I want to buy my place of employment but I'm clueless on how to bring it up to the owner.

I currently work for a vaping retailer. We currently operate two stores in a major city of roughly 2 million and sell mainly vape supplies and CBD/D8 products. I have worked for the company for almost 2 years and I am still the most recent hire.

The business was started 9 years ago by a guy who secured the funding from his father (who is now 83 years old) and has since washed his hands of the entire operation and left his father to run things for the last 5+ years.

Currently the structure looks like this: 83 year old owner, General manager (8 years seniority), Assistant manager (myself), 5 regular counter workers.

GM usually handles all inventory related procedures with our owner and vendors while I handle the front end aspect (employees and customers relations) and I usually handle all bank runs and errands due to GM not having a DL or vehicle.

I have a background in business management. I owned and operated a successful landscaping company for 4 years before deciding I had enough of working in the hot sun 65 hours a week. I also was the GM of a longstanding Italian restaurant in which over the course of 5 years business increased by over 35% from when I took over.

I have access to the numbers behind the busniess and after months of consideration I've decided I want to attempt to buy the company. The owner (considering he's 83) is always talking about retiring and wanting to spend more time at home so I figured it has the possibility to be a win win for both parties.

Pretty much just looking for some general advice on how to approach the situation and what some of the first steps of acquiring a business would be. I don't know if initial capital down would be required. A certain percentage for a set amount of time, or a predetermined percentage until an agreed upon amount is met would be the ideal scenario.

Does this kind of thing ever happen? Am I just day dreaming too big perhaps?

    Thank you in advance.

    Applicant refused zoom interview?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:34 AM PST

edit: I also offered to do it in person (noted in OP but many seem to have missed it)

Entry level store/warehouse job, team of 15 people

Since there's no specific qualifications, the entire hiring decision comes down to their personality and gauging how they'd fit in with the team. I like to do video interviews and feel like we're having an actual conversation -- get to see their expressions/responses and whatnot.

He insisted on a phone interview. I doubled down on video, but said in person was fine as well. He once again asked why I wouldn't do a phone interview. Instead of arguing I just moved on to the next applicant.

Is it really that unreasonable to want to look at the person I might be hiring? I also felt like if they weren't willing to accommodate my interview preferences beforehand, they'd be difficult to work with.

Someone left a negative, one star review with a photo of a different restaurant.. what to do?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:09 AM PST

Someone left a one star review with complaints on the food. However with the photo they added, it was definitely a different restaurant, not ours. How do I go about with replying to review, if I do, and is there a way I can have it removed?

I thought about leaving a calm review on how the photo shown is not our place as our restaurant does not have the table set up or food that was in the photo. I actually know the exact place that is in the photo too.

When you fire an employee how much information about reason for the dismissal do you share with the other employees?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:37 PM PST

    Background:

I manage a retail store with a deli. I just fired someone because I caught them stealing two days ago, a small item. The person worked for me for 6 years. Last year I heard a rumour that this person would check out items and not scan all of his items. He was working in concert with a cashier (who has since been fired for pocketing money from sales). I was never able to verify whther this was true or not.

I just couldn't trust him anymore so I didn't think I had much choice. It wasn't his proficency, just his honesty, and I can't change someone to become more honest. How do you guys handle this with the other employees? Do you share the real reason or do you remain tightlipped?

What are your complaints with them if any and how do you (or would you if you had the means) go about getting your voice heard?

Taking control of Google reviews account in my name, but run by my employer

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:48 PM PST

    Good evening,

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this so I apologize in advance if it is not. If there is a better place for this type of post, please let me know. I am a physician and work for a private practice. We are coming to the end of the relationship, which is fairly mutual at this point. I have built up a very solid reputation with regards to reviews on google over the last couple of years that I don't want to lose. Interestingly, when you search my name, the account that comes up is "my name, MD". It does have a link to my employer's website, but really not much else by my employer. The marketing department handles responding to reviews, so I know they have control over the account. What I'm wondering is, when the time comes for me to leave in maybe 6 months or so, is there a way for me to claim that this is my account and take control of it? You can argue that they were responsible for setting it up, but it is all under my name and the reviews are all for me and not the practice. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of thing. I would really like to carry these reviews over to whatever practice I join next. Thank you in advance for any advice on this matter.

TL;DR: Planning on changing physician practices in about 6 months and want to take my google reviews with me as opposed to letting the current practice delete them.

Should I get an LLC if I profit less than 1k annual?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:30 AM PST

I have a small business where I sell things I make in my apartment. I had an LLC at one point but haven't renewed. I make less than 1K in sales annual (hopefully that changes) and plan on opening an online shop that I can attach to Instagram to boost sales. Is it worth forming an LLC at such low profit?

Have any of these AI Writing Assistants been tried?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:32 PM PST

I'm a HORRIBLE writer and proofreader. I have a lot of ideas, but I have a habit of writing in run-on phrases. This makes sending letters and blog posts extremely tough for me, as well as possibly humiliating. I'm looking at all of the many AI-assisted writing software options and was hoping to hear from anyone who has firsthand experience with any of them. There are so many to choose from, and I'd appreciate some advice on which ones to try first. I've also tried Jenni, which appeared to be promising at first but rapidly became unusable due to bugs after only a few activities.

Here's a list of services that may be used as a starting point for anyone interested in learning more about what I do.

    SmLLC vs MMLLC, info/help

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 09:56 PM PST

My Terminology might be off; be gentle, but correct me where I'm wrong

I'm in the midst of understanding/resolving my personal credit issues and want to make sure that while creating my first LLC, I wont get myself in a questionable jam when it comes to establishing business credit.

When taking a look at creating an EIN with the irs, as the primary owner of my business, its classified as a Single member. Which I understand. But its then a disregarded entity that makes its reflect on my personal taxes.

