[GA] help with 2 claims and insurance renewal Geico

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:35 PM PDT

    Greetings,

I am renewing my auto insurance and find out 2 claims 1.5 years ago. In GA and currently with GEICO.

    1. A parking accident. Both parties were moving and had a little scratch on the other car. Geico claimed me 0% liability, however, in the end, Geico paid $500 to the other party. Right now, I saw an at-fault claim for this on my CLUE history. (Report is on the way, and I don't see any in MVR report). Because Geico didn't claim me any liability and even now their agent still see me zero liability in their system, is this an error on CLUE? can I dispute this to CLUE in this case?

    2. Had a windsheild chip repair with GEICO. Geico didn't tell me it's a comprehensive claim (I have $500 deductible). Now it shows the repair $75 as a comprehensive claim. Should I dispute this to Geico and CLUE? If it's comprehensive claim shouldn't $500 deductible kick in?

Looks like my insurance premium has been drastically affected by these 2. Does comprehensive claim affect rates?

Also welcome any recommendations on cheaper insurance company. So far, looks like progressive is the cheapest one.

    Thank you.

Should you always file an auto insurance claim?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 05:16 PM PDT

Originally posted in PF, but this may be a better sub.

First some background. There was an insurance claim made against an at-fault insured for a rear-end accident in Oregon. Claim was denied due to inconsistencies, went to court, but was settled for ~$6,000. The accident occured May 2015, but was only settled September 2017.

Fast forward to today. The same insured party purchased a used car (2007 Forester, ~90k miles) for ~$10,000 late last year, still owing ~$7,700. The vehicle is fully covered; Comprehensive, Collision, & Liability. Last month the insured was involved in another accident, again at fault and in OR, though no other party was involved. No driving citations other than the first accident are on record within the last three years. The accident caused major damage, and though a complete estimate has not been conducted, the frame has been damaged and would likely result in repairs upward of $4,000. (Front left corner was bent upward, new bumper, hood, fender, frame pull of left frame rail, and other unknowns).

The insured, who resides in Washington, is concerned about being dropped from their insurance company, increased rates, temporary loss of transportation etc. The vehicle miraculously is still drivable, and the insured is considering foregoing another insurance claim.

From a financial standpoint, it seems to me that they should take the hit to their insurance. As far as I understand, the first claim will drop off their record in May - can someone here confirm this? Also, if they ever want to resell the vehicle, doing so would be nearly impossible in a few years with 10's of thousands additional mileage and frame damage.

Any insight from those in the insurance industry would be appreciated.

(ONTARIO, CANADA) Car & Tenant Insurance Issue (+ bonus question about switching)

    Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:34 AM PDT

Car insurance and tenant insurance are with the same company. We are in ONTARIO, Canada.

Car insurance was due March 17, but due to the holiday weekend it came out March 20 as an automatic payment. After the payment came out, another company charged our account in error, causing the account to go into negative. The bank charged an NSF fee and then reversed our car insurance payment to cover the NSF. This was not discovered until we had returned from work after midnight so we immediately paid the car insurance from another account (paid March 21 and received by them March 22) and emailed the insurance company with the story and screenshots. They advised the car insurance policy would be suspended and the next automatic payment for this policy would be cancelled, so we would need to send $35 fee for the lapse and our next month's insurance. I have paid this all off as of this morning, and the bank and company who charged me in error have rectified the situation with refunds and covering my NSF fees.

The new issue is that our tenant insurance was due to come out on Wednesday and it did not. They did not mention this payment being stopped in any of our correspondence. I have not gone ahead and paid it because the last time they didnt take the money out and I sent it instead they sent me an email telling me not to do it because it "defeats the purpose" of the automatic payment system. I have sent an email outlining all of this.

I am worried they are going to charge me another fee because they didn't take my tenant insurance money now. Is it likely? What can I do?

We are also considering changing insurance because in all correspondance they are incredibly snarky, or avoiding answering questions by advising to just trust that they know what they are doing. We are not sure how to go about changing insurance or if we will be charged more money to switch.

I have been out for a month and am currently receiving 75% of my 60% weekly benefit. My job wont let me come back to work full duty, nor can they accommodate/work around my injury from on the job.

