How to get motivated again? I keep going through stages of intense motivation, coming up with ideas, researching non-stop etc. And then I almost hit a brick wall and all I wanna do is play video games. Any tips on how to avoid this or is anyone else in a similar situation?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 10:16 AM PST

The title pretty much sums it up, weeks of extreme motivation then followed by weeks of laziness!

Edit - just writing to thank you all for the responses, I think it's time to work on myself and my mindset. Potentially even selling my gaming equipment lol. All the best to you guys!

Another edit - this post has some high quality information on it, really glad I asked this question. Will be saving this post and reading it everyday until I gain the discipline I need.

Has anyone sold part of their business to a client?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 02:00 PM PST

I have a SMM agency that has 70% of its business coming from one bigger a agency who subcontracts to me. We do SMM, they do marketing in general and are about 10x the size of us, but don't have a specific SMM wing. They also occasionally send me leads they cannot deal with directly instead of sub contracting.

We work very closely and I had a call with them today where they mentioned they were interested in purchasing a stake of the company.

I would be interested in that because they have more like 50 employees and probably 20-30x the revenue that I do, and my services could be sold to all of their clients. In 2021 I brought in roughly 400k in annual revenue and take home about 300k profit.

I am wondering if anyone has done this and whether or not this would be a good thing to explore. I would be taking a hit on the profitability to access a wider range of clients and grow the business. What things do I need to consider?

Founded a SaaS startup 15 months ago, did mid 6 figures in revenue. Burnt out now and not really excited about the product, any advice?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 09:48 AM PST

    Hey Guys,

I founded a SaaS in the Podcasting and Audio space and scaled it to 10k+ users, the process was very difficult yet very rewarding since I was completely broke when I started out, and building a SaaS that would take at least $50k to build was hard.

For the last few months I've been extremely burnt out and have been thinking about selling on MA or something.

I'm not really super excited and passionate about the problem we're solving anymore.

But there's something that tells me that I shouldn't sell and everyday that goes by feels like a chore tbh

Any advice from someone who's been in a similar situation?

    Need Help Getting First Client

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 11:31 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I have an artificial intelligence business where we build APIs that automate boring repetitive business practices, for example, generating invoices, data entry, scanning documents, reading, and inputting them into a form or excel, transcribing, and more things like that.

However, it seems like everyone I reach out to via email that is specifically looking for these tasks are only looking for employees to do this even though our solutions are cheaper and more accurate. Also I get no responses on my emails from high level executives at companies. What can I do to actually get clients or even get a meeting with someone either locally or out of state?

    Thanks

Seeking Advice - Strategies Buying A Family Business

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 11:37 AM PST

Topic: How can I buy a family business?

    The scenario:

My aunt and uncle have been operating a pumping business in Florida for several decades and recently began discussing retirement. Throughout this period, I have had the privilege of observing their successes and failures as business owners, which ultimately inspired me to open my own business, which I recently closed due to my partner's retirement.

Lately, my relatives have been talking a great deal about selling the business especially after they recently lost their lead employee. My aunt called to talk about it this afternoon, and I could plainly see they're growing tired. Their pumping business has served them incredibly well for many years affording them what I would consider a rather lavish lifestyle. Most impressively, they don't even advertise and have held onto their existing commercial contracts for several decades. Their primary source of revenue is pumping restaurant grease traps and disposing at a spreading site. I've often questioned them about whether disposing of their liquid waste is their best option, or if they're potentially overlooking an opportunity to recycle their grease given the growing market for biofuels. They've become set in their ways and really don't care much to change anything. Based on what I know about the way they're running things, adding new contracts and potentially a new revenue stream could seriously turn this business into something special.

    Proposition:

I've been considering offering to work for them to fill the void their lost employee left provided we have an understanding that I would like to ultimately buy it. Frankly, I suspect that they've considered asking me, but have refrained out of consideration for my ongoing affairs. My personal wealth is limited (75k), which has me thinking it's probably not a viable idea for either of us. I have no idea what their business would be valued at, nor do they, but I've heard my aunt previously say that they're hoping to sell for something like 500k-1M - she likes to talk a lot.

    Advice?:

Can anybody share their experiences buying out a business? Am I crazy for even thinking this could actually be possible? I'm somewhat familiar with LBO's and seller financing, but perhaps there is an option that makes more sense?

What's the online equivalent of starting a landscaping/painting/construction business?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 12:12 PM PST

By that, I mean a business where there's always demand, you just gotta be willing to do the work and have the skills.

I suppose if I had to guess, I'd say website building is one such example. Copywriting too.

    Anything else?

