This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

What is your play for the interest rate hikes that will happen next year?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 09:54 AM PST

It is now known that we will face interest raise hikes during the first half of next year and beyond. My question for you fine folks is: do you have a play to try to benefit from the interest hikes, I've recently purchased 2 leaps on XLF for March 2022 and have been holding $C as it declines hoping that interest rates might result in a rally. What are yall up to?

BOE Surprises With First Hike in Crisis to Curb Inflation

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 04:26 AM PST

    From Bloomberg:

"The Bank of England unexpectedly raised interest rates for the first time since the pandemic struck, setting aside the threat to the U.K. economy posed by record coronavirus cases to become the most high-profile central bank to take on surging inflation.

Officials led by Governor Andrew Bailey voted 8-1 to lift borrowing costs by 15 basis points to 0.25%, delivering an increase that no other Group of Seven central bank has made since the start of the crisis. Silvana Tenreyro was the sole dissenter. Policy makers said more "modest" tightening is likely to be needed as inflation heads toward a peak likely to be around 6% in April.

The pound rallied as much as 0.8% while U.K. 10-year yields jumped 5 basis points after the decision. Traders now see the BOE's key rate rising to 1% by September.

The U.S. Federal Reserve already set a hawkish tone on the eve of the BOE announcement by signaling three rate hikes next year and accelerating the wind down of its stimulus program, while Norway kept up its own tightening effort on Thursday with its second increase this year.

The BOE's precipitous shift into tightening mode will surprise the large majority of economists who anticipated no change, and investors who were pricing in around a 40% chance of a move. The outcome was the second in a row featuring a surprise after November's decision to stay on hold wrong-footed financial markets.

The BOE hike is a response to the danger posed by surging prices gains, with a report this week showing inflation jumped to 5.1% in November -- more than double the central bank's target -- and a separate report Tuesday showing U.K. companies added to payrolls at a record pace.

Considering that backdrop, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chief European Economist Jari Stehn told Bloomberg Television just hours earlier that an outcome of no change was "not a done deal," even though it was his main expectation."

Negativity around Reddit's IPO is loaded with bias.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 02:36 AM PST

It's very similar bias to what a Chicago native will speak on Portillos being a public company - they feel so at home with the product that they feel comfortable critiquing it, despite being a regular customer.

I study Metaverse and social media investments and am greatly looking forward to Reddit's IPO.

In my view, the future of Reddit is going to be deeper focus in it's subreddit communities. The CEO is on record saying it looks up to Roblox's community model of game creators (subreddit owners) and players (posts/comments)

In my view, Reddit going public isn't going to be some advertising nightmare for consumers. That part happened years ago when Reddit focused on mobile. Reddit is going to focus on content creation and getting subreddits more active with incentives.

For example, Roblox has engagement based payouts for games, where the creator is paid based on time spent in a game. How much of your time on Reddit is spent on a few subreddits?

I'm also fascinated with how much redditors are willing to spend on digital goods on this app. I think we will soon see a Reddit marketplace that we aren't really expecting too.

I'm really excited for this and Im going all in along with Block for 2022.

Why did equities go up after the Fed announcement yesterday?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 01:15 AM PST

Yesterday the Fed announced 3 interest rate hikes to tackle inflation in 2022. This hawkish move pushed the stock market up after nearly a week of constant decline.

Why didn't this push the stock market down further? My understanding is that if there are planned interest rate hikes, this tends to decrease equity valuations so the market goes down. Can someone explain why it went up?

    (12/16) Thursday's Pre-Market Stock Movers & News

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 05:26 AM PST

Good morning traders and investors of the r/stocks sub! Welcome to Thursday! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Thursday, December 16th, 2021-

Dow futures up 200 points following Fed decision to aggressively wind down asset purchases

U.S. stock futures rose sharply in early Thursday trading after the Federal Reserve signaled it would be aggressive on tapering and sees three interest rate hikes in 2022.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 222 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.7% each.

Shares of companies that have done well in previous rate-hiking cycles led premarket gainers. Materials stocks FMC Corp. and Freeport-McMoRan both rose more than 3% ahead of the opening bell. Bank stocks also rose across the board, with JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Bank of America all up about 0.6%.

In transportation news, Delta Air Lines reported that it now expects to see a profit of $200 million in the fourth quarter, after previously projecting a loss. Shares rose 2.2% on the news.

In other central banking news, the Bank of England announced it is hiking its key policy rate by 15 basis points to 0.25%. Markets were awaiting a separate policy decision from the European Central Bank. There also is more economic news on tap, with weekly jobless claims and housing starts out at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Following the Fed news, traders accelerated their own expectations for interest rate increases. Fed funds futures trading now points to a 63% chance of the first quarter-percentage-point increase coming in May 2022, with chances also rising to about 44% that the central bank could make its first move as soon as March, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Stocks traded in negative territory throughout the regular session Wednesday and turned higher ahead of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell's press conference in the afternoon at the conclusion of the two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The Dow added 383 points, or 1.08%. The S&P 500 rose 1.63% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite jumped 2.15%.

"The fact that the FOMC acknowledged new COVID variants as a threat to the economic recovery that could alter policy going forward, as well as the generally optimistic tone from Powell in the presser, helped spark a relief rally as the Fed meeting was viewed as being not-as-hawkish-as-feared," Tom Essaye of the Sevens Report said in a note on Thursday.

The Fed will begin reducing the pace of its asset purchases in January and buy just $60 billion of bonds each month going forward, compared to $90 billion in the month of December. That decision follows recent inflation data showing a 6.8% surge in November, which is higher than expected and the fastest rate since 1982.

