    Not 100% if I should create an LLC

    I have a friend that works for a fairly large IT company for the city and he has a lot of close connections to friends/clients that he's formed over the years and they know him as the "guy with the crazy custom pc", and from time to time he'll get requests from clients, or friends of clients that ask him if he can build them one as well. And that's where I come in, he gives me the details and I build and deliver them for him because his work schedule is too packed to do it himself; we charge a small percentage and then split that(majority of it goes to me). I've recently passed the 20th order and I'm planning on making it into a legitimate business. I've never had an issue or a problem with any of it, so I figure why not, I'm good at it and I enjoy it. My friend said he doesn't mind, since the amount he makes at his actual job is more than enough for him.

     

    I know this is a high risk business because of the high price of the computers themselves, and things going wrong such as some components not working and having to RMA it. Which would make some people impatient and cause them to cancel their order. I make 100% sure I do everything perfectly, but it could have just been luck that none of the 21 clients so far have asked for a refund or complained. -The customer orders what type of pc they want from the list I provide, and once they make the payment, I use that to build it. I've never had to use any of my personal money to cover the costs or buy the parts myself.

     

    I plan on using incfile which would be $49 and they offer a registered agent as well, which I think would be needed with something of this magnitude so I don't get personally targeted in case something does goes wrong. And then getting an EIN to open up a capital one spark business account most likely, because of the perks. Not sure if I'm missing a step, but that seems like all I'd need for now. It's worth it to have an LLC for something like this, right?

    Wife wants to start a creative business, I am asking her to create a business plan with me, I need advice.

    History: I used to be a partner in a small IT company 8~ years ago, so I know that there's a lot of stuff involved that's beyond creating and selling a product. My wife has attempted a few ventures in past and is not a real "people person" that can do direct sales and I want to get on paper her plan to get customers beyond simply having a product or an Etsy store, product costs, expected profit margins and so on. She's very excited about a couple types of paper product she can produce and is asking for about $800 in start up supplies (with a couple hundred in rebates on the printer she's looking at). I trust her with the creative side and deciding how and what she creates.

    1. Is there a no/low cost bookkeeping solution for running this type of home business? I used Quickbooks as a business owner, so we could go that route, but that's another decent expense I want to minimize.

    2. She already has her business name registered as an LLC, do we need to open "business" bank accounts or can we run it out of our personal accounts as long as anything business related is tracked in the bookkeeping software? If a separate bank account is needed, should we put our investment into it and buy our supplies out of that account?

    3. She's agreed to sit down with me a couple nights this week and put together the business plan. She's wanting to do a 1 and 5 year plan. I want to include expected up front cost (I'm thinking that $800~ figure I mentioned earlier), what items she plans to create to start with, her expected cost per item sold, estimated labor-hours spent per item, expected retail price & profit margin, payment plan to get our initial investment back in our personal savings, and an up front decision on how much if any we're willing to invest additionally, and what schedule she's going to keep on when she plans to work. (She's a stay at home mom with both kids too young for school, so her time is already at a premium. I work 40 + hours with 6~ 24 hour on-call days a month, but I'm willing to help with the "business side" of things.) Additionally, how she plans to get customers, I am assuming social media is going to be what she's most comfortable with to start with. Is there anything I'm overlooking that we need to discuss or get on paper before we dive in?

    Best resource to rescue website...

    Hi r/smallbusiness, I engaged a company over a year ago to assist me in developing an attractive yet functional website for my small beekeeping business. A year later and $8k, I basically have a premium wordpress template with a handful of premium plugins and truly nothing to show for the cash. To be perfectly honest, the failure was 99% my fault, this company was basically acting as a project management firm and development house that was almost 100% dependent on my input and provision. They made almost no decision or directional move without my input. This would have been fine if I would have had the extra time to also manage this company but like several other small businesses, I have a day job that is very busy as well as being a Dad and a small business owner. My wife runs our operation day to day but I'm responsible for the marketing and growth, the website was mine to get operational.

    I have some capital left to complete this thing and am looking for what others have used in the past and were satisfied with the outcome. I need to have a platform to showcase new products, add "blog" style updates and ultimately sell my products on.

    Any insight or advice would be beyond appreciated!

    Looking for tips on how to become a distributor

    Hi SB,

    I posted last week about a business opportunity I was thinking about (link here) and got a lot of great replies.

    After reading through the advice, I decided the best step forward was to become a distributor for this brand. Only problem is I have no idea what it's like to be a distributor but I'm keen on learning.

    Are there any links/sources/literature you could direct me to in order to get started?

    Setting up a lease for the Model 3

    Tesla doesn't offer leasing for the Model 3. Their partner in Texas offers leasing on the Model 3 for businesses only. Can I set a lease up using my company's tax ID and pay w personal funds? After all, the car will be used mainly for commuting and not for working.

