Question about serious accident I was in.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:07 PM PDT

A few weeks back I and my wife was involved in a serious accident where I was in the hospital for 5 days with a broken neck and bleeding on the brain. I will be out of work for 3 months at least. The other party's insurance has accepted fault and contacted me yesterday through voicemail that they are completing the total loss evaluation.

My question is with total loss how is compensation calculated? My mom has told me that they have to pay off the balance on my loan ($7,000ish) plus reimburse me for the value. I'm thinking they only have to pay me for the value. Any help is appreciated. I'm in Arkansas if that makes a difference.

    Got rear ended…. Couple questions.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:52 PM PDT

This girl has root insurance and her policy was three days old when she completely rear ended me (and admitted fault when she got out of the car)

Has anybody here ever dealt with root insurance for a not at fault accident?…

I'm so scared this is some fly by night insurance company and I'm going to get screwed. This whole thing has me just really stressed and I'm just looking for any kind of reassurance that this is a real legitimate company.

I might be overthinking this, but any input is appreciated.

Transfer of ownership (car) with potential insurance fraud of previous owner

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:25 AM PDT

    Hi (22F, Australia)

A family member of mine wants to sell me their car. The car was recently in the auto body repairs shop getting repaired from an accident where someone backed into the car. However, said family member is going to court for negligent driving and DUI charge and says that the police have evidence of the family member driving into a pole, causing the damage to the car (instead of the story where someone backed into the car) and now the family member thinks they accidentally defrauded the insurance company. If the car registration and ownership is transferred to me, will the insurance company have any right to take my new car?

Very stressed because this information all came to light today and I do not want to take a car that will produce any legal problems for me. Thank you :)

    Upcoming surgery and plan change.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:25 PM PDT

Couldn't find much about this online for my specific issue. Basically through my work I have the cheapest insurance plan with a $4800 deductible. I recently found out I'll need surgery with an estimated ~$8000 cost. Its not an immediate need but not something I want to put off too much longer. Either way I planned to have the surgery in January. Open enrolment starts soon for my company. Will there be any issues if I decide to get a lower deductible plan which better covers my surgery? I understand my monthly costs will be higher but I cant afford the large cost of the surgery itself. I've already seen a few dr's so there is a record of this medical issue, so that's why I wasn't sure if the insurance company would still cover it as well.

Does $89/month car insurance sound good for a 20M?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:39 PM PDT

I recently dropped out a college and have since been employed. I'm still living with my parents due to the fact I've been in and out of college since 2019. My parents have considered putting me on my own insurance policy since I'm capable of paying it and to build credit (I have no credit yet).

I'm unsure of the exact coverage and deductibles, but I'm pretty sure it will be the same as our current policy. I was told it would be $89/month, which from what I've seen online, is a good price.

I'm a 20M, no tickets or violations, and have taken a drivers safety course. I drive a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup which was given to me by my parents (father's old truck).

Also, if I decide to purchase a new/newer truck in the future, approximately how much would my insurance increase? I know a vehicle that's paid off (my current truck), would be substantially cheaper than one that is being financed.

My main reason for wanting a newer truck is because mine is approaching 200k miles, and every 2-3 months I seem to be paying for some type of repair (it's 16 years old and original parts at that age tend to break, but I'd say ~90% of the truck is in good condition). Also, 14MPG hurts the wallet.

Edit: Saw that vehicle value plays a factor in rates and recommended coverage. My truck is valued at ~$7000. Give or take $1000 depending on the sources I used to find the value.

Can I still apply for medical insurance for 2021?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:24 AM PDT

I don't think I have a qualifying life event, and was wondering if I can still apply for coverage for the remainder of 2021? If this is possible, how can I do so and how should I choose the plan?

Should I just move on if there was no physical damage after an accident?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:23 AM PDT

I was at a stop light and the guy didn't break in time and rear-ended me. There was no damage on either of our bumpers. I'm not sure how but the splash guard got detached. I asked for his insurance info and he kept apologizing and said he knows a shop. He said we can just take a pic of each other's drivers license and exchange phone number.

I feel like the splash guard is a pretty minor thing, my friend (who's a car guy) said that it's nothing and some cars don't even come with them, is this true?

    Should I just move on?

Edit: Called my insurance, they told me that my deductible is $750 and the splash guard is way lower than that.

Got caught by a speed camera in a rental car

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:41 PM PDT

I'm currently using a rental car, which is being paid for by Geico (I was in a not-at-fault accident).

I gave my credit card for a $50 deposit when I picked up the car, but it's supposed to be 100% covered by Geico.

A speed camera flash went off when I was driving, and I was almost definitely caught going about 10 mph over.

I am wondering: will I get billed for this by Enterprise, or will Geico get charged since they are the one being billed for the rental?

Is there a way to prevent my parents from seeing if I used their insurance?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 07:40 PM PDT

Long story short, I went to the hospital for alcohol intoxication. I need to email the hospital my insurance but I am under my parents'. I am 18 years old, and according to what I've read it won't state the reason for the visit on the EOB, but it will still say that I went to the ER. We use United Health, btw. Is there any way I can prevent insurance company from mailing the statement to my parents? Thanks

I need serious help lowering my insurance rate.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:52 AM PDT

So I'll try to make this post as detailed as I can without giving out too much information. The cheapest insurance I've been able to find is liability for $245/mo. I need to figure out why it's so expensive and what I can do to lower the rate. I'll go through some things that I know of that could affect rates.

