How much should I get from a car crash settlement as a passenger?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 04:48 PM PDT

I was in a car crash about 3 weeks ago and both cars were totalled. It was a rear ended while we were at a complete stop at a stoplight. The other driver hit us going about 45-50, she blamed it on her 3" high heels that they got stuck on the brake. I had to go to the ER (no ambulance) and had to get a couple X-Rays on my back to check if anything was fractured. I was in the hospital for about 8 hours. I wasn't given any drugs or painkillers. I'm having to attend a chiropractor once a week and this is about to be my third time going.

Also 2 days ago I got rear ended again in a different car on the freeway, I was also the passenger, the other car was totalled but ours wasn't, at least not yet. After we got off the highway my dad who was driving passed out a few times after we got out of the car, so we had to call a ambulance which I was also taken in. I had to get X-rays again and a MRI this time. I was given some Advil and had my own room to stay in the ER. I was in there for about 10 hours for this one. I have to follow up with my doctor later this we

I was wondering how much I should expect from each settlement. Thanks for the help! I also don't have a job currently.

Renters insurance and bed bugs/landlord responsibilities

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 04:10 AM PDT

Heyo! I seem to be in a bit of a predicament regarding insurance and what the landlord is responsible for.

So long story short, about a year ago, a tenant in the same building wound up with bedbugs. They personally exterminated because the landlord refused. When they exterminated, they spread to the middle apartment. They refuse to admit that they had them and that they personally exterminated prior to them spreading to us.

We informed the landlord as soon as we noticed the possibilities of an infestation in December, and he told us it's our responsibility. Okay, I have renters insurance, all is bueno, you know?

Turns out it's not. We exterminated, they spread to the middle apartment again, they exterminated, and we got them back again. We can't afford to exterminate again, but Ohio Passport who provides services for my father is willing to do so.

Here's where the tricky stuff comes in. Both Ohio Passport, as well as my insurance company Central-Mutual tells me it's the landlords responsibility. While my claim is still open, the insurance company is requiring a written statement signed and notorized by the landlord stating the bed bugs aren't his responsibility and why they're not his responsibility, which he has apparently rudely refused to provide by giving me a piece of paper with 3 lines on it saying he spoke to his attorney and it's not his responsibility, and if I do indeed have insurance it'll cover it, which was neither signed or notorized.

So I guess the question is: Should my insurance cover this? Is it indeed the landlord's responsibility like they're telling me, or is it possibly one of the tenants responsibilities? I can't afford an attorney, but a consultation with one has told me that it *is* the landlords responsibility since he refuses to exterminate the entire building.

I have an open perils policy, which as far as I can tell, does not exclude infestation from coverage, but it does indeed exclude landlord negligence and such.

    Thanks for any response!

Best course of action for finding decent but cheap liability insurance with a bad driving record?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:48 AM PDT

In March, I totaled my car in a 4-car accident which was my fault (rear ended someone who rear ended the next person who rear ended the next etc.) & am insured by AllState with liability insurance up to $30k per accident. The policy is a joint policy for my wife and I, covering both of our cars. We are in the process of getting a divorce and once my case is settled we plan to close our policy.

I plan to get a <$15,000 used car and am looking to get minimum liability insurance (currently residing in Louisiana). I have the wreck I mentioned, and one other less severe rear ending accident involving one other car and < $6,000 in damage. I also have 3-4 speeding tickets.

If it helps to know, I'm a college graduate with < $35k annual income and plan to stay in Louisiana. I understand there are variables, just looking for help on where to start. Any help is appreciated!

(NM) Accidentally switched from PPO to HMO by employer, but it's a family business

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 05:38 PM PDT

For the last 8-9 years I've had a PPO through my family business small group plan, and it's great... yeah a high deductible, but my long time PCP is not in network so I relied on the PPO for specialty services and the like. I am the vice president of the company, and as my dad's aging I am making most of the major decision, including insurance renewals... or so I thought.

Last month I added my new wife to my insurance, and went through a big ordeal to get that settled... and we got our cards in the mail, and to my surprise it said it was an HMO.