Is there any reason why I am getting screwed out my full 60% benefit?

Credit card's purchase assurance/extended warranty tricky claim question?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:08 PM PDT

TL;DR : I thought the warranty expired on my laptop according to misinformation, opened a purchase assurance claim with the insurance company, who asked for the documents for warranty dates, in the process of gathering the documents, I found out that the warranty only expired AFTER opening the claim or during the claims process. How does it play out in situation like this? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I bought a laptop on clearance, it was a great price, basically 50% of what the real price is. However, the warranty I was told it is only upto 1 year from the manufacturing date because I bought it from a 3rd party seller on Amazon Canada. Hence the price.

So the laptop of course died around Feb but since I primarily use a tablet I never cared for it. My co worker told me that we have something called purchase assurance which will double the warranty if your credit card has it. It is a capital one credit card with costco. I checked and was pleasantly surprised it did indeed have it.

When I called to start a claim, it was around the end of feb, the laptops manufacturing date was somewhere on the 2nd week of Feb 2017 as per the box.

They got all the information down, and sent me a pdf to fill it out. I did the procedure and then I got a response to show me the actual dates of the warranty expiry. When I contacted the manufacturer, they said your warranty expired on March 3rd week, which is just a week ago. So what happened was, the seller bought it from them after they manufactured it after a month or within a month. So they counted that date as the warranty beginning date.

My question now is, when I opened this claim, it was before the warranty expired, I opened it by the end of Feb (according to the box and what I was told the warranty already expired based on the manufacturing date) but now when I actually inquired the manufacturer who took a few business days to verify and got back to me said, the warranty expired but only a few days ago.

Will the insurance company make this a reason to deny the claim? Because when I opened the claim apparently the laptop was still under warranty, but during the process of the claim, the warranty expired.

If i had waited a month to open a claim, this would not have been an issue.

Vehicle registered to my business but used personally

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 01:57 PM PDT

I have an auto parts store, and I have a vehicle registered to that business. It is registered under the business name since I bought it at an auction that only licensed businesses were allowed to attend.

I use the car very sparingly, and only for personal reasons. It is a Cadillac CTS-V. I want to get insurance, but not sure whether to go commercial or personal policy. Do you recommend any companies?

    Thanks.

Someone hit my “illegally parked” car

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 05:11 AM PDT

I had to run over to my friends condo, he lives in your typical condo complex, assigned parking sports, separate spots for visitors , gated...ect. There were no visitor spots left and being that it was a quick in and out trip I parked my car along a curb and ran in. About 3 minutes later his neighbor knocks on the door stating he backed into my car. Damage is about $1000 (to my car),he filed a claim with his insurance and gave me the number. His insurance company never returned my calls so I opened a claim with mine. My agent contacted his insurance on my behalf, they (other guys insurance) stated they are in the process of gathering documentation from the condo complex to prove I was illegally parked and they will likely want some type of shared at fault settlement.

I admit, I was parked against a curb and it was not a spot but does that give someone the right to damage my property? My agent said he will send this to arbitration if they do commit to a at fault percentage. I live in New Jersey, any advice would be great.

Bad idea to put my girlfriend's name on newly purchased car title so we can insure thru her USAA membership?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:40 AM PDT

Just bought a car. Live-in girlfriend has USAA and they seem to be the lowest quote we can get for the car. Bad idea to put her on the title just so we can insure it through them? Disadvantages to me in the future? I'm not high-risk but I haven't had my own insurance for several years (hand-me-down car that stayed in my father's name).

EDIT: Per advice I'll be putting the title solely in my name and getting quotes from a couple independent agents in my state. Thank you for the guidance!

    Insurance steadily raising each month

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 05:17 PM PDT

    Picture of bank statement

Why is it slowly increasing each month and why does it say 77% of $450 why doesn't it just take the whole $450. I agreed to $325 monthly for insurance I'm not sure why it's going up. I know it's probably a simple answer and I sound dumb lol

Caused minor, very low-speed accident, yet other driver- a kid- is claiming personal injury. Suspicious of insurance fraud.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 03:55 PM PDT

I was driving my wife's car when we were in a very low-speed accident on the freeway. I rear-ended a pickup in front of me driven by a kid that had stopped very abruptly, I believe because he rear-ended the car in front of him which was driven by his father which he didn't report to the police. The damage to the pickup was very insignificant- a softball-sized dent in the bumper, yet unfortunately my wife's Prius suffered a broken headlight and dented fender.

