Micron Technology [$MU]/tech in general Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:35 PM PST There is a lot of speculation on /r/wallstreetbets that this stock is 'The Challenger' (the space shuttle that blew up), 'manipulated' because big money likes to see stockwits and wsb cry, etc. Humor aside, there are arguments that suggest that valuations and guidance make this stock a big bargain buy. I've been watching this thing climb since it was <$20 and know it has fuel for more based on P/E and more. Full disclosure: I sold -19 $42.50 and bought +19 $41.00 puts for Jan 19. Based on my trading outlook, I plan to sink in another $1400 into calls, but as LEAPs. Based on your outlook, is this short term play destined to doom? There is talk in WSJ of managers advising clients to exit or stay far away from tech. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:53 PM PST I'm mad at being the conservative type who for a while now has for himself identified a serious investment overhang. With these valuations, I just can't stomach going in on any asset class. Be it real estate, crypto currencies, stocks or commodities. Who else faces this dilemma? How do you deal with it? I'm finding myself feeling increasingly agitated... [link] [comments] |
Digital sales of video games will continue to increase in 2018 Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:52 PM PST Next year, the trend in sales of digital copies of video games will continue to grow and even accelerate. This improves the forecast for leading video game vendors ATVI, TTWO, and EA. This is due to the fact that the popularity of video games as entertainment is increasing. Young people prefer video games and activity on the Internet, rather than watching TV or reading books. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:38 PM PST Hi I live in the US and am needing to switch away from Just2Trade because I can't trade OTC. I want to invest in weed stocks and most of the companies are OTC in Canada. I really would like to keep fees low as well because that is why I was using Just2Trade in the first place. What is/are the best online broker(s) and what are the pros and cons. Also I heard about free ETFs with some brokers and that sounds amazing. [link] [comments] |

Changes coming to Vanguard's REIT index fund. Should I sell? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:41 AM PST Hello friends, Like many of you, I am invested in Vanguard's REIT index fund (ETF: $VNQ). It seems to have the lowest expense ratio out there, and like many of you I trust the Vanguard brand, so that's where I park my monies. Last month shareholders voted to change the composition of the Vanguard REIT fund away from being specifically in REITs into a broader approach that invests in all of Real Estate. You can read the changes here: https://about.vanguard.com/proxy/Summary.pdf Here's an article from Bloomberg that conveys these changes: "A $35 Billion ETF Is Making Changes That May Rile Fans of Yield" https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-09-12/vanguard-reit-etf-gets-a-new-index-but-nobody-knows-what-s-next In short, it seems like Vanguard wanted to diversify their REIT fund into real estate that isn't just REITs. So that would include a new 5% holding (soon to be the largest holding of the fund) in American Tower ($AMT), a company whose real estate is used for the communication industry (antennae and cellular tower sites). Or a new 3.5% holding of Crown Castle ($CCI) that also serves the communications industry. Anyways, this has got me struggling with my holding. This is because my REIT allocation is used for one particular purpose: diversification from typical stocks. I don't hold any other sector stocks like an Energy ETF or a Technology ETF. I divide up my portfolio strictly by large/small cap and domestic/international. That's it. Yet I made an exception for a REIT allocation, on the advice of smart people like Paul Merriman, who is part of the crowd who believes that REITs can serve to be a special slice of one's portfolio because of how uncorrelated they are with the rest of the market (see this Merriman graphic with the special REIT slice in purple: https://portfoliocharts.files.wordpress.com/2015/11/merriman-ultimate-asset-allocation.jpg). The problem is that the new version of Vanguard Real Estate fund seems like it will include a bunch of publicly traded stocks that aren't REITs. So it seems like it will have a new and unfortunate correlation with funds like the S&P 500, which is exactly what I was trying to avoid. What's the point of "diversifying" into a Real Estate ETF if it is just going to be another sector weighting, like people who add a slice of consumer discretionary or some other sector? Anyways, would love your guys thoughts. I think I read somewhere that Vanguard may create a "Real Estate II" fund that preserves the original REIT-only approach, so I'll probably switch to that if they do. Otherwise, I may have to move my funds to a non-Vanguard REIT fund -- unless you guys suggest otherwise. [link] [comments] |

