Legal Advice FBI is requesting to interview me

FBI is requesting to interview me

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 10:26 AM PST

Back ground I am a permanent resident of the United States and immigrated from an Arab country. Yesterday the FBI came to a previous residents of mine looking for me. They called me today and want to meet soon. They said they were going around interviewing people from certain areas of the world with certain immigration statuses. I was an asylum seeker but I now have become a permanent resident after marriage to my spouse. Is anyone familiar with these visits and what they could mean? Is it serious enough to where I need an attorney present?

Edit: Also I am not Muslim and have not ever gone to a mosque. I don't often associate with other from my region of the world. I can not say what exact country I am from because they aggressively pursue those who speak up.

Was Dismissed From Nursing School Clinical Rotation For Self Reporting Covid Symptoms

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 07:09 PM PST

I came down with covid symptoms the night before an in person clinical at a nursing home. I had fever, chills, etc. I emailed the instructor and she told me to stay home and offered make up hours. Now, I just received an email from the Dean that I am being dismissed, getting an F, and can't finish the quarter. I'm 4 months away from graduating. I was following their covid policy and thought I was doing the right thing. I asked her what I did wrong and she said "nothing". But had I broken the rules and showed up I would have exposed hundreds of people to illness. If I get an F I am in danger of losing my financial aide not to mention the money I will have to pay for another quarter. Do I have any options?

    Edit: I'm in MN

I received a criminal arraignment in the mail for shoplifting - I have never even shopped at that store

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 10:12 AM PST

I believe it's possible my sister may have given my information when she was accused of shoplifting or something to that effect (she has a history of drug use and shoplifting charges, she was released for shoplifting only a few weeks prior to this charge), because otherwise I have no idea how or why I would receive this accusatory letter.

I live in Tucson, Arizona. I have an absolutely squeeky clean record - not so much as a parking ticket. I'm a full time student, I'm raising my 3 adopted nieces and nephew and I take care of my sick mom. I'm hoping these characteristics will be at all helpful, as well as the fact that I'm 26 with no criminal history, but I have no idea.

I just had the first hearing where I got the date I am purported to have committed this shoplifting, but other than that I have no other information and I don't qualify to have a public defender appointed to me.

What is my course of action here? I feel like I'm way over my head.

Court Keeps Pushing Court Date (Going in 2years Now)

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:51 AM PST

Was given a ticket in CT for an infraction. Wanted to appeal and waiting for the court date. The date keeps getting pushed out. Today went to the court house (a 3 hour drive) to find out it got pushed back to April and no letter was sent out to our home. Is there a statute of limitations for this case? Ticket was given November of 2019. Traffic ticket Infraction is minor but wanted to appeal. Any advice on how to handle this? Do we go home and wait until April?

Edit: The court case is being held in the Superior Court House in CT. So it's the state court. It was a state trooper not a local police.

How can I get a restraining order against my family?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:31 AM PST

I live in Southern California. I do not have a great relationship with my family, and after my parents showed up to my college dorm a few years ago and got physically abusive with me I have avoided contact with them. I have been moving every year so they wouldn't be able to find me (I am in my mid 20's if it matters). However they were still able to find me despite all my efforts and showed up at my door. They later admitted that an "attorney friend"/Private investigator found my info on the internet, but I couldn't find anything linking my recent address to me.

I refused to engaged with them and told my roommates not to either. My parents said they wouldn't leave until I talked to them, but last time this happened they trapped me in their car for hours so I knew not to entertain the idea. I called the cops several times and when they finally showed up they said they couldn't do anything but just ask them to leave. I'm worried about going to and from work tomorrow.

I don't know what to do. I looked it up and I can't file a normal restraining order because they're family, and if I file it as domestic abuse I have to have evidence from the past 30 days, which obviously I don't have if I've been avoiding them for years. I will contact my local courthouse tomorrow for info but I don't expect much. I don't want to be worried for the rest of my life that they'll show up any minute at my door again. It's frustrating to keep moving and I really don't want to leave the job I have right now and I hate to be freaking out my roommates with this. If they really got a private investigator to find me, I don't know how I can ever live peacefully. I don't even know if they're allowed to hire a PI on me, it's not like I'm a missing person or something.

Is there any advice how I can get them to leave me alone forever? A restraining order was my only hope but I don't think I can even file one.

[CA] I told my landlord the deductions he made from my security deposit weren’t fair, now he’s saying I actually owe him more.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 07:31 AM PST

Going to try to make this short.

My landlord sent me back my security deposit (late) with all these deductions that I know aren't my responsibility. Like new locks, new paint, a new toilet seat.

I contacted him and told him those things aren't my responsibility to pay as they weren't damaged. He tells me they are my responsibility. I tell him they're not.

