I have $10K that I want to use to start an online business, but I'm struggling...

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:34 PM PDT

Hey everyone! I currently own a business that is doing pretty well, and because of that I have some savings. I'm getting tired of a large percentage of my money going into my IRA to be used when I'm 60, so I'd like to use some of it now to start some side businesses.

Since most of my time is being spent at my current business, I would rather start something that will be profitable without requiring a lot of my time. I'm struggling to come up with an idea that A. I think could work with only $10K, and B. I'm passionate about.

Have any of you ever been in a similar position? What advice would you have for me? Honestly, any advice will help. I'm really itching to do something, but I can't nail the right idea. The whole "retirement plan" I'm on right now is just not fulfilling.

    Thanks!

Starting (trying to) a Science Nonprofit

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:04 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm trying to start a nonprofit business in biological and pharmaceutical research. Its not a common pathway as most pharma companies are for profit. But I want my company to focus more on research which we can then publish freely vs actually producing a sell-able drug product.

I'm wondering if I could do what the academics do, and apply for grants for research even though I am not affiliated with any academic institution. In terms of requirements, there is nothing stopping me from applying for the grants, but I am wondering if its worth my time, as new/small players in the field often don't even get looked at (i.e. all the money goes to Harvard, MIT, BU, etc...).

Likewise, I'm having a hard time finding support for my business as most incubators and accelerators prefer/only deal with for profit businesses.

I've been asked - why the nonprofit route? I reply - Two reasons. I don't think science should have any agenda - intrinsically its supposed to be nonprofit, negative results should be worth just as much as positive results - but in a for profit environment there's always pressure to "sell" something. In addition, I thought being a nonprofit that accepted donations would make it easier to get the ball rolling.

Any experiential advice is greatly appreciated, or if you know someone who has tread this path or something close to it, I'd be more than grateful for an introduction.

How to Get Clients from the USA if you’re from INDIA (or anywhere else in the world...)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:50 PM PDT

**This was a response I wrote to a question I got in my inbox regarding building a marketing agency.

2 of my team members are from Nigeria & the Philippines and here's how they "signed me" as a client...

🔴 Step 1: Get in Front of the RIGHT Prospects

If people in "your country" won't pay your fee, look elsewhere...

LinkedIn, E-mail, Facebook, and places like Upwork have no borders...

🔴 Step 2: Offer REAL VALUE

Stop selling "Chatbots" and start selling something EVERY BUSINESS OWNER WANTS: Time & Money

🔴 Step 3: Be willing to negotiate

And that doesn't just mean lower your prices.

Maybe you can bundle your services or offer more help because labor and services in your area are less expensive.

Use the arbitrage to your advantage.

There's no reason you can't start getting clients TODAY...

    You have to just start...

    Dropshipping newbie looking to learn

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:31 PM PDT

    Hi.

I am UK based and just starting on researching dropshipping. I have an idea for a niche area and wondering what options are out there.

questions for anyone with experience with this....

    1. I want to do print on demand stuff (mugs/t-shirts etc)... Are there any recommended UK based printers with an API that I could hook into and send designs to?

    2. Should I go with aliexpress? I understand delivery time will be extended but interested to know if print on demand is possible with ali express...and how your overall experience has been?

    3. Is it easy enough to sell in US and elsewhere with shopify given that I'm in the UK? What potential issues are there?

    Thanks

What would you start with 25-50K?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 01:09 PM PDT

Looking for general thoughts on what you guys would start with 25-50K. Ideally for me, I'd like something that can be profitable more quickly than others and I'm not too concerned about growing a massive company, mainly something that makes solid, steady money to supplement my income.

Getting a product made in china, will need to ship 1-4 pallets to Canada/America. what is the best service? Any tips on shipping from those that have done it?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:48 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

We're taking the plunge and getting a product made. It'll be about a 3 week turn around on production and we want to get it into the country relatively quickly.

I've had things shipped via air and UPS/DHL in the past, but am wondering about larger shipments.

What sort of time does sea shipping typically have?

What sort of services are best to use? Any Recommendations?

What sort of costs do you usually see per pallet? 500kgs/pallet.

What headaches have you run into?