I called the insurers to see why there was a change, and it turns out my dad decided to go behind my back and re-hire a family friend and put him on our insurance, but did not want to pay for a PPO for him, so switched our coverage to an HMO.

I'm quite upset by this as my wife and I are planing to conceive and need a women's specialist / OB for her, but our provider can take 6-8 months to establish a PCP, and we're just kind of screwed without one on an HMO right?

So I called our group plan broker, and she said there's probably nothing I can do to reverse the renewal that took place in November of last year, and we'll just have to wait until November again to change plans....

So my question for you all is can anyone think of other options?

Could I resign my position with the company and then 1099 myself back as a contract for X months and use that as my QLE to get back on a private PPO, and then re-hire myself at some point, and switch back to the company plan?

The main problem with that thinking is the current plan only has 2 employees on it counting myself and this re-hired employee, as my parents have both moved to medicare, and our other employees have opted out... so if we go to a single employee on the plan I think they will drop us.

I know for certain my dad did not intend to drop my PPO, I just don't think he understood what he was signing. I don't think it rises to a legal claim of incompetence or anything, he just wasn't paying attention. Not like I'd take action against him anyways.

    thanks!

(CA)I was injured in a motorcycle accident, other vehicle took 100 percent fault.

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 01:41 AM PDT

It has now been 11 months since the accident 08-2017. I have undergone 3 surgeries since then, developed an infection due to my open compound fracture, and likely have another surgery pending. The doctors recommended physical therapy which I have been going to, so the journey to recovery is continuing.

The other driver's policy is a 15/30, and his insurance agent said that they authorized the maximum medical payout which is only ~15k. It would be a 2-party check to myself and DHCS, so they'd likely take half. I have yet to accept it because I want to settle everything at once. They did deem the damage to be a total loss for which they issued a check for the loss of the bike, but that doesn't include anything for loss of wages, pain and suffering, future medical/physical therapy bills, etc.

The other driver isn't rich so not sure if suing is the right course of action, but I also would like to seek financial restitution for having to endure so much physical loss over a long period of time. The police report and witness statements are in support of my case (that it was the driver's fault). What kind of payment am I eligible for and how would I go about getting it?

    Fender Bender Collision Advice

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:01 PM PDT

Hey all, I was recently involved in a fender bender in which a vehicle backed into my front bumper. I made a U-turn (apparently illegal but there were no cars within a 20 foot radius) into a side street parking spot. There was car parking in front and I planned to park right behind it. Everything seemed to be okay and I U turned into the spot, but the car in front of me had a gap of a couple feet into his spot. He could have moved a couple feet forward and settled into his own spot. Instead, he decided to back up I'm guessing to fix his parking and he ended up hitting the front of my car. I'm wondering who is in the fault in this situation and if I should get insurance involved. I feel that it is his fault that he backed up into my car when he was perfectly capable of settling into the forward spot by driving forward a little bit, but I'm not knowledgable enough in this field so I was hoping to get advice from my fellow redditors. I have two days to decide whether or not I should get insurance involved or pay out of pocket. I'm a little hesitant to get insurance involved because I don't want my premium to go up, but I do feel that I am not necessarily in the wrong. Any advance would be greatly appreciated. I've attached photos of the damages of my car and the other guy's, as well as the space in which the collision happened.

Was also wondering what you think the damages would cost for the rear bumper. Thanks in advance.

    Fire Loss and Public Adjusters

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 07:24 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I'm new to this sub, but I'm trying to research for my not-so-tech-savvy parents, so please bear with me if this question should be directed elsewhere.

Unfortunately, last week they lost their home to fire. We're still waiting on final word from various parties involved, but it is probably going to be a total loss. Of course, they got a notice in the mail from a public adjuster offering their assistance. Given that we've never dealt with this situation before, I'm trying to determine the value that these guys might have in our situation. Based on my preliminary research, they don't seem worth it, but I wanted to get some other opinions and see if there was something I might be missing. As an additional note, we have USAA for our homeowner's insurance policy. Thanks!

