Russia returns some troops to base in areas near Ukraine

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 12:59 AM PST

    Source: - https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-returns-some-troops-bases-areas-near-ukraine-report-2022-02-15/

MOSCOW, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Some troops in Russia's military districts adjacent to Ukraine are returning to their bases after completing drills, Russia's defence ministry was quoted as saying on Tuesday, a move that could de-escalate frictions between Moscow and the West.

Russia's Interfax news agency cited the ministry as saying that while large-scale drills across the country continued, some units of the Southern and Western military districts have completed their exercises and started returning to base.

Russia has amassed over 100,000 troops near Ukraine's borders, prompting fears of an invasion, especially as Moscow's Feb. 10-20 joint drills with Belarus mean that Ukraine is almost encircled by the Russian military.

Russian markets reacted positively to the news and the rouble , which has been under pressure due to fears of fresh Western sanctions in the event of a war, gained 1.5% shortly after the defence ministry announcement.

Although Moscow has denied ever planning to attack Ukraine, it has demanded legally binding guarantees from the United States and NATO that Kyiv will not be allowed to join the military bloc. Washington and Brussels have so far refused to make such pledges.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was expected in Moscow later on Tuesday to meet President Vladimir Putin in a high stakes mission to avert war.

    Why you shouldn't do anything rash . . .

    Posted: 14 Feb 2022 07:38 AM PST

On 1/18, my TD Ameritrade account stood at $$738,708.55 . . . Fast forward to 1/27, it was down to $607,251.84. Why is that? Simply put - I panicked.

Specifically, I sold 900 shares of COIN and 1450 shares of NVDA on 1/24. Big, big, big mistake, i.e., that same day, I could have gained (or cut my losses) by approximately $40 thousand dollars if I had waited near the end of the session to sell both of these equities. Better yet, I could have gone out to lunch and ignored the "noise" of the stock market and not sold either stock. My bad. My account was under $600k that day and essentially, I told myself that was a "line in the sand" that could not be crossed.

Fortunately, my story ends well? How is that? I made up for my stupidity/panic by buying AMD, KLAC, and MSFT - all at or near lows and equally important, before earnings. Consequently, my account stands at approximately $650k and was at $685,395 on 2/9 (before this Ukraine situation and inflation report was released Thursday and Friday). Consequently, I am confident I will be back to where I was back in mid January.

Moral of story? Patience is key or as this quote says, "Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear?" — Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

I know this has been asked before but I'm also 18 soon, interesting in investing, but I've been scrolling through this sub for an hour and I'm still lost. Please dumb it down for me.

    • I'm sorry for real I know this gets posted a lot, but I looked at other people asking how to get started but I'm still confused as hell and I feel like I'm trying to read a language I don't even understand.
    • Okay, so I get books on investing, I research, I learn. I get that.
    • But what books do you specifically recommend?
    • Are there specific websites/apps you recommend for trading? I've heard good and bad things about robinhood.
    • Why do people recommend compounding for young people?
    • Is investing really worth it? Like if you buy stocks but they go down is it possible to go in debt?
    • Why do some people say avoid day-trading?
    • Thank you to anyone who reads this and especially thank you to people who offer tips. It is appreciated.
    • Edit: Also, besides things you would advise, what you advise against? Like what are bad trading practices?
    • Last edit: I've said thank you so many times but seriously y'all, I know it's annoying a lot of newbies asking the same question but so many of you wrote such detailed responses and I am very grateful. A lot of you are also very kind. So for the millionth time THANK YOUUUU. I actually feel I understand a bit more now, and a lot of you worded things so well it felt like I was reading english again lol.

Here is a Market Recap for today Monday, February 14, 2022

    Posted: 14 Feb 2022 02:41 PM PST

    PsychoMarket Recap - Monday, February 14, 2022.

With everything going on in the market, enjoy this extra long recap :)

Stocks finished mixed in an extraordinarily choppy day as market participants digested escalating tensions stemming from the Ukraine/Russia situation and ongoing concerns over inflation and a potentially aggressive move by the. As a reminder, the Fed is currently meeting to discuss the interest rate.