    First time having the “fire”

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 02:12 PM PST

Started a 20 month IT school 7 days ago. Currently I'm doing the comptia A+ certification. Now when I started 7 days ago I knew 0%. Absolutely jack in IT besides how to work a phone and basic computer functions. In these 7 days I've learned faster, better, and even retained more. Than I have in my whole life. Every last acronym I come across becomes permanent memory on first site. Including whatever functions said acronym might have. So to test my knowledge I took both comp tia practice tests (A+ 220-2001 A+ 220-2002). I got a 92% on the 2001 and 71% on the 2002. I'm in a half state of disbelief and the other half is nothing but raw determination. There's an internal battle raging in my head. I feel somewhat crazy because of it. I've always been an under achiever in life. Skated by the literally skin of my teeth. Then to go to this after the professor gives 1 lecture about his past students and what they've gone onto accomplish. Simply and as quick as flipping a light switch. So yea that's where I'm at in life. Hopefully I'm not alone in this feeling.

Lessons from importing our first shipment

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 08:27 AM PST

After months, shipment #1 is finally at our warehouse and ready to ship!

Getting a product ready to ship to customers takes more steps than I expected (sort of like everything in building a business... Which makes it super rewarding). It feels incredible to have months of work finally come to fruition.

For background: my partner and I invented + patented a new product (portable blackout curtains), launched a successful Kickstarter in the summer, and have been working to get our order here since. Like everyone else, we were hit by the supply chain crisis, so we did everything we could to speed things up. We decided to split our first production order into two LCL shipments instead of one FCL.

Before our order was on the ocean, I had lots of calls with people who had experience in logistics and supply chain to try and understand what to expect once our product got here. I knew the flow was something like:
    🚢 → port → customs → rail → warehouse → 📦
But wanted to learn more about each of those steps. While each of the calls I had revealed bits and pieces, I knew we'd have to figure a lot of it out for the first time when our shipments finally got here.

We have FOB terms with our manufacturer, so they were responsible for shipping the order to the exit port, loading it onto the vessel, clearing exit customs, and providing exit paperwork. So that part of the process went smoothly. (We did have extra cost unexpectedly at the origin port due to 'LCL handling charges').

On this side of the ocean we've learned so much! I could study this forever but it wouldn't have compared to just importing for the first time.

    What we've learned:

    • Have the commercial documents (commercial invoice and packing list) ready to send to the customs team just before the vessel arrives so they can clear the shipment at customs
    • There are actually two warehouses: the freight forwarder's warehouse, where the containers are sorted and destuffed(unloaded), and then our warehouse, where we ship from
    • We are responsible for scheduling the delivery between those two warehouses, and the earlier we do, the better
    • There is more paperwork at every step (we use Airtable to keep it organized)
    • Following up with the freight team a LOT is uncomfortable, because it really helps keep things moving, and awesome warehouse teams make everything easier.

With these lessons in mind, our shipment #2 should be arriving this week, and it should go pretty smoothly! We were preselling inventory while our vessels were on the water, but have now sold out of stock and are shifting to build up to a January 19 "in stock" event on our website.

Just feels so cool for this all to finally be happening, and my god do you learn new skills by getting out there and doing this yourself. A lot of learning to make this happen. If anyone else is dealing with the supply chain struggle - happy to speak with you!

Getting my first paying client was one of my favorite experience as an entrepreneur, and it started my interest in growth, sales and marketing in my business (physical therapy). It seems scary at first, but not as hard as I thought. Here's 2 tips how I got my first clients.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 04:24 AM PST

Getting your first new client feels kinda like the the rite of "real" entrepreneurship - after all, if clients dont buy, its either the product/service isnt valid or wanted, isnt it?

Definitely one of the earlier memorable moments for me when i first started out

That being said, it can be scary for new entrepreneurs because getting a new client is scary enough, asking them to pay you is another.

Here are 2 tips to get your first clients:

Concentrate On Max 2-3 Services or Packages

Ever entered a restaurant with more than 30+ items on the menu?

Yeah, it'd be overwhelming and make it harder to choose...and you'd wonder if they can do them all well.

That's why, choose just 2-3 max offers which you can do pretty damn well with good margins.

This also has the benefit of

    • making you look and sound more specialized and professional
    • and more importantly, makes it easier for your clients to make a buying decision

For example, in my main business, the top 2 services are physical therapy and hand therapy (those account for >90%+ of entire sales; followed with massage, TCM, alternative therapy).

So most of my sales and marketing will front load physical therapy and hand therapy.

Even within physical therapy, there are more common injuries and problems such as spine (back and neck) versus knee pains

Use Soft Launch Offers & Beta Testers

You can offer a limited slots of "discounted price for early users" eg first 3-5 clients to thank them for being the early supporters, and announce this offer to your direct relationships (friends, family, colleagues) as well as social media.

A simple offer like this can look like this: "I'm launching X service, and I'm going to work with 3-5 people at this discounted price point before I put the price up to the full price, and I would love for you to be one of them".

