If you don't see your post, you probably need to load more comments at the bottom. Also, all posts are sorted randomly, so the sort function doesn't seem to work.

Posted: 02 May 2018 12:48 AM PDT I'm currently working on my startup full time, and while a lot of progress is being made, cash flow is always a problem. I'm strongly considering cutting back on the startup to three days a week and using the other three or four days to find freelance clients. Since my skillset is more towards the backend and Ops side of things, I wanted to offer up custom Infrastructure on one of the cloud platforms. I'm planning on targeting startups, small businesses and entrepreneurs who want to get off Heroku, Parse, etc and get on a cloud platform such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, etc but don't want to deal with the hassle of managing a cloud infrastructure. I was thinking about charging around $500 - $1,000 on a monthly retainer based contract, but I don't want to overprice or underprice myself. Any thoughts? I'm still toying with the idea so please share any thoughts or comments. [link] [comments] |
Hottest high tech Startups to be excited for Posted: 01 May 2018 07:31 AM PDT Which new startups or products specializing in cutting edge new tech or futurist technology are you guys most excited for, in the near future. These are big technologies that are going to massively change the way we do things if they manage to achieve success and become commercially viable, past examples of these innovative companies and products are big and beloved names like Paypal, Facebook, The Apple iPhone. Also do you predict that the company or product is going to achieve commercial success and mass adoption or not? [link] [comments] |
500 active accounts / 3 weeks. Now what? Posted: 01 May 2018 02:18 PM PDT I build software / hardware products at work but also build tools / apps / advise startups in my spare time. One of my side projects is a development / product tool that solves a problem most engineer/product/software founders experience when building a new product. In short, it get products to market faster (12x on average) and reduces the cost to build that product by 80%. I ran ads ($250) and now have around 500 active users. I'm also close to signing the first enterprise client. A few questions:
My strategy is to keep doing what I have been doing until I see a clear path forward. Any suggestions / hints / questions would be helpful / appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Offering beta testers a life time discount? Posted: 01 May 2018 11:32 PM PDT Hi, The service will be priced at $150 per month. Is this a good or bad Idea to agree to? [link] [comments] |
Is there a standard rate for an Investor "matchmaker"? Posted: 01 May 2018 02:04 PM PDT We've started looking for an Angel investor. I can met with someone with a pretty impressive resume (On a number of advisory boards, sold companies, former CEO) who says he has an extensive network of investors and he helps startups secure funding. His rate is 5% of the initial investment from investors he introduces and 2.5% of additional investments from those investors in the 2 years after the initial investment. So for example, if he helps us secure a $500 K investment, he gets $25K. If that same investor invests an additional $1 Million 2 years later, he would get an additional $25K. Does that sounds reasonable? P.S. This rate is after I already did some negotiating with him. [link] [comments] |
Founder Thoughts: Ending a Partnership Posted: 01 May 2018 12:54 PM PDT Well, we've hit one of those periods where a lot of startups crash and burn, but I think we're navigating the situation as well as can be expected. It's not hard to notice when your co-founder doesn't share the same work ethic and drive to build a substantial business. It's something I initially thought could change. Every time we held meetings he would leave so motivated that it gave me hope. Unfortunately, the change in behavior never seemed to manifest. I met with him recently to discuss the fact that we weren't seeing eye-to-eye regarding our priorities. The conversation was calm and rational, and went as well as you could hope. Ultimately, he agreed to continue working with the company until I find someone to potentially take over his responsibilities as tech lead. He'll then stay around to integrate whoever that ends up being (if anyone) before going spelunking in South America, or something. At the moment, I seem to face a couple different options: pick up all of his responsibilities myself, and learn on-the-job, or find someone to replace him. I've made enough mistakes in the "Co-founder" scenario to know how difficult it is to find someone worth investing my time and effort with. Partners should compliment your weaknesses and share your vision, dedication, sense of purpose and expectations. If there's misalignment in any of these areas there will surely be problems. In my experience, partnering with someone out of convenience, scarcity (fear), enthusiasm for the idea, or just because they can do what you need doesn't tend to end in success. The thought of looking for a new partner is certainly daunting. If you're going to do it right you have to get creative and invest the time and energy required to produce a quality outcome. However, I also can't say the alternative is any less daunting. I would need to learn an unfathomable amount of new skills. ROI-wise a new partner would be a better bet. We can move faster, addressing the products glaring flaws, and move into a space where we have the opportunity to shape an entire market. If I go the do-it-yourself route, we most certainly would take longer to get to a level of market-shaping potential, and by that point the opportunity may have completely shifted. The one thing that makes this scenario palatable is that we're already producing revenue in the low 5-figures and I'm confident we can grow this into a good business, maybe just not a market-creating-business. These are the current options as I see them. Right now I'm attempting to reduce my risk by preparing for both scenarios. I'm learning Python (already have a decent grasp of the front end) and tapping my network for quality leads. I'm not super optimistic I'll find someone deserving anytime soon, but I can keep the business moving forward, which I imagine would only strengthen the appeal to potential candidates down the road. Wish me luck. