My first business closed its first year at $165k in sales. We only used Instagram for marketing and spent less than $2500 in ads and collaborations. Here are a few things o learned.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:00 PM PST

In no particular order, here are a few things that helped contribute to a successful first year.

    INSTAGRAM RELATED...

    1. [Assuming your target audience is under 35] Live on Instagram. Don't just post though- follow people/business you truly enjoy and interact with them genuinely, as another human.

    2. Play it straight and don't buy followers or likes. The goal is to attract potential customers, obviously bots and paid followers aren't going to be buying. And it's not worth the appearance of success. As a consumer, it's easy to spot fake interaction which can damage your brand. Don't stress over the amount of followers you have (we only have 15k, but they are 100% real. Grow organically.

    3. In addition to #2, don't out kick your coverage in terms of the number of people you follow. If you don't have time to interact with your whole feed, don't follow thousands of people in hopes that they'll follow you back. Again, it will damage your brand.

    4. Collaborate with other companies with the same target market. It will help pull in real followers.

    5. The algorithm is your friend. There isn't some wizard formula to showing up in people's feeds. Be active in it and stay up on interaction, post regularly, respond to DM's, watch stories, etc. Instagram itself is a business after all, they just want you using their product. Don't take shortcuts.

    6. Use the business analytics in the app, they are solid gold for learning who your demographic is, what days/hours your followers are most active, top posts, etc.

    7. Don't be afraid to be personal. Share videos of yourself talking on your stories and using the product in your day to day life. We share photos of our kids helping pack orders, people love small businesses.

    8. Giveaways will generate many followers, but don't do them too often. My opinion is no more than 8-10 times a year.

    9. Involve them in making decisions. This was an amazing strategy we used. Ex 1: "Help us name the next product and if we use your suggestion we'll send you one for free!" Your customers might have more good ideas than you might anticipate. Ex 2: Polling two potential product options on a story. Get them invested in the development.

    10. Get in and interact in that explore feed, it's a surefire way to reach potential customers without being spammy.

GENERAL BUSINESS PRACTICES... *note these were successful for our product (luggage) and business model and will not apply to every business

    1. Free shipping or death. Build it into the price if you have to. People hate paying for shipping. Also don't skimp on the service. Be on par with Amazon if possible. We ship everything USPS Priority which is extremely fast (1-3 days across the entire US / 7-9 internationally)

    2. Have a generous return/exchange policy. The cost of losing potential sales outweighs the cost of returns/shipping cost.

    3. Out of stock is a good thing. Sure it can suck to decrease sales, but IMO it's heavily outweighed by the benefits of having a more exclusive product. On-the-fencers won't be on-the-fence anymore.

    4. Rarely do sales! They are like a drug because it's such good short term success, but you and your customers will become dependent on them, which will damage the brand and obviously the margins. If possible- treat your prices like Apple does.

AMA if you have any specific q's

    Happy New Year!

    Closing an LLC

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:57 PM PST

We've basically always been self employed, but tried to be real adults about it a few years ago. However, we live in NJ, so it was no fun. Nothing devastating happened, we just pretty much stopped working for the LLC. I have continued to file taxes, and file sales tax records. what do I need to do to be done with this? Can I just close the bank account? Thank you.

Any whitefaced booking system for vehicle rental online..

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 04:08 PM PST

I'm looking at starting a specialist RV hire business here in the UK, I'm in an outdoor sports hotspot and the RVs I'm renting will be customised for the specific sports... It's a niche market but quite lucrative..

I'll only have 4/8 vehicles so don't want to be spending £40k on web design and a custom portal for booking.. anyone know of a package for online booking that I can integrate to a simple WordPress site...

Need to get out of dog daycare & boarding business with my dad. Help!

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 03:21 PM PST

I naively started a dog daycare and boarding business with my dad in January 2016. I own 51% and my dad 49%. I had experience with dogs prior to this, but no experience managing or running a business. My dad was supposed to handle the accounting, licensing, all the overhead parts of the business while I ran the day to day. He owns the facility our business is in.

My dad has not been easy to work with. He wasn't paying unemployment taxes to the state until I found out and payed them myself. I just found out we don't have our certificate of occupancy with the city, and we need to add a $10,000 ventilation system before we get it. He is unwilling to pay that and says he will do it himself, it's been 5 months so far and he hasn't done it. There are so many repairs that need to be done at our facility that he says he will do, but he drags it out over such a long period of time. Meanwhile I'm trying to sell this piece of crap to all our customers like they can't tell everything's falling a part. When he does finally do it, he does a terrible job that usually doesn't last. I try to do what I can and learn different things by watching youtube, but I can only do so much. I'm usually too tired to do anything after managing 50 dogs and 20 employees. He doesn't get the permits we're supposed to get before remodeling our building. He didn't get the permits for our signs before the city came after us for them. I've paid so many late fees.

