Summer trading/investing posts see here Posted: 01 Jul 2018 02:59 PM PDT Every year a bunch of kids and college students ask the same exact question: Can I make money trading stocks over the summer. The answer is yes, but you specifically won't. A few will get lucky, but you probably won't. Trading is not like playing Fortnite, your skill doesn't increase at a linear or an exponential pace even if you put more time into trading. The market punishes bad trades by taking your money, and then you can't play any longer. No matter how much time you spend watching the market or putting in practice trades, your real trades will get decimated. You'll make the mistake of going all in, you'll pick penny stocks or meme stocks, you'll always buy at the top or you'll buy a falling knife just to see your trade lose value everyday afterwards, you'll buy before earnings and lose double digit % points, you'll buy 3x ETFs and get wrecked the day after with a double digit gap, you'll buy dividend paying stocks with unsustainable yields and you'll lose money, lastly you'll buy OTM calls and they'll expire worthless, and you'll never get better. It takes time & effort to learn so you can be decent at trading, so do this:
As for investing, this involves holding shares for longer than a summer. If you are passionate about the financial markets, then put in the time & effort to learn, and don't expect to make money over the summer for your first time trading [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Jul 2018 05:39 AM PDT I just dont get how the market can honestly keep micron down at this low valuation after it has continually showed people who oppose it to be wrong. Bears have non stop calling for peak cycle since last year and micron just keeps trucking along and even has guided higher than expected yet still trades as one of the cheapest stock in the s&p500 while being one of the most profitable companies out there. With tech moving in the direction it is now, memory is key. Micron has some of the best memory products on the market and is also innovating new products for future tech. They have partnered with many large companies in tech such as Nvidia to create better faster memory solutions. Now bears are using the trade war narrative against micron and micron has immediately responded by saying this hasn't really affected their guidance. So how many more times does micron have to prove bears wrong till it trades at a normal tech p/e. Yes bears cyclical argument sees memory as a commodity that will see a surplus in supply. But demand is out pacing supply and is seen to keep growing due to the direction where tech is moving. Manufacturing memory isn't as easy as it used to be due to cost. Companies cant just set up shop in 6 months and create more supply. Its a long process but as this process is taking place demand is increasing also as more tech needs memory. Plus micron is also a quality manufacturer of memory. They have some of the best products on market. Companies want quality products from suppliers not low quality knockoffs. Micron is placed in a perfect tech ecosystem where memory is king. So what does micron have to do to actually trade at a reasonable p/e? Because as of now they have done all they can and more from what i see. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 08:00 PM PDT Anyone have any ideas of what they think the Sonos stock will debut at price wise? Also will this stock provide dividend or is that too noob of a question? https://www.wsj.com/articles/sonos-files-to-go-public-headed-for-trading-this-month-1530888037 [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Jul 2018 03:44 PM PDT It's starting to look a lot like gold and energy stocks are getting momentum and institutional buy in. They keep coming up on my scanners. Anyone going long on commodities and short on tech just yet? [link] [comments] |

$SQ (Square) vs $MA (MasterCard) Posted: 06 Jul 2018 10:11 PM PDT I'm looking to trim my number of conviction holdings and one obvious place is for me to choose either MasterCard or Square. Both are in the same industry/sector but at very different points in their life cycles. Do I go with MA which is a safe play or SQ which is more unknown with high risk/high reward? Note: I'm 24 so I do have a fair amount of risk tolerance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 09:12 PM PDT Never invested in anything, would movie passed be a interesting investment? The one I'm looking at that I use is for the MoviePass app, thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 03:18 PM PDT I want to diversify my portfolio. I was thinking of an s&p 500 etf. Please give me reccomendations. Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 10:38 PM PDT Hi, I follow HACK and CIBR since quite a while. Couple days ago I discovered CYBR. I like the distribution among the vendors a little bit better so If I go for an etf it would probably that one. CYBR is quite new and from Canada. I never bought an etf yet, is it basically the same process as I would go for single stocks and is it exactly the same for CYBR as it is for HACK? Thanks [link] [comments] |
How much stock should you buy to make a worthy investment? Posted: 06 Jul 2018 09:54 PM PDT I'm a new investor exploring the subject and while I've learned a lot about investing, I'm a bit confused on how much stock you should buy given the stock price, dividend %, etc. I'm looking into stocks priced both high and low and they have random Dividend Percentages. Some as low as around 2%, some as high as 10%, and some with no dividend information at all or a note saying they don't pay dividends (then why invest?). For example, I saw a $40 stock with a dividend percentage which, at that price, would equal $0.50 each, so buying just a single stock seems kind of irrelevant. If I bought 10 of them, it would be a $5 dividend per quarter... That still doesn't seem like a solid investment unless I'm missing something. What confuses me is, given the stock price and the dividend %, if you decided you want stock at a price you like, how do you decide how much stock is worth buying to make it a worthy investment? Posted: 06 Jul 2018 05:21 PM PDT If ETFs are already diversified, wouldn't buying multiple ETFs as part of your portfolio be safe as long as not too many companies overlap or if I were to hold long term? For example, what happens if I bought numerous ETFs like SPY, VOO, VTI, VT, and maybe other funds from different sectors to be safe? I've heard many great things about ETFs but are there certain risks other than expense ratio that make them not as safe? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 09:05 PM PDT I think I"m ready to reup on a new computer - currently using a Macbook pro 15", so I'm considering Dell's sale atm. What monitors do you guys use for the multi monitor setup? I was looking at getting a couple of Dell 27" ultrasharps, but have seen there's surprisingly poor reviews, at least on the Canadian site. I don't really want one of those curved widescreens as it will distort straight lines and I don't currently play games on my computer. Dell doesn't make anything bigger than a 27" in a flat ultrasharp and given my poor vision, I could really use a lot of real estate, not only for multiple charting, but also have things at a comfortable size. What are you guys using? [link] [comments] |
What qualities do you value the most in a stock? Posted: 06 Jul 2018 06:37 PM PDT For me it's sustainability and good leadership at the top of the company. What do you guys look for? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Jul 2018 03:37 PM PDT How does a stock just skyrocket like that over the weekend? I understand stock splits, but this doesn't seem to be that? Thanks [link] [comments] |