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2018 09:00 AM PDT Hello Reddit! I'm working on a startup idea with my CTO. We already have a wireframe, but neither of us are graphically skilled. How did you go about finding the right 3rd party app designer for your idea/startup? What sort of price ranges did you tend to find, and what were acceptable? What do you look for when finding a designer? What is the average expected turnaround time? Any help is greatly appreciated! Please excuse this extra fluff because I need to hit the 500 character minimum for a text post to this subreddit. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2018 05:01 PM PDT Hi all! Hoping to get a little collective advice on minimizing information asymmetry in a quickly growing startup. Common problem that I'm sure some in this subreddit have experienced before - small startup, with quickly growing teams, and information, collateral, etc is ending up silo'ed within each team. Would love some advice on tools or resources you'd recommend to help centralize info and minimize the silo issue as much as possible (acknowledging it's hard to ever truly solve in a fast moving startup). I've worked in startups who have built their own internal drives, used Google Drive, etc, but would be great to develop a central hub with a little light branding and organization outside of just folders upon folders in a Shared Drive. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
BioTech Weed Startup Post-Interview, Pre-Contract Salary Increase Question Posted: 01 May 2018 01:55 PM PDT Hello All, I accepted a position for a scientific officer position in a startup company working with nanoparticles and weed. I'm finishing up my PhD in Biomedical Engineering in Ontario, Canada. The CEO interviewed me and asked for 60K salary plus bonus, for which I asked for 65K salary plus bonus and he agreed. The CEO described the role for me, but I didn't quite get the full scope of the role, and understand where the company was. I haven't received my contract yet, and started attending some meetings for which I'm planning some tests. I understand more of my roles and what value I can bring to the company. I feel I can dramatically shift the companies values and goals. As I haven't signed a contract yet, I was wondering if an increase in salary is still possible. Chief scientific officers (CSO) get paid on average around 100k in Ontario. I think the CEO is trying to sideline me by not giving me a CSO title, but simply a SO title. There is no CSO, as far as I know, and I would be fulfilling what a CSO essentially does. I was wondering if I can ask him for 80 k providing a 20% discount from averaged CSO salaries. 80K is knowing that he may counter me with say 75K, which would be great. My questions are:
PLease let me know. Any advice would be fantastic. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2018 12:32 PM PDT Not sure if this is being posted in the right subreddit but anyway... I work in a digital marketing agency, and I'm starting my own social media marketing agency up on the side, but they're not aware of it. The websites ready to be launched, I've created social accounts for my agency and been running them for around 5 months now. It's a lot of stress and work but I bloody love it! I need to keep my job at the agency I'm currently work for in order to try and lift my side agency off the ground. It's a tough one. I'm skeptical about launching the site because that's when things really start to become public. Should I tell them? Do they have a right to know? Any advice is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
How does one find and gain beta users for an upcoming app? Posted: 01 May 2018 11:59 AM PDT Hello everyone, For nearly three years, I've been working on a new social media platform that aims to get people to share more authentically. In an era where fake news is running rampant, users are constantly curating/portraying an online image of themselves, and people are beginning to question whether or not social media is even good, I feel as there are is a strong demand for a place where people could simply be themselves without anxiety. I designed and programmed the entire thing on my own, with help coming in from a few people when it came to testing. Now that the app is pretty much ready to go, I'm looking for some beta users who are not only willing to rigourously test the app, but are open to the idea of a new social media app that has a structure unlike what they've grown accustomed to. Authenticity on social media tends to have a strong, but false stigma of being "boring", and I'd love to get people who have an even stronger desire to break that stigma. I don't really have many friends, so I'm wondering if there are services or groups I can post to where I can gain at least 20-25 beta users in a decent timespan. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Being the first and only salesperson for a company that is abroad? Posted: 01 May 2018 07:35 AM PDT Hey Gang, I(American living in America) am in deep conversations with an organization based in Israel to be their first official salesperson in the US. I have some super solid domain experience as my last company was essentially a competitor. We agreed on a base salary which is fine. But he's asking me about an agreeable quota- my response was understandably "We would need to take a look at marketing, sales, and win/loss data in the very least". However, my real questions are this: what are things I should take into consideration regarding working remote for an international company? Benefits? Tax? General advice? I'm just completely in the dark about this sort of thing. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2018 07:33 AM PDT To what extend will this hinder me? I am not American. Should I make a brand new Paypal on my old name while I wait for the bank to verify and update my details? What other things should I consider to overcome this obstacle? I'm in a situation where I have to update a lot of my payment methods anyway, I'm sort of returning to freelancing. But this is an issue I'm not quite sure how to deal with. [link] [comments] |
