Never work for free. There's a near 100% chance the recipient will be ungrateful... and you know how I know they won't be grateful? Because if they cared about your work, they wouldn't have asked you to do it for free in the first place.

I left my six figure job and 10mil rev company to start a business in Cambodia and totally wingin' it. AMA?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:41 AM PDT

TL:DR, young kid, too much success, went insane, moved to a third world country and determined to make a change.

editlots of people asking how to help. I'm not taking investment money but I'm always looking for help. I'm aware enough to know the more people I have watching me the more likely someone will catch my mistake. To wit, if you wanted to follow my social channels (paulchrisluke on most stuff) I'll be doing updates there and you can watch me fail. That will probably be the best way to help.

Hey guys, my name is Chris. I formally worked as a Chief Technology Officer at a small ad agency in Chattanooga, TN. While small, we had a great team, and I've always had an eye for how to build products. In my 2.5 years there, we built a small saas product, "Terri". Terri's job was to be a marketing agency replacer (in the most blunt way).

Most of the money made in the advertising world is made trying to get the most detailed profile on you so that you will be most likely to buy the thing I'm about to show you, and there is a MASSIVE amount of human effort that goes into that. This was absurd in my eyes.

Every month large companies spend a budget on marketing (our average client budget spread between $50,000/mo - $600,000/mo) in order to get you to buy more shit. A marketing agencies job is to tell you should spend 10% of that monthly budget on instagram, 15% on email, 40% on content production, etc. They then go through a complex data driven* decision on how much to spend where in what markets ($258 on facebook ads in Chattanooga, TN with the Cool Kidz headline, $786 in NYC with the F U headline... you get it). Needless to say, humans are shockingly bad at making that granular of a plan. Still, its the only way we've known how to do it, so we do.

Terri simplified that process by making all the decisions about posting time, venue, budget amount, etc. for you, all you had to do was hit approve. Being driven by math, she was able to avoid typical pitfalls that humans have when looking at mass amounts of complex data to make a decision.

Anywho, it worked pretty well, and we were able to start getting recognized... being published by cloudflare in a case study, and being a keynote speaker at Google AMP's mobile conference in February.

Although I had always come from a "successful" career past, I was accelerating at a rate I had never experienced before... I can't tell you how to explain that everything just started "clicking"... I actually attribute most of that to starting to accept the bad parts about me as good, thanks to my beautiful wife [removed, people don't like romance].

Anyway, that acceleration and rapid success made me want to go faster and faster, and before I knew it I was working on projects that were having sweeping negative societal impacts (ie relevancy algorithms) and it *really* started to get to me. I crashed, and made some crushing mistakes. I didn't take the time to explain my process or what I was thinking, my company didn't understand, and I was kindly asked to be "head innovator" and let the operations be left to the rest of the company.

So I did what any normal person would do: sell everything and move to Cambodia with $50,000 budgeted and a goal to use the skills I have for good for once. Terri is a powerful tool, and I'm building Terri 2.0 out here. Although I have ran two companies before, there are many aspects I am completely new to: International Law, dealing with corruption from people with guns, trying to get talent staffing in a third world country, etc.

The nice thing is, I've done the "hard part" before. The software is live in production and working, I just need to rebuild it to not stomp on any IP rights, which is honestly kinda nice to start a project anew.

It should be an adventure, I plan to share a lot about this journey. Wish me luck!

Mindvalley U Will Bring Students And Digital Nomads From Around The Globe To Estonia To Learn From Jim Kwik, Wim Hof And Shefali Tsabary

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:43 AM PDT

One of the core beliefs of Mindvalley is that the four-year university system is an antiquated educational system that continues to fail people all across the globe. With that in mind, the learning experience company has launched the yearly Mindvalley U program as an innovative alternative.

Providing the vital life lessons that education has forgot and creating a place to grow into your greatness, Mindvalley U combines progressive education with travel and exploration, as each four-week course takes place in a different location—last year's taking place in Barcelona. The 2018 edition will be in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, a cultural hub for the region, from June 28th–July 22nd.

