    Has Anyone Opened a Franchise?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 03:06 PM PDT

If so, how'd it go? Was it profitable? Was turnover a huge issue? Any advice you would give to someone who is going to open one?

Does anyone know any scholarly articles that indicate that small businesses have, on average, better customer care/satisfaction.

    Posted: 10 Jul 2018 04:15 AM PDT

I have seen a lot of articles saying that this is true but none from the likes of Accenture or Deloitte. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

How to manage inventory better with a virtual warehouse?

    Posted: 10 Jul 2018 02:56 AM PDT

I have a grocery business and won't be able to afford a physical warehouse and we procure most of our items through online B2B vendors directly to the site. We need to be able to make purchases at the head office and send it to our site (we'll be having about 60 physical brick & mortar stores)

The challenge: brands change the EAN codes on products from time to time and the price of the product as well. This causes confusion at the time of billing. What's the best way to manage this?

    Debating opening up a storefront

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 06:52 PM PDT

Hi /r/smallbusiness- I'm new here and loving the community. I've been working on my business (Making historical dresses/costumes) for the last 3 years and it's self-sustaining to the point where I can pay the bills with it and have money left over at the end of the year for savings. It's an Etsy business and I get to do what I love while working for myself! The issue is that I want to grow it and am trying to figure out the next step forward. My take on it is I need to find a way to get more orders so that I can justify hiring someone to help part or full time. I've debated taking out a loan to open up a shop to get traffic that way - I live near a pretty wealthy area with a lot of tourist traffic so a boutique like that might just fit in - but the commitment is a lot. How can you know if it'll fail or succeed? How do you plan for it one way or the other? Any stories from people that have converted an online business to storefront+online? Thanks!

Small business owners who also have another full-time job, how do you keep at it?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 07:32 AM PDT

How do you stay motivated and find the time to keep pushing and grinding? My business has done extremely well for the year I've had it open but I also have a full-time job that I juggle with the business that I run solo. I'm always working, but know there's more to be done always.

Free Website Advice - Giving Away As Much As Possible!

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 07:24 AM PDT

Hi /r/smallbusiness! I'm a long time reader of this sub and I'd love to give something back, so I'd like to dedicate a day to dishing out as much knowledge as possible.

This isn't the place to promote myself, but just to briefly mention my credentials:

I'm a freelance website developer based in Brighton, UK and I work under my company, Lightspeed Digital. I make custom build websites from the ground up, with a focus on professional design, build quality and performance.

Please ask me anything, I'm happy to help. For example:

    • Website review

Already have a website? Show me and I'll tell you what I think! Feel free to specify a certain aspect if there's something specific you'd like to improve on.

    • Usability review

If you want an idea of how your users interact with your page, what stands out and how to change the focal points.

    • Code review

If you want to know how well made your site is, or want some ammo to come back to your developer if there's something that doesn't work quite right.

    • Web designer / company opinion

Want to know what I think of your current website creators? I won't be overly critical but I can tell you if they're someone I'd want to work with or not.

    • Speed test

Things running slowly? I'll tell you why and how you can improve them.

    • Need a new website?

With a small to no budget: There's a lot of DIY website builders out there, I can tell you which might be best for you and the pros and cons of each.

With a slightly larger budget: Wordpress will serve you well here. I can tell you if a theme looks about right for you.

Anything else: There's a massive variance in the services web designers will offer. Tell me your needs and I'll let you know the key things to secure in the quoting phase.

    • Need to find a local, decent web designer?

Tell me what you need done and I can suggest the types of places to look as well as how to check that they are as good as they say they are.

    • Already mid - development with someone and want to know if everything's going as expected?

Tell me your experience! Make sure to include approximately what you've had to spend.

    • Feel like you're paying a lot for not very much?

I can give an opinion on whether you're in good hands or getting ripped off.

    • Interested in making websites professionally?

Ask me how to get started, where to find learning resources, what the job involves, or anything else!

Edit: I'm turning in for the night now, thanks for all your interest. If I didn't reply to your comment then I will be back tomorrow, I plan to get round to everybody. Please feel free to join in if you're seeing this late!

    Advice about product naming

    Posted: 10 Jul 2018 12:16 AM PDT

We are selling hearing aids here in the states. Right now we have 4 to 5 models. We need to give each model a name. I am thinking about borrowing instrument names (trombone, violin etc) as the model name for the hearing aids, because it's easy enough to remember, and each of them represents some kinds feeling of sounds. Is it a good idea? I'd like to have some advice on this. Thank you.

Starting out and have some questions

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 07:36 PM PDT

I feel like i just need a direction to take. I've been looking up a lot of material but can't seem to connect the dots on what I actually need.

My wife stays home and I'm looking for something to keep her busy. She loves clothes so I figured selling clothes might be something she'd like.