How does a weak dollar impact investing the US stock market? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 05:29 AM PST How does a weak dollar impact how companies invest their capital? Does it affect certain types of companies more than others? [link] [comments] |
Help me understand the pros/cons of REITs. Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:36 AM PST So I will say first off that I'm looking at putting a REIT ETF into my IRA, so I understand the dividend/tax benefits of that. From what I've read, REITs seem like a "too good to be true" investment for those focused on income. Additionally, I saw this image recently that showed REITs outperforming all other asset classes over the long term. My main concern is I've read the dividends can be given as simply a return on capital--is there any way to see how often a REIT does that? I've also read conflicting statements on rising interest rates: A) It makes REITs take on more debt vs B) Rising interest rates is tied to a rising economy so more people will invest in RE. Would appreciate your insights, thank you. [link] [comments] |
What's going on with Canopy Growth Corp (TWMJF) (marijuana stock) that's making it so explosive? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 07:06 AM PST In 6 months TWMJF had a 350% gain. In the last 5 days it's gone up 40%. I'm not seeing any articles indicating what's happening exactly. Its main competitor Aurora Cannabis Inc (ACBFF) is seeing gains but nothing nearly as impressive. Info on ETFs located in Europe Posted: 29 Dec 2017 02:17 AM PST Like the title states basically, I can easily find a lot of information on ETFs in the US, like dividend rate, volume, etc. However, as I'm interested in also directly buying EU based ETFs, I did some searches and finding data is a lot harder. What are your go-to sites for EU based ETFs? The distributor's site itself? And are there any books/info-articles on the matter? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

How might Venezuela's oil struggles impact the industry? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 06:05 PM PST Venezuela seems to be having a lot of issues over the past few years and they look like they're getting worse. Anyone have ideas on how this may benefit other companies/countries? China is apparently suing the Venezuela Government over $60bil in unpaid loans so maybe China will claim their oil operations? Any worries of tax documents from brokerage A after transferring to brokerage B? Posted: 28 Dec 2017 09:02 PM PST So, I'm trying to transfer my stocks as the title states. My question is, after paying the fee and transferring all my stocks from broker A to broker B, are my tax worries now all embedded into broker B? Or do I have to go back to broker A eventually to receive documents to declare and pay taxes? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:44 PM PST I know you guys are a lot tougher on weed stocks so I think your input is valuable. I read this post on the company and would like to get your general take on it, I'm fairly new to stocks and don't know how to gauge or distinguish proper dd. Napkin Math Post This is a recent company presentation which was put out today. https://www.harvestone.com/_resources/presentations/corporate-presentation.pdf Full disclosure I own about 2000 shares and my gut feeling is holding this for a year or 2 will pay off, but I'd also like the opinion of people with a lot more experience then I have. FANG ETF's and Portfolio Management Posted: 28 Dec 2017 02:27 PM PST For those who do not know, FANG stands for Facebook, Apple, Netflix and Google. All of which are U.S. Tech Giants that have performed considerably well in the past few years. Since 2010, these companies have outpaced the S&P 500 by 50 to 100%. Meaning if the S&P averages 8-12% per year, these companies may average 16-24%. Instead of buying shares in each of these companies individually, is there a hedge fund or financial institution who will merge all of those into a single ETF? My tolerance for risk is a 7/10. Obviously the technology sectors have been doing incredibly well and this will not last forever. I personally believe that if the market reaches another correction, these company can and most likely will suffer far more than other sectors. The idea is to invest defensively and to create a safety net by betting on the U.S. economy. My portfolio would look like this: 50% (VOO) Vanguard S&P 500 ETF 45% FANG ETF 5% Gold ETF Any thoughts? Cheers from Florida! [link] [comments] |
