Should I have a lawyer contest a ticket to avoid any future liability? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 01:39 AM PST To make a long story short I was recently involved in a car accident involving multiple cars where I was the last car in the chain. As a result, the officer who came to the scene immediately assigned fault to me and gave me a ticket for "following too closesly" which carries 4 points in NY. I contacted my lawyer who is unable to respond because he is outside the country at this time and won't be back until January. Anyhow, the claims adjuster for the insurance company is currently still collecting evidence but based on the photographs provided he stated that the case is definitely bizarre (first car sustained practically no damage, 2nd car has a completely smashed up front end while the rear bumper has one 5" crack and a scuff from the impact with my license plate bracket and my car has a couple of cracks in the front bumper and a cracked grill that will need to be replaced). Adjuster stated fault would depend on the statement of the driver in car 1. In order to hedge myself against accepting any potential liability, I'm not sure how to proceed in regard to the ticket I received from the police officer. For instance, if I plead guilty, can this later be used against me if one of the other drivers decides to sue? A claims adjuster friend of mine looked over the photos as well and also came to the conclusion that from what it looks like, car 2 hit car 1 and I was unable to stop in time slightly crashing into car 2. She stated that even if car 1 states they felt one impact instead of two, the insurance company might still find car 2 partially liable. This is in NY, I have a spotless driving record over the past 10 years with 1 speeding ticket that was entirely dismissed and no prior accidents involving my fault (was rear ended one time by a driver that fell asleep at the wheel). Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Why does my premium keep going up? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:25 PM PST Background: I am 30 yo female with a clean driving record and no citations. I commute 8 miles to work a day. I have a 3 year old fuel efficient top safety pick MINI (I have always driven the same make of car) that I finance but almost paid off. I have no other riders in my car. I have a credit score of 807. I currently rent my residence for over 2 years (in a gated neighborhood) and I just got married 4 months ago. I don't understand why my car insurance keeps going up when my everything I know about risk factors keeps going down. 6 years ago, I drove the same exact make and model of car, was unmarried, renting, had a speeding ticket from 2012, a slightly lower credit score and my daily mileage was quadruple. And after all of this, my premiums were still almost 50% cheaper. I have shopped around at USAA and Allstate and they are slightly more expensive than what I am paying at Farmers for comparable coverage. Can someone explain this to me? [link] [comments] |
Am I considered at-fault if someone hits my parked car and leaves the scene? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:25 AM PST I live in Pennsylvania. I am a 21-year-old female with 1 at-fault accident on my driving record, no citations. I have a 2010 Dodge Charger R/T and am insured through Nationwide. As the title suggests, someone hit my parked car and left the scene without leaving a note or any information. Does the blame fall on me because I can't prove who hit me? I know I will need to pay my deductible but what I'm wondering is if I should expect my car insurance to increase now. [link] [comments] |
Can an insurance company ask for a letter of experience Posted: 29 Dec 2017 01:01 AM PST Can an insurance company request for a letter of experience for an incident that took place 3 years ago ? I was under the assumption that incidents that are over 3 years old cannot be used to raise your premium. [link] [comments] |
Thief broke window and car seat, California US. Will my premium go up if I file a claim? Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:36 AM PST I was eating in a restaurant and while my car was parked outside someone smashed the front passenger side window and stole the backpack inside (stupid I know, learned my lesson the hard way), and I am wondering if my insurance premium will go up if I file a claim? insurance: geico, comprehensive insurance. comprehensive insurance deductible: $250. car: 2010 honda crv [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:53 PM PST So i have a friend who was in a car accident and the damage was on the front end. He ended up reporting to the insurance as a hit and run. Even though it wasn't. The person that hit him just reported the accident to her insurance and my buddy got a call from her insurance company wanting his statement. His car was already fixed under the pretense that it was a hit and run. What can he do? What are the consequences if his insurance company finds out about him lying about the hit and run? Leaving insurance for a different line of work - where is my experience useful for something else? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:14 PM PST I've worked in claims for 6 years now, time split between auto and fire. I've never loved the work but never really hated it either, until lately. For a while I thought I could push through the stress and workload to enjoy a decent salary and retirement plan. I just want out at this point but really don't know what my skill set in claims would be valuable to in terms of a different career. My employer is one of the big name companies which I'm guessing looks decent on a resume. People who have either left or had insurance co workers leave for a change of pace, where did you/they go? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Hit by driver in tort state; issues with my insurance Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:46 PM PST I was t-boned by a driver who admitted fault to police and was also cited. In calling to report to my insurance, I discovered the policy had been canceled (lost paperwork I sent a few months ago but since I have a different type of policy with them, I still received the "[Insurance] payment has been auto deducted" email every month.). I immediately started a new policy with a different insurer. I'm just not sure how to proceed from here and looking for advice. Would my new insurance policy be revoked because I started it the day of an accident? Should I reach out to them or the other person's insurance? What can I expect? [link] [comments] |
Minor Not-At-Fault Accident Advice request Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:39 PM PST About a month ago I was rear ended on the way to work in a minor accident. This is the first time I've been in a not-at-fault accident. I contacted their insurance company, Progressive. Fast forward to now, they've ruled that their driver was at fault and has given me 3 options: (A) Give me a check for $624 (B) Repair my car using their service center and to expect out-of-pocket costs(~$200). They will provide a rental car (C) Repair my car at a service center of my choosing. They will provide a rental car. I preliminarily had my car quoted at 2 other body shops, one quoted 670 the other 770 and this was just seeing my bumper, and assuming there is no structural damage underneath. I got off the phone kind of confused relaying that I'd think on it. Why am I expected to pay for any of this? Is this normal? Should I push for them repairing 100% of the damage if I take it to their service center? Advice is appreciated. Edit: Progressive sent me an email description of the options which included the reasoning behind the potential additional cost. If they do the work they are essentially doing the whole bumper and guaranteeing thier work. There was some minor pre-existing damage on another part of the bumper so the out of pocket costs would come from that. [link] [comments] |
Finally know where I want to go - SIU/Fraud Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:37 AM PST So my manager has been asking me about where I ultimately want to start working towards in my claims career and I'm 99% it's SIU, I just figure out how the hell you even start working towards getting there. Most positions speak more to having investigator/surveillance experience above actual claim handling experience. [link] [comments] |
Car Insurance Q regarding lending of car to friend? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:26 PM PST Hypothetical question (New York State) I own my car outright. I have full coverage for myself (comprehension, collision, and liability). If I lend my car to a friend to drive around town for a day or week or something, is there additional coverage I can purchase from my car insurance company to cover myself in case he or she gets into an accident? Are they covered under my general insurance policy at all ?(is there a term for this I have to look for in my policy?) What if my friend has insurance on his own car? Would his/her insurance cover him and my car if they got into an accident with my car? Or do they specifically have to have insurance for my car? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:57 PM PST I live in Michigan, a no-fault state and have no collision insurance for the record I was in a parked car and rear ended by a girl in a Jeep backing out behind me. We agreed not to call the cops (which was stupid now that I think about it) nor the insurance companies and she agreed to pay for the damages. Took it to a collision place and the repairs will be $3200. I text her this and she said she can pay $2000 up front and the rest in monthly payments. 20 minutes later her mom calls telling me to take it up with her insurance and that they're not paying anything since the cost is a lot more than my car's worth and that her insurance will only cover $1000. She gave me her insurance policy # and agent number but refused to give her daughter's driver's license # or the license plate # of the Jeep. I have no writing of her committing to the payment so I know I'm screwed there but what exactly should I do? File a police report? I'm 23 and never been in an accident so all this is new to me. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
