    Tomorrow is my last day

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:39 PM PST

Tomorrow is my last day with the current firm (Big4), tired of being underpaid.

I am moving to one of the top 10 firms with a 68% salary increase!

Edit 1: international tax / MCOL. No bonus all in base salary. I said I don't want a bonus put everything into my base salary

Senior accountant is pressuring me to be a part of the “work family”. Any advice?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 10:09 PM PST

This senior (like many people at this company) has no outside life and is a workaholic, so it makes sense that they derive purpose and companionship from this job. I, on the other hand, have zero interest in giving more of my time and energy to this company than I already do. I have loved ones that I want to spend time with and hobbies that I enjoy. Basically, I work as a means to an end and work-life balance is very important to me. I tried explaining to my senior that it's difficult to justify attending virtual happy hours when I'll probably have to work late if I do, or justify reading a book (that I'm not remotely interested in) for their book club in my personal time. My actual work performance is not an issue; I work hard and was just promoted. I'm also polite and kind to anyone I interact with, but this senior is making a very big deal of being part of the work cult "family" and is upset because I don't participate in non-mandatory social events. I would appreciate any advice/thoughts.

    CPA State licensing is stupid

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 07:30 AM PST

I live in Montana, work remotely for a mid regional firm, commute back to Seattle on occasion and serve clients across the entire country in the PCS/High net worth service line. Why do we even do state based licensing at this point? I get that states have sovereignty….but this is stupid. Can't we all get on the same page on this?

What section of the CPA exam was the hardest for you?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 02:11 PM PST

I am graduating soon and would like to try to study for and pass one of the CPA exam sections before I start working full time. I was thinking of starting with the most difficult one since I won't be working full time and will have more time to study for it. Which section was the hardest for you? Which would you recommend I take first when I have more time? Thanks!

Anyone else jealous of their non accounting majors?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 11:26 PM PST

My friends who majored in marketing, HR and operations have much more interesting jobs than I do, work at cooler companies, get paid more, and don't have to study their ass off for the cpa exam.

Majoring in accounting at a half decent business school is the biggest mistake anyone can make.

I'm very bad at math. Would accounting be a tough major for me?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 10:16 PM PST

    Greetings,

So here's the deal. I graduated from university in 2018 with a double major in Political Science and Sociology. I couldn't get anywhere with this, so I went back to university and enrolled in their bachelor of commerce program.

The thing is I can't decide on a major. I want to try accounting, but I'm TERRIBLE at math (especially in calculus and stats). I feel like accounting is the safest option, and the potential for a higher than average income.

So, would a person like me who struggles in math be okay in accounting?

My managers are literally always online till 9pm

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 12:20 AM PST

Why do they do this to themselves? What makes them stay? They can easily find a job that pays 40% more with less hours and less stress. Are they just afraid to leave their comfort zone?

Anyone else entering busy season unmotivated to work?

Due to lack of staff, all the jobs are looking like shit shows with the progress being slow and reporting deadline coming soon.

Before anyone says to resign, I did. Just stuck serving a three month notice now.

    Should I leave? I need advice…

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 07:50 PM PST

    Hey y'all,

Happy Tax Season! So right now I work for a small public accounting firm atm, and I was thinking about moving on - maybe to a bigger public accounting firm. Here are a few reasons why:

    1. I don't know if it's me but my previous company offered a WFH option and my current company doesn't. I tend to like working remotely (not everyday) but it's nice to have that option. My current company doesn't like WFH. I think it's common nowadays for Public accounting firms to have a WFH option.

    2. I feel like I don't get enough PTO with this company. In addition to that the benefits are mid. How much PTO do you guys get?

    3. One of the managers was coming on to me for using headphones while in the office. I was slammed with work and fell behind (but so was every other accountant). I don't know about you guys but I can't properly function without headphones, I feel like I go crazy if I don't have my headphones in. Also, everybody else uses headphones in the office. Yikes!

    4. The overall mood of the office is contingent on how the partner, manager and senior feels. One day the senior can be a dick, another day the manager can be a dick. But granted…every office has their assholes.

Don't get me wrong I like public accounting (for now) but I'm considering moving on to another mid sized firm. I've been working with my current company for about 10 months…I was thinking about maybe leaving after tax season but idk. I wouldn't even mind moving on to industry but I definitely want to get a year under my belt if I decide to go that route. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Monthend Close Hours

    Posted: 04 Jan 2022 08:33 PM PST

I work for a large public company and when it comes to month end, we work alot of hours on the close. Then comes quarter end, even more, now we are at year end and the higher ups could have given us an extra day like they did the Finance team, but now we still have to close at the same time.

During the close, day zero (Friday New Years Eve), it is technically a company Holiday, but not for Accounting! We weren't told we had to work, but we have certain amount of journal entries, I have 35, that have to be done that day, so yeah. Then in order to not be so overwhelmed come Monday, it becomes necessary to also work on Sat and Sun. For day +1 Monday of the close, I have about 40 because of extra year end journals plus all the extra manual entries that pop up. So Friday, worked 10 hours, Sat/Sun 8 hours total, then Monday 16 hours. Now it is Tuesday, I have been working since 7am, hardly out of my seat. I'm not getting all the information I need from others to complete some journal entries, by the time we have our "close checkin" at 5pm, I still have 12 journals to do. Half of them will take me 3 hours to finish. Other people on the call state they also have about 10 or so left, everyone is behind. Managers just state, "yes we know this is a tough one, blah blah, we appreciate you guys..." Still expected to finish. Oh, I'm also sick, kids sick, spouse sick, I have a fever, body aches, congestion. Maybe Covid, maybe flu, who knows can't get a test anywhere. I tell my boss, I'm just too sick, is there a way we can push these in the morning, he already knows my symptoms, he says "we need to book the P&L ones, do those and then take the rest of the night off (at 6:30pm). I look and half of them are P&L, like I just can't. I literally am in a fog and hopefully this post is making sense. Does anyone else have this experience? Are all public companies like this? There have been times where I've been working since 6am and it is 10pm at night and I have to basically tell my boss, I just can't work anymore, my brain is dead. Like, they just do not care.

    EY Pay Raise?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2022 06:14 AM PST

I have a buddy up in Boston who got a 4.5K increase in compensation while I am in NYC and did not receive any increase. We both just started, and his pay is now higher than mine. I thought NYC would have a higher pay then Boston even though they are both HCOL. Does anyone know why this is the case?