We filed the claim with her insurance this weekend and everything was progressing well until this afternoon when we got a call from a higher-level claims adjuster who informed us that the kid who was driving the pickup is claiming personal injury. I'm suspicious that this is insurance fraud. Can I trust Geico to sufficiently investigate this, or is it their practice just to satisfy claims like this and pass on the cost to me through a raise in my rates. Is there anything we can do to fight this claim of personal injury?

    Am i overpaying?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 03:47 PM PDT

i am 20 years, i drive a chevy impala. i was in one accident in 2017 in february, so its been over a year. my car was hit while parked and off in 2016 as well but i dont think that matters for insurance prices as it was parked and off. So 1 Accident 2017 , my fault.

i am currently paying $3600 a year for a 2005 chevy impala with an insurance company called integon. I live in Long island New york. I am wondering if i am over paying because my girlfriend who drives a lease under her own policy is paying $200 and i am paying significantly more ( more then the worth of my car) then she is and she is a year younger and has a 2018 model car.

Is living near a water tower considered a flood risk?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:52 AM PDT

We just bought a new house, and it's right by the township's water tower. As far as I can tell according to the FEMA site, we're in a low risk flood zone. But I can't really find any information about if a water tower nearby could be considered a flooding risk. We need to decide if we should get flood insurance or not, and I'm curious to see what others would do if they lived near a water tower. Thank you for any information!

Possible insurance fraud by my doctor??

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 08:26 AM PDT

So my husband was feeling like he had the flu so I recommended he go see my primary care physician. When he went they swab him for the flu but also said since he was a new patient that they do a lab work up. He said ok. They took blood and urine. Fast foward we get a bill from some hospital, cities away. The total cost was over $5000. After the contracted rate and what the insurance paid, our payment due was $945. We were shocked. (This was for a toxicology screen which they didn't do on me as a new patient, and I have no idea why they would get one on my husband. He didn't go in for anything other than checking for the flu.) So we called the doctors office. We talked to some guy who apologized that the bill was routed to us. He asked that we foward it to him via his private email. He stated that the office and the hospital that did the lab work have a deal and that we don't need to pay it. So with how relieving it was it was hard to believe, so we called the hospital that did the labs. They said that they need to go through the motions of sending out the 3 bill statements. After the 3rd bill statement they will write off the bill. All of it sounds fishy to me. What do you think? Should we do

    Hanover insurance - Excluded driver?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 12:58 PM PDT

Hoping someone is familiar Hanover insurance and rating polices. My agent is telling me that even if I exclude my girlfriend on my auto policy she still needs to be to be rated which a foreign concept to me but then again I don't work underwriting or the agency. It doesn't make sense to pay for a driver who will not be driving my vehicle and even if they do drive it, they're basically uninsured

I have a gap in my personal insurance but I've been covered in the meantime under a commercial policy through work. Can I use that to cover the gap?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:51 AM PDT

I haven't had personal insurance since 2015. Obviously that leaves a significant gap. I am covered though under our commercial policy at work with no incidents and daily driving. If I were to get something like a reference letter from my employer and their insurance company, can I use that to drive my rate down? Cheers!

EDIT: I should mention, I am in Alberta Canada. No issues with tickets or accidents.

What's the point of an independent insurance agent?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:34 PM PDT

I'm currently working with an independent insurance agent, and I can't figure out what their point is.

He doesn't seem to be getting me quotes cheaper than ones I can pick up on various insurance websites.

I've seen people recommend insurance agents, but I just don't see why.

I'm getting married in June; my fiancee and I are traveling to Montana for our honeymoon. We will need to rent a truck when we there; I've never rented a car or dealt with insurance on my own before. What do I/we need to do? Thanks in advance!

Need help understanding hospital assistance language for $11k ER bill

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:13 AM PDT

Had to delete and re-post as it wasn't displaying the entire post for some reason.