    7 Signs An Employees Should Be Fired

    We can all spot terrible employees: they under-perform, they don't work well with teams, they struggle to meet expectations... but oddly enough, it isn't the obviously terrible employees who cause the real problems. It's awful to fire people. It's the most difficult thing most managers will ever have to do. Because it's so hard knowing that you're going to be affecting someone's life in such a profound way. One of your duties as a manager or business owner is not to just handle tough employees, but also to let them go when justified. While handing a pink slip to an employee is never a pleasant task, it's a necessity if you want to have a thriving business. Here are 7 signs why an employee should be fired.

    1. Stirs the pot: This individual can do some serious damage to your workplace if left unattended, and we think you know what type of person we're talking about. They spread rumours, pit colleagues against each other and incite mutiny by undermining management or bad-mouthing a supervisor. If you have an employee who won't embrace company initiatives, quibbles about project requirements and gets a kick out of causing trouble, then it's probably time for you to part ways.

    2. Arguments: Argumentative employees usually take two forms: those employees who feel strongly about their positions and those who have grown weary of their environment and wish to argue for the simple act of releasing aggression. If the former, congratulations, you have a passionate employee! If the latter, you have someone on your team who has reached the point where a blowup is imminent. When the latter begins frequently arguing with you, other management, fellow employees, or clients, it's a very good sign that it's time for that employee to go. If you're kindhearted, you could (and probably should) bring the employee in for a conference to see if any issues can be resolved. Otherwise, it's "Hit the road."

    3. Productivity decline: Production loss can come for many reasons. Sometimes staff can become overloaded with work or be placed on a project they have no business on because they lack the skill set. Other times, a drop in production can come for no apparent reason. It's when this type of slowdown occurs that attention must be paid to the culprit. If the employee in question seems to be spending more time with his eyes in places other than their work, or their work requires several revisions, they're constantly asking co-workers for assistance, or their taking-up too much of your time, then it's time to bring that employee in for a chat. When that happens, the employee will either deny your claims or make excuses for his (in)action.

    4. Hurry to grab the credit: OK, maybe he did do nearly all the work. Maybe he did overcome almost every obstacle. Maybe, without him, that high-performance team would have been anything but.

    But probably not. Nothing important is ever accomplished alone, even if some people love to act like it.

    A good employee and good team player shares the glory. A good employee credits others and lets others shine. That's especially true for an employee in a leadership position -- he celebrates the accomplishments of others secure in the knowledge that their success reflects well on him, too.

    Saying "I did all the work" or "It was all my idea" is like saying "The world revolves around me, and I need everyone to know it." And even if other people don't adopt the same philosophy, they resent having to fight for recognition that is rightfully theirs.

    5. Can't handle change: Change is inevitable, especially in a fast-moving company. Employees need to be comfortable with change and eager to improve company's abilities. They need to keep our skills growing at pace with the company.

    This can actually be tough when you have a hard-working employee who is responsible and fits the culture of your company. Unfortunately, if they can no longer perform at a high level because the pace is too fast for them, then, unfortunately, it's time to move-on to someday who can.

    6. That's not my job: The smaller the company, the more important it is that employees think on their feet, adapt quickly to shifting priorities and do whatever it takes, regardless of role or position, to get things done.

    Even if that means a manager has to help load a truck or a machinist needs to clean up a solvent spill, or the accounting staff needs to hit the shop floor to help complete a rush order, or a CEO needs to man a customer service line during a product crisis.

    Any task an employee is asked to do - as long as it isn't unethical, immoral, or illegal -- is a task that employee should be willing to do, even if it's "below" his or her current position. Great employees notice problems and jump in without being asked.

    Saying "It's not my job," says "I care only about me." That attitude destroys overall performance because it quickly turns what might have been a cohesive team into a dysfunctional group of individuals.

    7. They're not trying to improve: Let's say that you have an employee who is tardy or afraid of public speaking. Instead of making an effort to arrive at the workplace earlier or start taking public speaking classes, the employee doesn't make any sort of effort to rectify their mistakes or better themselves then it's probably in your best interest to give the employee the axe.

    In over my head with taxes

    I started a 3 partner LLC with my friends back in January of 2017. It's time to file taxes and I'm totally clueless on where to start. It's my understanding that I need to fill out a 1065 and submit it before I can file any returns.

    Is the turbotax business edition the most affordable method? Does the business edition also allow me to do my personal returns? Should I just bite the bullet and see a CPA? I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible because the business doesn't have any money and everything is coming out of pocket right now. please help! thank you!