How to go about paying cash for car accident (my fault) Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:57 PM PST My fault: I rear ended a car with minimal damage, cosmetic if anything. Actually my bumper is visibly chipped, but his car looks fine. He was really nice and was saying that likely everything was OK and we probably did not need to involve the ins. We had not yet had a chance to exchange info before the city police came (busy road). The officer took our info and wrote up a report. While the officer was doing that I gave the guy my number but did not ask for his. If he contacts me, I'd like to offer to pay cash. If I pay in cash, I don't want him coming back to "collect" more money. If we discuss payment via text, is that enough? Or, do I just write something up on a piece of paper and have us both sign it? Getting it notarized seems like such a hassle, especially since he is doing me a favor. Also, I don't think he'd bring it to a body shop to get a quote, since it'd be paint damage more than anything, how do I figure out how much to give him? [link] [comments] |
3rd accident in two months, needing advice Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:46 PM PST 1st accident was my first ever (in my thirties) and was a fender bender (my fault) - supposedly I have accident forgiveness. No injuries in either side and my vehicle was the one damaged, the other far less significant. 2nd accident was a hit and run, cosmetic damage to my bumper, option to file that as uninsured. 3rd is where I am frustrated - driver turned into our lane (ours was solid green), stated he was uninsured and literally fled the scene, leaving his vehicle there. Cops agreed on site the geometry of the accident supported our claim (driver fleeing adds to it) but my insurance company is playing tango with this accident - whether it falls under collision (awaiting something from the police), uninsured, or if the police can pull anything from the registered vehicle. Questions are 1) is my premium going up 2)what exactly my insurance company is waiting on from the police before they proceed with repairs. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:22 PM PST So, I was sideswiped by a tractor trailer a few weeks ago in my 2006 Honda Accord (210k miles). It was during rush hour so we were going slowly enough so no one was injured. My Accord on the other hand, after speaking with the body shop, is totaled. All of the damage is to the body work and I'm pretty sure the car is structurally sounds to drive, minus a new tire that would be required. The tractor trailer company is handling the claim in house and has offered me the following:
What are my options at this point? I was hoping to purchase a Tesla Model 3, but that will not be ready for purchase until at least in the spring. How can I continue driving this vehicle until the Model 3 is ready while still getting some compensation for the damages? Also, is there any reason I should get my insurance involved at this point in time? [link] [comments] |
Dropped car insurance, pay the same total amount for other two cars? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:12 PM PST We have an old car that we don't really drive (it drives, but it's pretty broken, shakes/no AC etc, hasn't been driven in months). State Farm says we can drop collision and keep comprehensive on it (she called the policy suspended for that car but that doesn't really make sense to me as that means to me no payment no insurance- it still should be X amount. Potentially trying to sell it so don't want to cut insurance completely) - but since my under 25 brother was the assigned driver on it, he has to move to a different vehicle which would increase the rate from 600 to 900 for 6 months for that car. The collision insurance on the garaged car is about 300 so there is no difference for less coverage. I guess i don't know how this works and wanted to rant a bit. The other car is a newer car so I understand the risk would go up on that car and thus the "rate increase" but just seems unfair. [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice in complicated insurance situation Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:58 AM PST Background22 year old male driver that was recently involved in two accidents that were my fault. Right now I'm under my father's insurance plan, and they won't be renewing us this coming February because of me (whoops). So as for my car situation, I lease a Honda Civic with my twin brother, under which are both of our names (but his is the primary). We have collision and liability coverage and all that; fairly comprehensive.
Next StepsSo it looks like my options are to either shop around and stay on my dad's insurance, but basically double our payment, or for him to drop me and I go to find my own plan. However, I'm trying to find a solution that would (ideally) cost me the least, and I'm having trouble figuring it out mostly due to the fact that my brother and I share a car. My knowledge on car insurance is fairly limited, but (correct me if I'm wrong) collision and that type of coverage follows "the car", while liability and that type of coverage follows "the driver". Because of this, would it be possible for my brother to remain on my dad's insurance, covering his own liability and collision for the car, while I go off and find my own liability coverage and still drive our shared car?
Other ComplicationsTo make matters worse, our insurance coverage is based in New York where our parents live, but my brother and I recently moved to Massachusetts. Ideally, we'd rather not re-register our car and get hit again with taxes and whatnot, and I'm not sure if we could remain under our dad's plan if our car was registered in Massachusetts.
