Opinion: investing in cryptocurrency has nothing to do with entrepreneurship and any comments suggesting it should result in a ban

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 04:32 AM PDT

Seriously. This place is awash with crypto bros now. You're just gamblers. Go away. This sub is for creating and running a business, not gambling.

Edit: taking all your money and dumping it in crypto, or any stock, is just investing. That's not a business. Investing=/=entrepreneurship. Investing might be a part of your business though. But if that's the only thing you're doing with your money, you're just an investor and you should go to a different sub.

Convincing other people to let you invest their money and in exchange for a cut IS a business, and relevant to r/entrepreneur. I can't believe I have to spell it out for some people 🤦‍♂️

If you’ve got a lot of ideas but need an extra push, here ya go.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:21 AM PDT

    So, this is pretty cool.

Tldr; .Store Domains is giving away a pretty ridiculous set of prizes for entrepreneurs/wantpreneurs that pitch an online store idea on Instagram. It's sponsored by Shopify. All explained on their site here. (Called "Idea to Store")

Seems like a good fit for anyone with e-commerce ambitions or ideas to get some validation, exposure, and a chance at funding.

Few of the things from the site:

    • $30k in cash prizes
    • Q&A with Seth Godin
    • A feature on an Amazon Prime TV show
    • A membership to the BossBabe community

Basically you fill out a form, share an idea for an online business that would use a .store domain name (redditshirts.store), and make an Instagram post that tags them. You can then win weekly prizes or get picked to pitch their influencer panel of judges for the bigger prizes.

    Anyone try this?

Question: Do I need a GC license for EV charger install?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:33 PM PDT

Hello - wondering if anyone has experience with contractors licenses (in CA specifically). Any feedback is definitely appreciated!

I'm interested in starting a local company (Southern California) to install EV chargers in people's homes and ideally would like to grow to install charging stations for business/apartment complexes as well. The plan to start would be for me to do an initial consultation at a prospective customer's home and gather all the information needed to do the work as well as determine what charger they'd like to purchase/install. From there I would aim to purchase the charger and sub out the actual install work directly to a licensed and bonded electrician.

Am I required to personally have a general contractor's license if the customer is paying me directly for the service but I'm not actually performing any improvement work?

    Thank you!

App Idea- where do I start?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:44 PM PDT

Dipping my toes in. Any books or other resources you'd recommend?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 12:21 PM PDT

This past summer I joined the great resignation, and ended my 14 year career cooking in restaurants. I've been doing trail work and other general labor since, but I still really enjoy cooking. So I've been toying with the idea of starting a meal service or catering gig on the side.

My friends and family are all behind me on this. They think it's a great path for me. However, it all seems like a lot. I'd like to get more resources and much more research. Does anyone have any experience with starting a food business from scratch? Or how about books on starting a business (specifically in the food industry)?

Essentially I'm asking, where the hell do I start?

Hiring is really difficult in an early-stage startup, How do I do it?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:33 AM PDT

    greetings,

i am an entrepreneur starting my first medium size venture/startup/experiment.

i don't want to sound all ranty or something -- there's a funny irony happening with me and my so-called startup!

i am building a product about social validation & it's slightly inclined towards recruitment (can't disclose much about it!) so now as i have to expand my team for better development and completion of the MVP, hire new folks, and work with them is so freaking hard!

i am making a product around it, but i don't have the resource to even get things onto the ground as of now, it's ironic but sustainability comes with a pattern; trying to find one!

so any feedback on how should i work this around? where to find the right people who could fit in the culture i am building rn?

    School projects that encourage entrepreneurship

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 08:04 AM PDT

I study at a federal school in Brazil and I need to make project recommendations that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation for the school to offer to its students. It can be clubs, events, competitions, extension and extracurricular projects or something like that. The idea is that it is something practical that encourages the entrepreneurial side of students and offers them the opportunity to get started in the area, get to know and learn more about the subject. The projects can have a financial investment, but of course the smaller, the more viable it will be.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do you know any other school that has something similar?

Starting a business and hiring myself as a W2 employee?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:55 PM PDT

I currently work in a field where I go through a staffing agency. They hire me as a W2 employee and charge the third party $X/hr for me to work with the third party. They take 40-60% and pay me the rest.

If I was to start my own agency, can I hire myself as an employee? Would it be best to be an LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp? I would also want to hire out my friends that also work in this field. I would be the only owner.

A quick google search showed me that I can…

    A) not hire myself as a W2 employee B) I could hire myself as a W2 employee.

    So I'm confused.

Here's How Ramon Van Meer Took A $300k Small Business to $35 Million

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:50 PM PDT

Especially in this subreddit, most folk seem to think you need to start from scratch. I guess that's the dream right, start and build a unicorn-like Zucks and Jack.

I've made most of my wealth for buying and growing small businesses and don't think you need to start one yourself.

In a few short years, Ramon Van Meer has built himself an 8 figure net worth by simply buying small businesses and growing them. He broke down how he does this on a recent MFM podcast which I have summarised here.