Long story short, my fiancé did not have health insurance coverage from August 2017 through December 2017. His new insurance, through the marketplace, started on January 1, 2018. Being a completely healthy adult male who has never had any health issues in his entire life, he naturally had to go to the ER in December while uninsured... complete fluke. Fortunately, he was approved for hospital assistance to cover 100% of the hospital bill he received for that day. We received the official letter yesterday and I have some questions on the following wording:

Your request for hospital assistance has been approved. Your financial responsibility is 0% of the hospital bill for services beginning on (date of service). The hospital may provide assistance of 100% of the hospital charges for any future hospital services for a period of 12 months from the initial date of service.

This assistance will not cover non-hospital fees, physician fees, dental fees, not medically necessary services, cosmetic procedures, insurance penalties, transitional care unit, convenience items and in some instances, labor and delivery.

I have a few questions about this:

    1. He was seen by so many different people that day in the ER. When the bills started rolling in he received six bills in total. The letter says it will cover all hospital bills... does that mean all the six bills he received are covered since we only went to the hospital and was seen only at the hospital? Or since these came from different offices might some of these not be considered "hospital bills"? For example, the one bill is from a medical imaging office. It sounds like this office is contracted through the hospital to provide a service to patients. Does this count as a hospital bill or not? The "non-hospital fees and physician fees" language is what is confusing.

    2. The above language says it won't cover physician fees, dental fees, etc... I read this as that he still needs to keep his marketplace insurance for any non-hospital health visits. However, a condition of having a marketplace insurance plan is that you are not covered by any other insurance. Does this 12 month coverage for hospital services interfere with his marketplace insurance?

    3. The above language also says any future hospital services for a period of 12 months from initial date of service are covered at 100%. Like I said, as of Jan 1 he has insurance. If he had to go to the hospital again tomorrow, how would that work given he now has insurance?

How much insurance premium increase after a claim

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:01 AM PDT

I don't want to go into details but we had an accident the other day and we hit a car from behind on highway while that car crashed another car from behind. My car needs a good repair and will probably cost about $1500 -$2000 my deductible is $500. I am worried that insurance premium increase will be more than the difference between deductible and the cost of the repair. Any insight? It's WA, USA

How much un/underinsured insurance to get (TX)

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 09:50 AM PDT

Another Reddit thread got me thinking about our un/underinsured coverage. Right now we have the following: Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists - Bodily Injury $100,000 each person; $300,000 each accident

Thinking about upping that. We can do 300K/500K for an extra $30 every six months OR 500K/1m for an extra $44 per six months. Don't want to do the max if it's overkill. Any advice on the best coverage is very much appreciated?

Hit by a commercial vehicle this morning.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 12:02 PM PDT

On my way to work I was in the middle of the road (in my car) when a porta potty sucking truck started to back up toward me. I honked and tried to go into reverse but didn't have enough time and he crunched the front of my car. I didn't think it looked that bad but later I took it to a body shop and they estimated the damage at $3800. Also now that the hood was opened it will not close again meaning it is a danger to drive on the highway which is a nessessity for me.

I basically don't want to be taken advantage of by insurance or anyone else. There is no argument that the accident was the truck's fault. There was a house with street facing camera and I'm trying to get that footage from them just in case. I'm going to NH in less than 2 weeks. Body shop said it might be at least 2 until I even can get in the shop. Should their insurance cover my rental or will they fight me on it? Also this will cause me to miss some time at work dealing with this hassle so I don't want them screwing me. Any advice anyone can give? I had an old lady total my car 5 years ago but never had to worry about repairs so this is different. What about depreciation due to now having body damage? Any money I can get out of them would be great.

Progressive Snapshot question - hard brakes not listed ?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:26 AM PDT

I've had a snapshot device for about two weeks and have been driving well. I've had 3 beeps total for hard brake while driving so far - twice because someone pulled out in front of me from a side street and I had to brake to avoid rear ending them, and once because I simply braked too late.

When I log into progressive, I don't see any hard brakes listed. It shows 0 so far for every day I have driven. Any ideas why? Do you get a freebie per day or something?
