What happens traditionally when a young couple gets married? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 04:23 PM PST Maryland, USA. I'm 22F and getting married in August. My car insurance (Erie) told me in the past as long as my listed address is the same as my parents, I can stay on their policy. I plan on getting married and want to change my last name, I do have a full time job with benefits and discounted car insurance, but the rates for a 22 year old female with a 2017 car on her own are worse than those in getting now with my parents. I no longer live with them but my agent told us to keep my address as theirs since I'm renting and have not purchased my own house. Fiancé and I plan on buying later this year, my mom suggests I hyphenate my last name so I can legally sign with either, or keep my maiden name and just sign my new married name until I'm 25 with my own policy (25 is when my rates would drop significantly). I could get it with my job, discounted, but coverage may not be as good. Fiancé and I have insurance through the same company so any changes would be discovered by the company on the other persons end, we just have different policies (obviously). My question: what do young married couples do in this predicament traditionally? Pay more to change their name or wait until later in life to change their name? [link] [comments] |
Car was deemed totaled and I'm not at fault [MA] Posted: 07 Feb 2018 05:33 PM PST Someone ran a stop sign and I got the call this week that my car was deemed total loss. Metlife told me Monday that my rental would end in 7 days leaving me now 5 days to find and buy a new car. I asked to have the rental extended to the full $900/30 day limit but the adjuster told me they will not extend the rental as it is only 7 days after being informed in total loss. I will not be able to get a loan and purchase a new car within the next 5 days, can I pursue the person's insurance who hit me to help with covering a rental until I can find a new car? Also, the adjuster valued my car about $1,000 lower than what I feel it is worth based on KBB/NADA values for my mileage and condition based on similar cars in my area. Can I dispute the cash value he determined my car is worth? I can't even buy the same exact car now based on how much they valued my car at. This whole process has been extremely stressful and any help is greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
When should I ask for the adjuster's manager? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:47 PM PST I'm going through a homeowners Insurance Claim, and the Adjuster is constantly low-balling ALE benefits, that had been agreed upon prior; treating my wife and I like we are 10. All while reminding me every 5 minutes that he has 20 years of experience in the field. I know that it his job to pay out the least possible, but I am at a loss. I have never had the "pleasure" of dealing with anyone like this personally or professionally. We have yet to come to terms on the estimate for the actual damage to the house, but i am wondering if i would be better off asking for the manager or another adjuster to handle the claim? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 11:39 AM PST I was in an collision involving 2 cars. Accident happened while roads were snow covered and icy. The car struck was rubbernecking on a blind hill, and came to a near stop (<5km) in the right lane due to a ditched car. The left lane was occupied by a 3rd park car (not involved). At the top of the hill, I witnessed the slowing/stopping car and tried to break/stop myself. Thus lead to an aprox 10s of decelerating/sliding and horn blowing that resulted in my car striking theirs at <15kpm. Will fault be split 50/50 because they were stopped at the bottem of a blind hill, or will the 100% fall on me since i struck the stationary car? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:22 PM PST This happened in Virginia. An acquaintance backed in to me while she was exiting her parking spot. She admitted fault. Her insurance (Erie) accepted fault as well. I took my car in for an estimate at a local shop that is preferred by Erie. The estimate was at least twice what I was expecting. The adjuster for Erie wants to send the check to the body shop. I want the check and I'm planning on going to a junk yard and getting my own fender and bumper (I drive a very common car in a very common color). We've been playing phone tag so I have not spoken to her directly since I got the estimate. I own my car free and clear. Any suggestions or advice on what to say? [link] [comments] |
How is fair market value determined on an uncommon vehicle? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:45 PM PST I was in an auto accident recently (determined to be the other party's fault) and just found out that the insurance company has determined my vehicle to be a total loss. I am waiting on the adjuster to call me back to discuss their offer. I am trying to figure out how they will determine a fair market value for my car. There were less than 4000 of my vehicle sold in the US for my model year. I have searched edmunds, ebay, autotrader, cargurus, autoblog, and such and do not find another for sale in a 200 mile radius. The nearest I find is one for sale about 600 miles away, but it does not have all the options mine had. 600 miles away does not seem like the local market value that the price should be based on. I have looked for similar model year cars that have the same features and options mine had, but those cars have a sale price 3 to 4 times what KBB, Edmunds or NADA price guides show for my vehicle. Any thoughts or advice on what to expect for valuation? [link] [comments] |