I'm not trying to get rich of this idea, just something to generate clothes. I've been looking around and thought about ordering a couple of packages of clothes wholesale and get her started with selling it on Craigslist and other similar apps.

Seems like all I need is an EID number and a reseller permit. But I'm wondering if that's all I need and if so, will this route rack up a lot of taxes to pay back at the end of the year.

Any advise or guidance will help.

    Thanks in advance.

Debate most successful marketing tactics: Influencers, paid ads, or social media?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:57 PM PDT

Recently started an online tee business and need some ideas for different way to promote my brand. Has anyone had success contacting influencers or another type of advertising? I'd appreciate any constructive criticism to help keep sales from plateauing. Free advertising techniques would be a HUGE help as well!

The tees revolve around beverages so any creative drink marketing ideas would be cool, too.

4 Ways To Plan Your Day For Optimal Productivity — Get More Done In Less Time

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:26 PM PDT

    Good day!

Running two businesses and an active Youtube page can be a handful. As is, I work every day for about 14–16 hours 7 days a week. With these steps that I am about to cover, I make every single minute of each day count. Now, you do not need to work as much as I do and some would even argue that working this much is unhealthy, but I am sure you can still benefit from getting more done in less time.

Today we are going to be going over 4 tips that I do on a daily basis to make my day as productive as possible. If you would rather watch a video on this subject instead of reading about it click here to be taken to a video that will better explain these concepts.

1, Visualize The Day That You Want Every Morning

If you are not already a meditation guru than I would recommend you start practicing as soon as possible. What I do every morning is I sit down and cross my legs then begin to visualize the day that I would like to have and visualize me accomplishing everything that I need to accomplish today. This helps me because while I am doing these tasks throughout the day, it almost feels like I have already finished this task so everything is a breeze.

The other type of meditation I do every morning is called grateful meditation and it is exactly what it sounds like. I clear my mind and whatever comes into my mind, whether positive or negative, I say thank you and feel grateful for having that thought. If I do have a negative thought that I do not want to have again, I simply say "thank you for that thought as I know it came from a place of love with the intent to protect me but that thought does not serve me today. Thank you." This helps me accept the presence of this negative thought than just let it float away. Starting the day with positivity will help your day be more positive. Ever heard the phrase "woke up on the wrong side of the bed?" it goes both ways so if you start your days without making an effort to be positive you run the risk for your day to be negative.

2, Review Your Week & Month Goals

Now, if you do not have your goals written out already then this would be a good time to do so. People who have their goals written down are statistically more successful and achieve more in their lives when compared to those who do not. A good place to start would be to work form 10 year goals in so form your 10 year goals, then 5 year goals based on what you need to accomplish in order to accomplish the 10 year goals plus anything else you would like to accomplish in 5 years, then 1 year and do the same, then set your month goals, and then finally you should be setting your week goals at the start of every week.

Every morning I look at this GIANT whiteboard that I have set up. This whiteboard has every single goal that I will achieve on it and I love being able to check things off of these lists. Reviewing your goals every morning is incredibly important so you can then build your day goals and plan your day around your daily goals which will be based on your weekly goals. Make sense? Everything builds on the other. You can achieve so much as long as you are organized and keep yourself on track by tracking your goals.

3, Write To-Do List In Order Of Importance

The great Brian Tracy used to speak about his concept he dubbed "Eat That Frog." The concept states that you should do the most difficult tasks first thing in the morning when you have the most energy so the rest of your day will all be downhill. You will be surprised at the amount that you will be able to accomplish in one day by making this one simple adjustment to planning your day.

For me, I record two videos every morning then edit and upload them to my Youtube Channel. This is not incredibly difficult for me but it is 100% the most time-consuming thing for me to do so it is always nice to get this out of the way first thing in the morning so the rest of the tasks during the day will all be quick, or at least feel that way.

    4, No Skipping Around!

Yup, you read it here first. No skipping allowed! Well, maybe not first but at least in his context. When you plan your day, no matter how much you want to skip to a more easy task or something that you will enjoy doing more, you need to work directly down the list that you have created doing the more difficult tasks first then the easier tasks. The reason for this is that if you skip to the easier tasks, why in the world would you want to then go from a bunch of easy stuff to something difficult that you will not enjoy doing?

Even if you are able to motivate yourself to get the more difficult task done, you will not do it with the energy or enthusiasm that is required for you to do your best work possible. Or maybe you are Superman and you can do that but I definitely cannot!

Hope you have enjoyed this post!

How to contact homeowners associations to submit bids for services?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 09:03 PM PDT

    Hello,

I run a business that focuses on cleaning gutters. Our strategy is to severely underbid the competition, and it works.

Lately we've been doing single-family homes all across the area, but I'd love to reduce driving time by potentially getting entire neighborhoods and developments, particularly townhouses (connected housing).

