Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:05 PM PDT I am quite certain that in the future, I want to have a clothing line. I am in search of some great manufacturers. I have looked in this sub and like a lot of people on here, I have looked at Alibaba and found what I think is a great manufacturer but I know just 1 manufacturer isn't enough. I plan on creating clothing for girls sizes 6-16, possibly Junior sizes 3-17, and women's regular sizes and plus sizes as well. I might even venture into going into infant girls clothing. Baby Phat by Kimora Lee Simmons, the old Limited Too, Girlfriends LA, Delia's, and Brat labels are all of my fashion inspirations. I went on the Wayback Archive a few years ago and screenshot everything I could on Baby Phat and Limited Too's websites and saved the pictures to help me on what I want for my clothing line. They include what the garments look like and what material they are made out of as well. I guess my questions are 1. How do I go about getting these exact things manufactured? I know I have to make my own graphics but as far as construction could I send in a pic of that item from Baby Phat or Limited Too and then give specifications? 2. Can anyone point me in the direction of some great manufacturers? Yes, I have 1 but I need much more. It doesn't matter where it is at this point but having some more places to look and save clothing would be great right now. 3. I don't plan on starting this clothing line until another 2-3 years. I have a name for it that has not been taken. Should I copyright it now? If so, what steps should I take? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Advice on getting things off the ground Posted: 08 Jul 2018 10:36 PM PDT Hello all, It was because of entrepreneurship and the business mind that got me into learning how to code. I went off and built a web app but never saw the value in it anymore and dropped that. But at least I found that I like to code and building websites/ web apps. People say developers are sought after, I decided to go freelancing but till now haven't found any clients that would pay more than a penny on my services. I had offered help for startups and local businesses but on the condition of equity yet none have grown past the MVP stage! I opted to get a job outside and event that is coming out fruitless. In a nutshell, any tips on finding real business owners that really wants to push their ideas out (not just talking air!). Or is it just me who's gotten the short end of the stick and always ends up with "these" kinds of people. I enjoy working hard, but not getting paid for what I put my time in starts to sting (as you can tell from my rant here). [link] [comments] |
Amateur questions about operating a business (xpost from /r/entrepreneur) Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:27 AM PDT 1) What is the benefit of starting an LLC if you're the only person running your business? 2) If your business stumbles into a slump, how do you pay yourself a salary? Do you just give yourself a pay cut? Also once it does well, do you give yourself a raise? 3) Do businesses have savings accounts and emergency funds? 4) How exactly do you project growth when making a pitch for investors? Do you use your current business strategy as a formula and add the investment to get the potential outcome of their investment? How does that work? 5) Say you have a another job and decide to put your own money into your business. If you're in it with a partner, do you have to buy more stock in your company? Or do you just agree beforehand who owns how much of the company despite how much money each person puts in? 6) Is there software to take taxes out of what you make from your business? Do you file taxes for your business personally, or do you have to do it as the business? Sorry these are noob questions but I never see these asked here. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Engineer Consulting Taxes Michigan Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:25 AM PDT Hello, This last year I decided to take my consulting from a sole proprietorship to an LLC to keep things separate from my main life. It occured to me that I haven't really updated my business structure though and actually have things all registered in the states eyes. I went online to the Michigan Treasury (MTO) to link my business to my account and when I put the business FEIN number it, it says I have to go through the unemployment insurance agency. So I go through all those formats and comes down to the taxes section. So that long background basically came to ask, do I have sales or use taxes for engineering consulting? By engineering consulting I mean that I have clients that want to create a product. I get requirements from them and make the schematic and circuit board design and sometimes build prototypes for them and give that to them. So I am not sure where this falls in the states eyes. Can anyone help? [link] [comments] |
