An accident stays on your record for X years... when does that clock start

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 02:38 PM PST

I got in an Accident February 2016. The case settled within days of my 6 month renewal October 2017. I moved recently and asked about my discount and whether I was at fault. They didnt know. Called the department handling my claim. They said I was found at fault March 2016. There are still medical claims outstanding... If an accident stays on your record for say 3 years: Does that start from the date of the accident, the date I was considered at fault or the date the case settled?

Paying high insurance on car worth 1800$.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:45 PM PST

So here is what my current insurance looks like. Insurance https://imgur.com/gallery/IB4K1

I live in suburbs of Dallas and I don't have any traffic violations or accidents , claims. My car is an old 2006 Camry that hardly sells for 1800$ with 150k miles on it.

Insurance wants a signed title before giving me an offer. What's my recourse? [MA]

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:36 PM PST

I read some archived posts here and spoke to some family, so I know NOT to send them the signed title until they make an offer. They have not yet determined whether the vehicle is a total loss. However, the final line of the letter they sent me reads like this:

We are required to secure several items before we can settle a total loss claim. Please gather the items listed below: • Signed Title

Does this mean they won't move forward with the claim until I hand them a signed title, or just that they won't settle in the event that I choose to accept their offer until the signed title is provided?

    Changing Insurance - Violation Question

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 10:52 PM PST

I was involved in an out-of-state car accident in a rental vehicle in Nov. and although we had an independent witness who was basically on our side (i.e. saying I don't know where the eff that car came from either), I was still issued a citation for an improper left turn.

I was offered the option to take an online driver's course so that I did not get points accrued against my license, which I completed the same day as the accident occurred.

I've had my license since 2010 and no issues at all before 2015 when I began working a job which required me to drive an obscene amount of miles daily (sometimes as much as 150+). My current insurance sent me a letter stating they are dropping me, probably because I've had a few other small claims within the last 3 years although 1 of them was glass only (windshield needed to be replaced after a crack spidered) and 1 of them was an accident I was found to not be at fault for. The other 2 were in parking lots (and I'll go to my grave swearing only 1 of them was actually my fault). All of this is to say: please don't judge me too harshly :( I'm generally a safe driver but since I drive a LOT, I'm by default at higher risk of getting involved in this kind of stuff.

My actual question is this: I'm applying for new insurance (I'm aware I can appeal the decision but not sure I want to because I was already unhappy with my current provider for unrelated reasons) and I was wondering, when they ask about history of accidents and traffic violations, if I need to disclose this particular citation since I took the driver's class and the points were therefore not assessed against my license.

My (perhaps incorrect) assumption is that, if I got this type of violation outside of the context of the accident and completed this course, the insurance would not be informed/it wouldn't mess with my existing rates whatsoever. So the same should hold true even if I'm applying for something new?

I don't want to lie or be unethical but at the same time I also don't want to unnecessarily dick myself over, as I've read in some other threads/places that if you disclose anything - even if it does not end up showing up on your record when they pull it - they are still required to penalize you for it on your rate.

I haven't spoken with an agent yet, only gotten an online quote in which I omitted the violation by the above thought process but was completely honest about my history of accidents (so yes, I did report the actual accident which caused the citation). Should I mention the violation when I actually talk to someone, or just keep my mouth shut unless they mention it/ask about it specifically? I guess I just don't fully understand my own obligation in this situation with the driver's course factoring in.

I live in AZ if it matters.

Liability insurance for a car? (what does it cover?)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:02 PM PST

So. I was driving before being diagnosed with epilepsy. It's illegal to drive without insurance here : what kind we have, I don't know. I hit a city pole and owe them 4K, no one got hurt besides my car was totaled.

Would my liability insurance cover this or am I fucked over?

DWLR charge but not conviction on MVR

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:50 PM PST

So I had a driving while license revoked charge in december 2012. I was not convicted. Long story that probably doesn't matter but the short version was a failure to appear for expired inspection ticket that was also eventually dismissed. I have no other charges, accidents or tickets on my record.

I just switched car insurance from progressive to geico, and saved a bit of coin. But on the last step geico increased the rate about $3 from what was quoted, citing the DWLR on my MVR.

