Please use this thread to post any Jobs that you're looking to fill (including interns), or services you're looking to render to other members.

We do this to not overflow the subreddit with personal offerings (such logo design, SEO, etc) so please try to limit the offerings to this weekly thread.

Since this thread can fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

Our first week open launching a service based brand.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 06:27 AM PST

After planning my launch for about 2 months I finally opened the doors last Tuesday...

This marks going from a freelance digital marketer of 3 years to operating an agency with two other great guys. I want to take the time to give back to this community as I've picked up so much great information here over the years.

(I've written up a post about our first week open.)

I plan on making this more of an open documentation of trial and error and successes and failures as well as a way to get feedback of how to improve moving forward.

I'll give you a rundown of what we did:

    • Made over 200 outreach calls
    • Sent over 100 emails to businesses in our area and niches
    • Finalized legal forms

    What our expenses were:

    • Rent + Deposit: -$1,400
    • Programs and SaaS's: -$650
    • Mundane items: -$325

    Total expenses: -$2,375

What we've brought in so far: * 2 website redesigns: +$2,400 (half down then half at completion) * 2 local seo packages: +$850 * 1 PPC campaign: +$450

    Total Gross: +$3,700

So far we're really happy with how this week has gone, I would like to make a monthly log detailing how things go and sharing with those who might find it useful.

I'm open to hearing from you guys on how I could improve. I'm not perfect but I'm always open and listening. Thanks for reading.

Skills over schools: how companies are hiring for learning ability rather than for past credentials

Kevin Delaney, VP of Learning and Development at LinkedIn, says that recruiters will mainly look for learning agility, passion, and fit while considering potential candidates rather than a static set of previously acquired skills.

Find your ideal mentor for less than a cup of coffee? - what do you think

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:01 PM PST

So I've been running a startup for a little over a year, and as we've grown to over 150+ in our first couple of weeks. I wanted some feedback on the reddit communities thoughts on what we are doing, where improvement is needed. I talked about why I started this in a post a couple of weeks ago, and my backstory.

Currently, we have over 100 mentors, in 55+ subjects, there is goal sitting, chatting all that kind of stuff, for $10/MO my team handpicks you two mentors based on what you are trying to do or learn.

What do you think about this? Concept? Pricing? Open to ideas..

    https://www.etasked.com/

Update: So grateful for all the feedback and people checking us out, I have been working on the platform and website for the last 6 hours. I will be replying to everyone after we are done with the updates. Again thank you Reddit all of this feedback has been so amazing!

Update 2.0: Replied to a lot of the comments been up for a long time will reply to rest when I wake up, thank you for feedback everyone this is amazing. (Updated website too)

I want to do marketing consulting for local businesses but I don't have any money left to buy a business license - just a website and logo, can I just go on until I get paid by first client?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:59 AM PST

I got a few responses from leads, but I feel insecure since I only have a website and logo. I haven't done the EID or gotten business license yet (LLC, SCorp, etc) Am I running a risk if I just work with a client a few weeks or something and have them pay me then use this money to get the business license and finish setting myself up to become official? Note: This would be by first client, I just feel hesitant because I read that I could pay some kind of fines. Thank you!

Case Study: Reliably getting 2M views per video on youtube

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:31 AM PST

Look at this guy's youtube videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKOvOaJv4GK-oDqx-sj7VVg/videos

See the most recent ones getting 3.7M views, 2.6M, 2.4M and so on. He isn't posting everyday, but those are pewdiepie numbers. And see before that he had some videos getting 20k doing fitness stuff. And some gaming videos when you really scroll down. He only has 360k subscribers, but he has found a niche now that gets him 2-4M views for each vid. Its like a mini episode of House MD but its a true story.

He is a smart guy who tried a lot of things to get his youtube to grow. A lot of totally different things.

He tried making videos based on what he thought people wanted. First he thought he could get traction from gaming and acting weird like pewdiepie. But its just so oversaturated and he wasn't particularly good at it.

He then started weight loss and diet tips. Another huge market with a lot of popular channels doing this. And he had something kind of unique to say: he lost 30 pounds in a few months and also was training to be a doctor. He talked about how different diet plans affect people differently. As a doctor who also had lost weight, and knew a little about youtube/video-editing, he was a triple-threat.

He made a medical mystery video like the one in the OP and then it blew up to 3M views. People loved it. Great editing, presented by a doctor, great music. His script reads like sales copy. Its full of hooks, pauses, "what happened will amaze you!". He knows a bit about sales and marketing. But unlike a lot of sales copy it has the money load in the video, describing all the weird / gory / cool stuff that happens to people that do things to themselves. It also fits the "what would happen if" mindset of many viral videos like "will it blend" and "cut with 1000 degree knife" and "what if I hydraulic press this?" format that is proven to draw interest.

