Anyone sell propane? Sales and Selling

    Anyone sell propane?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 06:27 AM PST

Not a joke lol. Does anyone sell it and have insight into what it is like? I have a job opportunity to sell it for a major gas company. Perks seem good but I'm wanting the inside scoop. Should I stay away or go for it?

    Hooking up with clients?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 06:48 AM PST

I was just on a meeting with a woman, she is extremely attractive. I would never do anything myself but if the opportunity presented itself it would be hard to say no.

Has anyone here ever hooked up with clients/ prospects?

Or have good stories to share as to why we should not?

How do you learn about your product as an SDR that serves multiple industries?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:33 AM PST

Just to preface, I work in a programming/software company that works with clients in many different industries. Basically, we sell a programming language and then add-ons to the software. Slowly transitioning from our IT Department to Sales.

About a month and a half into my (first) SDR role and I am struggling to find a proper way to really learn about our product. Many of the Sales book that I've read tells me that I should be able to educate the lead and not just be some transactional call.

I could see this working for Sales Rep who work with specific industries all the time. We also have like 80+ products on top of that. But as a SDR, I have to call up leads that could be in the Aerospace industry or Wireless Comms Industry. If I can get a conversation going with the lead, I have no clue what they are talking about most of the time. You could say I am pretty much a glorified note taker.

Spoke with top performers on the team, see how they do it. They just told me they sucked for a couple of months and after doing enough calls, you start to know what the leads talking about. Curious to see if there is a more actionable route than just waiting for everything to click.

TL:DR Company serves multiple industry and sells 80+ products. Want to find an efficient way to learn about products or find a way to provide insight to leads.

    New sales role, need advice

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:03 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm going to be transitioning from an inside B2B sales role to an outside sales role for the same company, in the SMB space.

What advice would you give someone for their first 30-90 days to set themselves up for success?

What mistakes have you made in an outside role that hindered your success?

    Thanks in advance guys

Sales falling through because we write prospects and clients take it to the competitor. How to protect our prospects from landing in the wrong hands?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 08:24 AM PST

I'm from the audit division in a mid-sized company. We are known as the best at what we do.

However, the sales team seems to have an issue. After they meet, sales write the agreement and their expert consultation, the client takes all of the assessments and shows it to the competitor.

We at audit have noticed that this is eating up their efforts. We have proposed hosting the files on our own servers and (maybe) have a log in for each client to see the files. We also proposed putting read-only and ScreenShieldKit (anti-screen shot) tech on the files.

What tech or methods do you guys use to keep your prospects safe? Have any of you tried these methods?

For those of you on the job hunt - a few tips that I've found useful for me

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:58 AM PST

    • List as many as possible, in your resume - quarters you exceeded goal, new accounts broken, $ of revenue driven, YOY increases, etc. We have clients that won't even talk to candidates unless these types of details are included in their resume. Lots of people can get meetings, create decks, strategize. Companies want proven closers (coffee not always included).

    • Be prepared to answers questions on HOW you were able to do above. I've seen cases where sellers lie about their numbers (sadly, it happens and a quick back channel will help uncover this). Once companies start to dig into details above, they can quickly identify the A vs B and C players in space.

    • Treat the interview process like a sales deal. Provide value, do your research, send follow up after EVERY meeting, ask closing questions at every meeting, find out if there are any objections, etc. I have harped on this multiple times but am still amazed at sellers who primarily try to coax through interviews on his/her personality.

(written by a recruiter that has helped me tremendously. I hope this helps some of you)

Recommendation for finding a sales person/partner in different countries/states.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:54 AM PST

Hey everyone, would love to get some advice on how to work with sales people from another state / country, basically an online based relationship.

We create ready to go websites catered to different niches eg. restaurant, beauty clinics, law firms, auto shops etc. We also create custom websites although I believe it will be more profitable to use the ready to go sites to expand in country first (easier for the sales person to communicate and close the sale).

Since there are no way to monitor how the sales person is doing his/her part we want to stay with a commission based wage. Our products start at $1000 usd. What would be a fair and attraction commission rate for you?

We will also be providing business cards and any marketing material that may be useful for the sales person.

Our designs are top tier, industry level. A custom site of the same caliber would be 3x the price or more.

