she saw no evidence it wasn't mine. She asked if I was missing something. I had to brickwall any suggestions that this was my money, until they finally agreed that something may have gone wrong. Thing is, they won't take the money back. So now, I have $20,000 that I'm responsible for that isn't mine. I'm a bank for my bank! Clearly, if a mistake happens on my end with this money, I'll be liable for it, but a mistake on their end seems something I have to take on the chin. In response, I threatened to close the account, but (get this!) they said if I did that, I'd have to take that money with me. It's a credit Union in MA. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Can I create a bank account without my parents knowing? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:22 AM PDT Hi! So just for some background, I currently have a bank account which is controlled by by parents and they can see what goes in out etc. I am of legal age to create my own bank account, however I dont want them finding out about it. I know banks send out mail and even the card itself they send to your address. I was wondering if there is anyway to avoid this. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:29 PM PDT It's almost open enrollment for health insurance! As someone who hasn't had insurance since February, this is an exciting time. But now that I'm actually browsing these plans I feel like crying. I went through healthcare.gov, which re-directed me to my state's (CO) marketplace site. (connectforhealthco.com). They asked me for my zip code, my gender (F), my birthday (age 23), and whether I use tobacco (No, never have) - and the CHEAPEST plan that came up from the resulting search is $250 / month for basically NO COVERAGE. $7,350 deductible, no copays, basically no assistance until the entire deductible is hit. I know that catastrophic plans are designed not to cover anything but the catastrophes - but paying $250 every month for basically the promise of only having to pay $7,350 in an emergency instead of $30,000 (or whatever?)? With my good health and low income? Now look, I'm pretty new to this - I have never had to shop for healthcare. I have never had to pay for my own. I am learning as I go. And my question is: IS THIS NORMAL? I last visited the doctor 2 years ago. I have never been diagnosed with anything, never taken medications, never broken a bone, never even needed birth control (until now). Now that I'm looking ahead, I was hoping to find a plan that would help me cover things like dental care (wisdom teeth gotta come out), vision (prescription gotta get updated), and birth control. And the regular yearly check up that I've been neglecting. Or, preferably, and at the very least, a plan that would cover any emergencies and be cheap enough that I can pay for that other stuff out-of-pocket. Having to pay $250 baseline and then EVERYTHING ELSE out of pocket seems ridiculous. I am healthy and young and poor and trying to be responsible but this health care system is not doing me any favors. This year I was set to gross $35,000 take-home, but my job just had to drop me to part time 20 hrs/week at $18/hr, so I'm now actually making way less than I was expecting to be able to budget for. I'm going to pick up another job but in the meantime this is what I'm working with. I also live in an expensive cost-of-living area. I did the financial assistance calculator thing and it said I do qualify and can expect to cut probably around $40 off my monthly cost - so only $210 / month for a shit health care plan. I guess that's better than $250. I guess I'm just posting to ask: is that really what I should be expecting to pay each month? If that's just the way it is then I guess that's the way it is, but I have to at least ask. What do other poor, healthy 23-year olds pay? Edit: another major consideration for me right now: I mentioned birth control. I have been waiting until I have health insurance to pursue getting a copper IUD. Out of pocket this costs about $500. I have some savings and would have just gone for it, but two of my friends had very serious complications with the IUD that required emergency room visits. This is rare, but I wanted to be prepared for the worst case scenario - and I definitely can't afford an ER visit without insurance. So this is a big factor. [link] [comments] |
I got tricked by a phishing email Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:57 PM PDT I want to start by saying that I'm not sure if this is the best subreddit to be asking on, but its the first one that comes to mind. I just finished taking a nap and the first thing I happened to check after I woke up was my email. I saw an email from "Apple ID" and of course checked it. It said that my Apple ID information needed updating or it would be deleted. So, being the idiot I am, thought "well I don't want that to happen" and filled out the information as requested. It wasn't until about 30 minutes later that I realized all of the many sketchy things about what had happened. Like, why would Apple need my SSN, credit/debit card info, or why would it only have 3 security questions, (mothers maiden name, drivers license number, and something else just as weird). So, now I'm wondering what I do next. I called my bank and cancelled my card, changed my Apple ID password, email password and a few other accounts using the same email/password, and I called a couple of credit places to freeze my stuff (Experion, Trans Union, and Equifax). Any help is appreciated, thanks [link] [comments] |
