    Help

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 10:18 PM PST

I know this is dicey, but a friend needs help with his friend, who is undocumented but needs medical care immediately. He has a sore or fungus or something on his foot that has been really painful for months. He went to a doctor already, but had to pay several hundred just for the visit. He couldn't afford the medication that would've cleared his foot. He just takes pain pills to deal with it while he works every day. My question is, what are his options? Are there doctors that would let him get medication using his insurance? Are there free clinics that could give him the medication he needs? I'm sorry I'm a sucker for people in these situations. I'm concerned.

Can I ask the at-fault driver's insurance for a check instead of them covering repairs? How does one go about that?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 06:40 PM PST

Background (just in case): I was rear ended, the other driver was completely at fault. I got a call from their car insurance, but called ours first to inform them. Thought our car insurance would deal with their car insurance, but ours said since they were at-fault we should deal directly. She setup an appointment at one of their mechanics to do a damage estimate. Mostly it's cosmetic, but the mechanic advised we just take the money instead of doing the repairs because of how old the car is.

Now I've seen people do this when dealing with repair costs their own insurance would be covering. But does it work the same way if it's someone else's insurance covering it? If so, do I just tell their insurance rep I'd rather the have a check instead of doing the repairs? Also does doing this reduce the amount quoted from the damage estimate?

My house is water damaged, need help with renter’s insurance claim! TIA

    Posted: 08 Jan 2022 01:42 AM PST

Hello! I am just looking for a little advice with a renter's insurance claim. My townhouse had heavy leaking (that would have lead to the entire house being flooded had we not emptied buckets for about 6 hours) due to an inadequately weatherproofed green roof.

I am displaced from my home right now as the restoration company hired by my landlord is facilitating the drying of the house. I have a $500 deductible on my policy that I can't really afford so I've found free accommodations for the time being.

First question: My insurance company initially called me about setting up a hotel and said I had to pay my deductible before they could do that, but I'm wondering if I can just start saving receipts/book my own hotel and then submit them later to count toward my deductible. Because I'm not sure if my temporary accommodations will end up being over $500. I will be displaced for an unknown amount of time so it certainly could (and most likely will be) over $500 but I obviously don't want to pay that if I don't have to.

Second question: the repairs that will have to be made are going to be quite extensive and I see lease termination being a big possibility. Do renter's insurance policies usually cover moving companies and deposits for new housing under loss of use?

Third question: I'm of the opinion that the roof leaking was due to negligence on the part of my landlord. He was aware the roof was not properly weather proofed as we had minor leaking a year ago and a second time 3 months ago. Both times we reported it to him and he prevented more water from coming in by clearing the drainage pipe, but he didn't actually address the inadequate weather proofing. If it is negligence, is his insurance company responsible for compensating me for anything? I'm not a professional but I'm assuming I wouldn't even be able to prove it's negligence without going to court so I know that would be a longer commitment to solving this issue. I'm just very angry at this entirely preventable situation and would like to see my landlord learn his lesson here.

The people assigned to my claim haven't been very helpful with these questions so I appreciate any advice! Thanks.

TLDR; flooded house, scummy landlord, unresponsive insurance company

Handyman for renovations and leaking dishwasher

    Posted: 08 Jan 2022 12:32 AM PST

Long story short: own a third story condo. Had local handymen redo the kitchen and a few days later downstairs neighbors reported leak. Called emergency plumber and found the copper supply line to the dishwasher was cracked and leaking.

Reno team is coming to rip up floor. Neighbors below have filed with insurance. Wondering best way to handle this given the circumstances.

    Car insurance

    Posted: 08 Jan 2022 12:04 AM PST

I'm a 20 yo male in California and I'm looking for car insurance. My parents aren't knowledgeable about insurance policies. On one hand I'm told to choose a bodily injury liability of 300,000/300,000 and on the other I'm told to get 15,000/30,000. I don't have anyone I can ask which is better or a base line reference. What's the range I should be looking at?

    Got in a sideswipe

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 08:43 PM PST

I got in a sideswipe. I was in the middle lane and some guy in his truck tried to move over in my lane from the right and caused me to go in someone else's lane and I swiped him. The guy in his truck kept going and it was dark and on the freeway and didn't get his plate. We traded information and I called my insurance to report my side. Who's fault is it? If I'm half insured, what do I pay?

