Square vs other options-for credit card processing for a small business Posted: 06 May 2018 04:31 PM PDT In the process of buying a small bar in a small town. The current owners do not utilize credit cards and I think it is holding them back some. But I've heard so many horror stories about credit card companies/machines from other business owners I've dealt with over the years in my real day job that I really don't know where to begin or what to trust at this point. I've researched Square a little bit. But I'm wondering if there are hidden fees and potential issues that they're not telling you about up front just like every other credit card company. The way I understand it it's basically a 2.75% fee for every transaction regardless of the putchase. That's it. That's all they are supposed to charge. It seems much better than what I've heard about other companies in methods. Anybody have any experience or recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Small business student looking for some help. Posted: 07 May 2018 01:53 AM PDT Hello everyone. I am a business student, currently taking an Entrepreneurship class. I have an assignment to interview a small business owner in order to understand how different small businesses can run. I would appreciate the time anyone could take to DM me for a short interview and perspective into what it really means to be an Entrepreneur. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2018 04:11 PM PDT So my SO started a new role last year in business development (Australia based). Through her role she has worked herself in a monopoly where she has no competitors. These customers speak to her only as well, not through her work. Because of this, we are looking at setting up a 5050 partnership, to become the first competitor. This is a huge conflict of interest if someone from her work does a company search and discovers she is one of the parnters. How can i mask this so she can maintain her current job as well as contributing to this partnership. My initial thinking is to create the partnership in my name then to have a separate jv/partnership agreement that sits behind this partnership. If so, do these agreements need to be witnessed by a lawyer or rather? [link] [comments] |

Does my fast casual restaurant idea sound good? Posted: 06 May 2018 01:37 PM PDT So its pretty much a build your own quesadillas place called QuesIdea. You would go down a line in a faced paced style like subway chipotle and mod pizza. Build your own from our variety of fillings like different cheeses, meats and veggies or choose one our own creations like Philly cheesesteak, Pizza, Taco and Fajita quesadillas as well as dessert options, vegetarian/gluten free and different flavor options for tortillas that include Tomatillo and spinach. If anyone has any question lmk also any feedback is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Are there any good examples of landing pages for physical products? Posted: 07 May 2018 01:07 AM PDT I recently launched one myself and am now trying to optimize it. But most of the examples I've seen are either apps or services, so I wonder if it's even possible for a physical product. Any suggestion or advice would be helpful. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2018 11:25 PM PDT Hey All, I appreciate any feedback or adice you all can share. I recentely registered my company as an LLC and have had some questions about accounting and tracking expenses. So prior to registering my business I used personal expenses to pay for equipment, inventory, software and registration expenses. Question1. Can I count those purchases as business expenses even if they occured prior to my registration date? Question2. My business still isn't profitable and I have to continue to use personal funds to keep the wheels spinning. I am tracking the expenses but since they are coming from personal accounts and not my business acounts how do reconcile the cost / revenue? Do I treat the money as a loan from myself, how do I track when I pay that money back?