I no longer qualify for Financial Aid for school - not even loans. Can I get a loan from my bank? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:03 PM PDT So I've been going to school off and on since 2008. I've changed schools 3 times and changed majors twice. I've always had a job while going to school which has made studying difficult and I've had to retake classes a few times. The school has denied my request to acquire loans this year due to not making "Satisfactory Academic Progress". I get it. On paper, my collegiate career looks horrible. I've finally found a career that I love. I'm so close to finishing school, but paying $4,000 every 16 weeks is killing me ( I'm also no longer eligible for a payment plan for some obscure reason). I've done a "SAP" appeal, but I'm not sure it will get approved. Can my bank give me a loan for school? Or a credit union? My credit is fair, I'm almost done paying off my car and have made all payments on time. I have a credit card with a $1,000 limit that I've had for about 6 years. I haven't always made payments on time with the card, but I've gotten much better in recent years. I'm in the US if that helps. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:59 PM PDT I had to go to the hospital and my bill came out to $2000. When I received the bill, I noticed that my insurance wasn't applied even though I provided the hospital with my insurance info at the time. The bill went into collections and of course tanked my credit score. Recently, I received the updated bill from the hospital showing that my insurance kicked in for that bill and now my patient responsibility is $0. The collections company they sent me to though, is Transworld Systems Inc. I've disputed this with all three credit bureaus and I keep getting letters saying that they've verified that the debt is mine. I'm not trying to dispute the debt was mine, I'm trying to dispute that I owe them anything. How do I go about getting this collection removed from my report? [link] [comments] |
I’m 19 and doing nothing with my life. Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:53 PM PDT I'm 19 and been out of school for almost 2 years. I always said when I get out of high school I would move out my mom house and do something with my life/become something without going to college. I'm still living with my mom and doing nothing with my life making $0 right now. Me and my mom always arguing almost every single day because she know I'm not doing nothing with my life and have no money to myself. I do sell on eBay here and there almost every month just to have something in my bank but I've never had over $1000 in my life. I have never worked, every time I look for work nobody want to hire me I been applying for almost 1 year and nothing. It's so hard to find a job for me. I always wanted to become a photographer/videographer/fashion/design or something to do with remodeling houses,I have so much potential I swear to god, but you know...for all that you need money. I feel like I'm never going to become something because all I do all day 24 fucking 7 is sit in my room till morning and night and be depressed. I've been depressed because sometimes you think deeply in life and see what you doing. Sometimes I be saying to myself what am I doing with my life?, I should join the military. Then the negative thoughts, if you know what I mean. I have so much potential but I honestly don't know how to even start it. I am now thinking of going to college just to get out the house and do something but I also don't want to be in debt with school and I honestly don't want to do the college or military because none of that shit is for me. Honestly I'm just tired of doing absolutely nothing with my life. I also need to control what I'm doing with the money I get from eBay, I be buying jewelry, clothes, games just shit I don't even need to make myself happy and then go back to $0 on my account. I could've been have a camera by now if I didn't spend it on the wrong things. I told myself to stop doing this. For me it's always hard to save because we always want something if you know what I mean, but I honestly told myself to stop and I will get it in the future and just to keep saving and saving, If y'all have any advice for me please let me know and I'll make sure to always be aware of it and keep it with me. Should I stop living below my means? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:01 PM PDT I'm 24, single, 65k salary, 80k saved, drive a 10 year old camry, pay $500 in rent living in my parent's rental property located in the worst neighborhood with crime and crazy people. with two roommates (one roommate is my parents who come to visit whenever they want and I feel our relationship is growing toxic living like this). I'm feeling unmotivated at work because I know if I ever get fired or my boss says anything I don't want to do I can just quit because I have so much saved and my expenses are so low. BUT, I hate having roommates, want my own place but am always afraid the next recession is around the corner or I'll get fired or something. I sold a house I owned (had two roommates there too that paid my entire mortgage and utilities) this year because I do not plan on living in my state for long. Possibly move to a coast in the next 1-2 years. Need to bounce ideas with you all. I was listening to a podcast and heard I'd be more motivated to work harder at my job and career if I actually live on my own (I'm thinking of getting a luxury apartment ($1,500 a month including utilities) and getting a $20,000 used Honda Ridgeline 2011 RTL or another luxury car. My questions are: 1) living on my own would be more expensive, a lot fewer savings, but I'll have more confidence in having my own place (not having roommates and have a nice car), is it worth it? I just feel I'm not respecting myself living like this. 2) for the car people, I want a car I can offroad with, should I buy a 2011 Honda Ridgeline RTL ($18,000)? I've seen Honda and Toyota are the most reliable cars on this subreddit. I will be using this car to drive to work and the grocery store 95 percent of the time. [link] [comments] |
