Looking for participants for research on the gig economy

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 08:11 AM PDT

    Hello /r/entrepreneur!

We are a group of researchers at the University of North Carolina headed by Dr. Mohammad Jarrahi (https://sils.unc.edu/people/faculty/mohammad-hossein-jarrahi), and we are investigating how work arrangements in the gig economy are developing around digital labor platforms. Specifically, we are interested in the platform Upwork, and we are looking for interview participants who have experience hiring freelancers through Upwork. We think the people of /r/entrepreneur might have some experience using Upwork, so we are asking you to help us out by participating in an interview about your interactions with the platform and with Upworkers. The interview would take less than an hour, and can take place by phone or video chat. We will make sure your identity will remain confidential. We are offering a $20 Amazon gift card as a token of our appreciation for your participation.

If you are interested in participating in this study please send me a message or email us at [sils.gig.study@gmail.com](mailto:sils.gig.study@gmail.com) so I can schedule a time to talk with you. I am also happy to answer any questions you may have about the study, and we would love to hear about your experiences with Upwork in this thread.

I’m really bad at sales and it is hurting my business big time. Any recommendations?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 10:25 AM PDT

Last year I started a coffee importing and roasting business. Initially I caught the interest of many people but after delaying sales for about three months after I first announced publicly about my company people lost interest and sales have been very poor ever since. So far I have invested around 30k in the company and sales have been around 5k since August last year. I have told about my product to most people I know but they all either bought once and never came back or never bought any coffee at all. The issue is definitely not the product since it is one of the highest end coffees here in America and one of the freshest too. Everyone who's tried the coffee have said that they haven't had a coffee that good but I'm very disappointed that many have not purchased again since the first order. What am I doing wrong? Also, they aren't lying to me about quality since the coffee was cupped by a professional and was rated 87 which in coffee terms in very high end. The price is also not that high, I sell the 12 oz bag for $32 which is a standard for high end coffees. I will take any advice you have for me? Do I need to invest more in an advertising company? Do I need to do more research about my niche market? Who would you recommend for marketing purposes if I were to follow that route? Do you know any marketing guru who could help me getting the business off the ground? I'm truly desperate at this point. Please help me!

My inventory app is live on Product Hunt today

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 06:38 AM PDT

Hi r/Entrepreneur. I recently released a major version of my inventory app after gathering feedback from existing customers and paying attention to their pain points. The response has been very positive and we have been featured by Apple in the "New Apps We Love" section of the App Store, as well as the recent App Store story, "How to streamline your small business." It was great to see the app is also on Product Hunt today.

Here are some things that made a big difference for this version:

    - Rebranding: The original name was StoreKeeper. To say that it was troublesome was an understatement. After hearing too many: "...what was it called again? I knew the app needed a new name.

    - Design: Version 1.0 required too much work to get started. Version 2.0 went through a big overhaul to address this.

    - Icon: I created the logo one week before launch and changing the background to black resulted in double the downloads.

    - Quickstart Guide: I included a quickstart guide to help new users get started. I'm now working on producing more support materials like videos.

Please check it out. If you need to keep track of stock and don't need the accounting portion, you might find it really useful. More details here on the website.

How to find a small business partner?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 07:23 AM PDT

Long post; thanks in advance for reading and any advice! TL:DR at the bottom.

About me: I want to own/be a partner in a small business. I understand the hard work, dedication and skill it takes to even attempt to operate a small business but I know I can do it. I have the time and expendable income to make it happen.

I have a bachelor's degree in PR and an associate degree in accounting. I also have taken several classes pertaining specifically to small business management. I have 11 years experience in accounting/bookkeeping roles and have successfully worked alongside small businesses in consulting roles in both finance and marketing. I have great customer service skills and a lot of patience for the general public.

I know that education alone cannot prepare you to run a small business, but here I am anyway.

Problem: The ideas that I have for starting a small business aren't particularly creative, innovative or new. For example, I have plenty of experience in bookkeeping but with significant competitors like free & paid software and accounting firms, it would be difficult to differentiate myself or bring something new to the table in that field.

I'm also not crafty, so I wouldn't start a home based product business to sell on Etsy or other websites. I'm also not an engineer, so even if I found a problem that no one else had solved, I doubt I could rig up a product to solve that problem.

So, for my question: How can I find someone with a product or service who needs what I have? I am ready to dedicate myself to building a company but I don't have a thing to sell.

TL;DR: How can I pair up with someone with a product or service, who has no business education or experience?

Website Building Business with Friend - How to Pay Taxes?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 02:35 PM PDT

Hi all, I am planning to start an online business building websites with a friend of mine. He is the software developer, and I focus on graphic design (we'll have logo services as well).

We live in different US states.

Does anyone know, or can you point me to, a place to figure out how we would report taxes?

As of now, we haven't set up an LLC. I'm curious if this can be done through sole proprietorship - are we able to split the net profits and individually report them on our tax returns?

Thanks! The more info the better. I also realize it varies by state.

Can I arrive with a truck and trailer and pick my stuff up or do I need some kind of middle man to deliver it outside of the port?

Looking for a good book on starting a clothing brand. Any recommendations?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 01:51 PM PDT

I'm looking for a general way to get my feet wet and I'm having trouble finding the proper text to introduce me to the business. I was hoping there would be some kind of book out there that walks you through the process, maybe even an autobiography that walks you through it.

At such an early point, it feels hard to know where to begin and reading about the process seems like the best bet.

Do you guys have any recommendations?

How to start a hardware business from scratch?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 01:21 PM PDT

    Hello, /r/Entrepreneur

Me and my best friend have been planning to start our own business from a year or so, and we've stumbled across many ideas, but nothing really inspired us to get out of our echo chamber and scratch that itch, until we ran into this IOT product.