Instructors will include celebrity memory trainer Jim Kwik, Mindvalley founder and New York Times Best Selling author Vishen Lakhiani, legendary physicist-mystic Nassim Haramein, clinical psychologist and renowned author Shefali Tsabary, WildFit founder Eric Edmeades, Build Great Minds founder Rhea Lalla, nutritionist and hypnotherapist Marisa Peer, Lifebook founders Jon & Missy Butcher, senior Buddhist monk and teacher Gelong Thubten, famed daredevil Wim Hof, who holds 20+ Guinness World Records and will be inviting guests to take an ice bath with him, and much more.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to work with Mindvalley trainers who will be conducting workshops related to building and running businesses and sharing best practices from within the Mindvalley team, making it the perfect opportunity for digital nomads and entrepreneurs. There will also be networking events, parties, excursions, and the chance to learn more about Estonian culture.

"Mindvalley U and its tribe have had a profound impact in my life," said former Mindvalley U student Annie Leburn, who was able to join Mindvalley for their debut edition last year in Barcelona. Another former Mindvalley U student Mellisa Foong had this to say about her experience: "Mindvalley U has challenged me both personally and professionally." By taking into account new emerging trends, Mindvalley U is looking to innovate through these seven aspects of education: the rotating campus, the one-month calendar, the curated community, the accreditation, the cost savings, the upgraded curriculum, and the incredible teachers. Throughout the four-week experience, Mindvalley will bring together a global community of changemakers, leaders, cultural creatives and passionate entrepreneurs from over 50 countries in Tallinn; a city which has the highest number of startups per capita in Europe and is considered the Silicon Valley of the continent. Mindvalley U is also open to kids and teens, offering unique programs curated to propel growing minds towards a progressive and creative educational trajectory.

Applications for Mindvalley U in Estonia are now open. For more information on the event or to apply, please visit the Mindvalley U website. Space is limited and guests are encouraged to apply early.

About Mindvalley: Founded in 2003 by Vishen Lakhiani, Mindvalley is a learning experience company that publishes ideas and teachings by the best authors in personal growth, health and fitness, spirituality, productivity, mindfulness and more – serving three million students, subscribers and followers worldwide. Customer Service goes a long way

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:45 AM PDT

Random, but I just had a shitty experience at the doctors office which brought to light the importance of customer service. If you're gonna be late to a client... call them. If you're running behind schedule... let them know. Don't keep people in the dark, communication goes a long way

Have an idea to capitalize on Cannabis legalization

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:29 PM PDT

With legalization happening in my country, I would like to condense all the parts for a cannabis grow (but not limited to) into a box and sell to people. Make my markup by buying in bulk, and by selling it as an AIO kit locally and online.

The value proposition would be new people wanting to make sure they have everything they need for a successful grow. I also would stress the possibility of growing other greens etc. to the customers.

"Just add water" for the slogan. I also have a decent name.

I would have a nice printed grow "Bible" to aid in simplicity.

    Criticisms? Advice?

iPhone X vs professional camera for landing page?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:13 AM PDT

    Hey guys!

I'm trying to make a landing page for a product I designed. I want it to be very presentable and professional, as the landing page will be one of the first impression from a customer. Anyways, I want to take a picture of a model (someone who is close to me and I won't need to pay) holding my product and smiling and use that as a the background of the landing page. Would an iPhone X camera be ok to use or do you think I will need a professional camera? If anyone here has photography experience, I would highly appreciate your advice.

    Thanks everyone.

Hiring a Freelancer - Post a Job Or Seem them Out?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:04 AM PDT

I'm having a bad experience with an app developer company which I talked about here. The majority of the iOS/Android app is finished but there are quite a few items I still need to add or fix from the previous developer's work. I really want to hire someone trustworthy and talented this time around. I'm unsure the way I should go about it.

Should I post a job on sites like Upwork and PeopleperHour and have them message me?

I also don't know which platform to choose from with these choices.

    OR

Should I use those websites and search people who would be a good match and me message them?

Which method have you used and what are the pros and cons of using each method?

Edit: Title should say "Seek" them out

Incredible deal. How do I take advantage of it?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:03 AM PDT

I am a beverage broker/distributor in the Midwest. Not much capital here for Entreprenuers in non-tech but I have scratched and clawed this business into a decent spot. I have run across the opportunity to buy a huge amount of equipment from a multi-national competitor that overestimated their ability to enter a new market. I can reuse this equipment for my niche and get a 85-90% discount on it.

This is my estimate for cost.

600-750k for the equipment Estimated 200-250 per machine

    300-400k for Parts

    40k - 21 full semi shipments/possible train?

    30k Broker fee

25k Storage on new building/ Remanufacturing site.

    50k Labor

    1.05m-1.3m Total Cost.