It's is our hope to work with quality sales people across the country to provide businesses with quality websites at a reasonable price.

I was thinking to allow one sales person to handle an area or business niche in his/her location. They can also choose to train and help other sales people and splitting the commission. We are open to ideas that would be beneficial mutually.

Sorry for the long post, I'll list out some of the questions for those who don't want to read:

    • Where is a good place to find sales people to work with remotely? (Online)
    • What is a commission based compensation that you would be interested in for a $1000+ per sale product.
    • What kind of marketing material would be helpful for making sales when working remotely with a company.

Any feedback would be helpful, thank you!

BMW Sales to B2B Security video monitoring sales

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 11:52 AM PST

So I need some advice! I am making this transition currently and hopefully someone can help with how to make it a successful switch.

Currently I am very successful at the dealership with fresh ups (walk up lot traffic). I've developed great listening skills, objection handling, a personality that people want to be around, and understand my product completely. I know these will be transferrable but don't know what I need to develop to really start off strong.

Ultimately I want to change jobs for a better schedule in the long term. Car sales requires some insane hours and you have to be there weekends if you want to make money. And I know a future role in F&I can make 150-200k pretty easy here but again the hours are horrendous. The job I am stepping into involves selling video monitoring that replaces security guards for businesses or cities that currently use them. They are offering a generous base pay plus guaranteed commission for 6 months.

Any advice, articles, posts or books are greatly appreciated!

    Terminated For Revenue Reduction

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 09:26 AM PST

    Hey guys,

The last remaining veteran sales guys (myself and my coworker) were terminated yesterday for the same reason "company revenue is dropping and we are a part of the cut" We just hired two new sales guys, who haven't brought any business in yet and probably won't for some time.

Long story short, there have been many changes recently in management and our sales team. We have been "professionally vocal" about our disagreements the past year or so and they were probably looking for a reason to get us out (They also terminated my director of sales/marketing a few months ago as well).

I was just paid a bonus for hitting my revenue target on Friday and I am the top sales guy there. The next Monday I was terminated for the reason above. They offered me no severance and many of my commissions are from on-going assignments and paid out as we collect from clients. Is there any grounds for a wrongful termination here? Their reasoning for my termination doesn't make sense.

How to tell someone they've taken your prospect?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 07:53 AM PST

Hey! So I've worked at the same company for about 4 years now. We have a CRM that's pretty shitty at tracking duplicates/related companies, too. Today, I had a follow up call for a previous client I had originally brought on whenevrr I first started, but I noticed the DBA sounded really familiar. Checking to make sure I wasnt double-calling the company from another record, I came across my coworker double-calling from the DBA name. I checked the notes, and it was originally assigned to her AFTER I had scheduled the meeting, by my boss (who went on the meeting as well). She even explained to her in the notes that they were a previous client. My boss can be a bit spacey sometimes. Im willing to give her the benefit of the doubt that she just didnt see my prospect notes. I was bummed because my coworker had recently scheduled another meeting with the same lady I originally spoke with. Its not like its a huge company, but how do I tell her & my boss nicely that they took my lead and to kindly give it back?

I sell "online strategy". Can I get a critique on my cold e-mail?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 07:35 AM PST

Here it is (lets say I'm targeting contractors):

Subject: Thought you may be interested

    Hi Jerry,

Figured I'd reach out, as I just finished working with another electric contractor in the area.

So, I helped out Bob's Electric, as they were frustrated with how difficult it was to get new business in the door. I put together an online strategy for them, we executed it, and now they're getting about 10 new inquiries per week.

Roughly 40% of those they're closing as new customers. Just seeing if that's something you'd be interested in learning more about.

How would you feel about discussing further?

    Cheers, JD

PS - love the blog post on how to find a great electrician. Very insightful!

I sell "online strategy" - in other words, inbound SEO, web design + development, facebook / instagram ads. All depends on what they need.

    Would love a critique!

First 30-60-90 as a Sales Manager

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 08:16 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I'm applying to the Sales Manager position at Xerox and was asked to provide a detailed 30-60-90 days plan tackling such problems as taking over the team of peers (we have two teams and I'll be taking over a different team), what would be my hiring procedures and any measures to prevent high turnover.