Once you put out this offer, you'd get 4 types of replies:

    1. some (or lots of) rejections or ignores or some trolling
    2. some inquiries which turn to nothing
    3. some inquiries that will take your 5-slot beta user offer
    4. some inquiries that will miss your soft launch offer and become full private paying clients

From here, if your product isnt popular, then you'd hear crickets (nada), or if it's okay you may get at least 1 beta user. If it's popular maybe 2-5+ clients.

Once you get your first client, it'd be a big confidence boost, and then you can go on to get your second, third, fifth, tenth, hundredth client and on and on

Start with landing your first client first =)

    Best,

    Nigel

How to acquire clients for my SaaS company?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 12:27 PM PST

Hello, I have recently started a software development company. We are simply building software for others and provide the service to monitor and support it. The idea came around when one of my friends got a paid request to do some coding and brought me and an another guy in on the idea. We have a vast coding experience, however we are not sure how to acquire clients and where to seek for them.

For now we have created a website (https://parlour.dev, it's in Polish, because we are currently aiming for this client segment, as it is easier to manage taxes locally, but we plan to eventually expand to foreign markets). And tried to look for people that might be interested in our networks, but that hasn't been working out to well.

I've done some research and I believe that there is a great segment of clients wanting to pay someone to build their web / mobile app, websites, databases and many other programming services.

How do I get to them?

What should I know about the reselling business before starting

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 04:12 PM PST

I want to do this to escape my 8-4 job. My vision for it was when I get my tax returns to put it all towards a reselling business as a side job to test the waters with some reselling on small scale to see how profitable it is. But what should I know before starting it? Like taxes mostly and where do I even get the pallets from? I know you can buy them from websites but are they shipped to my house or do I have to pick them up? Also is there anything else I'm forgetting?

How many here have a business collecting data but don't know what to do with it?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 03:50 PM PST

Based on my experiences in this sub and reading accounts from small business owners, it seems that there is a need for a service to organize data and perform ad hoc analysis. So, are there business owners here, who are non-technical, or don't have the time/money to hire full time but want to utilize their data to extract actionable information? If so, are there specific reasons beyond what I've mentioned that is stopping you?

Anyone have any experience starting a niche job board? I have an email list of 150k of businesses in my industry, would like to start an industry job board.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 03:21 PM PST

Some of you may have seen my previous post, regarding shutting down my long time ecommerce site. I want to start a new site in the same industry to capitalize on my customer data. I have about 150k customer list. 70% of these are businesses. The industry I am in is somewhat specialized and can be hard to find qualified employees. So I am considering starting a job board. Businesses can advertise their jobs, and people can post their resumes. In addition to that, I would add content to make it an industry blog.

Does anyone have any experience with building a successful job board? I figure my 150k email list would be a great start. If anyone has any experience, would love to hear your thoughts. Can a job board bring in decent revenue? I'd also be open to a partnership with the right person.

Founders — what tools have you found best to manage the initial operational/admin chaos?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 09:08 AM PST

    Hi all,

I hope you're keeping well amid the tumult. Far from an easy 20 months. I hope the holidays were a bit of a break from it all.

Getting in touch as I just joined a startup as the first employee. Initially, a large part of this role, I've realized, is going to be operational and admin work. Managing passwords, assets, leads, etc. As a complete novice to this game, I'm hoping to get your seasoned advice.

With that, I'm wondering if any of you have any recommendations for tools you've found particularly good for managing a startup and all that comes with that?

I know this question is vague, my apologies. Any direction is appreciated. Wishing you all a good week.

How do you deal with (healthy) amounts of fear, doubt, or the feeling of failure?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 11:09 AM PST

We all have it, if I believe fellow business owners. We all get struck with the fear of failing, doubt, imposter-syndrome, or not succeeding every now and then. Especially if you're competitive, put a lot of time into something, and I was curious how some of you deal with this?

I'm currently in the midst of making my MVP for a platform within the game development niche. I've worked in the AAA for quite some years hence why I chose to start my own business within it, and a useful network and knowledge I have of said industry. But of course there's competition, everyone has competition. And seeing them do their thing, grow, already being more established, does give me some doubts every now and then. But they had to start too at some point, and on the other hand, due to my competitive nature, it also motivates me to work even harder and build an amazing product! And I'm lucky to have a lot of ex colleagues, friends, family, who are all supportive.

But still, the doubts sometimes hit me and I would love to know how you deal with them and how they effect you. Thanks for taking the time :)

I totally understand this, and would love to learn more about, what you are missing or would want in your life, to call your social & dating life ideal ?

    Hosting Another Service

    Posted: 10 Jan 2022 02:42 PM PST

Too highlight my use case I'm going to use a ridiculous example. Let's say Microsoft Office 365 did not exist on the cloud. If I hosted office suite online/cloud and offered it as a service to users would that be illegal or violate copyright?

Assume each users payed their own license fee to MS.