Hello all my daughter is going to start driving soon. Her car is paid off and will only need liability insurance. Was wondering what the cheapest option is for this. It seems to me being a teenage driver is very expensive when it comes to insurance. Any help would be appreciated. We live around the Salt Lake city area in utah.

Hitting personal vehicle with company vehicle.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 07:06 PM PST

So, let me start by saying this hasn't happened. Its more of a what-if question. I almost hit my personal vehicle the other day with my company vehicle when I was backing out. It made me wonder what would happen if that actually did happen lol. Would it cancel out because it was my fault, depend on coverage, etc? My curiosity eats away at me sometimes. Betting id probably just eat the cost of the damage myself.

    insurance provider discount GPS tracker

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 06:15 PM PST

so i signed up for my insurance providers gps tracker that hooks into my cars OBD2 port.

they say its mainly to track how fast i accelerate and how hard i brake.

so i do the opposite. I drive like a grandma. But curious if anyones figured out how to work around this and what specific ranges will get me the BEST discount,

for example (driving 80+ will automatically give you the lowest discount, etc)

Are there any arbitrary rules for employer-based health insurance, as with the marketplace?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 05:04 PM PST

So I was on Medicaid last year, but was hired early November '21. Unfortunately my employer didn't have health insurance set up yet, but said they're trying to get it figured out by Feb or March. They have a top contender, but it took a lot of research, and they're not 100% everything will work out since there are only two employees in the US (both recently hired and in diff states) and it has difficult for them to find something that would work out for just two employees and one spouse. Today they are recommending us to sign us up for a statewide marketplace plan for the interim, since enrollment ends next week, and also in case the switch doesn't work out for some reason.

The problem is the marketplace plans in our state are extremely limited and will not cover treatment for my spouse's progressive degenerative disease that they are desperately seeking treatment for. Since that's the case, my employer seems somewhat committed to continue to find better insurance to offer.

If we enroll for a plan through the marketplace, will we still be able to switch into something new later in the year if my employer figures it all out and offers us better insurance? I am so worried that there's going to be some arbitrary rules for employer-based insurance, like the one's that reside over the marketplace- such as 60 days to enroll after hiring date, or other such rules.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 04:12 PM PST

I'm backed against a wall and kind of desperate to get health care coverage ASAP. I've been exploring my options and am leaning toward Sidecar instead of traditional, but before I bite the bullet and enroll, has anyone ever used them? Any feedback, positive or negative? TIA.

Does a non-US person who purchases a car need to first have a US drivers license in order to purchase insurance for the car? Can a person first buy a car, then insurance, then get the license? Thanks.

HUDs proposed rule to allow FHA mortgage holders obtain private flood insurance - final rule making next month?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 03:29 PM PST

Is anyone else watching for HUDs proposed rule to allow FHA mortgage holders to buy private flood insurance? I don't see this talked about a lot and I'm not sure why. I guess most people don't actively look for these things but I've been watching and waiting for months to see if there's any updates.

Right now I'm forced to buy a NFIP policy and for bare minimum coverage with a crap deductible I'm paying around $1300/year (no flood claims either) and with a private policy I would be paying around $600/year with better coverages.

It looks like the rule is being decided on next month, although I don't see a certain date on the agenda (just says 02/00/2022)

Is anyone else watching to see if it makes it through? Anyone here with more insight to how long it would take to go in effect? I tried reaching out to the person it lists as the point of contact on the fed registry for more information but haven't received a reply.

    Car insurance claim - California

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 02:46 PM PST

    Hello,

I'm making the decision to fix my car, but I'm not sure who to trust between the collision repair shop and my insurance company.

We filed a claim with insurance company on an accident where we were at fault, no one was hurt, but there was property damage and damage to our car. We fixed the property damage ourselves but needed to fix the car.

The insurance company sent us an amount of what they were willing to cover and said take it in to the shop but did not specify which shop to take it to.

We took it to a collision repair shop, but the shop could not move forward without requesting a supplemental since the amount covered by the insurance company.

The insurance company and collision shop spoke with each other and I hear from the collision shop that our insurance will partially cover the vehicle repair and we still pay the deductible since they are not affiliated with/do not work with the shop.

After looking through the declarations page and policy, I don't see anything that explicitly says this.

I'm not sure what to do, but has anyone been through this situation before?
