$30,000 worth of charges “pending with insurance” - how do I get this fixed? (U.S.)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:07 PM PDT

I have a chronic condition that requires me to get treatments at the hospital every 2 months. The bill is between 10 and 20k every time. Typically my insurance (carsource) covers it, but last July one of the visits was randomly denied and 13k showed up on the hospital bill as pending. Insurance said it was coded wrong. I called both the hospital and insurance about once a month since then. It was resubmitted and kept getting denied for coding errors even though the hospital said it was coded the same as all the other identical treatments that year. Insurance is saying if it's not resolved within a year they won't pay it. A year is only a few weeks away. I really don't know who's to blame.

Can insurance really just not pay?

If they don't pay then I'm not sure if I'm on the hook for the bill or what happens. I'm contemplating getting a lawyer but I'm not sure what my options are and what the laws are.

P.S. I also have another treatment from this May that just got denied (new insurance company) and neither the hospital nor the insurance can tell me why, so it looks like I might be starting the cycle over again. And my current bill is almost 30k pending on top of the 7k that I actually owe. Stressful.

Thanks so much for any help or advice!

(Update): How does insurance handle mold claims on vehicles?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:23 AM PDT

In our last episode, OP's vehicle was shipped from overseas to the US and when the shipping company opened the container, the interior of the vehicle was covered with mold.

Good News! The insurance company totaled my Honda and I'm just waiting for the check. Thanks to all the recommendations made here, I made the point to the rep that this car might be fine structurally, but who knows where all in the car the mold had started growing. In the A/C ducts? Behind the dashboard in the electronics? In the steering wheel airbag? I dont know how many estimates they got to remediate it, but they just came back with "we're totaling it", so its all good.

Thanks again for all the help!

Can an insurance company use a separate salvage value for vehicles totaled by hail damage?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:44 AM PDT

I was originally quoted $2900 (it's a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder) as the amount I would receive if I chose to keep the vehicle. The next time I called I was told that amount was incorrect and my amount would be near $2500. The explanation was that my initial amount was based upon their standard salvage value calculation and the $2500 was based upon a hail damage salvage value. Is this correct? To me it sounds like the insurance company is using a calculation just to reduce the amount they need to pay in a scenario where a totaled vehicle is more likely to be retained. Has anyone else experienced this?

Is it worth it to get insurance for a $5000 bike? Would it be worth it to file a claim?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:52 AM PDT

I have a nice bike for the first time in my life and it is expensive at $5000. Insuring it with Lemonade would be $10/mo + $500 deductible. If my bike gets stolen this year, and I have to use the deductible and file a claim, I know that I'm going to get my money's worth. But would it affect my insurance rates for my other insurance policies (home and auto with state farm). I looked at the riders for insuring my bike with state farm which is similar to lemonade, but I think that filing a claim for a stolen bike with my auto and home insurer would directly lead to: a rate hike, the policy of being dropped after they reimburse the claim, them marking my insurance claim record and sending me to second tier insurers to get insurance (more expensive).

    What do you guys think?

If I lost the bike, $5000 would not impact the trajectory of my overall finances. But if I lost the bike and I'm not going to claim it on insurance, I would lean toward a much cheaper bike after being soured by losing $5000.

Have car I'm being given by relative. What do I need to do to get insurance?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:31 PM PDT

Car is being given to me by a relative. The car is now in a different state than the relative has it registered in. The registration is expiring soon, as is the car insurance.

What do I need (documents-wise), and what do I need to do to get insurance, register the car (in CA), get new License plates, etc.?

    Risky Business Insurance

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:32 PM PDT

I see mostly car insurance questions but I have been trying to figure this out without just blind calling places.

I am wanting to start a risky business that is axe throwing. I am sure I am going to have to maintain a significant amount of insurance on the business.

Where do I go to start getting quotes for this kind of thing? Are their brokers that deal specifically in this kind of risk pool?

[Florida] Should I provide photos of the damage done to my car by another driver to the driver-at-fault's insurance provider?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:22 PM PDT

Hi, I was recently in an auto accident. The other party was at fault.

I decided to file a claim with the party-at-fault's insurance provider, as mine wants me pay a deductible for collision insurance, a deductible which they've told me is non-refundable, even when the other party is at fault AND my insurance company will make the party-at-fault's insurance provider reimburse them for the deductible they would require me to pay.

My question: Should I provide photo evidence of the damage to my car to the party-at-fault's insurance provider? They requested I do, and I casually and optimistically said I would. However, I later came across a post which recommended not providing much info, other than the need-to-know info, to the insurance provider I'm dealing with. So, is it better for me to withhold photographic evidence and allow the body shop to quote the insurance provider?

Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Question regarding total loss + gap + vehicle modifications.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:14 PM PDT

    Hello all,

Just looking for some advice on the situation I'm in, and curious of anyone who has experience with this. I was rear ended and the insurance company has decided to total my vehicle. I owe $13.5k, and the current payment from the insurance is $10k.

Now, I have gap insurance. Bought the car brand new and always opt for it. But I also have extensive modifications to the car including various tints, a full turbo kit with many upgrades, HID lights... all totaling to about $3,600 in parts (no labor).

I'm sure the value I'm gonna be awarded will go up from that 10k, but is my gap insurance basically gonna be useless? Let's say they give me the full value (which I doubt will happen), I would only end up pocketing $100 and the gap insurance wouldn't do anything.

I know I can call and cancel the gap insurance and get a tiny refund if that's how it goes, but is there anyway I could be compensated separately for the items I personally purchased and then use the gap? Hope I explained this decent.

Downside of getting on my girlfriend's car insurance

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 04:50 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

I have a question I would appreciate your suggestions on.

It's a bit of an odd situation, so please bear with me.

I need to get on to my girlfriend's car insurance as another driver of her car, in order to get a parking sticker (and hence be able to park) in her apartment.

The other option is paying a one time $60 fee and get on her lease as a room mate.

My girlfriend is not the greatest driver.

Are there any downsides to getting on to her car insurance?

Edit: I don't need to drive her car. I have my own car and my own insurance.

It's only that if I want to keep my car in her garage during the time I'm visiting, the property manager's rule is that I will need to be on her insurance.

Pretty much the title. Moving from IL to AZ in a few weeks, my current employer's coverage will end on July 31. My new employer requires a full month of employment before coverage starts. COBRA is $1600, marketplace wants over $1300. Do I have any other options? Thanks in advance!

Suggestions for classic car insurance without the secure garage requirement?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:42 PM PDT

I've recently inherited a classic car and I'm looking for insurance. Even though the (open) garage has cameras, 24/7 foot surveillance and the car is locked to a ground anchor, it doesn't count as a "locked and secured garage".

Any suggestions for classic car insurance without the secure garage requirement? Located in Nothern California. Thanks!

Stolen vehicle was found today with significant damage. What to expect?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:22 PM PDT

Hi everyone— My husband's car was stolen this weekend but police found it today with donuts/spare tires on the passenger side of the car, and significant damage to the front passenger side. I don't believe the adjuster is going to total it out as it all looks fixable, but now that it has been seriously damaged there is no way we are ever going to be able to trade it in. We live in Florida and have been with Geico for 10 years and we have comprehensive coverage. What are the odds that they will be taking in to account the fact that we have lost any value, however insignificant, due to the damage? Thanks in advance for your time.

    Healthy Michigan Plan fraud

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:16 AM PDT

In January of this year I applied for health insurance through the healthcare market place as I was about to lose my old coverage and was unemployed at the time. I was approved for the Healthy Michigan Plan and have been on it ever since, I've never actually used it until this last weekend though.

My issue starts here. I started a temp job about 2 1/2 weeks ago, but it completely slipped my mind to update my income for eligibility (it's my first time in my life on any government assistance). According to what I can find online, I would no longer be eligible by my weekly/ monthly pay amount. For the entire year though, I have made less than $1000, which would still make me eligible at this point.

Also, this past Sunday I was admitted to the ER through Monday morning. So, that's when I remembered I was still on the MI Health insurance; when I'm guessing I really should not still be eligible?

At this point I'm not sure what my next steps should be. I don't know if I've committed fraud, if the ER bill will be covered, etc? Also, when I go online to even attempted to update my application like it says to, I'm told that I'm only supposed to do it yearly at renewal? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

    Liberty Mutual run around

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:33 PM PDT

I have liberty mutual insurance. I've been trying for iver six months to get a vehicle removed from the policy. The vehicle was owned by my father and under his name on my policy. I haven't even spoken to him in over 8 months. I tried having him and the vehicle removed from the policy. He doesn't even own the vehicle anymore. They keep saying they will notify the authorities that the vehicle is no longer insured unless I provide proof of a new insurance on it. I told them to go ahead as we no longer have possession of the vehicle and now they are saying they can't remove the vehicle unless we provide a bill of sale which we nor my father have. So I've been charged for over six months of insurance for a vehicle I've been trying to remove from my policy. What can I do?

I think my wife screwed up a supplemental car insurance claim

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:19 PM PDT

My wife was in an accident 2 years ago before we were married and while she believed it to be a cosmetic issue for which she wasn't at fault there's now an issue with her Hybrid Inverter. Since the accident was so long ago she feels like it should be covered by her car warranty but it isn't since there is visible damage to the part and the dealership is claiming it's from this accident.

