Should I sue my college? (Canada, Ontario)

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 12:04 AM PST

I've been enrolled in this college for about 4 years in their accounting diploma program (as well as another degree program). They had branded the accounting program to fulfill the CPA PREP equivalent courses, however, upon further consultation with CPA Ontario, I have been told otherwise. I reached out to my college, and they removed the webpage containing the CPA logo/brand with the CPA equivalent courses and failed to respond to me for over 2 weeks. I was then contacted by the associate dean, who then proceeded to gaslight/blame me but never acknowledged how that webpage could mislead people. I do not know what to do in this situation. I tried to keep this short; but any advice would help, thanks!

Do you ever feel like some accountants make excel spreadsheets too complicated?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 12:36 PM PST

    Does KISS mean anything? Lol

Maybe I don't know excel that well and maybe someone was just showing off.

Also having messed with power BI at my previous employer I'm always telling myself "I could make this automatic with power bi" >.>

Do partners know what they’re doing or are the bullshitting like the rest of us?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 06:07 AM PST

I'm in year 5. Supervisor status and I still don't know wtf I'm doing. I've got a feeling partners just act like they know what they are doing. When they give guidance they just sound confident in what they're saying, making everyone around believe them.

Where can I go with 2 years in Public?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 02:40 PM PST

I landed a job at a small CPA firm right after college. Pay is terrible but I thought it would be best for learning purposes. It will be 2 years in here after season ends. I'm currently working on my CPA license (short a few units but I will take my first section in April/May, based in California).

So far, I've been doing Payrolls, Bookkeepings, Sales Tax, Individual Tax Returns, simple S-Corp Tax Returns, and a few other miscellaneous things on the way. I'm planning to leave around July/August. What position/or where should I aim for? What salary range? This was my first job after college and don't really have anyone to go for advice to be honest.

I think it would be kind of a waste to leave without getting my CPA but the pay is terrible and prices are going up. I heard I can still validate my hours even if I left, but not too sure about that. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Anyone jump from senior at larger firm to a manager at smaller firm? Experience? Thoughts?

Worried about a new job after the first week

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 12:58 AM PST

I just started a new job this week, pivoted out of my old one for a 20% raise with substantially better benefits, however I've seen some things at the new company that I'm not sure if they're a red flag or not, and I could use some perspective. This is pivoting from one industry position to another, my prior position was a standard 9 to 5 position

    • In my two years at my previous position I think I worked a total of 40 hours OT and it was always replaced with extra days off. New job this seems to be the standard for monthly close for multiple people to be working OT for the first 10 days of the month to get to close. This week the Assistant Controllers and Controllers were working until about 1 am and some of the accountants worked until 11 pm
    • Our main work paper for close is our balance sheet reconciliation. It has been allegedly reworked twice in the past 6 months and it is now locked so that accountants can only input data. This is due to people previously there hardcoding numbers. However, being unable to see the formulas makes it a pain to do.
    • There seems to be a fairly cliquey culture, out of a approx. 20 person department 6 of them have been there for 3-6 years, the rest have started in the past 6 months.
    • There is little to no documentation for when actual work is done. For example, journal entries, are just book them, but you don't need to provide any sort of invoice, bill, or GL backup to them
    • The assistant controllers and controller seem to view themselves as not accountants (wtf?) and they don't really know how the daily ins and outs of the job work and instead rely on checking the senior accountants' work against other accountants' work to determine if items are booked correctly.
    • There is no time clock as it's a culture of "not-clock watchers" but this seems to translate more as a work more than necessary than a work until the work is actually done
    • I was told I was hired as part of growth, but after speaking to some seniors, it turns out I was hired as a replacement, this does not sit well with me at all as it's a lack of transparency.
    • Honestly this may be my biggest grievance, but it seems like the work is a major step back. Instead of doing monthly analyses of various GL accounts, bank reconciliations, and monthly projects; this role instead requires me to do daily operational accounting such as recording all bank transactions, approving invoices, working on customer ledgers, and other daily operational items. I'm not trying to say I'm above this work, but I've never done this type of work before, and it's kind of crazy to me that they're paying all of this money for higher level accountants to do this instead of AP, AR, treasury specialists.

I'm not sure if I'm overreacting because it's a new role, or if I'm looking at it all in a negative light, but I'm starting to feel like I may have been catfished by this role and would like some sort of reality check if anyone would be willing to provide one.

    Thank you

2 months in as a staff associate in tax…asking questions can be scary

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 11:21 PM PST

I for the most part can understand what's going on. Prior year returns/work papers are a god send.

Asking questions can be a little scary. I don't want to come off like I don't know anything or I'm under qualified.

If I'm at least hanging in there, am I doing a good job as a new guy?

What is the expected salary range in NYC for a first year accountant?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 07:24 PM PST

I'm in the accounting program just started. I'm curious though. What is the expected salary range for a staff accountant in NYC?

I live in NJ maybe 15 min away from the city and would make the commute. I'm hoping others here work in NY and can give me some insight into their salary. I plan on also getting my CPA right after getting my bachelor's. Thank you in advance!

For those in government/industry working in Budget/Finance Analyst type positions - what's it like compared to public?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2022 04:01 AM PST

I've been thinking about leaving public this year (senior at a small firm) -.a lot of the positions/industries I'm looking at that are of interest to me are things like "Senior Finance Analyst", etc., that I do qualify for but I don't have a lot of budget experience which would be a key part of these positions.

For those that work in positions like this - what's it like? Work life balance is key to me - I'd really like to put in a good 9-5 most days with rare overtime.

Does your employer provide a work laptop or do you use your own (for remote)?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2022 07:08 AM PST

For those of you that work remotely (especially those that were specifically hired that way and not just currently temporarily working from home), were you sent a work laptop or do you have to use your own?
