Why are payroll taxes so high? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 04:00 PM PST I own a small restaurant in oregon and am absolutely perplexed by how much taxes we have to pay not only for payroll but everything else as well. I give out approx. $8000 a month to myself and 6 employees. They each get about $1000 and I get $2000. We get taxes taken out of our paycheck so everyone receives about $700 and I receive $1300. So we can barely afford to live outside of this place as it is, but on top of that, the business has to pay $5000 a month because I paid all my employees. I really wish I could split that between us and pay everybody more, but payroll taxes are literally killing us. So my question is, does everyone get hit this hard? Can some one shed some light on a way to deal with This? Maybe a way around it, or some tax breaks I might not be aware of. Thanks and have a good day redditors!! Edit: Thank you all for your answers, if anything I think I've put to much trust into my accountant, and have stepped too far back, and also asking the wrong questions. u/areedzona and u/BruinsFan478 are right. The 5000 grand is not on top of the 8000, only about half is on top, the other half is the withheld from our paychecks. Bottom line is I'm missing money and will be up a while digging for a better answer, as I no longer think payroll taxes are the issue. [link] [comments] |
GE has forced all future Purchase Orders to 120 Net payment terms, affects small business Posted: 07 Dec 2017 02:37 PM PST Usually it is up to the supplier to dictate payment terms, but GE likes to come back with a statement that tells the business that they will be paying within 120 days. Some quick research shows that other businesses, especially smaller ones, are seeing more and more bullying from large corporations. Even when the corporation promises to offer a significant business opportunity, the small business supplier becomes a lender (this should be a bank's job) and passing the cost eventually to the consumer/end user. Frustrating. Anyone else experience this behavior? [link] [comments] |
Help! Am I paying too many taxes? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:30 PM PST I am a single member LLC and recently hired employees. I am paying payroll taxes and also setting aside an additional 33% for taxes for LLC- Am I double saving or do employees just cost this much? Feel like I should have more net income. TIA [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:04 PM PST Basically tutoring over the internet is a form of telecommuting. Zoning officer said we are not zoned for home businesses. This is in Maine. [link] [comments] |
Need some advice on what to do with my website Posted: 07 Dec 2017 11:18 PM PST So guys I own 50% of Seedandgarden.com . As you can imagine it's very seasonal only during the spring do sales actually come in. Neither him or I have the time or energy to help the business grow like we wanted to in the beginning. We've owned the business for approximately three years. We have one part-time employee he who helps fill orders. So here's the question: I feel that we have a couple options.
Thought about contacting some people on YouTube that make gardening videos and see if they're interested. But just because they're interested in gardening doesn't mean that they're interested in the business of gardening or have the tools or knowledge to make a site like this grow. I'm open to any suggestions or ideas. [link] [comments] |
Received Labor law request form but... Posted: 07 Dec 2017 07:03 AM PST ...I don't have any employees. I've tried calling the customer service number literally over 30 times. But every time, it's "If you are receiving this message, it's because all lines are busy assisting other callers. Please try again shortly." then it automatically hangs up. The deadline to respond is the 31st, and on their form that they mailed me, there's no option for "No employees". The form is to pay $84 for a labor law poster. Will I get penalized if I ignore it? Or is there someone else I can call or ask?? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Selling hand carved wooden figures Posted: 08 Dec 2017 02:29 AM PST So I recently visited my home country and came across these very cheap carved wooden figures (elephants, lions etc) made by local people. Since the price is so low, and these are handmade, I thought there is potential for them to be imported to Australia where I live now and make some decent money. Whats steps should I undertake to make this reality as a beginner? Just give me dot points and I will do further research into it? Also is it possible to get big retailers such as Kmart and Target to sell these for me rather than selling them on Ebay? I might even be able to get custom made figures as desired by these retailers. How do I pitch to these guys if it is even possible? Thanks a lot inadvance [link] [comments] |