"The notion that elevated inflation levels would be transitory has finally been thrown out the window by the Fed and the latest policy adjustments are reflective of a committee that doesn't want to miss the next train leaving the station," said Charlie Ripley, senior investment strategist for Allianz Investment Management.

Health-care stocks UnitedHealth and Amgen gained ground Wednesday, rising 3.1% and 2.6%, respectively.

Adobe and Accenture are scheduled to report quarterly earnings before the opening bell. FedEx and Rivian will report after the bell.

what are your predictions for best sector performance next year?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 01:25 AM PST

Materials? Industrials ? Financials? Healthcare? Tech? Cyclicals?

Tech seems to be not the best idea moving forward imo and I am looking more at more "boomer" type stocks next year as tapering comes into play. Yes, the tech growth stocks can still perform well, but I also intend to play very heavily into the cyclicals and re-opening trade and if another variant pops up, I will double down.

I also continue to hear how great financials will do, but I need to still wait on that and would rather continue to play into industrials and even materials despite inflation possibly slowing down in 2022.

Homebuilders continue to be a great pick and I expect to see continued out performance from them in 2022.

I just received an email this morning from Fidelity letting me know that Draftkings is Merging with Golden Nugget online gaming. Can someone explain what this means for the stock going forward? Did they merge because they are crushing it and are getting bigger or because they aren't doing well and need to combine forces with another entity? Thanks in advance for the responses.

    Market Makers !

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 11:48 AM PST

Todays price action in the market almost seems like its manipulated.

It feels that large part of the big whales were expecting much more hawkish comments from Fed and when they didn't get it, the market suddenly went away from what they were trying to do ... and that is spread FUD.

Today, seems like the want to make everyone feel that we are still in the bear trend, and want to scare everyone away after a really brilliant fed message yesterday. If you scare away investors after a bullish message, they will likely not come in for long and their puts can keep printing money.

I have no other explanation for todays market. Its just crazy, how this goes up and down 3% on a daily basis.

Even if we fast forward to end of 2022 and we have 3 rate hikes, Fed funds rate would still be under 1% and that should be insanely bullish for any economy. Its just crazy how the market is try to play on everyones fear right now. It just doesnt make sense.

What's going on with Remitly (RELY)?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 10:57 AM PST

Hi, Remitly is a software company that allows you to transfer money overseas.

I'm sort of a newbie to the investing world, so I want to understand why their stock only goes down. They IPOed 3 months ago, and since then, their stock went from $52 to $18. I bought $70 worth of stock in November.

I see that their revenues have been increasing at a good rate. They are losing money, but so are most of the companies in that stage. I see they have a bunch of competition, but who doesn't? They have a strong buy rating on Yahoo finance and a 100% buy rating on Robinhood. I've personally used it and they have a good product and the best rates for currency conversion. But everyday I look at it, I just see red. Why?

How to build an even portfolio?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2021 07:40 AM PST

Of all the investment tools out there that I've found I cannot quite find a single one that helps me properly create a portfolio that shows me the percentages of where I need to put cash into in order to stick with my target allocations.

For example. If I want to put cash into 25% stock A, 25% stock B, 50% stock C. There's seemingly no tool for me to know how how much I need to put into each one other than doing it manually in an spreadsheet (I'm terrible with making spreadsheets and math)...and even then I'd only know how much I'm off by. This example is really simple but if I had 25 other stocks/MF's I'd want to invest in it becomes way more complicated and I don't have any idea how to simplify all of this.

The only tools i've found are more high level like "put x% into total cap, small cap, bonds, stocks, etc" but nothing lets me select individual stocks & funds.

To be clear, I mean to keep these percentages of the stock quantity not total cash value.

    Any recommendations?

Reddit Files Confidentially for IPO Social media company says in blog post it filed paperwork with SEC to go public.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2021 11:26 PM PST

Most recently, the company announced that it had raised a $700 million round in August 2021 at a valuation of more than $10 billion. The social media company did not make the filing publicly available. The company also did not say how many shares would be offered nor the price range for the proposed offering.

Although Reddit was created in 2005, it has taken a unique road toward going public.

Conde Nast Publications acquired Reddit in 2006. The social media services remained a part of the publication company until it was made an independent subsidiary in 2011. Since then, it raised a series of funding rounds from venture capital firms.

Reddit Inc. is considering ways to make its share offering more accessible to individual investors as it plans to go public, Chief Executive Steve Huffman said.

Mr. Huffman the market is evolving in a way that makes it easier for even small investors to buy into new offerings, he said at The Wall Street Journal's Tech Live conference Monday. It is often difficult for individual investors to buy into hot initial public offerings. "I want our users to be shareholders, and I want our shareholders to be users," Mr. Huffman said at the conference, which the Journal hosted virtually with top executives.

How can the US stock market keep going up like this?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2021 10:40 PM PST

Other than a little amount I had in some meme stocks, I have just had my money in a savings account paying a huge 0.6% interest!

I would like to build a portfolio of stocks, rather than just keep the money in a low interest savings account, especially when you look at inflation and see the gains being made in the stock market right now, but I really struggle to see how this market isn't prone to crash at any moment.

When you look at it, it just goes up and up and up, like way higher and more extreme than anything I can see from previous crashes.

But... I don't know enough about the stock market to know if this has the makings of a crash, other than the price rapidly increasing so fast. If you look at the other markets across the World since the drop caused by Covid, they have recovered, but they are nothing like the US stock market.

Should I just be patient and wait, or should I look into investing in other markets, or should I just pick an ETF an invest now?

I know they say time in the market is better than timing the market.

    Thanks