I know accounting can be the bane of many new business and I want to keep good accounting practices from day 1. Thanks again! [link] [comments] |
Advice Needed! How to handle cash sales in a small business Posted: 06 May 2018 01:25 PM PDT Hey guys! I would appreciate some advice if anyone could share some for my situation. I am one of three shareholders in a small startup. We recently started earning income, Basically just cash based sales from participating in a weekly event. My other two business partners do not want to report/deposit all the cash that we've started earning money because "they don't want to pay sales tax on everything". Personally I do not want to take this route and I would like to know if anyone could share some points on why undereporting our cash is a bad idea. Here's some more back information in case it helps: I joined this business early this year, and it had been incorporated as a C-Corp a few months prior to me joining. We elected to be taxed as an S-Corp a bit late so that won't be effective until the next tax year. My role in this business includes basic bookkeeping duties. I setup a quickbooks account and have been recording our income and expenses in there, my partners are not necessarily business/finance savvy, so they don't have an extensive knowledge of how business taxes really work. Much of their information has come from some friends of theirs that have their own businesses(sole proprietorships, from what I understand) and apparently they don't "declare" all their sales so my partners feel they should be doing the same thing. My main argument to them was that we should deposit all our cash so that we are able to pay for future rental fees for upcoming events where we can bring in more income. One business partner's response to that was that we can deposit some of the cash in one of her personal checking accounts, and if we ever needed to access that money for future expenses that can't be covered by what's already in our account, that she can "transfer the money into the business account as an additional investment". Besides the obvious bad paper trail this creates, can anyone help me with some other points as to why this is a terrible idea and just possible to simply transfer money into a corporation? My partners have an accountant they started working with prior to me joining, who they plan to discuss strategies to "hide and handle cash" with. My instincts are strongly against this, am I being too paranoid/by the books? I really appreciate any advice that might help me convince my business partners to do things more by the book. Right now they think I am being too "paranoid", etc. I believe there are better legal ways to reduce tax liability that doesn't involve hiding cash in personal bank accounts or in shoe boxes in someone's home! Posted: 06 May 2018 09:15 PM PDT Started a new company similar to a meal kit delivery business and am looking for any/all advice concerning shipping/packaging cold boxes. We're currently beta-testing locally and hand delivering the boxes, but would like eventually to offer shipping nationwide. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
What are some problems you face in your small business?? Posted: 06 May 2018 08:45 AM PDT I'm a network engineer, I own a small IT services shop specializing in network and security consulting. I figured this would be the best subreddit to ask this as there are small business owners in all industries.. Just curious to see if anyone can share some of the problems, or inconsistencies they face as a business owner that could potentially be solved via technology? Just trying to get some insight as to the problems real business owners face, so see how people of my skill set can best help them. Not a sales pitch, just genuinely curious. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 May 2018 05:56 PM PDT So I run a social media agency, I started it about 18 months ago and went full time at the beginning of this year. My first client, Client A I gave a steal of a deal too, and about 10 months ago we signed a one year agreement locking his base management fee at $250 per month. This is significantly lower then anyone else, as my current base fee is $800 a month. The reason for this is because my first client took a gamble on me. I had little experience, no experience to point to as a reason for him to invest in me. I told him honestly "You are my 1st client I am going give you a price that needs to stay confidential because other people will not get your price" I now have a dozen or so clients and do this full time, recently Client A referred a new client to me. Client B management fee starts at $800 a month. We sign the agreement, I start work. 2 months go by and Client B is yelling at me asking why I'm charging him 3x more then Client A. I explain that Client A was my very first client, I gave him a deal to get my foot in the door. However there is no way I could effectively manage and do what I do for less then $800 a month and that since I've gone full time thats my starting management fee. He's threatening to stop paying me. And I'm just not sure how to handle this, first off I'm pissed because Client A broke what I saw as a confidential agreement between the two of us. He had exclusive pricing because he took a gamble on me. My new oncoming clients aren't taking that gamble, I now have a track record of success behind me. In fact I consider myself to beyond fair, example I never work for the direct competitor of my clients. I'm constantly staying up to date on their business, and have proven real value. I understand I have legal recourse to enforce my agreements, that is not the advice I'm seeking. What I'm looking for is, how would you handle this? [link] [comments] |
