    ACS issues

    Posted: 11 Dec 2017 12:56 AM PST

Hey all, new on this subreddit, but you guys seem to be the place to go. So here's my issue:

I have a loan through ACS (/gasp right?) and I have been paying them faithfully for 8 years online with my bank account. About 6 months ago I got a notice in the mail that they attempted twice to charge my account and both were denied. My bank shows no record of this happening. As such the wonderful individuals at ACS locked me out of my ability to pay online.

I am military overseas and the location I am at does not allow me any other payment options. I try to visit their site and it shows up as a broken link, I cannot email them, and I cannot reach anyone by phone.

Does anyone have any advice for a way forward? As it stands I can't repay these people, and I don't want to default.

    thanks, TKT

Looking to refinance Sallie Mae loans with Citizen's Bank or SoFi

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 10:10 AM PST

So my Sallie Mae loans have relatively high interest rates and are variable (can scale up to 25% apparently -- seem to be increasing by ~0.5%/year). The total loans add to roughly $75,000 with interest rates close or at 10%. I just got a pretty good government job that will scale from ~$40,000 to ~$60,000 in two years. I also will roughly double my income a few months a year as I travel and work more. I'm just fairly ignorant on whether I should attack the loans as they are, refinance them and throw everything I earn at them (in order to fix the rates and lower them), or try to setup loan forgiveness. I understand the risks with the last option, but it may be a good option if I start throwing whatever I normally would've put extra on the loans in the stock market or my retirement.

    How do student loans work?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:21 PM PST

Just posted this to r/personalfinance but figured this would be a good place to post as well.

I'm 18, and starting my junior year of college in January. I have zero idea how student loans work in the sense of how they disperse them to you and what you get the money for. I know that I get about $4000 a year in pell grants and the tuition and fees at my school are around $7000 a year.

So, Im guessing they will give me the other $3000? But $3000 is not anywhere near enough for food, housing, textbooks, etc. and I don't plan on having a job this semester due to traveling-type stuff.

Can I ask to borrow more than what they give me? Or do they give me what they give me and thats it?

Will paying off my final loan hurt my credit score?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 12:53 PM PST

I'm on the last leg of $30k of loans. I read about credit mix and how having more credit with different places is a good thing (I think). Will paying off the final amounts of my loan decrease my credit score?

Lower monthly payment or lowest interest rate?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 01:41 PM PST

I am trying to refinance a loan to SOFI and was looking at my options but was unsure which one would be best. I can commit $1k each month to this loan repayment. Is it better to choose the lowest interest rate plan (highest monthly payment) or choose the option with the lowest monthly rate (but highest interest) plan? The difference in the monthly payments between the two is $250. I know the extra payment goes towards any accrued interest and then the rest of the principal. I am leaning towards the lowest interest rate, but I wanted to make sure. Thank you!

Under PSLF with 2 full time jobs: 1 job is nonprofit, the other is not. Will I still qualify?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 03:37 AM PST

I am 6 years into my PSLF payments with a nonprofit job. I am switching nonprofit jobs but there will be no break in payments or qualification. However, I was recently hired full-time for a corporate gig. I need the extra money, but I'm not sure how this will impact my PSLF plan. I have to report both jobs for taxes, but do I only need to inform my servicer about the non-profit work that is covered under PSLF?

I hope this question isn't too confusing.

Anyone with experience/luck finding private loans for an overseas school?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2017 02:20 AM PST

I'm from the US and looking for a loan for a direct enroll in a foreign univeristy (not study abroad program). Called a couple banks but they seem to only work with US universities or specific abroad universities that have a relationship with them already.

Anyone have experience with finding any loan of this nature? The school is located in Japan in particular, just in case.

    Thanks!