    Handing off Business Phone

    So I run most of my business from my phone...lots of receiving texts and photos of orders from clients and sending them over to the appropriate workers. Everyone reaches out with problems and work at whatever time makes sense for them between 7a and 11p.

    I'm at the point where I'd like to be able to essentially hand the phone to an assistant dispatcher but not finding a great way to do that digitally. I use an iPhone and Mac computers (texting handoff is great) and have played w/ google voice as an option but the texting is still pretty clunky for mms which we do a lot of and I'd prefer not to use it personally when I'm on dispatch.

    Anyone have any good recommendations?

    Billing Question for Small Business

    Hey Reddit Community. I do consulting work for an executive search firm. Because of the tax plan, I am going to create a LLC and file corporate taxes this year to save money and grow my business.

    My parent company pays me as an independent contractor. They have, until this point, paid out to my name. Do I need them to pay out to my company for tax purposes come next April or is it only important that I deposit the checks in a separate business account?

    When is the best time to open a business that is most profitable in a particular season?

    I'm not talking about something like an ice cream shop that might as well be closed in the winter but a business that is much busier when it's warm than the rest of the year. Is it best to open right at the beginning of peak season maybe right before it so you can get settled a little it does it not matter at all?

    Hiring Off Site Admin. Best way to test typing speed and other skills without being in person?

    I want to add this to the interview, but I can't find a site that I can say, email an offsite person during the interview, have them take a typing test, and then quickly email/message me the results. It would great if I could also test some other skills like Excel, Word, etc. There are a million sites that offer typing tests, but none who allow easily communicable results. I could hypothetically ask the person to show me a screenshot of the results, but email would be easier.

    Anyone know of any sites designed for this? Preferably not something I have to pay for?

    I found this, this, and this. The first two are free but don't really give you a great way of transmitting the test results. The third is pay.

    DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FBO.GOV AND SAP.

    along the lines of registering my business with sam.gov after paying 600 dollars they now tell me i have to pay another $3k for SAP. They said i will get contracts guaranteed and have that paid off after receiving my first contract. Can i just get contracts from fro.gov for free. Or is it a better option to pay the money and use their program?

    The potential scams (Prodeum, OneCoin, Confido) and ICO's there that are poorly ran can give the participants of this technology and the general public a bad taste, which in turn hurts the development and the developers invested in this field. As an ethereum dApp, we are aiming to initialize a pre-alpha test in the next month to produce a "decentralised marketplace verification layer model".

    We intend to start by allowing users to annotate white papers for public information, in addition to posting information pertaining to their views of the issue.     Delivery Driver App suggestions

    I am looking to launch an on demand laundry and dry cleaning service, i am making the site and app as we speak.

    I would like to add an Uber type feature which shows customers how far the driver is from them when they come to collect and deliver. Therefore, the drivers will also need a special app that connects to the original app. I wanted to ask you guys, what kind of features should the driver app have?

    At the moment, I would add a seperate itineraries for collections and deliveries or maybe merge these but make it is easy to distinguish in the app so that the driver knows whether its a collection or delivery that they are making.

    I want to add some sort of barcode feature but I think it would only work when the driver deliveries, so when they first collect the items, they will bring it back to the cleaning unit, then we will add our own barcode to the customers entire order generated from the system and this barcode will stay with the order right before completion, the driver will scan this barcode from the driver app to acknowledge that this order is delivered and therefore complete which would prompt automatic payment from the customers account.

    I would also have some sort of map feature but I wonder, is it easy to add Waze or Google maps to this app or would you have to create your own map technology and then add this to the app? Within this map it will show the driver his/her itinerary and as deliveries/collections are complete they will be erased from the itinerary but a record will be kept to show the driver all the times they have picked up and dropped off.

    At the moment this is all I can think of but I want to know if there is anything else I am missing. What else would a driver app need to collect and deliver laundry? Thanks in advance for any insight!

    Market Stall

    I would like to open a second hand book stall at my local market. After looking around I saw that there were four open pitches of different sizes and locations (I was thinking of a mid sized pitch close to the centre) and found that there was no one selling books at all - the closest to it was a stationary stall which, from prior experience as a shopper, seems to do quite well.

    The city is sprawling and the market is situated in a spot where there are no bookshops, meaning that competition would be light in that area.

    After looking online, specifically Ebay, it looks as though I could get a diverse and sizeable inventory with a budget of around £100 - everything from crime and thriller to vintage science fiction and fantasy.

    However, before going forward, I could do with some advice and ideas for an initial business plan. As I am very new to all this I feel that it would be best to ask people such as yourselves for any tips and whatnot so I can make a success of it (Success being: Making it viable and making sure that if any mistakes do occur it is not the customer or, indeed, the other stallholders who suffer for them).
