Stopping a thief in California? small business

    Stopping a thief in California?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:16 PM PST

We have a small retail shop in Southern California.

Yesterday a person came in, picked up a tote bag and starting filling it up with clothing. The person grabbed another rack of clothing and started to head out the door.

We made a human chain at the front door to stop the thief but the thief just bull dozed passed us.

Legally what can we do to mitigate theft if it's under $950. Can we attack them, follow them and call the police? Any suggestions would be helpful to train my staff and myself.

Brother opened a Pan Dulce (Mexican bread) Bakery!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 08:12 PM PST

Hi everyone, new to the sub but wanted to ask for general advice as my brother is a first time business owner! Some background: my brother and his wife opened their small business about a month ago. Neither of them finished college or have 'business oriented' degrees (not that you need a degree to run a business). Given their lack of business knowledge, I was wondering what's the best way/software to keep an in-house log of cost of supplies, revenue and expenses etc. I want to make sure they're doing everything by the book and don't get too lost in the 'operations' without truly understanding the number side of things.

I'm wondering if it's advisable to hire an employee to solely focus on the accounting/finances side of things (although that may not be feasible given the high initial expenses) or sit down with them and have them learn the process?

I studied accounting and finance in college so my instinct is yelling at me to make sure we keep a meticulous track of the financial metrics to identify areas of improvement/strong points.

Any advice is greatly appreciated and congrats to all of you that have learned how to run their business - it is truly admirable! Thanks!

Chargebacks .5% of revenue but 100% of my brain sometimes.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:10 AM PST

This is just venting and sharing but I'm 10/10 losing chargeback cases and not one of them has been legit. Every email I get, no matter the amount of the chargeback, ruins my day. I meticulously detail the event, provide my proof, send off my case… and lose.

This morning I received a chargeback from possibly the worst customer I have ever had. She admitted on the phone that every part of her event was fine except one, which I refunded her for that part. Now full chargeback for unacceptable product.

I know it's part of doing business, I just hate liars.

    Business partner doing nothing

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:25 PM PST

I have a relative that seems to talk about what they will do in the future. I'm currently doing 99% of things myself, admin, networking, social media, graphic design, art work, consulting and running workshops by myself. I've had another relative come along with me who helps more than my "business partner".

I've nearly had enough and want to leave and rebrand. But I haven't had a discussion with them just yet. Should I talk to them first and then give them x amount of time before dropping out and doing it all myself?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    freelance sales / administrator

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:07 AM PST

How feasible is it to have a freelance sales / administrator that you contract out to 3 weeks every quarter?

I've done this myself insofar but trying to find ways to ramp up productivity by delegating "skills where needed".

Would you consider contracting to a freelance sales / administrator on this time basis (3 weeks a quarter) to build a relationship with?

Personal tax and startup tax ?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 01:17 AM PST

I have a regular job with 1099 income but I'm also a partner in LLC that was formed for a startup company with 2 other partners ( I own 20%). We all put 100K in the company this year 2021, can I deduct that from personal income tax as loses ? The business is still in development with no income. We expect to start soliciting customers soon. Thank you

Help me name my nonprofit! I want to help people get Italian citizenship.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:39 AM PST

Hi everyone. I want to start a nonprofit to help people become Italian citizens. My clients are predominantly from the United States with Italian heritage, which allows them to seek Italian citizenship. We will offer free or low cost assistance, Italian translations, genealogical research, etc. There are a lot of Italian citizenship companies out there but many are prohibitively expensive. It might be nice to offer assistance at a price everyone can afford (free)!

Can anyone help me come up with a good name? It has to be a name which also has a relevant domain name.

    Thank you so much!

Tips for pop up shops/farmer’s markets?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 11:21 PM PST

I'm starting to sell art prints, stickers, and shirts outside of my main job (tattooing). I tried an online store and had a bit of success, but it needs a lot of advertising to do well and it's hard to keep up with. I want to move to doing in-person events, and I have one scheduled for next month. Any advice for this? Or even other ways to sell art that's not online.

Another question, although I'm having a hard time phrasing it- I believe I'm registered as an LLC with my state for tattooing. Am I good to just do everything for my pop ups under the same LLC/license/whatever? I can try to provide more info if needed.

I've been saving receipts for everything, but I also want to double check that I can write off the cost of getting all the art prints, stickers, etc. made.

Making updates on my Article of Organization.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:45 PM PST

    Hello,

I just submitted my Form LLC–1 but I realized I made a mistake when filling out the form online. Specifically, I accidentally put the filing date as today instead of January 1st. If I understand it correctly, if I filed today, then I would have to pay a Franchise tax board for the upcoming year, and the exempt tax year would be 2021. Would it be possible to change the filing date?

Distributing business cards and talking to potential customers at my retail job?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 09:05 PM PST

I want to start a cleaning business, something small and mostly based on word of mouth. I work a part time job in sales at a big chain hardware store.

If, when I interact with customers to sell them things/help them on the clock, I happen to mention my business or give them my card, will I get in trouble? Is it a bad idea to give co-workers my card casually if we have a conversation about my business?