I'm not getting the help I need. I'm tired - so so tired and sick of all this. I'm unhappy. I need to get out of here, but when I talk to my dad about selling he gets angry. He says I'm ungrateful and spoiled. Says at least 3 more years, but I don't know if I have it in me. What can I do?

Dissolving my CA single owner LLC after 5-months (Tax question?)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 03:53 PM PST

I wanted to try an e-commerce business idea using some side money I was able to save and made no income. Decided on pivoting and will go Sole Proprietor on my next venture (I was blind sided by that min. $800 tax fee for LLCs! Totally my fault though as I should have paused right then and there but decided to pay it) but for now, I'm currently trying to dissolve my company.

Dissolution forms just sent to SoS but now my last bit is making sure my taxes are in order. I watched the video from the FTB and it mentions writing "FINAL" at the top of form 568 (income tax form) but I was hoping it will be ok to file using Turbo Tax Business.

My question is, will I be able to mark that this is my final tax payment and that I'm dissolving my LLC somewhere in the filing process thru Turbo?

Another side question, has anyone successfully filed their taxes with the help of Turbo Tax without consulting a CPA? I wasn't able to find one in my area I could afford and will be doing this solo. Would love some encouragement that it's not that bad but oh boy am I scared. Any insight appreciated! Thanks all

Is it common (or possible) to own a small business as an investment while working full-time?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 12:53 AM PST

Pardon me if I sound ignorant on this matter, but I recently had a thought of investing in buying small businesses like coffee shops, convenience stores, dry cleaners etc... and hiring managers to run the day to day operations then check in every other day or so to take care of big picture stuff. This would be done while I continue to work full-tome and the business profits would be used as supplemental income. I was wondering, how hard is it to do so? Is the reward with it? What time committment is needed to own a small business operated by managers?

Do I need to do anything special to do business in Canada (located in FL, USA)?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:46 AM PST

    Hello,

We're an S-Corp in Florida providing services nationwide and, as of yesterday, to a business in Canada. Do we need to file any kind of paperwork with the government stating we're doing business with Canadians now? Do we have to pay any sort of taxes to Canada? Just want to make sure we do this right.

Our services are 100% online and we don't provide any physical product at all.

Dealing with Payroll and Workman's comp

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:52 PM PST

    Hey all.

I have been dealing with the shit storm which is workman's comp and payroll. Initially I thought I would DIY it and it's a nightmare. I would rather pay a bit more and have someone take care of it for me.

Missing state/federal payments and having to keep track of everything for an audit: blah!! It's not my core competency!

I want a service where it's all pay as you go. I see about 50 of them. I'm tempted to use intuit since its right there in QuickBooks but I thought I would reach out.

My situation is that I may only employ someone a single time per year and never again as I do a lot of work which varies in size (events). Initially I was turned off by the extra fee per employee when I only have them on for one day... But it's nothing... I can absorb those small costs because what I'm realizing is the real cost is me losing days and days of my life dealing with that. If I even value my time at only minimum wage (and I don't) I still would come out ahead if I just paid the extra fees.

Ideally I don't want the base fee to be more than $100/month unless there is something super compelling since $100/mo is what intuit charges and they do exactly what I'm talking about.

Tips... Please anyone who is actively using one these systems let me know the good and bad.

    Thanks,

    Mark

New player to the game! Please help!

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:43 PM PST

I'm still in high school and decided to start up my first business. It's been almost three months and not gonna lie, I've felt really helpless doing everything.

I've been trying to learn how to use photoshop to make my site more appealing to the human eye. I've been learning the insides and outs of every part of my site so I can keep it integrated. (I also attached a plugin to make it more visually attractive [brooklyn theme] but for some reason, it's only made things harder in terms of setting everything up.)

I feel like I've been doing everything wrong--creating the products, setting up the website, and designing all the images to attract customers. I feel so lost and I feel like I've been learning and doing everything wrong. Has anyone had the same experience and if so, could I get some help on how to overcome these problems?

Want to run a promotion for online reviews; how do I verify?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:18 PM PST

New contracting company, willing to incentivize online reviews because I need the exposure. I want to run a promotion for each customer, something along the lines of "$5 off for a review on any of the following..." (Want to point out now that I would in no way be paying for a positive review, just any review. I'll let my work speak for itself.)

But I don't know how to verify that. Let's say I have a customer, I've completed the job, given him the promotional material, and then he or she follows up with two reviews and then expects $10 off. How do I verify that customer actually left the review? What proof should I ask for? A screenshot with a timestamp?

Alternatively if anyone thinks this is a bad idea altogether and that I should a) incentivize differently, or b) not bother, I'm open ears.

    Thanks for any advice,

Best bookkeeping and inventory tracking program

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 11:33 AM PST

Trying to set up a side business with my wife and we are looking for good recommendations on an booking and inventory tracking program. We both have some bookkeeping and accounting experience, but are by no means CPA's so we can go beyond just the basics.