Good tools, apps, or general resources for tracking and controlling grocery spending? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 02:41 PM PDT I make pretty good money and save appropriately. My husband used to provide some income while a student/research assistant. We got used to not really watching/tracking our spending as long as we stayed within a certain monthly budget (i.e. as long as I still met my saving goals, we didn't really pay much attention to bills.) However, we had a kid, and my husband graduated but hasn't found a job yet, so we lost his small income, and now I find I'm having a hard time meeting my monthly savings goals. I decided to audit our monthly finances and realized we're spending about twice what we should be on groceries every month! I have no idea how we're spending this much. We don't have particularly fancy tastes, we don't buy organic or "natural" products, mostly store brands, but I suspect my husband is buying more pre-packaged food/meals than I realize. We have some food waste, mostly fresh produce, but not that much. I want to figure out where we're spending more than is typical but the idea of manually logging every item we purchase into a spreadsheet seems impossibly time consuming. Are there any good apps or tools for this? Something that I could scan my receipts into or something like that? We mostly shop at Kroger, occasionally Trade Joes, and my husband occasionally at Whole Foods, though that's going to be the first thing I request he stop doing. I know Kroger tracks everything we buy but I don't know if there's any way to access that information. Also, any good meal planning resources that you like? We mostly decide what to make on the fly, and so as a result there's a lot of last minute trips to the grocery store. If we could plan better to consolidate our trips, that would just be an added bonus! [link] [comments] |
Ideas to pay down my large debt Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:37 PM PDT My wife and I are in our late 20s. We have 3 kids, and a LOT of debt. My wife and I are fully aware we have bad money management skills. We are realizing how bad with how we are in more debt now then a few years ago and we have been "trying" to pay it down. Either something comes up (car breaks down, we forget about car insurance or car license tags are due, other emergencies) or something comes out that I usually want to buy. We have 12 credit cards, all are maxed out. It totals to about $49,000. We have a credit card consolidation loan of $9,100 (This was our first time around of trying, it obviously didn't work out). We both have car loans, each of us have about $13,000 left on the loan. We recently got a judgment against us for $1900 from an old landlord we forgot about from a few years ago. We owe the IRS $4100 because we got audited and didn't claim enough income. We also owe $134,000 in student loans between the 2 of us. 12 credit cards = $49,000 total 2 cars = $26,000 total Credit card consolidation loan = $9,100 Judgment = $1,900 IRS = $4,100 Student Loans = $134,000 Writing this out, I have no clue how we let it get this bad. We make a decent wage for our area. We net on average $6,800 a month after taxes. The problem is, we can only afford to pay the minimums on everything so nothing ever gets paid off. My wife and I finally discussed bankruptcy and getting a fresh start but we can't even really do that. Our income is a couple thousand over the median income for a family of 5 and since we don't own a house, we are far away from passing the means test. If we did chapter 13, our disposable income was calculated to be $2,800 every month which is really no different then what we're already doing, only difference being that in 5 years, everything would be discharged. This is probably a stupid idea but we also talked about just stop paying all unsecured debt and focus on one card at a time and focus on getting rid of the small balance cards first. I figure the late fees on the small balance fees would cost more then the interest on the high balance cards. We would appreciate any help. We make decent money and everyones happy but we're not making progress. Thanks Edit: Added full month budget

Posted: 30 Oct 2018 07:23 PM PDT Hey everyone I just got this text "TopUp Confirmation: Your Request to Top-Up $10 on 2348033032350 was successful. Thank You for business with Raza Communications." My discover card info was just stolen and I ordered a new card. Just activated my new one yesterday and just got this text message today... What should I do? My discover account doesn't have it as a pending transaction yet. Edit: I googled the text and didn't find anything about it being a widespread scam. I'm very concerned about how it could happen so fast (my discover card is the only credit card I have so I know for a fact it's this card). [link] [comments] |
Paid off nearly all debt, then was diagnosed with acute leukemia and fired from my job. Posted: 30 Oct 2018 05:53 AM PDT My wife and I paid off our Car loan after only 12 months. Credit cards all were at 0 except one at $2,500. We were almost there. Then I was diagnosed with acute leukemia and hospitalized for a month. I had just changed jobs to Removed but because I was so new I was still in the probationary period they decided to just let me go. (Contact us when you are cleared for work! Thanks assholes. ) Anyway, we have $3,000 in cash, and I applied for SSDI and Utah's local assistance programs which give $498 cash each month and $350 in food stamps. SSDI will be $1,195 per month but the lawyer said not to expect an approval until June of next year. Medicare is providing insurance for the cancer treatment and thankfully has no deductible so it's actually way better than the insurance I had while working. Our debt is pretty manageable. We have also been paying off our house early. So the payments are only $400 per month. (We usually paid 1500-2000 each month.) Our cell phones are $100 Gas $60 Electricity $150 Water $55 HoA $50 Internet $50 Car insurance $105 And $2500 on one credit card $100 a month My wife cant start working because she needs to watch our infant (10 months old) and I will be in the hospital another 2-3 months for a bone marrow transplant soon. I unfortunately do not have life insurance. I lost it when I switched jobs, there is about a 60% chance of me surviving a year. And about 50-50 if I'll be cured. [link] [comments] |