Does Autosource operate independently from the insurance company? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 07:02 PM PST I 'm trying to understand how Audatex Autosource is used by insurance adjusters. Does insurance send the loss vehicle info to Autosource (the company), then Autosource does their magic, and then transmit the valuation report back to the loss adjuster? (Scenario A). Or, do adjusters have the Autosource platform online on their computer screen to run the reports at their command (Scenario B)? I'm trying to understand how Autosource is an independent valuer. I'm thinking that Scenario A will require a huge call center operation at Autosource to deal with the calls of adjusters trying to verify/modify the valuation report. [link] [comments] |
Medicaid -> BCBS PPO + Timely Filing Posted: 07 Feb 2018 06:29 PM PST I signed up for benefits at my new job at the last possible day. Received my card in November. However, I guess coverage was retroactive since I was eligible almost right away. The problem is I have had about 40k of hospital bills billed to Medicaid in September and October. I randomly checked my old claims and one from September was recently denied and the claim code stated that it was denied because BCBS should have been the primary insurance... I contacted the hospital and they said they will be resubmitting the claims to BCBS The policy states "Claims must be filed with Blue Cross and Blue Shield on or before December 31st of the calendar year following the year in which the services were rendered." I think that means I have until December 2018 to file claims from 2017 correct? So I should be okay? Or will I somehow end up oweing 40k :\ [link] [comments] |
AAA vs Safeco. Opinions welcome Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:41 PM PST First time posting here. Can anyone give opinions on the two? The wife and I purchased a used 2016 Ford Focus (35k miles) because her previous car was totaled. My parents have had Safeco for years and always seemed good. Just looking for opinion vs the two. If this isn't allowed to be asked here can anyone guide me where to ask. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
is this possible and legal?(NY) Posted: 07 Feb 2018 06:26 PM PST So Im trying to get a new car and not chulk up 600 a month on just car insurance. My stepdad has insurance but he has some weird company and they want 3600 for a six month policy for the STATE MINIMUM!!!!!!! while geico is offering me a pretty decent coverage (50/100, 50k property, 50 uninsured motorist, and 1k collision with no glass deductible ) for 3000. Car being tried to insure is a 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. so my question is, could my stepdad open another policy on another company just for my car and not his car, add me as a driver, and still keep his other policy with the other company and with his car? I have a feeling its illegal but well im not an expert.... I'm 20 year old [link] [comments] |
Medi-Cal, Covered CA, temporary job Posted: 07 Feb 2018 04:51 PM PST I've had Medi-Cal for the past eight months. I recently started a new job that pays me $2,400/month. However, it's a temporary job that will only last five months total. I tried to ask the county worker whether they would multiply my monthly income by 12 or by 5 to get my estimated 2018 income. He said I would have to submit my proof of income change and then it would be evaluated. He refused to answer hypothetically. I can't risk losing my health insurance for any period of time due to multiple serious health conditions (it would only take 1-2 months without any healthcare for me to die). If someone can please enlighten me here, I'd really appreciate it. [link] [comments] |
Will a speeding ticket in California increase my Nevada insurance rate? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:35 PM PST I got a speeding ticket (80 in 65 zone) in California, but I have a Nevada license/ am a Nevada resident. From my research, it seems that I won't get a hit on my Nevada License points, but I don't know if paying the ticket will nevertheless impact my insurance rate. If I pay the ticket with traffic school, the citation states that it will be kept confidential, so I'm considering that option in case the hit on my rate will be substantial. Any thoughts? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 04:07 PM PST Hey Reddit — I am starting a new job in a few weeks and my husband and I were comparing insurance plans and wanted some advice! What we have currently covers my husband, son, and myself. The same would apply for the plan being offered me as well. CURRENT PLAN: Premium: ~93/week Deductible: $300/person, $900/family $20 copay for primary care office visits, 20% coinsurance for every other service listed in the pamphlet. PLAN BEING OFFERED: Premium: ~70/week Deductible: $2500/person, $5000/family No copays listed, all just 20% coinsurance My employed would provide $1200/year into a HSA under this plan We would also receive a ~$1900/year premium reduction for being non-tobacco users. We are leaning towards staying on our current plan under my husband, as it seems the low deductible is a great benefit and we would ultimately save in the long run. If I need to provide any more specific info I am happy to! Thanks to you, Insurance experts of Reddit! [link] [comments] |
Change of underwriters, now I am being billed for old policy? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:19 PM PST My agency is xyz, I have had insurance with them for 2 years. His subject line shows GL Audit. My agent wrote me an email saying that they 'recently changed underwriters' and that the new underwriter realized they never endorsed last years policy or this years policy, they sent me a new invoice for last years policy endorsement and this years. I have already paid my down for this years policy and it is in effect. Why am I being double billed. [link] [comments] |
Got rear-ended, minimal information on the other driver. Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:26 AM PST Got rear-ended, pulled over to the side, the woman was very apologetic and offered her insurance card herself. Gave me her AAA card, and I didn't think much, they do offer insurance services. Spoke to them today, they have no information regarding insurance on her file, and didn't have her phone number. Do I have any other options at all? [link] [comments] |