Will that mess with anything in the long run as I want to go ahead and create my EIN for account age before starting with my dnb business credit?

My personal credit is effected by medical Bill's that I'm looking to resolve as soon as possible and dont want to jam myself up in the future by having my business tied to my personal. Or will it??

    Help me understand.

Getting mixed up, second guessing myself

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 09:46 PM PST

Apologies if formatting is wonky, on my phone and first time posting here.

I've been second guessing myself so need some clarification on cash basis.

Cash basis = recognizes revenues when cash is recieved, and expenses when they are paid correct?

"Received" as in deposited in the bank right?

I've had my business for 2 years making about $2-3k per month. I've been writing myself a check from my business and depositing it on the last day of the month to my personal account as my Owners' Draw. Let's say I get $100 on the 31st and deposit it same day, that $100 is included in the draw regardless of if it is pending in the bank. I do set aside income monthly for taxes, so obviously not all of the 100 is in the draw. The draw is normally actually in my personal bank in the first few days of the month, but since it's deposited on the 31st it's counted that month it's deposited.

Am I doing this correctly? I've been seeing conflicting info...

Do I need to register a business to accept payments in my small SaaS?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:55 PM PST

Payment infrastructure like Paddle and Stripe requires customers to verify their business. Isn't it trivial that I should register all my applications that don't even found a product-market-fit yet?

There are millions of small businesses/apps that accept payments, does it mean they all are registered businesses?

    I don't think so.

What am I missing guys? what's the real point here?

    sanity check

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 08:20 PM PST

have a fast moving sale. we don't have a deposit/discovery period. the buyer is an employee. nothing has been signed or deposited. I provided them the closing docs to review and comment. offices now closed, but the attorney said he'd include a clause that I can walk out any time indidnt see it in the paperwork and the closing is expected to complete in one evening. am I somehow on the hook for backing out of the deal if something goes wrong between now and the signing? I made clear that I provided the docs for review and comment. never have I gone through such a quick deal.

    Consulting an attorney

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 06:09 PM PST

I have a business decision to make where I think consulting an attorney would be prudent.

If you have an attorney who functions in this as needed capacity to make recommendations to your business, how did you find them? What level of accessibility do you get for answering questions? What do you pay?

Any other input or things I should consider as I approach this?

I had an awful time finding a CPA that works for us, and my first choice turned out to be an expensive mistake for us. Hoping to not repeat the same mistake here.

FOR THOSE THAT ACTIVELY BUILT CREDIT FROM NO CREDIT HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO GET A 700, 750, AND 800 (IF APPLICABLE)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:48 PM PST

I want to get an idea of how fast I can expect my score to increase to fund a business. If you remember, what was your credit mix. Please mention it if you had the following:

    • any missed payments
    • higher utilization (above 10%)
    • many inquiries (above 4 over 2 years)
    • was an authorized user

Also if you used a rent reporting service to build credit did it help with credit card approvals (few credit issuers pull FICO and many FICO scores exclude rent reporting)

Which cards give the highest initial limits for Very Good/Excellent credit (+740)?

Should I expect a higher credit from a business loans or multiple high limit credit cards?

Do we need project management software?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 01:28 PM PST

So, I manage a small (but growing!) historic preservation shop, we specialize in restoring antique windows. The other workers and I are buying the business and transitioning it to a worker co-op (from the owner who we see once a month at most). At this point it's just three of us doing the restoration work and none of us have any sort of business training.

The three of us are at about the same skill level and as such each take on our own stream of work. So three jobs running simultaneously is the goal, with each project taking about 6 weeks. The only hiccup is my workload. I'm visiting potential clients, writing proposals, doing the invoicing, customer relations, inventory, scheduling, building maintenance...juggling all the manager things... balls get dropped and I don't have time for my stream of actual work.

I'm really good at selling things and pricing but terrible at scheduling and inventory. Also I miss doing the work and spending all my time on nonbillable labor is taxing financially. Fortunately, one of my shopmates is good at organizing and inventory, and the other is good at scheduling and customer relations. We are trying to figure out the best way to get them started with these new responsibilities since none of us have experience setting up these sort of systems. I have my own weird methods cobbled together over the years but multi-colored cells in a spreadsheet for scheduling with improperly spelled client names, and random, illegible sticky-notes for inventory is far from systematic.

How would you approach this, especially the scheduling part?

The project management apps I've tried seem to be tech-focused with way more stuff than we will ever need. I mean, almost all of our jobs follow the same steps and timeline. We just need an easy to modify way to lay out our work streams so that we are not getting bottlenecks, and can see when customer payments and deposits are arriving to project our income.

    Confectionary Productivity Sheet Tracking

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:05 PM PST

    Hi There-

We're in confectionary manufacturing and I wanted to get a better handle on how productive our employees are- of course, there is a pretty big range, as we are human...

Thinking of creating a sheet for folks to fill in during and toward the end of each shift- I have tried to go totally digital but I find that this is tricky- not everyone is even a bit tech savvy, and I do have concern about accidentally deleting files/information.

    Here's one idea:

    Name

    Date (dd/mm/yy)

    Task (Product Made)

    # units completed

    Lot # for units

    Waste from Production

    Start Time

    End Time

Clean Up (Start time, end time)

As a table, where two people could fill out the sheet for their shift (not sure how to copy/paste the table here, but essentially, it would be in 'Landscape' view, have those points above as table column headers, and then two rows of cells underneath where each employee could fill out their data for the day- hopefully that makes sense.

Also- while I am at it (though, rather unrelated)- I'd rather not be the only one who cleans the bathroom. But it feels weird for me to implement my staff to do this, as it really isn't a 'core production task'. How weird is this of me to feel, how can I get over it- what has been your experience?

    Thanks!