Overall I think i should concentrate on overall employee engagement and helping them to hit the KPIs everyday.

What would be great things to say in terms of hiring and retaining people, cause I know the position, but i'm not sure what would be a great process to hire people, as I've never hired anyone.

    Cheers and good selling!

Just started at an insurance company (L&H, P&C) and I have been debating between quote wizard and sales genie. I would love to hear feedback on either or take any recommendations of other services.

    Thanks in advance

You see a position open for a company you want to work for, what is the smart thing to do assuming the company is well renowned?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 04:59 PM PST

If you apply for it, then your resume will be one among many in a pile and is in danger of being thrown in the trash.

I already emailed the recruiter this morning wanting to know more and set up a call, have not heard back at all.

Position has been open for 5 days.

What would be the smart thing to do now?

Avoiding getting sent to committee after initial sales call?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 12:13 AM PST

In several of my recent sales calls, I've had the person say "this sounds great to me, let me discuss with my committee and see what they say." We sell SAAS B2B to large >500 consumer products companies, so they often have a committee in our area. I've asked if I can present to the committee, but they say "no I understand it well enough."

The problem is that committees are slow, I end up not hearing back, they raise objections and I'm not there to counter, people want to show off and shoot down ideas in a group setting. I've done better in other companies where my point of contact and maybe 1 or two other people just handle the product sale. In each case, the point of contact has been very positive, I just think they want some cover by discussing it with a few people so it's not just one person's responsibility. How can I avoid these committees?

Can I: 1)insist on presenting to the committee myself? 2)counter this somehow? 3)Ask to get a smaller group involved.

Would love to hear your suggestions.

Contacting board members of foundation to sell them after attending benefit?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2018 12:07 AM PST

Hi everyone, I recently went to a benefit for a healthcare cause. The foundation's board has a bunch of major players in the industry where I sell. I would like to write these members and say how much I liked the event and also how we sell a product that helps with a disease related to the benefit. Would this be appropriate and possibly a good way to make a connection, or would they get mad that I'm marketing to them?

I think they would be interested and our product is for a good purpose as well, but I'm worried about it backfiring, having one of the board members blast my email around and get me blackballed for future sales. Is this fine or am I overthinking? Any suggestions on how to word this?

College student - 100% Commission job selling power capacitors. Should I take the job?

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 02:08 PM PST

I was offered a job as a salesman for power capacitors. The concept is pretty interesting. The man offering me the job is a guy is the dad of a boy that I give baseball lessons to, and he has grown to like me and offered me this job today. He is the CEO of the company and from the finances he showed me in the meeting, he does quite well with a lot of clients. He told me he had salesmen who made six figures and the ones at the bottom of the totem pole made at the lowest 30k a year.

I am a college student who has a good job during the summer at my university. I will work 30 hours max at this job and it is low stress. Pays well and I am good at it. However, during the summer I have LOT more free time. He is only asking me for about 15-20 hours a week, if I wanted. He is not forcing the job on me, but offering it as a token of appreciation for working with his son and that he know I come from a family business and am experienced in sales and I also work to pay my rent and tuition.

What is your advice, Reddit? I feel like I have nothing to lose. I understand the system I could be selling, and it makes a lot of sense. I am confident in my ability to find clients too. As someone who is ADHD this sounds kind of fun. I leaning in the direction of "why not. If it doesn't work out I can quit and continue getting my degree and work at the company I work for." In other words, I am not desperate and have a fallbacks.

    Thanks for the help.

Client changed their mind in the last minute!

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 02:32 PM PST

    So this is a RANT!

3 weeks ago I visited a client to show my measurement equipment and they loved it! We could measure all of their pieces and we agreed this was a 100% product for them.

I always carry a printed quote and we agreed on a 25% of discount to purchase it on february. This WAS going to make me achive 4th Q. I never give such discounts but as this is the end of our fiscal year I was willing to help them out.

Today, I receive a call where the owner of the plant requested leasing option, in my company we don't this option so this where they said NO to the purchase.

Why on earth did they request a discount on first place???

This makes me give no more discounts. Almost a perfect project damn it!!

Also, I have been requesting this leasing option for my company since time ago, but they dont fucking listen. I hope now they do