I already ran into one job like this (pure luck) and the profit for my business was immense despite me giving a generous group discount.

I'm mostly just focusing on 3 things:

    1. I have no way of knowing if the association controls the gutter cleaning, or if people just get it done independently. If they get it done independently, maybe I could just have the HOA owner send out an email regarding grouprates?

    2. Should I just coldcall them, email them, or send them a letter?

    3. How do I find them? Google has some results and may work, but I'm wondering if there's any tools which could be useful for finding homeowner associations.

Thanks for any help - would love to find a way to get in bed with some HOA presidents.

Anyone with experience with Clinic franchisees within Canada?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 08:45 PM PDT

I know its possible to buy and run walk-in clinics within Canada. Does anyone have experience with this? Do you usually look for outside investment to expand to new clinics? Is it very profitable or are the margins tight? Im looking at approaching a friend who is opening clinics. It would be nice to know about some things before we talk about it.

    Charge back on ATM transactions

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 05:41 PM PDT

A few days ago I incurred a charge back on four separate transactions of $100 on my ATM. I've spoken with my ATM processor and told them that I have a video of the thief and all they're telling me is that it's no use because the bank doesn't care. What can I do to get my money back? Do all card thieves know the card owner's pin number? I had somebody pull out $600 dollars today and I'm afraid that it's going to be charge backed again. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Edit: I've tried to do some research on just plain Google but I only find articles and post about protection on the consumer side.

How can I build a community?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 11:25 AM PDT

I have developed a site to create and share courses, with an algorithm that say what lesson and when the user need to remember what he have studied, keeping for more time what he learn and the user can transform his class annotations into flash cards.

I get a lot of views in the home page but none sign up.

What is the best site to share startups or get investment?

Where can I get people to sign up for the beta, without paying for advertising ?

What is wrong and how can I make it better?

What are your biggest concerns with marketing/ad/digital agencies?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 12:46 PM PDT

I have been working for agencies of all sizes for the last few years. Before that I was working in marketing for small businesses. Now I'm off starting my own small marketing business. Having to do my own sales is new to me but working directly with clients is not.

SO MANY businesses have been burned by agencies or freelancers who think they know what they are doing but don't. People end up investing a few months of time with someone/an agency that doesn't end up working towards the business goals.

What are your concerns? What do you want to see from your agency? What do you think agencies overlook? What would make you take a chance on an agency or ease your doubt? Just looking for more insight, thanks!!

My company is partnering with another company. How should we move forward?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 04:25 PM PDT

I'm a freelance videographer/editor/motion graphics designer. I have my own company as a freelancer and work along side another freelancer with his own company.

We partnered up about 7 months ago. We're both from the same area, however I moved away 10 years ago and just moved back. So his connections and network are better than mine. This allows him to consistently get jobs and projects (something I'm not great at and don't like doing). Once I'm in front of the potential client, I'm great at explaining concepts and weaving their brand into the video. But this approach seems to put a lot of pressure on my partner to get more jobs.. and we need them to keep getting bigger and better to support both of us.

My partner's strongest skill sets are in shooting, running camera, and networking with clients. My best skills are in writing, directing, and editing. Together we've both noticed a substantial uptick in the quality of our work when we work together.

Our work together has attracted the attention of a local marketing company (affiliate - they have "branches" all over the US). They want to contract us to make all the videos for their clients locally (maybe other places in the future). The work they do is great and they attract big clients too, which means bigger budgets (better work) and better paychecks. This seems like a pretty great deal if it works. They would go out and pitch to clients and sell our services for us at whatever price we want. They get to offer more services they couldn't before and it's higher quality than they could do themselves, and just about anyone else in town.

This brings us to thinking about how to "officially" start a team. We've wanted to maintain our separate companies. Giving us options to work on projects independent from each other if we want. And if things go sour between us it kind of future-proofs it. But we're also trying to keep things simple. Trying to start negotiations with an agency to do work between two separate companies on the same contract sounds cumbersome and probably doesn't instill confidence. Ultimately, we want to try to reach a deal with this agency and then repeat and get a few more agencies constantly feeding us work.

Any thoughts or suggestions about how to move forward?

    Thanks!

my GF is a pastry chef at a private club

    Posted: 09 Jul 2018 04:06 PM PDT

my girlfriend has been doing pastries for a long time. the food industry is the only thing she knows. she recently picked up a 2nd job about 6 months ago. recently shes been baking a lot of sweets, cakes, cupcakes, etc. and giving them away to people. everyone keeps telling her what i great job she does.

today she said she thinks she would quit her 2nd job if she could make enough money baking on the side. i love to see her do this. however im concerned about how much money can she make before she has to start worrying about a business license or taxes?

there seems to be a lot "when your hobby becomes a business" pages out there on the net. but i would love to hear what redditors have to say on the subject.