He does, exactly what I've been doing. It's not necessarily easy but it is simple. Find small businesses that already have product/market fit and sales traction but certain parts of their business suck.

For example, I brought a hair salon that was growing fast and didn't have a website or social media. 3 Years later I exited and 5x'd my investment.

I brought a run-down and poorly managed gym for $120k, 4'ish years ago. It's now worth close to $ 1 million.

Ramon has done this way better than I have but I believe this is a legitimate and much more likely path to wealth for most people.

What do you think? Is there anyone here doing the same?

Business ideas inspired by recent investments of Midas List VCs

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:15 AM PDT

    🔮 Background

    • Even if you have zero interest in playing the VC game, it can make a lot of sense to keep an eye on the ecosystem.
    • VCs spent a lot of time talking to smart people or reading research reports, and they have access to all kinds of resources outsiders don't.
    • Top VCs have a good track record of spotting the next big wave before anyone else.
    • For example, VCs were investing heavily in AI and blockchain startups long before the mainstream started to pay attention.
    • But of course VCs are not just good at predicting technological trends but also at spotting the next unicorn.
    • This is especially interesting if you're planning to strap to yourself to the back of someone else's rocket
    • So, what are VCs investing in right now? And most importantly, what are related opportunities you can pounce on? Let's dive in.

    📊 The Data

    • All publicly known investments made by VCs on the Midas List of the world's best venture capitalists during the past 90 days.

    🔥 Highlights

    Chronosphere

    • Chronosphere seems like the most promising bet on the list with three investments from Midas List VCs (Lee Fixel, Brian Singerman, Anton Levy).
    • They recently raised 200M in a Series C.
    • The declared goal of the New York based company is to "develop a scalable, reliable, and customizable monitoring solution for cloud-native applications".

    The Org

    • The Org looks at first glance like a typically Indie Hacker project.
    • However, they recently raised a $20M Series B with investments from Sequoia Capital and Founders Fund.
    • I mean, why the heck do you need so much money for a software that creates pretty org charts?
    • Apparently there's some secret masterplan going on (something related to recruiting) and it will definitely be fun to watch it unfold.

    AppsForBharat

    • AppsForBharat is a product studio "focused on building apps for spiritual and devotional needs of Indian users" that recently raised a $10M Series A from investors like Saurabh Gupta and Scott Shleifer.
    • Bharat is the name for India in various Indian languages
    • So far they've released one app called Sri Mandir.
    • This flagship app can probably best described as some gamified Hindu version of Calm.
    • According to their website, the app already has 1M install even though there is no iOS version yet.

    Bzaar

    • Bzaar is an online B2B cross-border marketplace for products like home improvements, fashion, cookware, bakeware, etc for small businesses.
    • Their current focus is connecting retailers in the US with over 50 export-ready manufacturers in India. Think: AliBaba for India.
    • They recently raised a $4M seed round, including money from Midas List nominee Lee Fixel.

    Cord

    • Cord offers an API to add Slack-like collaboration features to any app.
    • They recently raised a $17.5M Series A, including money from Jan Hammer (Index Ventures).

    Ultrahuman

    • Ultrahuman describes itself as the "world's most advanced metabolic fitness platform."
    • To me it seems like a mix between Levels and Whoop.
    • They recently raised a $17.5M Series B round, which included money from Scott Shleifer.

    🔑 Key Observations

    • The dominant industries top VCs are betting on are AI, fintech, and health care, closely followed by cryptocurrency startups, analytics tools, and biotech startups.
    • Surprisingly unpopular are e-learning startups, mobile apps, and social networks. For each of these categories, just three startups appear on the list. The only true social networks are CallIn (social podcasting) and Cent (social NFT marketplace), wheras Karrot (the third startup labeled as a social network) is primarily a marketplace with some social aspects.
    • The sustainability trend is still going strong with startups like Sourceful ("help businesses find environmentally sustainable packaging for their products") and Misfits Market (subscription box service for organically sourced produce) getting funding from top VCs.
    • Given all the hype around social shopping in Asia, it's definitely noteworthy that just one related startup appears on the list: Flip, which is a social shopping app that connects customers to beauty products through video.

    • While San Fransisco is the most common location for startups on the list (19.2%) it's not that far ahead. New York (15%) comes surprisingly close. At the third spot, we have Bangalore and London (both 4.2%). Despite all the hype there's not a single Miami startup on the list.

    • By far the most popular domain endings are .com (68.6%), .io (7.1%), ai (7.1%) and .co (5.7%).