    Markets Today

    • S&P 500 (SPY): -0.33%
    • Nasdaq (QQQ): +0.12%
    • Dow Jones (DIA): -0.40%
    • Russell 2000 (IWM): -0.35%
    • Lucid Motors (LCID): +6.19%
    • Block (SQ): +3.80%
    • Sea Limited (SE): -18.03%
    • Asana (ASAN): +11.53%
    • Dave (DAVE): -37.77%
    • Tesla (TSLA): -1.83%

Remarkably, tech stocks outperformed on the day despite the 10-year Treasury yield ticking over 2%. Rising Treasury yields hurt high-growth stocks the most because these companies require a lot of capital to fund their growth and expansion and generate most of their cash and earnings years down the road. Future cash decreases in today's dollars as rates increase partly because investors have more opportunities to earn bigger returns from assets paying higher interest and dividends right now. While higher yields are generally seen as a bet on a strengthening economic environment, it does make it more expensive to borrow capital, which weighs heavily on growth stocks, which are valued heavily based on future earnings projections.

Please keep in mind, I am by no means an expert of international relations and not claiming to be one. But since the Ukraine/Russia situation is affecting the markets, I will do my best to write about it.

The market has been whipsawed in recent session by headlines over the potential immediacy of a Russian invasion into Ukraine. Early in the day, Earlier, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he was urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to continue diplomatic talks. This came less than a day after U.S. officials signaled Russia could be nearing the launch of an invasion of Ukraine as soon as this week. National Security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN on Sunday that "a major military action could begin by Russia in Ukraine any day now," though the U.S. was still hoping for a diplomatic resolution. And these remarks in turn came after President Joe Biden held a phone call with Vladimir Putin on Saturday warning that the U.S. and its allies would "impose swift and severe costs" on Russia in the event of a military attack in Ukraine.

Moreover, the US is closing its embassy in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and relocating operations to Lviv, a town near the Polish border. In the most pressing development, the President of Ukraine said he was told the Russian invasion would commence on February 16.

Oil prices also built on recent gains. West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures jumped above $95 per barrel for the first time since 2014. U.S. crude prices have already jumped more than 20% for the year to date. With oil prices elevated, the S&P 500 energy sector has far outperformed the other major S&P 500 sectors for the year-to-date, climbing more than 26% versus the broader market's 7% drop.

Hard to know what to think or make of this situation, just making sure you are informed.

In economic news, Federal Reserve held a meeting today to discuss the interest rate. This comes after the Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped 7.5% year-over-year, the fastest pace of inflation since 1982.

    https://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/boardmeetings/20220214closed.htm

Energy prices remained a key contributor to the overall CPI and were up by 27% on a year-over-year basis in January. Within energy, fuel oil prices jumped 9.5% on a monthly basis, after the price of crude rallied to a seven-year high earlier in the week. Electricity prices also jumped by a pronounced 4.2% on a month-over-month basis.

Gains in prices for food also contributed to the headline index, like dining at home and out each became more expensive. Food at home prices rose 1% during the month, while food away from home prices rose 0.7%.

Excluding more volatile food and energy prices, the so-called core CPI rose by 6.0% in January over last year, also marking the biggest jump since 1982. The core CPI had risen by 5.5% in December.

The price of shelter, which is another major contributor to inflation, rose 0.3% on a monthly basis. In turn, this led to a 0.5% increase in rent prices, which have risen alongside home prices as potential buyers are priced out and forced to rent. Prices for lodging away from home, however, dropped by 3.9% on a monthly basis in January, as the Omicron surge at the beginning of the year dampened mobility and demand for hotels and other stays.

Larry Adam, Chief Investment Officer of Raymond James said, "Conflict in Ukraine could actually build the worst-case scenario for the Fed, in the sense that you could see energy prices move higher, [and] if you start to see gasoline prices go north of $4 per gallon, I think that could crimp consumer spending. And then obviously, if energy prices go higher, that could lead to further inflationary pressures. And that could be a double-edged sword that the Fed could be challenged by."

Later this week, investors are set to receive another batch of earnings results from companies including Airbnb (ABNB), DoorDash (DASH), Walmart (WMT), and Roku (ROKU). Economic data reports will include the Commerce Department's January retail sales report, which is likely to show sales rebounded in January after dipping in December.

