I got hired a couple months ago and I've done maybe 2 weeks worth of work in that time and no one has noticed. Or maybe they noticed and don't care. I'm going into my fourth year in PA and I don't know why I've busted my ass so much the first three years.

    Just got a Raise!!!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 11:03 AM PST

WOOOOOOOOO. I don't got anyone to share with so I'm posting here with my fellow accountants.

A little under a year ago I left EY for my current role (staff accountant). I was miserable in PA. I was on back to back to back busy seasons with clients that sucked and teams that were unhelpful. Everyone says to grind out until senior but I couldn't stand it anymore.

After a year and a couple months in PA I started looking for a way out. I ended up accepting a job with a start-up. I got about a 20% bump, better benefits, and stock options.

A day ago, I had a meeting with our CFO and will be getting another 18% bump!!!!! My base salary will now be close 90k!!!!

I would have never imagined I would be making that much money a little over 2 years into my career. Very thankful and grateful.

Extra info: I usually averaged 35 hours a week most times. During close I put in 45-50. Since we started the process of going public I've been doing more 45 hours weeks.

Edit: This got a lot more attention than what I was expecting. Thank you all for the well wishes I really appreciate it. I used this sub when I was interning in 2018 and learned a ton from everyone here.

To add more context. I have my CPA. I'm in a mid COL city. Working in the tech industry.

A toxic manager who I never worked for almost ruined my career

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 08:51 PM PST

A toxic manager who I never worked for almost ruined my career by telling the partner I was a horriable performer. I probably would have left the firm if the partner had not given me a chance to prove myself.

The firm lost the client that I worked on for 3 years that took almost 60% of my yearly client hours. As such, I started to look for different clients to fill my hours. I reached out to a partner and asked if I could join his team. He initally told me that he would love to have me in his team. However, he reached out to me a week later and informed me that I need to talk manager "A" who I never worked with and is from a different office because A mentioned that I am a horriable performer, and I would be a liability to the team.

I told him that I have never worked for her, and if you are that concern regarding my performance, you need to talk to the people who I worked with for 3 years because I am very confident that they will say nothing but good things about me. Thankfully, the partner found out that "A" was full of shit and gave me a chance to prove myself that I know my shit.

Thankfully, I fucking killed the the project I was managing and the partner nominated me as a performer of the year. Honestly, I still have no idea why the manager made a such claim and tried to ruin my career.

To the manager who tried to fuck my career up, you can go and fuck yourself.

Y'all weren't kidding about busy season

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 04:20 PM PST

I apologize to all the redditors who I thought were being overdramatic about busy season. The panic attacks, anti-depressants, mental breakdowns, 30 minute shits and more are all realizable now. As a new audit staff, I will soon, by Monday, enter the eye of the hurricane that is busy season. How do you all manage with working 60-70 hours in public non-big 4 and 90+ hours in big 4?

I’m curious, am I underpaid? Here are the details; 1) over 14yrs experience. 2) Mostly tax and almost all in public. 3) Always received positive year end reviews. 4) Have both a cpa and MBA. 5) Current Salary is 125k. Should I ask for more or is this fair?

    What’s the deal with Pennsylvania?

Everyone always talking about how much they hate it there — just move? I've visited so I can't say much but damn do accountants really hate that state.

Don't forget about your good clients

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 08:22 PM PST

I called up my closest clients today to let them know I was leaving public accounting for a job in industry. I've developed a lot of client relationships in my decade + in PA. Everytime I seriously considered making a move, my close clients were at the top of my pros list for public.

I'm leaving for a really great/rare opportunity. One was super excited for me and immediately wanted to meet up to celebrate and the other (old enough to be my dad) was proud of me and also wanted to go out and celebrate. Both were so sincere in their warm wishes and happiness for me that it made my day.

That's it. Just wanted to share that good colleagues are awesome because you shoot the shit with them and you can commiserate on the shitty times together, but don't forget about awesome clients.

The shitty ones make our lives hell, the needy but appreciative ones are good because you feel important and needed, but the ones you are really close with and have a mutual respect for... might be the best part of this profession.

Anyone else not tell their employer that their vaccinated yet?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 06:12 AM PST

Vaccinated here, I haven't told my employer that I'm vaccinated yet. I've gotten to be fully remote and as a kicker now I'm getting out of working on tedious acquisition work in Canada. I don't see any downside in not telling my company yet. Any reason this could end up backfiring down the road?

What kind of job would be good to gain experience while I pursue a degree in Accounting?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 09:01 PM PST

Hey everyone. It'll probably take me about 2.5 years to finish my degree. Right now I'm a Video Teller at a bank (basically a teller but virtual and I do account maintenance like debit card reissues and CD renewals) but I'm looking for new opportunities as I need something part time so I can focus on school. What should I be looking for? I want to gain experience and be more valuable once I graduate. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Edit: I'm specifically interested in auditing :)