Because she's adamant it should be covered by warranty she went to her insurer and asked them to confirm there was no internal damage from this accident. She failed to realize that now she could be liable for the full cost since she basically asked the insurance company to not cover it so it would be covered by warranty but, in fact, it most definitely will not since the part is damaged in a nature that would be consistent with the accident even thought it was two years ago. Does this mean we will not be able to make a supplemental claim? It's all very frustrating for me since I'm not able to handle since it's her insurance and it was her accident.

Insurance surcharge after cancelled claim and poor field adjuster

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:08 PM PDT

Earlier this year, after an ice storm in Mid-Michigan, I found that the wind and ice had pulled up shingles and badly damaged a stretch of gutter. After speaking with a contractor to repair the damage, we were given an estimate of $4000 for the half of the roof which was damaged, old and falling apart, as well as the gutter. The roof in back which was damaged was estimated at about 25 years old, but the roof on the front of the house had been replaced by the previous owner approximately 5 years ago. We decided that we would take the premium hike and file a claim with our $1000 deductible.

After contacting the insurance company, the field adjuster was sent out to inspect the damage. It had snowed that morning, and the back where there was damaged was covered with snow. Because this part of the house is two stories and it was slippery out, the field adjuster looked at the front of the roof to determine what the replacement cost would be. He did not inspect the rear roof which was 20 years older than the front, and determined that they would only cover patching the spot which had pulled off. They immediately sent us a check for $220, and after speaking with the adjuster, we decided to cancel the claim and return the check.

We ended up paying out-of-pocket to have the roof and gutter replaced. While the roofers were doing the job, they commented on how bad of shape the whole rear roof had been in, and that it basically had just peeled off without any effort. They were able to perfectly match the new roof to the front because again, the front was replaced just 5 years ago and was in great shape.

Cut to now, and our annual policy is up for renewal. There is a $300 claims surcharge fee on the bill, which is more than the payout was even going to be. I was able to confirm that the returned check had been received by them and cancelled on our claim a while back. I have contacted the insurance company to inquire about the charge, but their response has simply been that the system is automated and they don't know why our premiums increased. This seems like a weak cop-out, being that it states it is a, "claims surcharge" right on the bill.

Naturally, I am very frustrated by this, and I am hoping for advice. I realize now that we should never have started the claim, but alas, that part cannot be undone.

    Thank you.

Stolen Bike-Advice for claiming homeowners Insurance

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:35 AM PDT

So my 2016, $2000+ mountain bike was stolen this past weekend from a skiing resort. It happened right in front of the ticket stand and all the resorts cameras were off. I'm 23 and hope to be covered by my parents homeowners insurance ($1000 deductable). I'm in the process of getting the police report.

What are your recommendations for going about this? I have the $2000 invoice, plus receipts for a couple hundred dollars worth of upgraded parts on it. There are also a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff on the bike that I won't be able to prove/have receipts for.

Do you envision any snags that could stop me from at least getting the bike covered. My biggest priority is at least getting something over the deductible. Is there any chance of getting something for the parts I don't have documentation for? Any tips for talking with the insurance adjuster to get the most insured possible?

Let me know your thoughts. Any help appreciated!

    Thanks!

Claim denied because provider did not give additional information to insurance co.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:55 AM PDT

    Hi r/insurance.

I have received good advice in the past and I think you in advance for your attention.

My insurance denied payment for a CPAP machine. I paid for the device out of pocket and am seeking to be reimbursed.

I then filed an appeal and provided the results of sleep tests and a letter of medical necessity from my provider.

In response to the appeal, my insurance stated that the provider I purchased the CPAP from did not put down a medical billing code on the paperwork. They contacted the provider from whom I purchased the CPAP machine but they did not respond to their letter.

I ended up being denied the benefits as the provider did not respond. What is the next step? Is there anything i can do?

Changing jobs, need to get my own insurance. Help understanding the timeline for QLE?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:05 AM PDT

Basically, effective 8/1 I'm moving to a job which doesn't offer health insurance, so I'm going to have to get it on my own. I currently have insurance through my current job, which should end on 7/31 since that'll be my last day.

What I'm wondering is since I know of this change now, how should I go about getting my new insurance timing wise. I don't want to have a gap in my coverage, so does this mean I should start applying for insurance now, or after I lose coverage from my current company? If I wait until after I lose my current insurance, does it get backdated to 8/1, or is it a gap between when I get my new insurance and when I lose my existing?

    Thanks for any advice!
