I [22F] feel immense guilt when I spend money because it’s not going towards my loans.

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 06:46 AM PST

I graduated last summer and got an entry level job in my field making $35k. I moved back in with my parents, which they are totally okay with. I picked up a second job for evenings and weekends to quickly finish paying off my loans. I have $22k under my name, but I'm also paying off the $40k we have in Parent Plus loans by myself.

I put my entire paycheck towards my loans and am very close to having them down to only $40k. I've always been very responsible and ALWAYS do the practical thing. I worked my butt off through high school while having a job, went to community college for a year before transferring to a state university. While in university I was VP of 6 organizations, graduated with honors, had a job the entire time, and had 3 internships under my belt.

This being said, I'm exhausted. I haven't had a day off since high school. Ive found myself becoming dull and depressed because i have no assets, no time off, no sex life (living with my parents), and I'm in the suburbs away from anyone remotely my age.

So i booked a trip to Hawaii where i can lay on the beach and be quiet and just have 5 seconds to myself without being responsible for something. My parents approve and said to go have fun. I'm looking forward to having fun and building memories. I used my tax return to pay for it, it's a $3k trip total.

I feel so guilty though because I'm so dedicated to paying off my loans and i know this is not the responsible thing to do. Does anybody else struggle with the balance between living life and paying off loans? I'm so afraid I'll waste my 20's and have no memories or fun to show for them.

TL;DR: I have $60k in debt, living with my parents and put my entire paycheck towards the debt. I feel guilty about the vacation i planned. Please delete if this doesn't belong here! I'm really struggling.

Stupid question: PSLF for a foreign government school?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:55 PM PST

So I'm assuming this is a stupid question, but I couldn't find specific answers why this couldn't qualify on the student aid government website so I thought of asking for sure. Does the time spent at a foreign government school qualify as time spent working for "government organizations at any level"? Do I need to transfer to a public school in the states and work there for ten years before I can qualify? I've made $70k in payments and I'm sill $140k in the hole.

I'm not trying to be a scumbag here and fleece my government; I'm just getting desperate, as the payments on my loans consume almost the entirety of my salary here.

Do I need to join the military to remove the debt faster?

Is borrowing $50k for student loans a bad idea?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:54 PM PST

Basically I wanna go to SUNY Buffalo but for two years (I am a transfer) as a CS major I would have to take out at least $50k. I am trying to figure out whether this is a good idea or not? I am not really getting to many answers. I hope here helps me out.

    Repayment via garnishment

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 02:12 PM PST

So here's where I stand with my loans:

Loan 1: $5,979.38(including collection cost listed below) Collection costs on Loan 1: $1,161.98

Loan 2: $8,243.17(including collection cost listed below) Collection cost: $1,601.90

Loan 3: $4,121.45(including collection cost listed below) Collection cost: $800.93

Interest rate is fixed at 6.8. I'm currently having 15% garnished from each paycheck. I don't mind this so much since I can work some OT to cover the full garnishment each period. My question is this:

Based on those numbers above, with a total monthly garnishment amount of roughly $320, would it make sense to just let the garnishments happen, if my planned regular monthly payment after loan rehab would be less than that anyway?

If that's the case, what's the timeframe look like until it's paid in full?

What to do if on IBR and getting graduate loans?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 01:47 PM PST

I am paying back undergrad loans through the IBR plan. I now have decided to switch careers and become a teacher. I am going to graduate school. I am eligible for graduate loans. My question is this: Will I still be eligible for the IBR plan after grad school for my undergraduate loans? I had asked a person who works for my undergrad loan servicer if I could just pay the Master's degree loans back separately (in case they end up being the same servicer as my undergrad) and they said that any money I sent would go to the undergrad loans first since they were taken out first. It seems that everytime I call the servicer I get a different answer. It's almost as if though they don't know what they are talking about. Anyone here have better information? Thank you.

    Wife's student loan woes

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 11:22 AM PST

Short version... Wife has been making minimum payments on all her loans per advice of her mother... meaning they've gone up from the initial. Not sure what i should do or where to even go so we can make sense of this. Posted in /personalfinance but studentloans is probably better discussion for consolidation/refinancing Below are her loans:

    • Discover Private loan - $5816.10 @ 10.75%
    • Discover Private loan - $5986.22 @ 9.375%
    • Subsidized Stafford - $4483.13 @ 4.5%
    • Unsubsidized Stafford - $2508.77 @ 6.8%
    • Subsidized Stafford - $5451.97 @ 3.4%
    • Unsubsidized Stafford - $2375.27 @ 6.8%
    • Unsubsidized Stafford - $1175.35 @ 6.8%
    • Subsidized Stafford - $5545.46 @ 3.4%
    • Unsubsidized stafford - $2239.81 @ 6.8%
    • Unsubsidized stafford - $5599.58 @ 6.8%
    • Subsidized Stafford - $4043.17 @ 3.86%
    • FFEL Subsidized Staff - $2612.33 @ 5.6%
    • FFEL Unsub Stafford - $1946.97 @6.8%
    • FFEL Unsub Stafford - $38940 @6.8% All loans are through Great Lakes besides the discover loans. I'm assuming we need to consolidate / refinance. Both have credit scores about 750 and I make about 80k a year and she's right around 60k before taxes. My students loans are only $33k and I already pay $150 over what i'm supposed to which is $450 a month

EDIT: guess i should include other monthly bills

    • 1043 house payment
    • 417.63 her car
    • 395.73 my car
    • 183 phone bill
    • 188.80 insurance
    • 250 for all utilities
    • 65 internet
    • 172 some stupid levin's card that is currently at 0% APR
    • 391 discover card (about to refinance her 4700 credit card debt to discover which will need pays off in 18 months)

Accepted to PSU...how to go about all the student loan stuff?

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 10:37 AM PST

I was accepted for Penn State University for Electrical Engineering. There is about 17,000 available for me for aid from FAFSA, inclusive of 5,500 for direct subsidized loan and 2,000 for direct unsubsidized loan. I would need to take out loans elsewhere, so what is the best strategy for going about this situation? I'm going to be saving up money from my job until then, plus I'll try to get a job to work on campus or elsewhere if i can. I have a 752 credit score at age 22, if that helps with responses. For housing, I might take up someone's contract or I might look into an apartment (still trying to get that squared away)

    Student Loans with no cosigner

    Posted: 09 Mar 2018 07:20 AM PST

I have applied for the Fasfa but I know for sure that I won't get anything because my mother makes too much. She has helped with school as much as possible but cannot and doesn't want to do it any longer. I am at the point where I need to take out student loans, with that said, I have no one to cosign for me. My credit score is in the good range at 735. My worry is that I am 21 and my income at the moment isn't that good, I am in the process of trying to find a better paying job. Is there any recommended loan agencies that you all would suggest? Thanks
