It's moronic Monday, your chance to ask any of those lingering questions without fear of harassment.

We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Anyone willing to share their success stories?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 12:21 PM PDT

I don't expect many responses because financial information is very personal, but are there any brave souls willing to tell us their net worth or investment gains (not exact numbers, but ballpark ranges) and explain how they achieved that success?

    Thanks.

The majority of my investments are with vanguard. If I want to continually dollar cost average into a US equity index, is there any benefit to continuing with Vanguard over making future contributions to Fidelity ZERO fee funds?

At my new job I will be getting paid in stock options, how should I evaluate their value?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:56 PM PDT

Disclaimer: They are also paying me a livable salary, acceptable benefits, and I love the work.

It is a tech startup that is 5 years old and has been turning a profit for the past year. I will be their 6th employee (not counting the 20 sales guys). They are in negotiations with multiple larger companies and plan to accept a buy-out in the next year or two.

I will be negotiating soon and I have no idea how to evaluate stock options. Is there anything I should expect or ask for, I have no experience in this area and any guidance would be appreciated.

Edit: I should have added that my investing vocabulary is small. I have a business minor and minimal investing experience. Any links to where I could learn more would be great.

Would it be a bad idea to invest my emergency fund in a total bond market index fund?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:30 PM PDT

I am planning on keeping about 1 month of expenses in a savings account so that I can use if needed. I'll keep another 5 months worth of expenses in a total bond index fund so that it grows more than if I were to keep it in a savings account. Would this not be a good idea? I would most likely make more than I would in a high yield savings account. I'm young so naturally I'm not super risk averse.

Favorite sector of stocks besides for technology?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 11:09 PM PDT

I always feel that the technology sector is always experiencing some time of new competition, innovation, that never seems to end. I was wondering what's good long term sectors to invest in for a 5-10+ year range?

Correlation between US Treasury Yields and Stock Market

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 03:43 AM PDT

I'm trying to understand the correlation between the two...

    Correct my reasoning

Bond yields are inversely proportional to bond prices, and bond prices are inversely proportional to stock prices

    Bloomberg article: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-08/asia-stocks-poised-to-decline-yuan-under-pressure-markets-wrap

The 10 Year US Treasury yield hit a 7 year high yet the stock market declined.

Cannot understand the underlying reasoning? Is this signalling the top of the market? If yields are high (and bond prices are low), shouldn't stocks go even higher?

Mohamed El-Erian: The US economy looks 'good' for the 'next couple of years at least'

    Posted: 09 Oct 2018 02:42 AM PDT

The IMF maintained its prediction of 2.9 percent growth for the U.S. this year, but reduced its 2019 American growth prediction from 2.7 percent to 2.5 percent in its World Economic Outlook published on Tuesday.

Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor for Allianz, said the IMF "is too pessimistic" about the world's largest economy.

"It wouldn't surprise me if we get 3 percent growth for this year and next year," he said of the U.S.

    GE dead cat bounce?

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 02:02 PM PDT

Anyone think this rally for GE on the news of a new ceo is just a dead cat bounce or is it an actual turn around? I've considering jumping in for a while now but haven't pulled the trigger because GE is so risky right now

    Question about Ratings Agencies

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 07:38 PM PDT

Apple and Berkshire Hathaway have enough cash on hand to pay off all their debts several times over. Given this, why aren't they rated AAA, while companies like XOM have far more debt to revenue/cash ratios and lower net margins, not to mention being in a highly cyclical business, but enjoy AAA ratings?

Speaking about moody's btw. I read their credit rating process but not much info was revealed that would explain the discrepency

Walk me through an example of stock valuation, please

    Posted: 08 Oct 2018 02:37 PM PDT

Can some generous person please walk me through an example of stock valuation (discounted cash flows, liquidation value, etc.)?

For example, I tried doing a valuation of Home Depot's stock, which has a pretty strong balance sheet and consistent returns. I tried the discounted cash flow method though I must have done something wrong because I ended up with a calculated share price of less than $75, but the stock has been well above that for a long time (right now around $200). I'm going to assume that my evaluation was wrong because that's just too far off.

    Thanks.