Religious ads on Facebook - Page categories Posted: 08 Dec 2017 01:47 AM PST Hi all, I'm having a bit of an issue with Facebook ads and wrongly listing my business page under the religious category. I've been palm reading for a number of years but I've recently started offering online readings. I've got my Facebook page set up and I have already started collecting some really great feedback. My only problem is now ads. I had issues boosting a post and it seemed to be in review forever. I couldn't quite put my finger on what the issue was, but I did a bit of digging and (reasonably so) Facebook isn't too keen on religious ads. Now palm reading really isn't a religion at all, but I think I remember putting it in the religion category when making my page under the assumption 'Oh well it's spiritual I guess and I can change it later.' - Does anyone know if I can change this because I've been looking around this morning and I don't think I can? I'm pretty sure if I get my page out of the religious category I'll be able to boost posts with no issue. A friend of mine suggested making a new page again but I've already got some good customer feedback so I'm reluctant to abandon the page. EDIT: I've checked the obvious place under general but only 'local business' is listed. I just remember going through more options when I made the page and this is the only idea I have as to why my ads are still sat in review. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2017 12:27 PM PST I help out with my relative's business where he sells these garden labels that are metal and sturdy. I do my part remotely from another state by trying to generate traffic and sales, but I'm pretty much a beginner at this despite his constant praise of me (he praises a lot of people). My relative has incredibly high sales expectations that we can get $5 million from sales from selling everything we have and what he plans to sell in the future. The problem is that he's been saying this same stuff for years. His old site was on Magento, but he didn't update anything on the main site since it was made 7 years ago like cleaning up the text or adding more and better pictures for the products. When he first hired me, he wanted me to make CTA's on his blog pages. But I had absolutely no tools to make them with and he was terrible at telling me what to do. And the blogs generated virtually no traffic so I knew that my efforts wouldn't make a dent in sales. I ended up convincing him to have me do something else and I finally got him to switch to Shopify, but his expectations have gotten to the point that they don't seem feasible at our current state. He claims we can get all of this traffic and sales, but our traffic has literally been reduced to a trickle, less than a 100 views and no sales yesterday. I've been trying to market his products online with Facebook ads and Google Adwords, but there's no noticeable difference. He thinks that he can get all of these leads from using Zoho, but he still hasn't set anything up yet. He talks A LOT about doing big projects in the future like getting a laser engraver and makes these huge emails for everybody, but the stuff never gets done since he has no time management skills and always says "I don't have time" while his staff is made up of about 4 part timers. And he has a more successful plant business which is seasonal that he planned to sell. But the deal fell through and he decided to double down on it, which likely means he won't focus on the plant label business again when planting season starts. Also, he's in denial about a lot of his problems like financing. He keeps thinking that he can get help from his "rich friends", but they haven't loaned him anything in years. I talked to him about this and he wouldn't accept that fact. I'm stuck at what to do to generate new sales since our only saving grace is our newsletter, but we haven't been sending it out frequently as of late. We did a Black Friday sale which was pretty good, but sales are terrible right now. I'm nearing the limit of what I can do so if anybody could answer or at least give an opinion on one of these two questions, it'd help me out so much. A. What's the best and cheapest way to generate high quality traffic to the site? (it's this one for people who need to see it in order to help https://www.idealgardenmarkers.com ) B. Is my relative's business a lost cause if he can't sort out all of his problems? [link] [comments] |
Complex Product Offering - How to go about an effective web navigation? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 02:27 PM PST I have my site hosted with Squarespace and I'm trying to find out how to best handle this? We sell and service product of brand a in our home state. We distribute / sell brand b solely for export markets. They're technically the same product but they have different sales strategies. Starting a new IT sole proprietorship Posted: 07 Dec 2017 10:55 AM PST I have filed an unincorporated business with the Secretary of State. I am starting my own IT business as the only employee. What steps should I take to ensure things go smoothly on the start up? If anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Fulfillment centers are not for me. Would some business owner like to partner up and ship my orders? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 12:05 PM PST Hi, I am a European small business owner - I manufacture goods and sell them in my European online store. Now I would like to open my online store also for the US customers and I am having trouble with finding the right fulfillment partner in the US. I've already approached dozens of fulfillment centers and neither of them is a good fit for me (or I am not a good fit for them). Some are too expensive, some don't even disclose their rates, some are in a bad location (slow shipping), some are unreliable and so on. As a result of that I would prefer to open my own warehouse in the US, but at the moment it would mean too much bureaucracy and expenses for me as an US non-resident and non-citizen. So I thought I could find here some small online store owner from the US who ships a few packages a day with FedEx or UPS and would like to make several hundred dollars more each month by fulfilling my orders. What do you think? Please drop me a message if you are interested! By the way, I could offer the same the other way around in my warehouse here in Europe. [link] [comments] |