What businesses are complementary to high-end sports clubs? Posted: 06 May 2018 12:28 PM PDT 100 acre high-end sports club proposed for my neighborhood. Will have tennis, racquetball, pool, cafe, spa, cardio, weights, basketball, etc. Will be a purpose-built, all brand new facility on what currently is raw land. Right across the street is a <20 year old shopping center with a moderate amount of vacant space. Center lost its anchor tenant [Albertson's Grocery] a couple of years back. I see opportunity to site a new business in the shopping center, right across the street from 4K folks who clearly have some disposable income. [link] [comments] |
How much equity/earnings for an idea? Posted: 06 May 2018 09:38 AM PDT My friend and I (and possibly one co-investor) are starting a small business in town. My friend initially got the idea for the business but I will be giving around 95% of the money needed to fund the firm. My friend will be running the firm alongside me and possibly deliver supplies to the firm. What percentage of the profits should he earn considering he didn't fund almost any of it? Thanks for answers. [link] [comments] |
My blog has made a total of $500k over the past three years — Should I go full-time? Posted: 05 May 2018 05:36 PM PDT Long story short, my blog has earned a total of around $500k over the past three years ($200k in 2017, $200k in 2016, and $80k in 2015). The blog is about 6-years-old. I have a full-time job (~45-65hr/week making $60k/yr). The website has always been a part-time gig that I work on at night/weekends. I spend anywhere from 2-10/hours a week on the site. I've been toying with the idea of quitting my job to go full-time on my site. I'm thinking I could work on it for a year just to see if I can ramp up content creation and hopefully increase traffic/revenue. If things went well then I could see myself continuing to grow the site. If things didn't go well I figure I could continue working on it part-time as I have the past six years. My main concerns: All my income is all affiliate-based. My Amazon affiliate income is around $120k/yr — so it's a huge chunk. I'm diversifying to other affiliate income streams but I would currently take a huge hit if Amazon was to change their commission structure. I was down about $25k from 2016 to 2017 because of a commission change early last year. I'm 35. My current career path favors the young so if I were to leave for a year or two it would be hard to get back in. Basically, I'm already 6-8 years older than most people at my experience level so I'm already in a weird spot. That said, I don't hate my job but sometimes I look at my bosses working crazy hours and wonder if I could do that (even though they're making $250-400k). This is a big worry... I worry about the blog puttering out in a few years and then I'm a 40-year-old dude with no real prospects — then what? I'm still a long ways away from retirement and my current career would be essentially over. I live in a high cost of living city. My wife and I really don't feel like leaving for awhile. I'm having a hard time seeing a path forward other than "keep making content". And maybe that's is the right path? Positives: The website is a legit established site and I'm not doing anything shady so I don't worry about Google shunning me. It's also in a subject area that I don't see ever going away/becoming less popular. We have a savings cushion should anything dramatic happen. We have $250k in savings in addition to $120k in a SEP IRA. No debt or student loans. No car. We rent so no mortgage. No kids (but this could change in the next year or two). Wife has a job so I can get fairly affordable insurance through her. So yeah — I'm not really sure if this is a dumb idea or not. Any advice would be really helpful. [EDIT]: I'm not going to share my site — for obvious reasons. [link] [comments] |
Need suggestions on bottle labelling Posted: 05 May 2018 06:35 PM PDT Hey all. We just started a spice company, and the most tedious and frustrating part is labelling the bottles. They are full wrap around and are hard to line up and put on perfect. We currently do this by hand, and just wondering if there is a simple solution we can do while we are in the smaller phase of our business. You can see the labels here : https://freshorganicspices.com/shop. Any suggestion would be great, as getting an industrial machine right now is just not in the cards. [link] [comments] |

Programs, apps and software used to organize expenses, invoice ect. Posted: 05 May 2018 01:13 PM PDT Apps / programs / software for business owners I am a sole proprietor who uses my vehicle for work. Now I use "waveapps" to take pictures of and store all my receipts aswell as create and file my invoices I find this program works extremely well, categorizes and displays my yearly info with ease. And as for my vehicle I use an app called everlance which tracks my mileage and is easily sorted into groups. I use wave apps for fuel and maintenance and all that on my truck but was thinking about maybe keeping that on everlance aswell so it's kind of separated although I don't think it really matters in the end. So I have good success with these programs, I'm curious what you people use, and what you find helpful to keep your business organized, just want to brainstorm with like minded people maybe I'm missing something or can get some tips. Thanks [link] [comments] |
