Should I screw my team and leave now?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 03:08 PM PST

Received an offer with 50% raise and fully remote, but I feel that if leave now, I will fuck my team so bad in the ass, as in I'm the only person that knows the client.

I know that I should accept, but I feel guilty for that. Have you guys been in my place before? What did you do?? I'm a senior 1 rn.

Partner found out I was interviewing with other companies... asked me to come into his office

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 10:01 AM PST

After working until 11PM through the entirety of January-April this past year, I have come to the opinion fact bz season sucks! With the whopping experience of 1 whole year, I have kickstarted my search for a new accounting home! Fortunately I have my CPA (see tacky username) and have been able to schedule a number of interviews. Life was new and exciting again with all these potential employment options. It wasn't until my partner saw me with an extra pep in my step that he asked me to come to his office...

The 30 second walk to his office was dead silent. He's not the extraverted type but even this felt unusual. Time seemed to slow down as I reflected on all the potential outcomes. I was certain he was not firing me as we lost over a third of our team since last busy season. When we arrived, he immediately closed the door and jumped straight to the point; he found out about my interviews. I fumbled with my words but finally admitted to my search for a cost accounting/financial analyst type of role. What surprised me was his offer to help me search for a job through his connections. He mentioned public accounting is not for everyone and would like to see me land on my feet in a stable workplace. He also expressed that moving to a financial analyst role from public accounting would be under employing myself as it has a limited ceiling.

I am confused to say the least. I do not know if this is some sort of test, or he's essentially convincing me towards staying an additional busy season. I also did not know this about financial analysts. Am I selling myself short here? Would leaving public this early be a career mistake. Any advice from you masochists is appreciated.

    Lets share our weirdest interviews

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 11:23 AM PST

In light of the "great resignation" and to have some laughs around the holidays, why don't we all share our weirdest/ worst interviews? I will go first. Mine are actually 2 weird interviews that are tied for first place.

    1) International Public Firm (NotB4) interview was well over an hour. During the interview they invited in a Senior Manager and blindfolded him. HR then provided me with a children's wooden block puzzle that was a train. I had to assemble the train while HR monitored a stopwatch, then once I completed that task, I gave the dissembled train to the blindfolded senior manager and instructed him to build the train puzzle piece by piece. this was also timed. I failed this portion because the train was assembled but the final piece - a small attachment for the chimney, was inserted backwards.

    1. Second but also strangest interview was with a partner of an International Firm (NotB4) who didn't really ask me any questions about knowledge, competency or my personality, but instead just wanted to take that time to tell me about how he became partner, which was that this particular firm was the only place that would hire him after he took 3 years off after graduating university to "backpack, party and live like Leo in The Beach" in Thailand. he alluded to many self incriminating behaviors during that time, and then admitted that he just never left the firm and after 8 years of "just working to get by" they made him a partner. Honestly, What a legend.

    What are your weirdest/worst interviews?

My boss said I get too involved.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 02:45 PM PST

    Basically the title.

I do bookkeeping for a construction company and any transaction that goes through our bank statement, I'm responsible for inputing it in our system. Later on, I generate statements that our tax preparer uses to process tax returns. If there are transactions that I'm not sure of, I ask my boss what it is, what for and for what project. There were situations in the past that he would use the company funds for personal purposes. I don't want them to deduct expenses that are not for business so they're not in trouble.

Is he just shady or am I at fault here?

Why can’t we write off living expenses to the same extent that corporations can write off operational expenses?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 08:56 PM PST

I'm a lil high so don't roast me, but seriously, why can't we? Sure, we don't generate as much economic activity as an operating company may, but by working we're still technically creating revenue for the government in terms of taxable income.

What excel functions do you use?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 10:49 AM PST

So it is the end of the term and the last class before the exam. My professor was saying that learning excel can lead to many job options in many fields with what we learned in class and more. We learned things like vlookup, if of all kinds, dates, and financial functions.

What do you use for work in the field? Anything I should pickup before graduation.

Inventory count - over the holidays

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 08:52 PM PST

For those at the A1 and A2 level that have not been asked to attend an inventory count over the holidays, have you made plans to be out of town (like to fly home or take a trip overseas)

Asking as I am currently trying to decide if I should book a flight overseas to see my signidant other or if I should stay put over the Xmas break.

    Wondering what everyone's arrangements are!

I keep thinking about a job interview I had yesterday, really weird.

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 05:28 AM PST

I keep thinking about how the lady I spoke with just came out and said that it was a giant mess. She explained to me that the last few controllers were incompetent and now their incompetence has caused the company to be audited by the state. What are some things that I need to watch out for so I don't get negligence penned on me? I assume the previous controllers would be held liable.

I hate LinkedIn….new firm demands it

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 04:20 PM PST

Soooooooo, I accepted an offer from a new firm about a month ago. This week was your traditional onboarding (firm size is about 60-70 people in total) type of experience.

Firm values, inclusivity, industries, growth, chirp, chirp, chirp, software, security, teams, blah, blah, blah.

Today, final day of onboarding we get around to getting the "firm approved" (LOL) email signature and what it needs to reflect. Today I am told that I need to include my LINKEDIN profile link on the signature….I CANNOT STAND that site.

All I have ever gotten from that is aggravation and being jerked around left and right with "colleagues/clients/potential clients" and all the BS fakery and shit eating that comes with it. I haven't updated that stupid thing in well over 10 years. I just checked it and it looks just like a college kids (which it was).

It gets better - I'm then told that one of their HR and marketing people will review my profile and advise on changes and for whom I should connect with…….I'm furious right now.

This aspect was NEVER discussed over a course of 3 interviews for about 2 months in total. Just….fuck I'm mad. Now I know l'm going to be expected to "network" like a douchebag who jumps, and asks "how high" like a little prick.

Has anyone else experienced this? How did you handle it if you disliked or didn't even use LinkedIn?

Whew….it felt better getting that out. 😰

Which job offer should I choose?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 04:32 PM PST

Big 4 - Audit (~65K plus signing bonus); option to promote to senior this July. I've been hoping for a Big 4 offer since I started my CPA journey this past year. Finally feel like I made it.

Industry - F500 (approx. #30) super specialized financial analyst position. Offer is $90K.

I realize everyone on this sub will probably tell me I'm an idiot for even considering the lower offer, but I feel like if I don't go big 4 now then I won't have the chance (or desire) later to join at a higher level. Likewise, I experienced a layoff not long ago due to COVID and that was the whole reason I got my CPA. I think having generalized big 4 audit experience will make me more drought proof, and a specialized FA position won't keep as many doors open in the future.

Just looking for help because I am really stressed about this decision.