Issue with 'Guaranteed Replacement Cost' homeowners coverage. Posted: 07 Feb 2018 11:18 AM PST I'm currently quoting my homeowners insurance coverage with several carriers. In each quoting situation the dwelling coverage amount is coming back roughly the same (around $300k). One carrier is quite a bit lower ($240k) but states it offers 'Guaranteed Replacement Cost' coverage. My current agent says that you can either have replacement cost or actual cash value coverage. What is the difference between replacement cost coverage and 'guaranteed replacement cost' coverage. Why shouldn't I take the lower limit/price since I'm still getting replacement if my home burns to the ground? If it is guaranteed replacement cost, shouldn't I set the limit as low as possible to experience the premiums savings without sacrificing coverage? [link] [comments] |
Insurance forcing me to be principal driver after N.A.F crash? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:11 PM PST Hi there, this is my first post here but I was recommended by a friend to come here for advice. Some background info, I'm 18 years old and currently insured as an occasionally driver on my moms Toyota Camry with In-tact Insurance in Ontario, Canada. Recently, I brought it to school and got into an accident where a car hit mine, and the insurance agent stated that I was at 0% fault. I had received an email recently from the agent who claims that the company advises that I should be put as the principal driver on my moms Camry, even though the ownership of the car is under my mother. They claim this is due to two incidents, one was a theft occurred in the car, where the car was at home and someone broke into it to steal my laptop and other things (I was not under the car insurance at this time, nor was I driving the car), and the recent incident which I was not at fault for. The insurance rates in my neighborhood are very high, and the agents quotes that until my renewal (which they supposedly tried to have this change moved up to, but the insurance company denied it), my families insurance rates would have to go up nearly 1000 dollars a month, or I'd have to be taken off the car insurance. Any advice would help, I'm not sure what to do in this situation. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Is it worth it to pay for repairs of neighbors car I hit? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 02:08 PM PST I rear ended my neighbor parking. I don't know how much the damage is but let's say they need to replace the entire rear bumper. Does it make sense to pay for the repairs myself? The accident was reported to my insurance company so would my rate go up even if they don't pay? The agent on the phone said I could also reimburse the insurance company for whatever they pay for my neighbors repairs and rental and they will mark it as no payout or something for the accident. He couldn't answer if my rates would still go up or not though cause he was on the "claims side" of things. The last at fault accident I had was like 8 years ago and I really don't want my rate to go up for years. It's high enough as it is. I did have two not at fault accident in the past year though. One was hit and run and the other was my co-worker. I'm in MA btw if that makes a difference. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Feb 2018 12:40 PM PST I was hit today as I was driving past a lane across from the exit in a parking lot. Here is a diagram of the incident. I was hit by the other driver on my front wheel well, when I was 2/3rds of the way through the intersection and suffered some costly damages to the tire and body. This fact, along with my only having liability insurance, means I am hoping the other driver is found to be at fault. It seems to me that it is her fault, but that could just be my obvious bias. Posted: 07 Feb 2018 11:48 AM PST Hello, I am a visitor to the US, staying in Houston, TX. I'm 20, filing for F1 status and I plan on seeing a doctor frequently and do some scans/bloodwork. Would I qualify to any insurance plan that would help me save up a bit? [link] [comments] |
My car got wrecked by someone so randomly, and I ended up being responsible for $22,000. Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:55 AM PST Hi, I need help from anyone, any advice would be appreciated. Situation: My car was parked in a one way street, and I was sleeping in my room. It was around 5:30am, and I noticed outside that my car was crashed by another car. He was 21 years old dude, and his dad came to the situation and we reported to the police. Long story short, he acknowledged 100% that he did make a scene. He reported that he fell asleep, and he got a report for reckless driving. My car was towed couple times to arrive at the mechanic shop that the insurance company (both of us are progressive) suggested, and the car was declared to be totaled. Well, then I faced with insurance companies and I realized that It was my fault that I didn't have full insurance coverage for a lease car. I have been using the minimum insurance coverage, and the other guy had the same insurance with the same company (progressive). Since this situation is considered "property damage," the other insurance company would only cover up to $5000, and I had to sign the form to agree not to compensate and sue against their client. If I agreed to total the car, I had to pay to the dealershop one time check for $24,000. WHO has that kind of money? So I found different mechanic and he re-estimated the car, and he said he could repair it by $16000. As long as the car is repaired perfectly with the right parts, I can turn back my car in. I decided to repair it, but then insurance would pay any $0 compensation for this claim because their shop declared the car to be