What extra costs have you run into?

Note: I did a search through the sub and didn't find anything in the last few years and not much based on costs, which will obviously vary quite a bit. Just looking for experience from others.

Instant Quote Calculator vs. Having to Wait for an Email Back?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:46 PM PDT

    Hey All,

I am in a bit of a tough decision. I recently got my site up and running with my desired instant quote calculator that I wanted. Lots of other competitors have one so I wanted to be ahead of the competition. I also figured people would rather know the price instantly than wait to be reached out.

However, I am also on the fence because our pricing can vary on tons of different factors and it's proving to be more difficult to replicate that. I fear the calculator under-quoting and then losing a client because of it.

In your opinion, would you go with the instant quote or following up manually by email for a quote?

    Proper ad network structure

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 12:41 PM PDT

This may be a stupid question, may not (and if there is a better sub for this, please let me know) but what's a professional way to handle an ad network for a website?

Currently, I toss in adsense clips in spots, maybe some Taboola in other spots and just let it ride. I remember a network (pulsepoint?) that basically put the highest bid in slots. Is that how it's generally run?

I hope this made sense. Thanks!

Am I to blindly trust Thumbtack they aren't a scam?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 08:12 AM PDT

I've spent a good couple $100 on Thumbtack, got some returning customers, but their new policy begs me to question their integrity.

New policy: you send quotes yourself or let their system do it, then when a customer responds by saying just about anything, you pay $12.5 per quote.

Often these messages are: "How does it work?", or "When are you free?" and then they disappear off the face of the earth never respond back to you, don't hire anyone else on Thumbtack either. The company racks up $12.5 from each PRO that the lead messaged and profits.

Now, am I just supposed to trust Thumbtack that they don't just put in bogus requests themselves? What safe guards are in place that none of their employees aren't involved in this kind of fraud?

I tried reaching their customer service about this, but they have stopped phone support and their e-mail support doesn't answer me.

    What do you think?

The Dubai Future Accelerators is a Scam

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:39 AM PDT

It was December 2016, I was invited to the Dubai Future Accelerators and so I applied. We showed all of our designs that we had at the time (although we didn't have a machine completed yet), and at the last minute they asked us for a video of the machine.

I wanted the $1m USD they claimed to give to every startup (turns out they gave it to 0 startups) so that we could build our own machine that we had designed (which would only take a short time to build and impress the world). Since we didn't have a video, I sent them a dropbox link Apis Cor's video saying this is an example of 3D printing construction technology (I removed their logo from the intro/outro), without any context of whether or not it was ours. They assumed it was ours (rightfully so) because this was before Apis Cor made their false claim of building a house in 24 hours which is what brought them international fame. By the way, it actually took Apis Cor one month to build that house and they edited the clips to make it look like they did it in 24 hours, but the machine kept failing, although that's another story I will write about soon.

We get accepted into the program, and funnily enough, the other startup in the group was Renca, who were the ones that produced Apis Cor's 3D printing concrete (Renca's founders are great people by the way). We had a previous negative run in with Apis Cor in October/November 2016 so I thought it was hilarious that of all the people that were chosen, it was them.

We get to Dubai, free flights and stay for the entire time the program lasted. We had already been getting press in Dubai, and I planned to fully establish ourselves in Dubai once we had the machines built.

    The first lie I learned:

They promised $1m USD to every startup, and after a few days I realized that wasn't going to happen. I asked one of the staff members of the program and he told me that the startups in the previous batch (we were the second batch) were also upset over this. The Dubai government is completely ignorant to the startup world and I will make sure that this is the first of their many lies that are called out (beyond just this program).

The entire program is rigged so that you have to screw over your company ownership. They say that you can get "contracts" if the program goes well with the government. The thing is, you can't work with the government without registering a local company that has a local with 51% ownership of your locally-registered company. If not, you can't even participate in anything with the government besides talking to them. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is when even if you have contracts in place to protect you, the local can still screw you over. This was a big no-no to me and further made me not appreciate it.

The program staff themselves, for the most part, were very nice people. I felt bad for Paul because he received a lot of ignorant and rude words from the local government because of accepting us. He didn't tell me this but when I saw how stressed he looked, I could tell.