    I have no accidents.

One speeding ticket (74 in a 55) from 2018 (I have no doubt this affects it, but this is my only speeding ticket.)

    I'm 23M

    I drive a newer vehicle (2017 Jeep)

One ticket for no registration, no insurance (due to costs, not sure if this affects rate)

It's honestly at the point now that I just can't afford it. I've already had trouble affording it in the past, but it seems to have gone up. I'm really not sure why it's so high. I've shopped around and rates are about the same wherever I go. For full coverage I'm lucky to find anything for $400/mo. If anyone has any ideas on how I can drop this down or what I've done for it to be so expensive, I'm all ears. Driving is not optional in my area, so I can't be without it. Thanks in advance.

What insurance to get for car theft during a move?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:28 AM PDT

Hello! Total insurance noob here. I am currently planning to make my first big move across the country via car with all the personal belongings I care about in the world. Total, they probably add up to somewhere around 4500 - 5000 dollars.

The trip would take about 3-4 days, and a few of the hotels I have been considering (as well as my apartment at my end destination) have reviews of multiple car break-ins in one night. I'm not specifically worried about the reviews since car break-ins can happen pretty much anywhere and anytime, but considering this is my first time with "all my eggs in one basket", I'm pretty nervous.

I read that car insurance does not cover "any belongings that fall out of the car if turned upside down" and that renter's and homeowners insurance would be the way to go? However, the renter's insurance plan I am planning to get for my apartment did not have any mentions of vehicles. They only had add-ons for jewelry, water, and unemployment.

What would my best bet be if I want to imagine all my belongings stolen from my car at night? Either forever, or ideally for a week's time?

    Thanks!

PS: I put this under the "auto insurance" tag because I figure there might be lots of people like me who don't know.

    Property and causality exams

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:03 AM PDT

I'll make it short, I have 12 days to complete my Kaplan course and take my exam. This seems short because of how much information there is. I have 0 insurance experience and I'm panicking a bit because my job relies on me passing. All tips are invited. Thank you.

How to confirm what a renter's insurance policy covers?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:56 PM PDT

I'm looking for a new provider, but I have a few things that I need covered that I feel like are pretty niche.

How would I check that a policy will cover them? I need coverage from any damage that might come from a bidet, an RO/DI filter, and aquariums. It needs to cover damage to the property, but not necessarily my own stuff. My landlord requires that the first two be professionally installed, so there's no issue there.

I would call around, but last time I did that I hardly had an hour of peace from phone calls for two months. Is there a way to check what different companies cover without risking that?

Water Damage to walls in apartment - what should I say

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:42 AM PDT

I have had ongoing water damage to the ceiling and walls of my apartment in my coop apartment. It started 8 years ago and was fixed off and on (never REALLY fixed) by the management maintenance. Recently, in the last year, it's gotten really bad (they tried to fix something on someone's terrace upstairs and it redirected the water) and now my wall and ceiling is bubbling and plaster is crumbling on one area of my wall. The maintenance can't figure out where it's coming from.

Question for insurance people. If I report it to my insurance to get it fixed what's going to happen? Will insurance just fix it? What about the underlying problem? I am worried about mold, electrical damage etc., Should I say it started 8 years ago or that it JUST started? What is the best way to report to minimize my financial outlay (beyond increasing rates etc.,)? I've never claimed on my homeowners' insurance - but have had it for over a decade.

    Thanks for your advice!

    Car insurance question

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:54 PM PDT

Got car insurance in august for my vehicle. In 2018 November I drove while suspended and got a ticket. This has been reflected in my licenses for years and about to disappear in November . Can I cancel my auto policy in December to get a lower rate… or do I need to wait for my policy to finish?

I had a minor wreck yesterday and my new 2022 Genesis G70 got a scratch all the way on the left side, is it worth it to reach out to an adjuster?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:05 AM PDT

I hit a rail on the highway trying to avoid a large object on the road, the whole left side now has a long scratch from front bumper to rear bumper.

I haven't done anything yet or contacted my auto insurance, I do have full coverage with $500 deductable. I have no idea what the cost will be to fix it yet (auto shops closed today), what would be the best approach now? Should I already reach out for an insurance adjuster or is it not worth it?

Fear of being sued due to a at-fault collision a year ago

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:33 PM PDT

Like the title mentions, I was involved in an at-fault collision exactly a year ago this month. I sold the beater car to a family member that lives in a different state. I am currently in California. I've still been making my payments to the car's insurance company out of fear that I will no longer be represented by them. My insurance company has stated that she lawyered up and went to the ER the same day of the crash stating she had back pain. I check in periodically to see if the claim is closed and its still opened, so I am assuming she is slapping medical bills on the claim to sue me for. I am lawyered up as well and had him call their attorney to see the updates but they won't answer our calls. To get back to the point, should I continue these payments to the insurance or can I stop paying the insurance bill?

    Is my car totaled?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:41 AM PDT

Was in an accident yesterday turning left at a bad intersection. My front right bumper and fender are gone with some damage to the grill. My main worry is that my driver's airbag and right side door airbag deployed. I'm in PA with Progressive and a 2019 CX 5 Sport

Here are 2 pics. Thanks for any help