I'm a student who needs a little more income and I have some experience cleaning professionally so this seems like a good side gig, if I can actually get the word out.

I don't plan to have any part of my legal name on the cards, just phone number and business social accounts.

Can my retailer sell my products to another retailer?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 03:21 AM PST

Basically gave 50% off to 1 retailer. And now he sold my product from another retailer with a discount. Which I won't know how much. I don't like how the deal is not directed to me…

I have no contracts signed though so I can still have a way to fix this.

    • What are the problems that could arise from this?

    • Would I not be able to control the pricing anymore if they sell cheaper?

    • It will be sold online and anyone who has internet can buy it.

    • Can I make an agreement with my retailer to not sell other businesses or is it out of my place to say that after they've already bought my products?

    Profit tracking platform?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 08:05 PM PST

    Hello,

Any suggestions for a good app, or platform to keep track of expenses in / expenses out / profits, etc? I know there is the tried and trusted excel, but I'm hoping to find something more appealing and intuitive. At the moment I do everything manually, but I'd love to find something that easily syncs that data. Preferably free, if that exists, but not a must.

I don’t know what to think anymore. Any recommendations / support would be appreciated.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:30 AM PST

Hi everyone, Basically I've been working really hard these past 2 years to build my business from scratch. I'm currently building my food trailer by myself to sell crepes, waffles desserts... because we had nothing like it in my city.

I've decided to go with a trailer because being 20 years old, i dont have the capital to start something big like a brick & mortar store but i wanted somewhere were i could do my deliveries & pickup.

The problem is that today i just saw a post about my biggest competitor (who has a store that does incredibly well in a city next to mine) is opening one in my city (10 15min away from my location)

Honestly im out of words. I dont know what to think anymore. I gave everything i had to this project, been working the past 6 years so i can finally start something of my own. I know that this is going to hurt my business and i don't know what to think anymore.

What is better to sell used clothes on?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:13 PM PST

I always get tons of compliments on my outfits so I figured might be easy money to sell my clothes online.

Should I use depop, FB marketplace, or eBay?

I heard depop has high fees but how bad are those fees in reality? I haven't gotten a percentage or $ amount for their fees. And does eBay or FB marketplace also have fees?

Buy, lease, or finance a cargo van?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PST

I have the cash in the bank, but what's actually the best way to come to own a new work van? I live in Ontario, Canada, and I'd like to take advantage of the system as best I can.

I guess I can also purchase it personally and reimburse myself per km.

Want to start a speaking/training business

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:14 PM PST

Hi, I quit my job to have a go at speaking and training. I have expertise in sales, sales management, finance, running service operations. I also do a lot of stand up comedy. When I did trainings for my former employer, people liked what I did and I loved it.

Thing is, I have been testing a few ideas but nothing's catching so far. I realize that I have very little idea of the market of business people who buy trainings or speakers.

Do you have suggestions on how to go about finding what people need a speaker or a trainer on? On what types of trainings have you people actually spent money? (Or are considering spending money?)

(The things I can teach is sales skills, leadership skills, self-motivation skills.)

    Any pointer?

Where to learn more about commercial lending?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 10:01 AM PST

As my company grows and I potentially outgrow my local bank, I want to make sure I'm as educated as possible about commercial lending. For example I was told yesterday that banks don't necessarily have to apply an LLC's debt to my personal debt limit, meaning a $2M lending limit with a bank could potentially be a $4 or 6M limit depending on the companies I own and how I arrange my loans.

Are there good resources to learn more about commercial debt as I continue to grow my companies?

Business partner doesn't seem to do much

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 12:46 PM PST

I started my business out with a close friend and it seems like he does nothing. It started out with other people, but the business failed because of lack of care. When that died, I tried to start it with my close friend and he invested his money into buying a couple clothes, around $80 worth. It started out cool and I was responsible for the website design, the clothing designs, and photography, which I did. We split it 50/50 and he is responsible for the marketing. He told me I would have to invest my money into digital marketing and he also hinted he did not want to pay or make flyers for our business himself, then he tried to put the responsibility on me because I told him I would make flyers as well and have my brother do door to door sales, so he responded with "I'm waiting for you to make them". I feel like he is using me and we haven't made any money yet, I don't know if I should drop him out of the business before it's too late, take a chance and see what he does. I gave him a task to complete the links on the footer and he used a tos generator, which probably took him 5 minutes to do. His deadline is the end of this month and so far he has only completed 1 link out of 10. I work 60 hours a week and so far he worked 5 minutes. I don't know what to do at this point. If anyone could give me advice what I could do, it would be appreciated

I'm opening up a tattoo studio, what is the business considered?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:27 PM PST

Trying to find my way around if my business should be an LLC or a Sole Proprietorship. Any advice? I know I need liability insurance, and everyone I tattoo signs a waiver omitting being able to sue me for particular things for a tattoo. I am renting a salon studio space from another business for the location.

I am the owner and only person that will be working at my business. I will be doing tattoos and that's it. I am in AZ, USA

How many people here truly "all-in'ed" for their business?