I am trying to Grow my video production business, Any Ideas? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 02:03 PM PST I shoot weddings and small commercial products but have been having trouble finding consistent work. Small town small business owners and social media marketing Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:01 PM PST I'm going to refer to small businesses as business in towns under 1000 people here, just for clarification. Generally, the average $3000 a month is a but steep for any small business for hiring out a social media manager. That usually leads to small businesses not having very well managed social media profiles, websites, online advertising and more. That's assuming if they have any of that at all. I was just wondering what price you would think is reasonable for a business this size. If you have a business this size, please mention that also with your comment. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
What kinds of businesses are most likely to have corporate parties, or team building exercises? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 04:41 PM PST I have an arcade I want to market it as a venue for corporate events and team building exercises; to be rented by the hour, during our closed hours in the day time during the week. Looking to target companies that would hve parties for 50 or less people, who should I call first? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:32 AM PST Hey everyone, I've been doing some looking around at the best Instagram tool that does not use a bot and I was wondering if anyone had any experience or input into any of them? Popamatic - https://popamatic.com/ - Seems like a good service, saw a couple of sketchy reviews online as well as a couple of reddit comments on them. Only $39 ThriveSocial - https://thrivesocial.io/ - The site looks nice and they have some real life examples on their website which gives me more confidence. Only $35, $80 if premium Networking-Expert - https://www.networking-expert.com/instagram.html - Another pretty good looking website. I can't find any real life examples or reviews. And it is the most expensive with $39 being the base package; $139 for the most expensive. Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Right now I am leaning towards Thrive Social but I would love some input! Thanks!!! I am working on a wedding vow service called XOJuliet.com if that helps at all. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2017 11:42 AM PST To make a long story short, i've thought long and hard about starting my own business for many years now, and i'm to the point where i'm selling 6k+ sales a week & only seeing an extra 100-200 dollars into my paychecks from these sales. This tells me that simply.. My boss benefits a lot more by employing me than i from being employed by him. This is not me being greedy, in my opinion i'm just being rational. It's time for me to be the guy in charge. My biggest worry to put it as simply as possible is : He's been established for 30 years.. that's why people call him. How do i get people to call me? Obviously there are free ways to advertise ranging from craigslist to even places like reddit. I'd hate to put everything on the line to have a phone that just doesn't ring. All i need is to have people call, making the sale is not an issue. It scares me because not only is my life affected, so is my wife & child's. Did you have a similar situation? How did you handle it? Did you stay employed or did you just jump right into it giving it your 100% attention? How was the transition from being employed with a steady paycheck to trying to build a customer base? I'd really like some insight from people who have been in my shoes, or even someone who hasn't been in my shoes but just went for their dream. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Dec 2017 11:40 AM PST So the last 5 years I've been a self employed tour guide offering a "pay what you feel like" tour 4 days a week, People tip 10-20 after the tour. 3 months ago I decided to expand and trained a friend to do the tours with me. My goal is to have a very small employee owned tour company with a free pay what you feel like tour daily. The guide would keep 80% of what they made and the company would get 20% to cover expensives/marketing. I'd like software, either an app or something online where after the tour the guide could enter the amount they made on the tour they worked and it would calculate the amount they owned the company. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Checking account with subcategories? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:42 AM PST Are there any products or services for small business owners to delegate deposits into various sub accounts automatically? For example, if a deposit of $5k is put in to the account then 10% goes into a utilities account, 15% for payroll, and so on. Obviously I do not want to open up 15 different kinds of accounts, and this way the bookkeeping can be a little simpler. [link] [comments] |

What info should be notated in the CRM? Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:44 AM PST My company is upgrading our CRM and we are designing processes for the sales team to follow regarding entering notes into the CRM. As of now, they basically don't enter any info beyond contact names. We sell technical security type equipment to businesses and schools (however I am the accounting person, so not really tuned into what is helpful to track from a sales side) - how does your organization use your CRM/what notes do you track?
