My dad became an accountant in the mid 70s and (I think) my mom did this cross-stitch for him. Thought you'd all enjoy the OG IRL flair for being an accountant - I've been trying to get him to do an AMA but he thinks you're all a bunch of trolling degenerates haha.

    Feeling lost and unmotivated.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 03:39 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Just a passerby here just wanting to vent on my failures in trying to pursue a career in accounting.

I graduated 3 years ago and got my first job as an AR clerk as I didn't land any internships due to a shitty GPA. I worked there for a year and a half until I finally landed an "analyst" position that focuses on light bookkeeping and administrative work.

The analyst position was not really giving me any real accounting experience and felt I was wasting my time especially with a shitty mico-manager and the start of the pandemic. Eventually, I had to part ways with the company and was on EI for a year.

With 2.5years of work experience, I keep getting rejections after rejections after trying to get back to work until I finally applied for Robert Half and they got me a temp gig as an accounting assistant doing mostly collection emails and calls with some light ap for 20/hr, less than what I made as an AR clerk post-grad.

I feel like a failure, drained and unmotivated having to work myself from the beginning to get somewhere again.

Recruiter says CPA not as marketable as PA

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 09:55 AM PST

I was chatting with a recruiter that got me my most recent staff accountant job and he mentioned that having a CPA is okay but PA experience is more marketable. What are your opinions?

    Some background

-Has told recruiter multiple times I don't want to work for PA firm.

-Almost 4 years on industry with two companies (Chicago) and want to make a jump to senior role in industry after CPA. Is PA really that needed or is recruiter just trying to convince me to try to go into PA after CPA?

What is the best move for a tax manager, Big Four or National (BDO/RSM/GT)?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 07:30 PM PST

I am currently a tax manager at a midsize firm (think top 8-12). I am looking to leave my current employer because of some firm issues. I recently applied to the same exact tax practice at a bunch of firms.

Note that there are not many exit opportunities in tax, so working at a Big 4 will not necessarily open me to any new exit opportunities. All the tax firms know each other.

I am looking to become a senior manager/director and I want the best work environment possible -- I know the hours will be bad either way.

One difference I am aware of is, Big 4 have teams in India that will provide support in preparing tax returns. Is this a benefit? Big 4 firms may also have larger clients that may pop up late in the busy season, and I might be forced to push through the work. The same thing can happen at the national firms, but the client is likely to be smaller than the one at the Big 4 (e.g. a new client at the B4 is more likely to have 20+ trusts than a client at a national firm).

My other option is to go to an even smaller firm to hopefully become a big fish in a small pond.

    All feedback is appreciated.

What can I expect from FS Audit?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:09 PM PST

New hire. Been assigned to FS Audit. Already in training and a bit overwhelmed but I'm still in my excitement phase.

Some general tips I got from this sub: - Utilize OneNote - Outlook rules - Do work on work hours (time on tiktok, intagram, and twitter adds up) - Don't be afraid to ask questions (but in a proactive manner) - Exercise and get enough sleep as much as possible - Don't make the same mistake twice

What technical stuff can I expect from FS audit though?
