Your car gets totaled, but you haven't paid your car off yet. What happens?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:12 PM PDT

So my friend just got into an accident. Her Honda Accord is relatively new.. about 1.5 year old with ~10k miles on it. She still owes 18k on the car, but just got into an accident. The accident was not her fault. She was at a red light, and the van behind her didn't stop and hit her pretty hard. Her car is now totaled.

I was wondering how the insurance pays for it. Do the insurance pay for the amount that is still owed on the car or does they just pay for the amount that the car is worth? If they do just pay for the amount the car is worth at the time of the accident.. let's say 10k... does that mean she needs to pay the other 8k out of her own pocket?

    Question on out-of-pocket

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:10 PM PDT

My current health care plan has a $500 deductible. Easy enough to understand as I have to pay $500 out of pocket before insurance covers anything. I then go into co-insurance territory which is 80/20 with an annual out of pocket maximum of $1500. Again I get this part as it's just that I pay 20% of all eligible costs up to $1500. Now reading this as it sits I would take it to mean the most I would have to pay out of pocket for eligible services in a year is $2000. However there is a third line involved here labled as maximum out of pocket limit which is around $7300.

I did some research on this and all I can find is that it somehow relates to Obamacare and the limits imposed on individual health plans, but I don't get how this applies to me. If my out-of-pocket is $2000 per year, where does this additional limit come into play? Is it just a disclaimer added to all policies? I can't find anything in any searches that really explains the difference between what is labled as my out of pocket maximum, and this separate out of pocket limit.

    $3,000 property damage limit?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:13 PM PDT

Ok, I will keep this short and to the point. I rent out a $400,000 townhome in Los Angeles from my grandparents. Yesterday, the whole downstairs was flooded by a burst pipe. The insurance company sent someone yesterday to come look at the damage. Today, the insurance company called and said that there is only a $3,000 dwelling coverage limit on the policy and that the guy they sent to look at it is charging $3000 to assess the damage. So, they cannot cover anything else. My question is how is there a property insurance policy that doesn't even cover 1% of the property value?? They said even if the place burned down to the ground, they would still only cover $3,000. The policy has $300,000 in liability and $30,000 on personal property (which they said only covers the landlord's property...which there is none). Does this make sense at all?

    Engagement ring insurance options?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:49 PM PDT

I was gifted some pieces by my grandfather to use to make a ring for my SO.

Well upon working with a goldsmith friend we've done just that and upon appraisal after the fact apparently we've got a five figure ring on our hands... This number has surprised me quite a bit and I'm now worried about the insurance side.

I am planning on talking to my homeowners insurance provider soon (reading the policy is like greek) but I wanted to hear the POV of some people in the know on what my options are to cover this.

Do homeowners policies typically cover something that expensive to replace?

Is loss or theft outside of the home covered?

Is there a better option for insurance that I should be considering?

Is there an advantage to a separate policy and not relying on my homeowners policy?

Thanks all. I appreciate any and all feedback.

Where should I go to get an estimate for repairs after a bicycle/car accident?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:50 AM PDT

I was recently involved in a collision in Cambridge, MA while on my bicycle and while the injuries were less severe than it could have been and are healing(fractured coccyx and sprained wrist) my bicycle took a bit of damage. The insurance company has since told me they will cover it and that the driver is fully at fault.

Overall the mechanical repairs have been minor with only needing to retrue my rear wheel and tighten the belt drive system but the bike frame, front and rear fenders, and the pannier rack all received cosmetic damage. I had only just purchased the bike in November so it was in perfect condition prior to the accident but I am having some trouble figuring out how to explain the cosmetic damages and getting an estimate for the repairs.

How should I get an estimate for this repair if the damage is primarily to the paint on the bike frame? Is there anything else that I should be thinking about?

A California government website steered me to an insurance company, but I'm starting to think what I bought is not legitimate.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:26 AM PDT

I recently turned 26 and had to get off my parents insurance. I spent a long time on the phone checking what the insurance covered, of primary importance I was told it was a "PPO with unlimited hospital coverage". Tonight I was checking through the entire website to see if there was any mention of psychiatric coverage, but I stumbled across a list that terrified me, basically saying I have 100$ a day hospital coverage for up to 10 days a year. This was nothing like what they told me, was I scammed?

the company is Axis plan name: Legion Limited Medical

It's california and they have an...interesting approach to medicare and if I did the wrong thin by following the one of only four links on their .gov website I don't know how the fuck to get insurance. I spent days trying to figure this out.

[advice needed] My plan through United Healthcare was supposed to cover out-of-network care with a ~6k out-of-pocket limit. I now owe 50k in medical expenses.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:39 PM PDT

When I tore a ligament in my ankle, I went to the nearest orthopedic doctor, for whatever reason under the impression that they accepted my insurance. However, I was reassured that 'I would hit the $1500 deductible really quickly, so it wouldn't be a big deal'. And so I went through all of the standard things you need to do when you tear a ligament, e.g. getting a medical boot ($35 on amazon, $1500 + $1000 fitting fee at the doctor btw), getting an MRI, etc. Since I 'filled up the deductible quickly', I went to some other close out-of-network healthcare specialists, who gave me the same line - 'you've already filled up your deductible, so you just need to pay this co-pay'. I know I should have done my research on all of this, but this is my first time having my own insurance, the plan promises that you can get out-of-network care with a maximum of ~6k out-of-pocket fees, and my parents had the same insurance for a while and never had any issues.