totaled, and they will compensate as long as they totaled the car and sign the form mentioned above. Now I have couple options left. I get to sign the form, take $5000, and pay $19000 back to dealershop and total the car. Or I do not claim any money, repair it $16,000 and bring it back to the dealershop. Obviously I'm still paying for my insurance and a car lease. I can't claim any single money unless it would cost me more. What a situation? I figured that if I had full coverage, I should be able to fix it with low cost and not deal with it. Even if this was not a lease car, I would have been ended up fixing it myself with that type of insurance policy. I have been talking with lawyers, everyone tends to think that this is easy case, but they worried if cost for lawyers would cost more than what we could actually get compensated for the damage. I have never seen any lawyer says that they could0 help us. They suggested me to sue myself and it is the only way I was not careful reading the entire contract, and I realized that people seemed to know that any lease car would require full coverage as a common sense. I found out from this accident because I brought my insurance policy before the dealershop cleared all my requirements to drive off. Can anyone help or give any advice? I've been very stress about this, and really has no option but to repair it myself. I do not have that kind of money. [link] [comments] |
Property Claims Manager...Manager? Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:33 AM PST Hi all! I'm doing some quick research and needing to know who would be managing the Claims Managers? Specifically, I'm looking for the job title of the type of person who may be helping fine-tune their tools (I understand Xactimate/XactAnalysis are common standards in the US) to meet their needs. Stuff like turning on or off certain fields in the program, forms that must be filled out, that type of thing. Thanks for any help and direction you may be able to provide! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:29 AM PST History: 25 year old woman in good health, located in NYC. Previously, I was on my dad's insurance: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (Blue Edge PPO). We paid for everything until meeting the $5K deductible. We only met it only once, when my dad had surgery. Now, I'm considering Cigna's Open Access Plus HSA Plan with an in-network deductible of $2K and 100% coverage after. The monthly payment is $77/month. Main medical expense: Monthly mental health appointment.Through BCBS Blue Edge PPO, my medication cost about $35-40/month out of pocket. I've seen my doctor for the past year and find our check-ins helpful. I would like to stay with him (he also accepts Cigna HSA), but have reservations based on my lack of knowledge regarding his fee. I'm also shaking my head at my obliviousness here... I'm trying to learn now. After each appointment, I was always told I was "all set" regarding payment. I received bills from his office addressed to me maybe twice this past year, totaling about $70 which I paid directly. However, I just found out that BCBS sent the bills to my dad, as he was the policy holder. That's why I never received those letters. I only briefly scanned one bill, but it looks like my doctor had at least once charged BCBS $1200 for "physical history" among other smaller expenses, which for some reason BCBS covered completely--and I believe that occurred before we had met the deductible. Neither my dad nor I paid anything out of pocket beyond the $70 I paid this past year. Cost with new plan/questions: With Cigna's HSA plan, I would have to meet the $2K deductible before full coverage for the appointments. I'm not concerned about the copay for the medication. Over the course of a year, do you think it's likely that I would meet the deductible on the appointments alone? That's pretty steep for me. Besides this, I haven't gone to the doc for anything beyond routine exams. The only reference I have regarding fees paying out of pocket in my area is about $150 for an 5-min urgent care visit (doc told me to slap some Neosporin on my cut) and about $90 for an appointment with a PCP about a sore throat/fever. Both in-network. If I had to switch doctors to save $$, I would be open to it. The other options I have for insurance: - Cigna Open Access Plus EPO Base Plan, $77/month with $1K deductible. I would only pay a $24-40 copay for my appointments with no deductible. Still, I'm heavily leaning against EPO because it only covers 30% of all hospital surgeries/ER, even after meeting the deductible, with the exception of urgent care (only $40 copay). - Cigna Open Access Plus POS Buy Up Plan, $234/month with $500 deductible. Same cost for my appointments. For hospital surgeries, $250-500 admission, with 10% coinsurance after and no deductible. $40-100 copay for ER/urgent care. I don't want to take this plan because it would be tight paying $234+/month AND it sounds like they don't cover much for hospital/ER services anyways. - Our company also offers Aflac Accident/Cancer coverage for less than $50/month, but I don't think this applies to my situation. *****TL;DR*********** My mentality is that I'll self-insure for relatively smaller expenses, but utilize insurance in "disaster" situations when hospital bills run several thousand dollars & more. That's why I'm leaning towards the HSA plan with a $2K deductible for all services & full coverage after, rather than the options of smaller deductibles & only partial coverage after. I'm in good health. However, since I do have monthly mental health consultations, it looks like I'd have to meet $2K before coverage kicks in with HSA. The other options would only cost $25-40 copay. I suppose I could do that without going completely broke, but I'd like to avoid it if at all possible. Thank you so much, everyone!! Actually kind of interesting trying to understand insurance more fully for the first time. [link] [comments] |