Before I go through the trouble of objecting or trying to correct something, is this right? A charge with no conviction from 5+ years ago is still affecting my insurance rate at all? It's not a lot of money, but it still seems harsh. When does it stop?

North Carolina if it matters. Thanks!

    Renters insurance liability

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 02:32 PM PST

Is there any chance that a renter's policy's liability portion can cover the named insured if he gets into a car accident, and the amount claimed (lawsuit) is over the auto policy? In this scenario, the named insured is the same for both Auto and Renters, and both policies are with the same company. (NJ)

Insurance dragging feet about my claim

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 02:48 PM PST

I've been out of work roughly around 9 weeks now. Had shoulder pain and its turned out to be some issues in my neck. I've filed a claim thru work to get STD benefits and still as I am writing this I have received nothing. At first they claimed I wasn't insured now they wanting to do an investigation to make sure this injury has never happened before (which it hasn't). Do i need to seek legal advice? I have bills to pay and i'm doing nothing but getting more and more behind.

As a homeowner, am I covered if remodeling work I've done myself goes haywire?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:55 AM PST

    NY State

As a homeowner, am I covered if something I've repaired myself suddenly goes haywire somehow?

I've been doing remodeling to my house since I've owned it. Little things here and there, but I just realized that it's really added up to a lot of stuff.

    For example

    • I replaced a bunch of the old leaky plumbing with modern PEX and new shutoffs.
    • Old wall outlets and light switches replaced
    • old/unsafe wiring cleaned up, and/or replaced.
    • New hot water tank
    • Remodeled kitchen with new cabinets, counters, and appliances.
    • Remodeled bathroom
    • Added new light fixtures where there wern't any before.
    • added a bath exhaust fan when there wasn't one before.

    Etc....

A lot of stuff I've messed with, and I'm just wondering if something crazy happened, like PEX breaking and water getting everywhere, would I still be covered?

    HIPAA and health insurance statements

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:51 AM PST

[NY|MD] I am an 18 year old under my parents insurance. Under HIPAA I am afforded medical confidentiality, however I am under the impression that if I go to the doctors/fill a prescription and use their health insurance that I am under they can look at the insurance statements and I no longer have confidentiality. Am I under the right impression? The alternative is not using their insurance which I most definitely cannot afford. I would be paying the co-payments btw.

[CA] Can I claim diminished value against my uninsured motorist?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 08:19 AM PST

California. FYI: I was not at fault in the accident (dash cam video showed him swerving into me). Fellow who hit me was uninsured. I have UMBI and UMPD coverage.

My car was severely damaged, all airbags went off, rear door and wheel torn off, and the rear quarter panel was ripped up. The sunroof was out of track, so I am guessing the whole frame is tweaked. The vehicle is a 2013 Tesla S P85

Given all that, the insurance company STILL hasn't made a determination to total the vehicle even though the accident happened 12/21. I am getting concerned that they may determine the car is repairable.

If they do try to fix it, can I claim diminished value against my own policy?

    Need help getting health insurance.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 03:04 PM PST

I am a current undergrad student in California. I transferred here from Illinois and am still not a California resident. I needed to take a Leave of Absence for this Winter quarter but I didn't realize that would mean I would lose the schools insurance that I was on as well as the on-campus resources. I still live near the campus because I signed a year lease and I am working here but I need health Insurance and am not sure whether getting the Illinois equivalent of medi-cal would still be a good idea if I'm living in california. Also I don't think I'm able to get medi-cal or california covered without being a resident.

I was found at fault for causing a car accident

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 10:36 AM PST

A month ago I was in a car accident. I was exiting a parking lot when another driver hit me. He was trying to cross the lane that I was driving in and ended up hitting the front left part of my car and totalled it. HOWEVER I was recently notified that I was at fault because the other driver claimed that he had stopped to cross the lane and that it was me who didn't stop.

The thing is that there were no stop signs and that he DIDN'T attempt to stop. I had the right of way because he was the one that was attempting to cross/merge onto my lane. If he really did stop then he should have seen me coming AND if he really did stop then he would have had to accelerate at an incredible speed within 7 feet to cause that much damage to my car, which isn't really possible considering the car that he was driving.

Is there any way that I can challenge this and make him pay for the damage to my car ?

Car broken into (Few questions) (MI)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:35 AM PST

I had my car broken into, Both backpacks were stolen. This was at a wings game and I had my work items with me. Here are a few questions.