Implications. - Securing this many machines for this price point would alter the business trajectory significantly. It would allow us to secure additional distributors from our 5 to National and essentially have an unending supply of equipment for the next 3 years. At this price point we would be able to pay off equipment within a matter of their first order. With traditional revenue per machine of 25 cases per year we would be able to achieve an additional 9 million per year in revenue.

289% growth last year from 273k in revenue to 815k in revenue and on pace for 1.6M in revenue this year.

How the hell do I finance this deal? Stuck in the Midwest with no capital and no network. Open to any ideas.

    Thanks,

Looking for advice on deciding a college major as a hopeful entrepreneur

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:04 AM PDT

I'm currently an Exercise Science major transferring to a new university. I've always sort of dreamed about the life of an entrepreneur and knew I wanted more than "normal" with my life, but within the past year or so, I've realized that being one is solely what I want to do with it. The university I'm transferring to has a top-15 entrepreneurship program, which I've been strongly considering changing to. However, after doing some research on this sub, it seems like the general consensus is that it's a waste of time and just as much can be learned through self-teaching and the process of actually starting a business. The university also offers a minor in the program, and it looks like a lot of entrepreneurship courses are offered as electives.

I'm using the GI Bill which pays my rent and tuition for another three years, and I'm grateful to be in a position to where I don't have to work and can dedicate a lot of non-class time to learning, if that makes a difference. My thought process is that I'd like to have something established by the time I graduate, and I had thought before I started researching here that majoring in this would help me the most with that.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    How to approach large company

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:39 AM PDT

Hey guys!First of all, I want to thank all of you guys for all the input and advice you have already given me in the past! It's awesome to be able to hear the stories and opinions of so many different entrepreneurs from different places.

Me and a friend of mine want to solve a problem for a large company. We have already created a software prototype and believe that we are ready for a meeting with the big guys. I plan to write an email to one of the guys in charge.

Anybody here have some advice on how to structure the email to increase our chances of a reply?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks :)

EDIT: I should add that we have conducted a survey among the companys customers which also shows that our product will be a benefit to their customers. Any way to leverage on that in my first email?

How do you manage time efficiently when you work for yourself?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:55 AM PDT

Our business started picking up enough to let my husband and I do it full time together back in January. I have worked from home for others before and it's completely different than working for yourself!

Basically what we do is web development, glorified for a particular niche and developed as an SAAS style business.

Things got CRAZY BUSY before we could quit our jobs and because of that we were booked a few months before even quitting. And things didn't slow down too much since then. Not complaining - I'd rather be this busy than worry about business coming in.

The problem is I can't seem to keep myself motivated. Throughout the day I'll stop working, play on my phone, Google and shop online. I work from 8:30a-4p and then 8p-12a but I probably only get about 6 hours worth of development actually done.

It's causing us to get backed up a bit further (booked to November now) and every day I tell myself I won't do it but - here I am on Reddit.

So my question is what tips/tricks did you do for yourself to keep yourself motivated and concentrated on work during working hours?

Any ideas as to how to properly utilize my family assets?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:39 AM PDT

    Hello entrepreneurs!

I am a 23 yo fresh computer science graduate. I have worked in a digital agency and am currently working at the company which operates the most visited national website in my country.

My family owns around 50 acres of agricultural land and a 1000 sq. ft. commercial location which could be used for anything (restaurant, store, ... )

I want to start my own business and I want to combine my love for tech and entrepreneurship with the assets we already own, but i don't have many ideas of businesses to start which are not purely online. If you were in my place, what would you do ?

What was the best book you read about entrepreneurship (especially digital)?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:20 AM PDT

I don't know how many times a question like this gets asked in this sub by someone looking for an easy way to make a quick buck. Note that this is not my intentions, it takes dedication, hard work, perseverence and - let's face it - luck to get a successful business of the ground. So now that that's out the way...

I'm looking for a book that specifically helps with spotting gaps in the market. And more so in the digital space. It's easy coming up with an idea but 1) Most of the time you're the only one that thinks those ideas are good and 2) The ideas that you come up with is very much related to your state of mind, what your experiences has been, your current skill set, the people you hang out with etc. Now I'm sure there's no definitive "formulae", but there must be books out there that can help you think like an entrepreneur, where to look for gaps in the market etc.

Often you come across some guy that made a killing doing the most random, niche thing that you would never have imagined would work. And at the end of the day it comes down to spotting that gap where there's demand that is not being fulfilled. I want a book that can help you get in that mindset and start looking for that gap in the right places.