    Serious,but unsure question

    Posted: 14 Feb 2022 11:12 AM PST

Can retail investors buy enough shares of a small company to completely take it over and own it?

For example, I'm in OGI and they have 310 million outstanding shares. If enough people were to buy and hold half of that, would we as a group become the soul voting power of the company?

Or is that not a possibility when buying direct from a broker?

In the interest of hitting my minimum character account, I hope you all had a great weekend and if you watch the game I hope you had a good time! I appreciate any feedback above and wish you all a great monday!

    How does VIX futures work?

    Posted: 15 Feb 2022 12:46 AM PST

So, I've been doing some small-sized moves on VIX Futures and although they move similarly to VIX itself, I see there are some differences.

For example, VIX was up like 10% yesterday yet the futures didn't break +5%. Now VIX is down less than 1% from yesterday yet futures are down like 5%.

I see that the movements are very similar to each other, meaning if VIX goes UP then so do futures and vice-versa, but given that the prices are never exactly the same and since the movements are not always the same, what am I missing? Does it work similarly to any other commodity where volume and sentiment affect the prices together with VIX itself?

    Thank you!

    Morning Update for Monday, 2/14/22

    Posted: 14 Feb 2022 06:15 AM PST

Good morning everyone, happy Valentine's Day <3

Just the watchlists this morning, late night.

These posts are for informational purposes only. I am not a financial advisor.

    Main Watchlist:

    Gapping UP:

    • SPLK
    • CNR

    Gapping DOWN:

    • BNTX
    • MRNA
    • AFRM
    • SE
    • NET
    • NIO
    • PTON

    Momentum Watchlist:

    • BDSI
    • ASAX

    Market Outlook:

Stocks are looking to open lower to start the new week. Two main bearish influential factors at play: the escalating threat of Russia invading Ukraine, and the Fed tightening financial policy to address inflation. For the overall markets, invasion could cause more volatility. Some analysts believe crude oil could skyrocket if Russia do invade. If energy prices continue to rise, it could accelerate inflation even more. I'm still bearish, and think valuations will come down further.

S&P Futures are down ~30 basis points, Dow Futures are down ~20 basis points, and Nasdaq Futures are down ~40 basis points. Gold and silver are seeing relative strength at the moment. Gold could approach the 1,900 level over the next week or so, I'm bullish here. Crude oil is trading a bit over $92 per barrel. Currently pulling back a bit from the highs it reached, but still trading well over 90. Energy stocks are trading slightly lower after we saw most push through to 52-week highs last week. Tech stocks are under pressure and could see more selling off today. Valuations have been lofty here for some time; with the Fed forced to raise rates, the valuations definitely have some room to come down. Airlines and cruise stocks are mixed at the moment. Daily charts looking bearish after the selling off that we saw on Friday.

The crypto market is trading slightly higher after an uneventful weekend. Bitcoin is currently trading around 42,500, still hovering around a support level. Ethereum is trading a bit over 2,900. Crypto-related stocks are trading slightly lower in premarket trading.

Remember to use proper risk management; size appropriately for your account and have a plan for every trade you enter. Happy trading everyone :)

    Random Stocks Update

    Posted: 14 Feb 2022 03:53 AM PST

So a couple of days ago I posted a video analyzing what would have happened if you bought 100 random stocks one year ago. And I had a small sample size due to it taking extremely long to manually generate random stocks. I am writting this because I have completed the program that I was writing in python. It lets me select as many random stocks as I want out of 8352 stocks listed on the NASDAQ, NYSE and AMEX, then it shows me the yearly percantage change for each stock and the combined average change. I have also included option to generate random stocks out of 1000 most valuable stocks and certain sectors such as Basic Industrials, Capital Goods, Consumer Durables, Consumer Non-Durables, Consumer Services, Energy, Finance, Health Care, Miscellaneous, Public Utilities, Technology and Transportation. I have also added 1 year average stock price chart for the generated random stocks.

I am planning to make a video about it, so if there are any specific samples you would want to see (for example 69 random stocks out of Technology stocks) or the whole code that lets me do that. Let me know down in the comments.
