Young founder worried about future job prospects

    Posted: 23 Dec 2021 03:43 AM PST

Hey, I am a young co-founder (early 20s) at a 35m VC backed startup. Me and my other co-founders started this when I was in my last year in uni for CS. Previously, I had SWE internships for a few startups and big tech companies but never a "full time" job . Currently at my startup, I don't code anymore as I have taken more of a managerial role.

What I am worried about is if the startup fails and i have to go get a job. I would be stuck in a weird spot. All my peers would have been climbing the engineering ladder and I would have no relevant experience apart from my internships, but even then I would be out of practice in terms of SWE technical abilities. Am I fucked? Would I have to start from the ground up? What other roles apart from SWE can I take that would not set me back too much financially speaking? Have you been in this type of situation or know what other people do or what jobs do they get when this happens?

Still trying to figure out a plan for this worst case scenario. We grew very quick so I haven't had time to give this scenario much thought, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers

Tldr: What kind of jobs can I leverage with my experience at my own startup if my experience before the startup was only SWE internships?

Is this a normal hiring process for a start up?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 10:56 AM PST

What is the hiring process like for earlier stage start ups? The experiences I've had have both been pretty informal, where the founders asked me to work for them and there was no formal job description or KPI outlined (kind of a you define the role type scenario). Is this normal? The lack of a formal process makes me feel like I'm being strung along and I'm not sure if I'm just overthinking it or if this is a red flag!

    Unique signatures

I'm a Biophysicist with a passion for art. I can create unique microscopic patterns on art work that cannot be copied or altered. This proves the art you purchased is produced by the artist and is not a forgery which in turn, restricts the supply. Due to this, I have kind of been comparing this to an NFT in terms of the protection it provides. Is this something people think could be a good business?

Brands making the right kinda impact: a series - pt. 1

    Posted: 23 Dec 2021 05:13 AM PST

There are brands who surprise us with their selflessness.

They give back to the individual, the community or the environment as a whole.

I want to recognize them. And each Thursday, I will.

Today, I want to recognize Vamos.

    Who:

Vamos is a Madrid-based startup transforming end-to-end car ownership experience for customers through their platform.

    What:

    Vamos had an initiative.

    The #UnCarUnTree initiative.

    The initiative:

To plant a tree for every car they successfully deliver to their customer. Every month.

Vamos has planted hundreds of trees already.

Their team recently travelled to Gaudalajara, in collaboration with Fundacion Apadrina un Arbol.

The mission: Reforestation of 13,000 hectares, which were razed during a fire in 2005.

This is the kind of initiative that doesn't just earn you loyal customers, but also motivated employees and some extra sprinkling of goodwill.

How do you give back to your community?

Thoughts on ZEPTO, 10 min grocery delivery app for India.

    LINK

[NO HATE] I think this venture does not have a good business model/ MOAT.

The point is that what is the business model here, as an investor/ customer I need to know the proper business model, giants like zomato and swiggy have not been able to create a sustainable business model with their delivery model as well.

these guys are entering into the super competitive market including grofers(blinkit)[30% market share], amazon[30% market share], swiggy instamart, and bigbasket(30% market share).

Plus the q-commerce business model is not good of a long-term business model considering the unit economics as a proof zomato (https://finshots.in/archive/zomatos-unit-economics/) is struggling on this end as well. and this 10-minute model will be an even worse contender.

I just wonder who even wants groceries to be delivered in 10 mins(except for some emergencies). in my own home, we order once a week and mostly the orders are bulky with more than 20+ items. Since every household orders grocery planning ahead of time, we order today considering the consumption of next month, that's why no one cares whether the grocery is delivered in 10 mins or the next day as the groceries will be used OVER THE NEXT MONTH. We do not order only considering one day like we order food, groceries are different and this makes me the most skeptical about this model.

also, I believe it would be very difficult to get more than 10 items in 10 mins. the most amazing problem is that the delivery agent is delivering one order at a time which blows the unit economics out of the window similar to zomato. (link above). major players In the market like amazon and BigBasket deliver multiple orders in vans which makes the unit economics very reasonable as more than 10 orders are delivered in one van. This makes their business model have better longevity.

Plus they are going to hold fewer stocks and variety as they need many small warehouses scattered inside the city rather than the typical outskirts big warehouse system, this again defeats the purpose as a customer if I cant get one product on a particular app I will just go to the other app to order it no matter it gets delivered tomorrow.

I believe that the STANFORD and Y COMBINATOR tag was the result of this recent hype and huge funding. I do think there is a very niche market for this service but but but ..... the business model will NOT BE PROFITABLE.

I hope this venture is a success but looking at the FACTS I don't think so.