This product is a game changer if marketed properly. It is going to be very beneficial for business owners since it is targeted towards businesses.

We have a business model, and contacts, but no prototype. That being said, there's already a company in this segment who are doing okayish, and we have a plan where we can do better than those guys.

The only thing that has been bothering us that we don't have a prototype, but i can ask around a few friends of mine to put together a working prototype. Now that the prototype and the software that goes with is ready, do you think it's the right time to raise some money which is going to be exclusively used to manufacture the hardware?

We don't have contacts with hardware manufacturers, but instead have with investors and a state run accelerator.

How much money do you think goes into the manufacturing the machine? Since the machine is going to have probably a small processor followed by a few sensors.

Should we get in touch with manufacturers/just build the machines in-house? It's going to take a lot of time if there are customers waiting in the line for the product.

How to work out this whole ordeal?

P.S :- Sorry if the title and the post don't match - My brain is swamped so i ain't thinkin straight.

Business Idea - reddit tracker. Send email for user defined actions.

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 01:13 PM PDT

Some alerts don't exist on reddit. Like notify me on karma change or if someone commented on a thread I'm participating in but not directly to me.

I'm thinking about building a website that gives you more alerts.

Could charge a small fee like 5-10$ per year or attach ads to the alerts.

Would take me about a month to build properly (not full time)

    Thoughts?

***for Free*** Facebook Pixels, Event Tracking, Google Tag Manager And Google Analytics. - I Can Help You..

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 12:11 PM PDT

In the next 3 months or so I hope to go full time Freelance, before this however I need some more clients for my portfolio. If you own any sort of website then I may be able to help you..

I have been working as a Data Analyst for the past 5 years. In the past 2 years I have been specializing in setting up event tracking on websites and using this data to help websites make data driven decisions.

    What is Event Tracking?

Setting up Event tracking allow you to measure how many times a user interacts with a certain aspect of your website. This could include:

    • Newsletter Subscriptions
    • Form Submission tracking
    • Conversion Pixels on key Events
    • Form Abandonment Tracking
    • Link Clicks
    • Video Interactions
    • Social Media Link Click Tracking
    • Download Tracking e.g. PDF's
    • Banner Clicks
    • Scroll Tracking
    • Virtually everything that a user can interact with on your website.

This data can then be sent to Google Analytics and you can see what kind of traffic is helping you gain the most Newsletter subscriptions etc, or see if users are interacting with your content/videos.

I can also help with setting up the Facebook Pixel, Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics.

As long as you have Google Tag Manager installed on your site, or are willing to put it on your site I can help.

Originally I was going to try sell my services here, but for the sake of getting a bigger portfolio it will be easier and quicker just doing it all 10000% for free :).

College Application/Resume Proofreading and Advice Business

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 11:45 AM PDT

I'm a current college sophomore and an idea popped into my head. I live in a fairly high income area, where nearly every kid applies to one of several colleges in the area. Based on some research, I know that there are already several online businesses which do this on a far larger scale, although their rates are atrociously high (~$150 for proofreading of a 500 word essay). I am fairly certain that I could pull this off locally, but don't know where the best place to advertise the service would be. Advertising personal businesses is prohibited at the local high school, and craigslist seems to have nobody offering this particular service. Would targeted facebook ads be a good idea? Posting on the nextdoor app?

Having went through the entire process 2 years ago, I know how stressful it can all be and paying $50-$100 (when you are already paying up the butt for college applications) for a sense of security would have been worth it to me. I know what the elite schools in my area are looking for on an application, and consider myself to be a good proofreader. If anyone has done anything similar, any tips or advice would be appreciated!

    Has anyone tried: Appsketch.io?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 11:36 AM PDT

I came across this site called [www.appsketch.io](www.appsketch.io) where they claim they can convert your sketch designs into native apps for as low as $149 USD per month. Since I am a solopreneur with no money nor coding experience, this sounds pretty good to me, specially because I have already my app fully designed for iOS and 80% done on Android and Web in Sketch.

But is it the right direction to go? Is it legit? I am also not sure if they can actually pull my app concept off.

Please think of my app ass a combination of Groupon + Doordash + Airbnb in terms of design and workflow. Thanks!

    Need suggestion for inventory app

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 03:59 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

My sister runs 2 alcohol shops and runs all the inventory in her head. I think that's silly and just not worth it. Is there a CRM/ERP type of app that can automize this? And can you link it to the till to update the inventory in real time?

The tool should show all items in stock, possibility of reorder automatically if stock gets low, app would be nice to be able to check and order on your phone, and basically act as the backbone to the entire supply chain - if I can call it that.

I'm sure there must be loads of solutions like this, just want to hear what you guys use. Thanks

How do you continue on in the face of adversity?

    Posted: 04 Jun 2018 07:26 AM PDT

I've started a website in a niche that already has a couple pretty dominant players - however those players do not have even close to a majority of the target market. The target market is all US based people that travel internationally (estimated around 70 million), but the major players in the niche have fewer than 5 million combined. However, whenever I ask for advice (either on Reddit or elsewhere), people just say it will never work and reference the major players in the field as their reasoning.

Don't get me wrong, I don't anticipate getting anywhere as big as those guys, but I figured if I could carve off a small percentage of the total market share, I would be happy. My website has been active for less than 3 weeks, and I already have over 5,000 page views and almost 200 people on my mailing list. So, it makes me believe that there is still room for one more here, but I am getting frustrated by all of the negativity I am receiving. Does anyone have success stories or thoughts on how best to overcome all of that?

P.S. If you are interested in more specifics, you can check out my site here for a visual reference. And yes, I know I need to switch from a free wordpress site soon, but I just want to make sure I am on a path to making some money before I shell out any dough. https://thewrightflight.wordpress.com/