Looking to buy a ring and I need some advice on how to go about it Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:50 PM PDT So I'm currently finishing up my last semesters of schooling and I work a part time job for $12 an hour. This is enough to get me by in terms of bills. However, I'm looking to marry my best friend, and I need to figure out how to purchases a quality ring. I can comfortably gather $150 dollars extra per month, but I would like to know what other options I can follow. [link] [comments] |
Risks on combining finances while not married? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 06:34 PM PDT Hello PF! My boyfriend is planning on moving into my current apartment, and we have been talking about engagement (at least another 6 months until anything happens though). We have talked about doing a yours, mine and ours system for handling finances. We'd each have our own emergency funds to take care of ourselves should anything unexpected happen. I have 1 month of living expenses and will bump it up more after paying off debt, and my boyfriend with his only expense as gas (lives rent free with parents) has 20k saved. My boyfriend is looking into buying a car in cash with a portion of that. Monthly mandatory expenses are about $2,000 for rent, utilities and internet. We're guessing another $1,000 for groceries, dog expenses, phone plan (him joining my plan), dates, etc. The estimate is a bit high, but some months are more than others (ex. Surprise vet bills, holidays, etc.). I'd use my personal account to work on debt and throw an extra $1000/month at it in addition to my monthly fun allowance. After contributing to the communal account, he is also free to do whatever with his money. I make 74k and he makes 60k. We're in an expensive-ish cost of living area. Are there any risks to combining finances/holes in our plan we haven't considered? We wanted to protect ourselves by only putting $1,500/month in. We'd keep everything else separate until marriage. Any benefits we can get that I may not be thinking of? [link] [comments] |

I'm a teenager looking to invest my money. What are my options? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:47 PM PDT Hi there r/PersonalFinance. I'm not quite sure this is the best sub to put this on, but I feel like I'm wasting my money on stupid things and feel the need to invest it somehow. It's also important to note that I'm a minor living in America. What are my options? I just want want to do something more productive with my income rather than continue to buy things I don't need. I'd rather reinvest that money into funding my own business than saving it at the very least. I'd be happy to provide any more information you guys might need. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Am I paying too much for my first house? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:20 PM PDT I make $16 an hour and get maybe 5 hours of overtime a week, though I could get more if I wanted My wife makes $10 an hour 40 hours a week. Combined that's around $4,160 a month before taxes. The only bills we have to pay is our car insurances, which are $100 a month each. We're buying a brand new 3 bed 2 bath 1,300 sq ft house for $208,900 or $1,850 a month. We don't have to pay any closing costs or put any money down. That includes property taxes ($364), homeowners insurance ($60.93), as well as a fridge, oven, microwave, and a 1 year warranty for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical), as well as a 10 year warranty for foundation and framing. This area is in Liberty Hill which is right outside of Austin, Texas, & is going to be increasing in development. Am I paying way too much? [link] [comments] |
How should I allocate my 401k? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:18 AM PDT I'm 27 and recently started a new job. I'm not too sure if my company's 401k options are great. Right now, its allocated to TRP RETIRE 2055 R (RRTVX) at 1.22 % expense ratio which I don't think its great. Here are my options: I'm thinking about putting based on their performance: 51% - TRP BLUE CHIP GR ADV ( PABGX ) - LARGE CAP 22% - MFS INTL DIVRSN R4 ( MDITX ) - INTERNATIONAL 27% - LD ABT SH DTN INC A ( LALDX ) - BOND Edit: Thanks Everyone. I'm going for 100% ishares S&P500. I used the 100-minus-your-age rule and I didn't know many people disapprove it for young investors. [link] [comments] |
Helped a relative pay their credit card bill, now the credit card is on my credit report Posted: 30 Oct 2018 04:27 PM PDT I looked at my credit report because I'm trying to get a mortgage to buy a house for the first time and it's showing credit card accounts that aren't mine. It's not a matter of identity theft or anything crazy like that. A few years ago my parents needed help with bills so I paid a few different credit cards for them, a few times. Just the minimum. I am not an account holder, I'm not anything, I just paid a few times. Well now they're showing up on my credit report and my assets and debts put me at negative net worth. Are these debts mine now? If so, how does that work? How did paying a credit card affect my credit score? Is there a chance the mortgage will be denied? Will the underwriter look at my statements and realize I am not paying those other credit cards monthly and that it's an error and contact me? Very anxious. Anything on this, or advice on what an underwriter looks at would be helpful Thanks [link] [comments] |
What can jobs find out about you through background check? Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:13 PM PDT I had an interview with a job last week and everything went great. I didn't lie on my application when I filled it out there however there was one detail I left out, that I went to a university for a year before attending my local community college. I told my mother and she let me know jobs can find basically anything about you as long as it's on paper. Is that true? TIA [link] [comments] |