After a week or so, they started realizing that we didn't actually have a machine ready. My goal, as I said before, was to get the $1m and use it to quickly build a prototype in 2–3 weeks. Even when I explained this to them, they refused to care because they were too ignorant to realize the bigger picture.

The entire program overall was just an easy way for local companies to take advantage of these startups and use the startups' hype to build the reputation of Dubai. A lot of local government officials were very kind, but others were also very arrogant and rude (they didn't know about the situation with the video we sent yet at the time).

We started getting so much press (because we were the only startup of note in the batch) and it really frustrated the Dubai government because they knew how we got in. If we came in without anything of our own, with no intent of doing anything legitimate, then that is one thing, but we came to build the machine in Dubai and showcase the "power" of Dubai's innovation and ability to bring world-changing startups.

Instead they warned me that a lot of big people were mad at me and had people in suits/sunglasses stare me down as I walked the streets to try and scare me. We got so famous to the point where even local press was saying we built the 3D printed office (we didn't, and I never said we did to any press outlets). WinSun reached out to us asking to partner, I know Behrokh Khoshnevis personally, and I wasn't going to go down that path.

When I realized that the entire program was BS, I decided I was going to milk the press as much as possible so that we could actually get the funding we needed to build the machines and have a successful company.

Noah Raford from the Dubai Future Foundation told us we had to cease talking to press and cancel all speeches. I had speeches arranged in other countries, and the staff told them not to have me speak as we were a completely "illegitimate" company in their eyes.

We ended up getting 950k in funding at a 25m valuation, seed round, and all of the investors knew we didn't have the machine ready, just the designs, but they were actually smart and could see the bigger picture.

With that being said, if you're thinking about applying to the program, do it if you want a free trip and stay in Dubai. Then use it to milk the press. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend it. It's a scam, and I'm glad I was able to give them a test of their own medicine.

I was thinking about learning new skills so I can make extra cash down the line. I was thinking a few ideas through but wanted some extra opinions.

Learning code, like Python or something. Maybe create apps down the line for myself or clients.

Video editing. Become a video editor for clients.

Website design. Learning HTML or CSS.

Where to find/hire people to promote a charitable product (off the Internet)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2018 11:10 AM PDT

I'm looking for some recommendations on where to find people to promote a charitable product. The product is a care package for people in need (homeless, panhandlers, etc...). Looking to get it into the hands of people that are busy, but want to find time to donate. Leaving it in their car or somewhere they can easily access. I'm reducing the costs of these packages by buying in bulk and passing those savings onto the purchaser.

It would be great to have a couple people that can donate the products, review them and get some pictures.

Any suggestions, comments or concerns are greatly appreciated.

My dad is an machinery engineer in his early 50 with 25 years of experience as a production manager in local factory. He is being layoff until end of the year and he wants to start something his own. He is not sure what exactly so I'm asking you for some business idea.

Rural part of Europe. Seeking for some idea with medium or high added value and potential for export. Software development is not something he's eager to but hardware can be considered.

Anyone successfully delegate their email inbox to executive assistant?

As title says, wondering if anyone developed a process for successfully delegating your inbox to an executive assistant. I understand the ability to CC assistants on emails to help with this, but this still sucks you back into the inbox and not everyone hits reply all.

The email grind is a known time suck for executives. Any thoughts?

My 6 year old daughter told me she wants to start a YouTube channel.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:47 PM PDT

I've got a little marketing background, mainly running FB ads for coaches, trainers and speakers, but I wouldn't say I've given this a lot of focus. It's been more of a passive income stream for me for the past 2 years.

I've never ran ads on YouTube and other than consuming content I'm not all that familiar with the platform...or how to launch a successful YouTube channel. My 6 year old just told me she wants to start her own channel, I guess because shes seen a few other kids on YouTube. I'm not sure if this is just a passing phase or if this is something she could be really interested in. I think it would be a fun activity we could do together and have a lot of fun with but I also want it to take off if we do this. Possibly even monetize the channel at some point. I told her we need to explore some good ideas first so we know what kind if content she wants to create. Where should I start?