But he wouldn't have got successful if he just started a video like this straight away. Its well edited, presented, with good "copy", spacing.

If you are smart and driven and want something, you can keep pivoting until you tap a niche that combines a few completely different skills on a venn diagram, that not many other people have, that has mass appeal.

The youtuber we looked at just now needs to consistently keep releasing these videos. He will be able to leverage his channel to make a lot of money. He could be the "bizarre medical mysteries guy" and get onto talkshows / release books / products. He potential audience size is massive - my mother likes his videos.

Conclusions and actions for aspiring youtubers to take:

    • really experiment with completely different things until you get traction. But do give each attempt a sincere try. Defining "sincere" is a hard problem.

    • master some totally different skills in your day-jobs or careers that can be idea-sexed and leveraged for mass appeal. As Marc Andressen and Scott Adams say "Seek to be a double/triple/quadruple threat."

    • learn sales copy, public speaking. They are basically universally useful, it will NEVER be a waste of time to learn them no matter your career or biz. And very few people take the time to learn them. How many engineers know sales copy?

    • know the dominant niches and trends on youtube (or any platform) and look for ones that grow fast and do a spin-off related to your domain of expertise. If you are a lawyer reading this then be the lawyer-equivalent to this chubbyemu guy and talk about bizarre human stories that happened in local court cases in your subject area.

    • But be the number 1 in your niche and follow Richard Kochs Star Principle. Experiment lots in the beginning but when you hit traction and are growing in your niche then dominate and become number 1 in your niche before growing horizontally and broadening.

Content Marketing - buttering up method

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 03:42 AM PST

Hi folks. I thought I would post another little guide on here as I like the community and hopefully this can help you with improving your online reach, traffic and hopefully make you a little bit of money.

I specialise in link building and content marketing. I don't like the other stuff really so I stick to something I'm good at.

This method is something that's probably been done before but I call it my buttering up method. Basically, you write a big post commending people in your niche.

An example of something I've done before is here https://web.archive.org/web/20170505175922/http://www.freeofficefinder.com:80/article/50-of-the-uks-most-inspiring-female-entrepreneurs - archived because I am no longer working with this client

This post took about a week to create but was well worth the effort in the end. Once it was published, I contacted every single business in the post as well as the local news outlets for some of the lesser known women in the list. It is ranking high for the keywords and as well as that, is still the site's most visited page. In terms of social, tweets and Facebook shares went through the roof, because everyone likes to hear good things about themselves.

This was a niche that made it fairly easy, but how do you translate it into yours?

I'm not saying it works for everyone, but think about a little award for the best bloggers, best Youtube channel, successful young people or women in the niche, maybe people who didn't attend university etc.

At best you'll gain a shit load of links. At worst you've made some new friends and let influencers know who you are.

This is one of my favourite methods of content marketing because your response rate is higher and people say thank you and other nice things to you.

If anyone wants to give this a try, please keep me posted about the progress. If someone wants to do it but don't have the time, I am happy to do it for you - pm me for this !

Hope you guys find this helpful

Be "all in" vs "half in" to avoid missing game-changing opportunities.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:47 AM PST

Over the holidays, I watched "The Founder" - a movie about Ray Kroc and McDonalds and there's a memorable scene: When he was having trouble raising financing and banks were turning him down flat, a stranger (Harry Sonneborn) accosted him, after his visit to the bank, and said (I paraphrase) "Mr. Kroc, if you are not making money hand over fist, you are doing something wrong." Ray invites him to the office, shows him his books and Harry proceeds to tell Ray that he (Ray) does not know what business he is in. Anyway, Harry gets hired by Ray and goes on to dramatically reshape how Kroc structured his company, and contracts with franchisees, to form the foundation of the modern McDonalds.

Forget the Hollywood dramatization. The kernel of insight in this dramatization is this: Despite being super busy with all that's coming at you, it is super important to discern true opportunities from the chaff. How? IMHO: Mr. Kroc was all in in his interactions, and not half in as most of us are prone to doing. That is, when you listen to someone, listen completely (and, train/encourage your employees to do this as well). This means:

    1. When you are in a meeting, you are completely focused on that meeting - whether a sales call, a 1-1 with an employee, etc. Too often, we are only half in - we engage only partially by frequently glancing at mobile phones, paying only perfunctory attention to the matter at hand.
    2. Follow (and, foster) a culture of "argue like you're right, and listen like you're wrong."
    3. De-clutter - don't accept meetings or action items in which you cannot do justice to completely.

Worth it to start a Coffee, Comics, and Beer type cafe?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 12:41 PM PST

    Hi all,

Looking to possibly become a small business owner, and wanted to reach out to those that have experience.