Freshbooks was my first go to, but that seems much more focused on companies that invoice for jobs rather than companies that have products they sell. I looked at quickbooks online which seemed like a decent option, not perfect but would work, but to get the inventory stuff it would be $50/month which is much more expensive than the other options and pretty pricey for the size of which we are starting this business off as.

    Any recommendations?

(US) Looking to hire remote (AU) non-resident employee

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:56 PM PST

I can seem to phrase this correctly to search in google I guess. We are a U.S. LLC looking to hire (or contract) a remote employee. They will not work in the US and are not residents of the US (they are Australian). I see some information for independent contractors, but I don't see tax information for having an actual employee. Is this not something companies do? We are not registered as a business outside of the US. We are not looking to open a foreign location. If it is best to have them as an independent contractor, what forms do we submit as a company about their employment?

    Small Business Logo Use

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 04:53 PM PST

Not sure if this is the best sub for this post. Recently used freelance to have a logo created for my small business. I paid $30 for this individual to create a logo. I was wondering if I technically own this logo. As in, can I trademark this logo as my own. I have done some research but can only find instances if the logo in use is already trademarked. If anyone has any experience with this type of situation it would be greatly appreciated.

Any "Self-Help" type books that aren't heavy on religion?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:55 AM PST

I've tried reading "Purpose Driven Life" & "The Power of Positive Thinking" as these are two highly recommended confidence boosting books. However, I'm not a religious person and these two books have religion as the basis for most everything in them, which makes them hard to read. Does anyone have any similar types of books they can recommend that don't have religion as the center point of the material? Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill was a good one I've read, but I struggle to find others.

What to include in a digital marketing strategy

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:01 PM PST

    Hey guys!

Hope you are all keeping well and had an enjoyable new year.

I am just getting back into some work today, had a very nice vacation and when I checked my emails I had a very interesting proposal in my inbox.

In the past before I have been helping some local businesses with their online presence - majority of that being SEO and Instagram (they were my specialities as such).

I was recommended to a start up in the travel industry and have been working with them for the last few weeks, and basically the email stated that they would like me to become their entire social media manager for 2018.

I have never been in complete control of an entire companies social media presence before so I am at a bit of a loss. Essentially they want me to set up an annual strategy to define objectives per media, what sort of content per media and to provide the actual content on a monthly basis to their accounts. They did specify that they would also be able to provide some content aswell, but hoping that I would be able to take that over, although it would only be photos.

So essentially I am basically just contemplating all this witha few questions:

    • What sort of objectives could it be that they are looking for? As in how specific do they have to be?

    • Is there any "format" as such for these plans when presenting to a client?

    • Do I include paid advertising etc or does that come out of my pay?

    • And then of course the burning question for me: How much do you charge for providing a service like this?

Any feedback or advice at all would be awesome.

    Thanks.

As a SBO, how to psychologically deal with losses due to your own inefficiency?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 03:41 PM PST

Say.. you realized you lost 30-40% of that year's revenue due specifically to inaction on your behalf. You see the burn of one of your best projects going red for the year.

Changes to processes have been made, controls are in the midst of being installed. But the sting remains.

    The barrier when selling video

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:06 PM PST

The price of video content is the most prominent barrier in front of potential customers. For instance, the average price for video courses can range between $300–$1,500. To decide to pay such an amount is not so simple if you are not sure exactly what is inside. This applies even for cheaper video games or other videos.

In other words, the buyer is not certain whether the video contains precisely the knowledge or information that is necessary for him, whether he likes the manner of teaching or submitting materials, and the quality level of the product. For the customer, it would be good to get acquainted with the content before buying.

Promo videos often offered by sellers do not give customers a full picture. As a rule, these videos are executed like an advertisement and can contain good quality and encouraging words, but they do not determine the quality or the actual content of the video that the customer is going to buy.

How to sell online and how this problem could be solved. Pay As You Go (PAYGO) model for selling video content.

    How it works.

It does not matter how much money a potential buyer has or how long a video is, and there are no limits on timing or minimum payment amount to start to watch. You just start watching and can stop at any time you want, go back to watching later, buy a full video, or continue to watch with a PAYGO model.

In practice, it works like this: You start watching. If you have watched one minute and stopped, you will be charged only for sixty seconds. The price for each second is determined based on the cost of the full video, which is defined by the seller. Before starting to watch, a buyer can see the price per second, and won't be surprised when they are charged.

PAYGO allows users to get acquainted with the content; evaluate the content; and decide between further watching, buying a full video, or abstaining from buying. This is the best way to sell video online. On the one hand, it lowers the decision threshold for a buyer, and on the other hand, it presents an opportunity for video sellers to increase the total number of sales and boost the loyalty of buyers who do not have the fear of losing money.