We didn't file a claim on the broken window. It was broken and costs the same to repair as a comprehensive claim would have been.

On the home owners insurance side, I started a claim but I haven't heard back yet. I have a list of items but 1. I don't have a receipt for all of them. I'm also not sure if it is worth it for the claim, I have to find out what my deductible is.

    I lost:

    4 Iphone cords (real ones)

1 wireless charger (got it for xmas have receipt)

1 battery power bank (Have receipt)

2 pairs of airpods. Have shipment notice and serial numbers, no receipt as it was a gift

    Hershel backpack (no receipt)

    Targus backpack(No receipt)

Ipad mini gen 2 (No receipt, but serial number)

Macbook pro Retina 2013 model fully loaded (16gb ram, 500gb ssd, i7)

Pair of my old bluetooth headphones (Jlab epic 2)

I also lost some expensive medication (I'm not sure if this can be covered but I reported it since it is a controlled substance and cost me $250 to replace. It was a full prescription)

I'm not sure if it is worth it to file a claim. Between Ipad and macbook and other items I would assume I would get some money ,but I don't have every receipt, just information and serial numbers I reported stolen.

Finally I lost a pair of hockey skates and gloves (They were there cuz I go skating downtown at lunch)

Any ideas or am I out of luck? Sucks not only have I lost $250 on the window I'm now out about 5k in actually replacing my items (Unless I find a bunch of used deals on laptops / ipads)

    Any suggestions?

EDIT: I am nearly positive my deductible is 1000.

    Will insurance companies price match?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:38 PM PST

    Hello,

I've been with American Family for 10 years now (auto\home\life\cycle), got a quote for liberty mutual that was several hundred dollars cheaper. Just curious if there are any agents on here that have\will price match for long term customers. I sent an email to my agent, not sure what the industry standard practice is.

Accidentally hit my car to a mailbox. What should I do?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:28 PM PST

Hi all. Long story short, accidentally hit my car when reversing into a mailbox. I heard a large bang, but luckily i'm fine. I parked my car and looked at the back. Doesn't look bad at all but there is a tiny scratch near my bumper.

What do I do now? Do I have to report this? Is there a problem if I don't? I mean should Not sure even I even need repairs, but would taking my car to a car shop be enough?

Do I have to report this to my insurance company? Thanks.

Can my Loan Provider sign over my title to an insurance co. with no input from me?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:45 AM PST

FYI, I already pisted at r/legaladvice and they suggested I post here.

So, my basic question is this: can my loan provider just essentially give away my car in this situation? If not, what can be done?

I'll try to keep this concise. The whole story takes place in Ohio.

1- lady hits my car, (on which I still have a $5000 loan) causing a lot of damage. Largely cosmetic, but the car is driveable.

2- her insurance co. says they'll total my car and give $4300 to my loan provider, just fill out the POA and return it.

3- I tell them no, the payout is too low and I'm not signing anything.

4- they reply saying the re-valued the car at $4393.

5- I tell them no again, and I'll be contacting a lawyer.

6- Two weeks go by, and I'm contacted by my Auto loan holder saying they've received a totaled vehicle payout of $4300 (remember the adjusted amount was $4393) and that they've signed the title over to the insurance company.

7- I turn to Reddit for legal advice.

    Thanks in advance.

[California] Need help finding more than just liability insurance for a food trailer business

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:36 AM PST

Friend has a concession trailer and has been unable to find a company willing to offer more than just liability insurance. He would like to get insurance for theft, fire, and damage/vandalism. So far, every insurance company he's called will not offer anything beyond liability because it is not a permanent structure and none of the auto insurance companies seem willing to insure such a business.

If anyone here has any thoughts on where to look or what specifically to ask for it would be helpful. Maybe he's just asking the wrong questions when calling around.

    Question about pain and suffering.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:35 AM PST

Quick question about a recent auto accident I was involved in.

The second week of December, I was t-boned. The other driver was found to be at-fault and their insurance is paying for the repairs to my vehicle. I should be able to pick my car up from the shop today.

My question is, will I receive any type of compensation for my time spent without my vehicle other than the rental that was provided for me? I am in Maryland, and the at-fault driver is insured through AllState, if that matters.