Looking for liability insurance for a collapsed barn.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 06:00 PM PDT

My wife and I are looking to get liability insurance for a collapsed barn and shed that we have on our property. At the moment we are covered through American Family, but they have recently notified us saying they will no longer cover us unless we get it fixed.

We did some digging and the cost of getting this demolished and removed comes out to roughly $25-35k which no one will lend us as we are just on the 80% mortage loan to home value ratio.

Given that we have been decline on several loan applications we started talking to other insurance companies to see if they are willing to take on the risk. Most of the companies (Progressive, LibertyMutual, Esurance, Wisconsin Mutual, and Nationwide) declined us as a potential customer but the Insurance Agent for Esurance mentioned that allrisk.com may be willing to take us on.

My question to the community is, do you know if there are any other potential insurance companies that may be willing to cover us in case allrisk.com falls through? Or are we doomed?

Additional information: we live in Wisconsin, owner of a pitbull, and haven't made any insurance claims within the last 5 years.

Can I still use an HSA if my spouse is on a different plan?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:59 AM PDT

My family has always been covered under my insurance from work- we have a qualified high deductible plan and I contribute to an HSA that we use for all of our medical expenses.

My spouse is starting a new job and will have access to a much lower deductible plan with copays for most services. If we split the family and put my spouse on a seperate non HDHP plan, can I still contribute to the HSA and use it for the entire family's medical bills? Will this have any effect on my taxes?

Motorcycle accident. I am at fault.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:33 PM PDT

    I am in CA.

Do I need to report damage to my bike to the insurance company?

Basically my bike is damaged, but I don't want insurance to fix it. It's minor damage to my engine cover, and I can fix it for significantly cheaper than my insurance is going to do. I don't want any money from insurance for it either.

Obviously I am reporting the accident because I damaged someone else's car, but I am at the question that asks me if my vehicle is damaged.

Am I allowed to mark no if I don't want them to touch it? Or do I just mark yes and not bring it to be appraised?

17 years old, got into a car accident, wondering how much my insurance rate will increase?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 04:47 PM PDT

Was turning into my neighborhood and I agree it was a little fast, but I was pushing breaking the way in and then the wheels hydroplaned (it was raining). City had installed new paint 2-3 weeks ago, the paint is really slippery, and the road is very rough. I lost all control and I hit a sign and it damaged the car door bad. The cop didn't give me any citations, and I'm looking at maybe 3-5 thousand dollars worth in repairs. Wondering after the claim how much insurance rates will increase for me, and how long it will last before it is lowered again. Sorry I don't know what to do, everything sucks :(((

Does auto insurance actually drop at age 25?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:49 AM PDT

24 y/o male, turning 25 in one month. Totally clean driving record. Currently paying $75/month for my vehicle. Will my insurance decrease? If so, is this something that is automatically applied to my account, or will I need to call and ask for it?

Is there some kind of uber-cheap car insurance out there if one person has two vehicles, wants them both insured, but RARELY uses one of them?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:54 PM PDT

Quick context: I have a Chevy S10 I use for mpg's, and an F150 I keep around for power when I need it. I rarely use the F150, but I want it insured. Statefarm and the other big guys tell me the cheapest they can get me is about $250/6-month per vehicle. The price just to insure one of them is about $250/vehicle, the only savings being multi-car discount. But I can only drive one vehicle at a time!!! The Ford only gets about 3k miles on it a year, perhaps even 2k.

I am considering just cancelling the Ford's insurance, and turning it back on when I need to use it...

Any help here is greatly appreciated

$500K Life Insurance Policy, Fraud Help!

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 09:35 AM PDT

    Hello,

Found out a family friend took out a life insurance policy on a family member, $500K.

    Family did not sign anything.

I found out it's been active for years. No one told her about it. She is apparently the owner of the policy and the person that took out the policy is listed as beneficiary.

    1. Who do we contact to explain this was insurance fraud?
    2. Will the police take this serious, can we file charges?
    3. Can we charge the person who did this with anything or will policy just get canceled?
    4. If it is canceled due to fraud will the person who's been paying, actually be refunded?

    Thanks, any help appreciated!