How would you grow the sales pipeline for a software dev agency? Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:24 AM PDT We're a small team of expert software developers. We develop custom software (web apps, mobile apps, etc.) and solve very hard technical challenges. Our clients love our work, and the engineering/project execution side of the business is sound. We struggle to generate qualified leads. One of the challenges I see (and I may be perceiving something that isn't really there - tell me if so) is that we are usually only successful with our prospects when they are at the exact right moment. They need to be planning to build an app, or facing an immediate technical challenge that needs solving ASAP. Not going to list out any of the tactics we currently employ for biz dev because I don't want to bias the thread. If you were us, how would you build prospect lists, initiate contact, and ultimately get to your first meeting? Our close rate is good once we can get a budget- and need-qualified lead on the phone. Ideas for revenue stream or startup Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:50 AM PDT Hey guys! We're a group of students working on a startup for our project. Our startup is an online platform that enables students to make an income by providing soft skill lessons such as cooking or sports to other students. Our teacher is asking for a revenue stream to keep the business afloat. Some ideas we have include commissions, ads and premium accounts. What are your thoughts on this? And are there other revenue streams we can consider exploring? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Creating and enforcing policies without destroying my employee’s souls? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:17 AM PDT I run a business with two employees plus myself. We're small enough that I still do a lot of client work myself, which often involves working on customer sites away from our office - usually for days at a time. It's becoming clear that I need to write up our policies and processes as some tasks (usually the more menial ones) aren't being done properly, and sometimes my employees will decide not to do basic things because they don't think they're necessary, even when they are. (e.g. logging time they spend on projects, which is how we bill clients.) I've spoken with them about these issues, but because we're a small business and I'm not there 24/7, I'm finding it difficult to manage my employees and ensure they stay on top of these more menial tasks. At the moment our processes and policies aren't in writing. We've been finding our feet for a while and I didn't want to cement policies that would need updating immediately. However, it's clear that I need to write this stuff up so it's clear. I don't see the, changing for a while. I'm looking for advice on how to go about doing this without destroying the souls of my staff. Has anyone else been through something similar? What's the best way of introducing and enforcing written policies and procedures? Obviously the ideal solution would be for me to hire someone to do the on-site work so that I can free up my time and be a better manager, but finding someone who can replace me, with my skill set, is more than the business can afford at the moment and would require a significant amount of trust in the person I hire. (We're in a very competitive industry where people often steal clients and a bad hire could easily destroy the business,) Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Distributing contacts to team members, shared account, possibly a basic CRM? Help! Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:17 PM PDT Hi all, so I have just hired my first employee and am working to get him up to speed. We use a mix of android/ios tablets/phones/computers to do our work. I need a central contacts list that syncs between our devices but at the same time keeps our personal ones separate. You should be able to select which account to save the contact to when creating a new contact. I've tried a full-fledge CRM like hubspot but found it overkill for this stage of our business. Can anyone recommend a basic CRM to keep clients tracked? Or can anyone recommend a way to keep business contacts synced between us? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:54 PM PDT Hi everyone, First of all thank you all for reading my post-- I appreciate all helpful criticism. Thanks again! So to start, my small business idea is basically a to be a convenience breakfast supplier to offices, schools, and general workplaces. The basic idea is to leave bagels and a money collection box in a workplace early in the morning, then collect it later after lunch-time. The unique part about this idea is that there would be no one monitoring the bagels, and the payment system would have to be an honor system-- leave one dollar in exchange for a bagel and some cream cheese. For those who are familiar, this was done a little while ago by a man named Paul Feldman which was talked about in the book Freakonomics. I'm just trying to recreate his model myself. side note: This wouldn't be my full-time gig and it's more of a side hustle. I'm a full-time college student with a part-time job but I want another stream of income that's more along the lines of starting a business. This is my dilemma: I'm only 19. I personally feel I would receive a lot of discrimination when pitching my idea to workplaces because of my age. I also have no experience in pitching my idea to a random workplace. I'm definitely capable of being professional, but never for a business pitching idea like this. What do you guys do in order to gain new clients? Should I just go knocking on random offices? Who should I ask to speak with? Thanks for any criticism and advice you guys have to offer. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:59 PM PDT I know this has been asked before but I can't seem to find the specific answer in the search. I'm looking to start a home-based online retail business, as a sole proprietor. In order to register for EIN, DBA, state and local business documents, I would need a physical business address (I live in California). I tried to open up a business PO box and a business mailbox at UPS but they both need me to present them my business license or any documents relating to my business entity. In order to give them my business license, I would have to apply for an EIN, but I don't want to use my home address when applying for it. It seems like the bottleneck in starting my business is obtaining a physical business address. What are some solutions to obtain a physical business address so I could apply for an EIN? Are virtual mailboxes reliable (like mail forwarding time-sensitive packages, e.g customer returns)? Should I just open up a personal USPS PO box or UPS mailbox? [link] [comments] |