Sorry to throw so much at you guys, and especially a situation as complicated at this, but I really don't know what to do. Even if all my options are shitty and very limited, I'd still like to learn something from all of this, so any and all help would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Question about auto policy, directly related, same household, different policies. Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:50 PM PST So I asked my brother if I could drive his car to the grocery store, he talked about how since we are directly related under the same household and on separate policies that I would not be covered driving his car. Would I be covered under permissive use or would I have to be declared an authorized user or is verbal permission enough? [link] [comments] |
Help please, Need home owners insurance advice Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:04 PM PST Please help as I do not know what to do. Our home owners insurance state farm sent us a letter a few weeks ago saying they are dropping us because of a claim earlier this year that is still going on. The claim is an odd one as me and my girl friend who own the house went on a 3 week vacation to Ireland and my girl friends parents agreed to both watch our dogs and house, upon arriving home our house looked something like a scene from Project X, blood on walls, burn holes in carpet, cocaine residue in my 4 year olds room, they also managed to steal my car and put 1,000 miles on it. so we called police and filed insurance to help with cleaning and replacing carpet from burns etc. We used the contractors that state farm had come with them to our house to look at damage. They recommended painting the house, cleaning the air, (whole house smelled like weed and cigarettes) replacing damaged flooring and furniture and stolen items. Everything seemed to work out they put us in a hotel while they did the work and were very nice police were starting investigation etc. Only real issue was family problems, we found out it was in fact my girl friends 17 year old younger sister and her friends who partied and destroyed our home, also later finding out her dad knew this had happened and had been lying to us the entire time acting like he had no idea when it happened or who did it. Fast forward everything was good my agent informed me my insurance would be going up 10% but since I had never had a claim we shouldnt worry about being dropped. we just received a letter 2 weeks before Christmas stating we were being dropped and no one can give me an actual reason as to why, they go back to the overall amount being more than 40,000. We have talked to a bunch of insurance provider most deny us or give us a price of 2,000 a year or more when we have been paying 970. I am really looking for advice or anything please let me know, our insurance cancles on the first we have home and 2 full coverage car polices through them and they are only canceling the home but we will likely be looking to get all 3 bundled [link] [comments] |
Life Insurance - History of Drug Abuse Treatment Posted: 28 Dec 2017 12:39 PM PST I've been running into a couple problems getting life insurance and I'm looking for some advice on how to proceed. I'm a 28 year old male in good health. I'm a former smoker (pack a day for 4-5 years, quit 4.5 years ago). My parents are both living, my brothers are both living, all are in good health today. My mom had kidney cancer about 20 years ago, but is fine since. Here's the part that's been tripping me up. I have a history of treatment for drug addiction. I went to inpatient rehab in January 2012 and have been completely clean and sober from all drugs and alcohol since then. I was using opioids specifically Oxycontin, but I also dabbled some with cocaine, ecstasy, and pot. I've disclosed this on life insurance applications, as I don't think it's smart to lie and I've heard they can cancel the policy and I think they'll have access to my medical records anyway. I've been looking to get a $500,000 policy for a 10 year level term. One quote I got was for $70 per month. I thought that was expensive until the next quote was $340 per month. I understand why they'd be wary of insuring a drug addict, but I've been clean for 5.5 years. I'm involved in a 12 step program and attend meetings regularly. I'll take any drug tests I need to take. The quotes I was looking at before the underwriters saw my drug addiction treatment history were for $15-$20 per month. I expected to pay a little more, but figured I wouldn't pay have to pay a $50 per month premium with 5.5 years of sobriety. Any suggestions? Are there any companies that you'd recommend? Is there anything I can do? Or is this just what I need to pay? [link] [comments] |

My 2007 Corolla got hit by plow or other car; should I file a claim or try to sell as is? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:22 AM PST While driving from our home in NJ to visit family in MA last week we experienced inclement weather (snow & ice), which made driving on the small side roads near our destination in our 2007 Corolla very challenging. My wife and I decided to park the car and have a family member pick us up with his 4x4. Our 4 month old daughter was also in the car, and we didn't want to take any risk. When we came to pick up the car the next morning, it was damaged by likely another car or a plow overnight. I spoke with a Geico agent and they said this would be considered a 'not at fault' claim. I'm getting it inspected by a Geico rep next week. In the meantime, I got some preliminary estimates, and they are between $800 (off market fender and headlight and not fixing the scratches on the side of the car), to $3-4k (incl. fixing all minor scratches on bumper and side of the car). My question, how will this not-at-fault claim affect my premium and driving record? Besides one claim for vandalism (smashed window) that was reported to Geico by the police last year (which I paid out of pocket as it was less than the deductible), I've never filed a claim before. We're planning to sell or trade in the Corolla, and get an SUV type car since we have a kid. If we would sell the car (repaired), we would probably get around $3-4k for it (max), which could potentially be the same price as getting it repaired. I could also get it repaired for $800, not have the insurance pay anything, and sell the car with some minor cosmetic damage and likely getting slightly less for it. Note that my deductible is $500. Any suggestions are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
(Auto) Moving to Michigan, a "no-fault" state. Have a question about previous accident. Posted: 28 Dec 2017 07:55 AM PST Hi all, Thanks for taking the time to read and respond. As the title states, i am moving from illinois to michigan. 3 years ago and through no fault of my own, i was involved in an accident in Illinois. The insurance agent i am working with said that even though i was not living in Michigan and the accident did not happen in michigan, I am still on the hook for the increase in my premium because of the state being a no-fault state. Is this correct? Is there any information you could link me to in order to help confirm this? If it is true, is there literally anything i can do to get it reversed or a waiver of some sort? thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