I would absolutely love to open up a coffee "bar", that sells comics, and beer in the afternoons. Kinda set-up like a: "come get some coffee and geek out, then come in for a beer and read comics after work to unwind". Possibly even considering adding arcade games and board games to keep people busy.

Note: I also want to hire individuals with disabilities and autism, as my state has only a handful of businesses that will hire this population. I currently work in the behavioral mental health field, but find my passions are more than just sitting in an office and working in a clinical setting.

Has anyone done anything kinda similar? How do I start? How much do I need to have saved?

    Starting my own engineering company

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:53 AM PST

I'm in my senior year of college, graduating in December of this year. I attend one of the top universities in the United States and really want to start my own company. However, I just have absolutely no idea where to start. I have my ideas and what I want to develop (mining technologies) that I have come up with throughout my college career. I have a part time job right now that helps me get by with my bills and rent, but not much is saved up. I just have no idea where to start with going forward to start a company, get clients and investors, and so on. If there are any books or advice from anyone, I would greatly appreciate it.

Can't figure out what to do with my creativity

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:19 AM PST

For a while i've been struggling with myself. I feel inspired and creative and I just want to start something up, but I just can't figure out what. I need to lose my creativity somewhere because it's killing me. I'm still a student so my budget isn't the highest but I saved some money over the last years.

A little background: I'm a 20y/o girl and studying web development but I don't really see myself going in that direction. I listen to rock music a lot and often go to concerts and festivals. I love fashion, make up, traveling, interior and eating. I also have an obsession with stationary for some reason.

Anybody who can help me to find something I can put all my creativity in?

    Question about selling and patents?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:03 AM PST

If I use google patents to search an item, if expired this means anyone can sell right?

I see an active patent for something created in like 1998 but big companies and even small brands are selling the same item in their own label. So I was thinking of dog supplies and one of them being pet boots. Does this mean I am not able to sell? There's like several different patents dating back to the 40's so I'm a bit confused.

When to kill off a project?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:59 AM PST

I have been at my project for 3 ish months now since launch with a decent amount of time put in before launch. It is an asset management SaaS designed for small and medium businesses that don't have a tech department and do not have contracts with managed service providers. The interface and options are simple and somewhat limited. That is not to say features are missing but that it doesn't have 100's of bells and whistles with it that are for edge case users. It is a core product.

I tried bringing someone on to help me and they turned out to be useless and a waste of time and money (they needed google drive). I am wary of bringing on another person to help me sell this product to customers because of the last one.

I know sales is not my strong suit neither is SEO or writing content. I know managing people, finances, product development/coding not sales. I want to continue the project but I just can't seem to get users. I have tried contacting people and no luck. A few responded and looked at it but they were tech companies not my ideal user.

How do I know when to give up on the project and to go onto another one? I did the research before launch and everything seemed good, the businesses I talked to that said they would use it are using it on average once a week which is to be expected. I can't seem to get more businesses than those ones. So sure I am making money but not enough to make it worth the time of staying working on it. I have 16 paying customers with an average net of $9.74 per customer. So $155 a month is not enough to do anything with. I might leave it running and have the small income but not sure what else to do.

Can this person I am helping become an entrepreneur?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:56 AM PST

    Some details about her -

    • She lives on an Indian Reservation in Alaska and spoke mainly her Native American language

    • Never graduated high school

    • Got hold of a 3-hour seminar video that she kept watching to get rid of her rez accent that is common in Alaska Native villages and speak standard American English. She watched that video twice a day for a year for accent improvement - so she must have watched it about 800 times so far.

    • Liked that topic (financial derivatives) and started watching more videos on that topic on youtube. Got hooked.

    • Torrented textbooks on financial derivatives and kept reading them.

    • Started paper trading after 5 years of video watching and textbook reading.

    • Started investing money of family members and relatives. And got spectacular returns on a consistent basis.

    • Answers all questions on licensing exams correctly but I told her there's no point getting a license because they all want a degree - and she doesn't even have a high school diploma.

    • She will make a brilliant options trader on wall street if she had formal qualifications.

The question is - can she do anything on the entrepreneurial front without formal credentials?

I have a unique product. How do I capitalize?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:43 AM PST

    Hello Entrepreneurs,

I spent some time between assignments developing a server software product that automates the development of complex web services/applications.

"Design, build, and deploy complex web applications, to your server, in minutes for free". http://systemssolutiondesigner.com/

I have been in the corporate IT service business for over 25 years and have noticed that information management has been stagnant since the introduction of MS Office. There has to be a better way.

Giving the end user (non-developer) the ability to build web applications, with the same effort as making an XL spread sheet, would be useful for both business and personal contexts I think.

The base product is free OSS but there will be add-ons offered, that solve specific business/personal problems, that have a cost. I have little experience in personal business planning and execution.

What do you think of the idea in general? Should I get a partner w/ business experience? Is this something you would kickstart? help-a-nerd!