Well, I checked my insurance portal today, and it turns out that I owe nearly 50k in medical fees. The vast majority of this is for getting a medical boot, a cast, and a couple check-ups on my ankle. The rest of it is from psychologist visits up to the tune of $400 per visit. Some of it seems to count towards the 'out of pocket fees' while other stuff does not for reasons that I can't discern. Almost nothing was covered by the insurance, and I was charged for things that don't make sense at times (e.g. a bone in my foot was bruised so I was charged separately for a broken foot cast fitting while my ankle cast was put on).

I don't know what the fuck to do or where to even begin in terms of processing this information. I don't understand anything about it. Apparently my in-network out-of-pocket max was already met even though the only in-network appointments I've had were a few visits to a psychiatrist? Even though I apparently haven't spent a cent of my deductible? Why did my orthopedic doctor and psychologist tell me that everything would be fine- shouldn't the orthopedic doctor know that this would cost me 40k? Why doesn't my "good" plan cover basic shit like cast removal and orthopedics doctor visits? I can't afford to pay 50k in medical fees because I've spent a total of 30 mins talking to a doctor and got a cast put on. I don't even know what to do.

I have a regular PIP insurance. Will it cover a windshield crack?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:25 PM PDT

I heard only comprehensive insurance covers a new windshield. I have the cheapest only liability to the other car insurance. I don't really want to call yet to find out. My window was cracked by a fallen object from a truck in front of me on the highway. I'm fine but I wasn't able to get the trucks info so now I'm stuck. Do I have to pay with my own money?

Error: I don't have PIP, only liability insurance I apologize

22 and decided to go with a 20 year term life Insurance policy

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:59 PM PDT

I have no real debt like a mortgage or anything. No kids. Just wanted something to cover expenses if something were to happen. The amount is way more than I (the beneficiary) needs. But felt like it needed to be done. Did I make the right decision with term? Or? Should I have went with whole? Years later if a life event were to happen. I thought I could invest in a different policy that would cover past that age if needed. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Insurance Company Liability Investigation (Progressive) differs from GA State Crash Report

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:03 PM PDT

Hi - I just read a similar post and am wondering if anyone is aware of how one might go about getting a "second opinion" by a third-party, objective professional so as to contest the findings of "fault," determined by a private insurer that contradicts the finding on the traffice itation. ie, the other driver was executing an illegal u-turn and was cited for that, yet when I filed a claim for damages from her insurer, they have responded that their own investigation found that I was at fault. I'm contesting it and am looking for resources (I have contacted the state ins commissioner as well as my own insurer). I would appreciate any information. Thank you!

Hit and run - Is my health insurance reimbursed or is just my Copay paid?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:28 AM PDT

We live in Virginia. My husband was involved in a hit and run. A car hit him while he was on his motorcycle and the guy fled the scene. Witnesses say it was entirely the guy's fault. We have Progressive with basic insurance which includes an Uninsured Motorist Policy which pays up to $25k per person for bodily injury $50k for a whole accident.

Unfortunately the cop is taking his time to provide my insurance with the police report so any claim progress is on hold as they can't officially declare this is uninsured motorist right now. But they said once they get the police report there should be no problem.

So for now, the medical bills for my husband's broken arm are going through my health insurance and we're paying the out of pocket maximum. The total bills so far are easily going to go over $25k. Thankfully my health insurance out of pocket maximum is only $2k. I have already been charged that because the surgery center demanded payment up front.

Once this police report business gets cleared up and Progressive puts the claim through the uninsured motorist policy - Will they they only reimburse us the $2k we paid out of pocket or do they pay us back up to $25k for the entire bill? What happens if the bills are over $25k? I've heard different things and just want to know what to expect.

Buying car for the first time

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:58 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

So I'm buying my first car this weekend. I have moved to a different state than my parents for work and I'm still on their auto insurance plan until the end of May.

Do I need to buy my own car insurance before I make the purchase? Or can I use my parents insurance for a few more weeks?

    Question regarding probate

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:07 AM PDT

Hi everyone! Not sure if this is the right sub for this. My father was on long term disability and peacefully passed February 10th. We contacted UNUM who his disability was through and the rep mentioned we are entitled to the rest of his disability. They said theres 15,000 that would be split between my sister and i. He said we had to go to probate to get the paperwork (paper we got for was only 6,000 or less) So we need a form to turn into probate court regarding survivor benefits of long term disability we are both over 25 and the amount is over 6000 no surviving spouse. What form do we get? How do i do this???

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:50 AM PDT

Registering a car to leave in Florida as non-resident - registration questions

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:58 AM PDT

Non-resident here. Never dealt with Florida car registration.

I want to purchase a NEW car to register in Florida. I will be getting Florida insurance and garaging at a rental property in Florida. Since I'm not a Florida resident, I have an out of state license.

    • If I buy from a dealership outside the county where it will be garaged, can the dealer still handle title and tags?
    • If I buy out of state, can I get it titled/tagged without bringing it to Florida for 60 days? (Where I'd be getting it (MO) does offer 30 day temp transit tags, but I have a business road trip that would keep me from getting back to Florida for 6 to 8 weeks)

    Thanks in advance.

If this would be better asked in another forum, I'm all ears.