    ☁️ Opportunities

    • Brainstorm which popular software is still lacking a proper multiplayer mode.
    • Figma and Google Docs famously did this for Photoshop and Microsoft Word.
    • Now with Cord's API it's easier than ever to apply this playbook, even in niches.
    • The list of the most viewed apps at Alternativeto.net is a great place to start. (Look out for a missing "Team Collaboration" tag.)
    • Brainstorm what other proven playbook or feature still needs to be unlocked for the masses.
    • Cord does it for the singleplayer -> multiplayer playbook.
    • Similarly, thanks to Agora anyone can, just like Clubhouse, add real-time audio and video to their app.
    • Start building analytics tools for sellers on emerging marketplaces.
    • JungleScout is a sales analytics tool for Amazon sellers that's making millions in yearly revenue and recently raised $110M.
    • Similar tools exist for all other established marketplaces like Etsy, Ebay, and Alibaba.
    • But for newer marketplaces there's typically no such tools yet and hence and opportunity to build the go-to resource.
    • Interesting marketplaces VCs are betting on right now are Aalto, Tundra, Centand Bzaar.
    • Start building automation tools for sellers on emerging marketplaces.
    • My favorite example in this category is Closet Tools ($26k MRR) which automates common tasks for Poshmark powersellers.
    • Similar tools can be built for new marketplaces like Grailed (basically Poshmark for Guys which recently raised $60M including money from Index Ventures) and Karrot ("hyperlocal secondhand marketplace").
    • Whoop for the Apple Watch.
    • As mentioned above, Ultrahuman recently raised $17.5M to build a Levelscompetitor.
    • Basically they want to build a WHOOP-like app that generates insights from blood glucose data instead of just heart rate data (which is what WHOOP does).
    • I've talked about this opportunity before, but a much lower-hanging related fruit is to build an app like WHOOP (now valued at more than $3B) for the Apple Watch.
    • Unlike what Ultrahuman is planning to do this doesn't require any additional hardware.
    • There is still no great app that takes the data every Apple Watch user has access to (HRV in particular) and translates it into actionable insights ala WHOOP.
    • Even though I know nothing about iOS development I'm very, very tempted to build it myself, primarily because I'd be it's first happy users and know there are many people like me.
    • Built an app at the intersection of spiritual offerings and gaming.
    • AppsForBharat is doing this successfully for Hindus.
    • What would an app like their flaship Sri Mandi for other religions look like?
    • Build ResQ for X.
    • ResQ is an all-in-one app to request, track and pay for a restaurant's repair and maintenance needs.
    • They recently raised a $39M Series A from investors like Jeff Jordan.
    • What other highly fragmented industries have regular maintenance needs?
    • Gyms and flower shops are just two examples I'm seeing through the window of the coffee shop I'm sitting in right now.

I often get a tad too excited when I'm writing a report like this. This time was no different and I ended up coding VC Watcher. It's a completely free newsletter that keeps subscribers in the loop about recent investments by top VCs. (You can find all of my past reports here.)

    Thanks,

    Jakob

Limited size of USPS flat rate boxes

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:11 PM PDT

It seems that most large items won't be able to fit in USPS flat rate boxes, even though the advertised weight limit is 13 ounce - 70 pounds. You will seldomly be able to find items weighing over 10 lb that will be able to fit in those flat rate boxes. However, USPS will only allow you to use flat rates if you are using their flat rate boxes to ship. Am I missing something here, or is this intended?

If you use your own container to ship, the shipping fee can be anywhere from $7.95-$322.25 depending on weight and zone. And zones can make a huge difference in the shipping fee. For example, if you're shipping a 10 lb package, it can cost anywhere from $14.40 to $83.35 depending on zones. Is there any tricks I'm missing here?

The Principal-Agent Problem is everywhere- in business and in life

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:11 AM PDT

As Naval Ravikant has rightly pointed out-

"Almost all human behaviour can be explained by incentives. The study of signalling is seeing what people do despite what they say. People are much more honest with their actions than they are with their words. You have to get the incentives right to get people to behave correctly." -

⚔️ The principal-agent problem is a conflict in priorities between a person or entity (the "principal") and the representative (the "agent") authorized to act on their behalf.

This problem occurs in scenarios where agents have incentives to act in their own best interests, which are contrary to those of their principals.

😨 Did you know it was the underlying cause of the crash of 2008?

📖 I spent a couple of days last week understanding the principal-agent problem in detail and the impact in our everyday life and distilled my learnings into this blog post.

    Check it out: Principal-Agent Problem

Have 2 months of holiday starting next week and will like to partner with some focused entrepreneur to build something.

I tried few of my ideas earlier but I think i am too biased as a developer.

So any small business or SME of different domain what's to build something new or wants to automate their manual work, let discuss.

Maybe we can build something new. 🙂

Pitch deck review and warm introduction?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 11:28 AM PDT

    Hi fellow entrepreneurs,

Just wondering if this subreddit is a good place to find fellow founders who are kind enough to review my pitch deck and if they like what I'm working on, we can build up to warm introductions to investors in their network.

This lockdown thing sure has changed how networking is done.

DM if you're interested. I can share the company's mission here:

The goal is to meld behavioral science with gamification to create an immersive & hyperpersonalized productivity tool that enables users to protect & gain from the most important things in life — health, relationships, passions and personal data.

We are aiming for a future where communities of people are better in a myriad of ways - smarter, happier, bolder, and more compassionate.