Some (basic) tax questions from someone with an ecommerce business... Posted: 08 Jul 2018 06:28 PM PDT Hey guys, I have a dropshipping business that I started in mid 2016 that became a full time job in early 2018. Long story short, I found a winning product and set up a system to the tune of $1M+ in EBITDA YTD so far. The business is set up as a single-member LLC. At the advice of my former accountant (long story), last year I declare the business' net profit as income on my personal return. This year, the profit is considerably higher, so I'm wondering how that changes things. Is it worth it to consider filing as an S-corp this year to "pay myself" less and spare myself some self-employment taxes? Would it be worth it, given my current liability on $1M+ gross profit? I would like to defer or avoid as much tax liability as possible. My intention is to reinvest all profits into the business, not take profits as personal income. I'm already made 2x quarterly estimated tax payments this year (over $200k, based on what QuickBooks suggested). The business is based in New York. I also pay NY sales tax. My understanding is that I'll eventually be responsible for remitting in all 50 states, per the Supreme Court ruling. Any thoughts on this? Thanks guys, really appreciate your time and consideration here. I am in the market for a new accountant, but would love the opinions of you seasoned veterans. [link] [comments] |

Managing a physical mailbox online, without changing your address? Posted: 08 Jul 2018 02:22 PM PDT So I found Earth Class Mail and all 100 of its competitors that offer pretty much the exact same thing. But what if I don't want a new address? All of these services give you a bunch of addresses you can pick from, and I don't want that. I work from home, but I have a physical (warehouse type) location that I use as my "business" location. I get outrageous amounts of physical mail, to a point that my mailbox is full every single day, and I don't usually get out there more than once a week or so. My mail carrier leaves me all sorts of wonderful notes all the time about it. So I don't want to change my address, its still a legit address and I do get some checks and whatnot mailed to me there. Is there a service ( or is it even legal to offer one ) that WONT give me a new address but will somehow intercept my mail and scan it? No, I don't want to use more than one business address. Purchasing a domain then creating Site Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:53 PM PDT Hey so I need some advice. After doing research and checking out different hosts, I've decided to go with Wordpress & was planning on purchasing my domain through Namecheap. I'm a little confused because... •Do I have to purchase all of the add-ons? I contacted the support but I feel like she was just trying to upsale. Basically, my domain is 10 a year plus the extra for ssl I was planning on purchasing. • Support then gave me two sites to purchase a shared-hosting plan along with the domain or they set me up with a Wordpress site. Both of these include the original $10 fee then the extra for either host. • Is it recommended I just go through the Wordpress site & buy the domain from them for more? Basically I'm confused as to which domain I should be purchasing to start setting up my site. Any advice appreciated & thank you. [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on where to go from Manufacturing Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:21 AM PDT Hey all! I've recently come up with a small gadget/product which I designed myself. It's about the size of a thumb, and just consists of one piece. When people see it they tell me to sell it so that's what I'm about to do and I'm super excited! I'm not sure whether I'm in the right spot to ask these questions but I hope someone can help me hop on the train :) This is my fist time doing something like this and I'm quite lost on where to start. I figured out that I will be able to find a Manufacturer via Alibaba.com and it will be relatively cheap to produce. I don't know where to go from here. As in I have no idea what to google for or whom I can safely talk to. I mean I should be sure that I can sell the product before I start mass producing it, right? What do I need to prepare? __ tl;dr So my concrete question would be: Where do I find advice on the steps, from contacting a manufacturer to having the product be sold in (online)stores? What books can I read and where can I ask for help? Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:29 AM PDT Throw away here for starters. I have a business that is doing about 800k+ per year, and I'm wanting to sell to pay off debt from a separate business (would be completely debt free if I were to sell). Profit was about 60k last year after salary. It's a restaurant/entertainment business in an already popular, but extremely booming area. I believe revenue will only grow from here on out. Profits are still good, but I'd rather focus on my other business, which is why I'm hoping to sell. Hoping to get honest input (with the small amount of detail I've provided) on a valuation of a turn key business that I invested about 200k in. It would be ff&e, trademarks, social media with 30k+, no real estate. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