He tells me they are and because I've been so persistent he remembered all these other things he has to charge me for. He doesn't list new things, he just states he's going to charge me more for things he already made deductions for. So now he says that I actually owe him money.

Obviously I don't think he has a leg to stand on and it seems like text book retaliation.

He's saying if I don't mail him back my check he's going to cancel it. But he also wrote on my check "if this check is endorsed it releases me from all additional claims"

Is what he's doing illegal? I feel like he's trying to intimidate me to either return my check or sign the check and deposit it and "release him from all future claims."

Do you think if I went to small claims they would see he's acting in bad faith?

I also feel like he's holding the security deposit that he agreed I'm entitled to hostage unless I release him of all additional claims.

    Thanks!!

    Airline changed my flight.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:44 AM PST

Hi everyone, I would really appreciate some guidance with a matter im dealing with.

The matter relates to an airline called Rwandair. Its an airline based in Rwanda. The airline is fairly reputable and a member of the SkyTrax group.

What happened is that they have changed my flight departure to another date (the day before the original date) and this is causing issues for me because I have hotels already booked. The hotels are not refundable. The have told me that I can get a refund and rebook with another airline. The issue with getting a refund is that I booked this flight a couple of months ago and since then prices have increased for all airlines flying this route. If I were to get a refund and rebook with another airline I would be further out of pocket.

Can someone please advise me what my options may be. I understand this may be difficult given there may be differences in laws.

    IT professional Exempt Status

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 04:27 AM PST

    Location: California

I've been working with my employer since 2019 as a full-time salary exempt employee.

I had a discussion with my boss that kind of triggered me looking into what Exempt status is in California.

I googled today the stipulations for that and it seems there is a pretty strict requirement on it, but I'm confused. Is the minimum base pay for a computer professional with exempt status higher than just double minimum wage?

Because from what I'm reading it seems like in 2021 the base pay was $98,907.70 which is about 12k short of what I make now.

The other issue is based on my job duties I don't think I'm supposed to be exempt status but I'm unsure.

My concern here is that they told us we don't have to track hours at all anymore and so I haven't been. So if it turns out I'm classified incorrectly and I'm supposed to be earning OT and paid lunches then I've basically been missing out on it for at least 2 1/2 years

Can anyone help clarify this situation for me? Is this something I should be reaching out to a labor attorney about?

Attempt to cancel a travel nurse contract, recruiter says I will owe company $11,000

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 05:30 AM PST

    Directed here by r/TravelNursing

I signed a contract with a travel company to work at a hospital out of state then decided to cancel the contract. The recruiter then messages me saying the following:

"Per your contract. for every hour you do not work, its a $25 penalty fee. $25 x 36 hours weekly = $900 $900 weekly penalty fee x 13 weeks (total contract) = $11700"

Then the recruiter sends me a screen shot of the contract part I have typed out below:

"If the employee works less than the agreed upon total hours per Week in Schedule A, the company will assess $25 nonperformance penalty for each hour the employee works less than the total hours per week requirement, unless prohibited by state or federal law. This penalty will be deducted from the employees next scheduled compensation payment. However, employee will be paid for each hour in a work week the minimum hourly wage required by state or federal law"

The job isn't starting until December and I haven't even finished the on boarding. This is not my first travel assignment or my first cancel, and I have never heard such a thing. Do they have a legal hold on me? Am I on the line for thousands of dollars if I don't do the contract?

Can employer force you to take vacation time to do work? (NV)

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 08:39 PM PST

I learned about this earlier today, I'll try my best to keep any identifiable information out of this post.

I work for a mobile structure company that usually produces sheds, workshops, and gazebos in a shop but due to how many people want custom build sometimes we build them on the customers property. We were doing one such job today. Lunch time rolls around and we were all bullshitting and talking and my supervisor let it slip that the company owners want him to take vacation time to do on-site builds as he is in a salaried position and they consider on&sites a side gig. Everyone said that what they were doing to him was a dirtbag thing to do and probably illegal but all he had to say about it was some form of "it is what it is" and he isn't the kind of guy to rock the boat in any way shape or form Is this legal what they are doing to my supervisor? Any sources on the law would help. He is a legitimately good guy and I want to help him how I can even if he won't help himself.

If it helps in any way, all payments from on-site builds go to the company and we all get paid for them on our regular paycheck. Thanks in advance for any help.

Car accident - Guilty Party insurance is confusing me please help

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 05:55 AM PST

    Morning all (in USA EST),

In June 2021 I was in an accident. I was T-boned by a box truck. My 2022 Honda Odyssey had about 26K worth of damage and instead of totaling the vehicle was repaired with genuine EOM parts. The process took 5 months and the guilty party's insurance provided me a rental car while I waited for my car to be repaired. Fast forward to last week. The insurance company and I have been going back and forth to figure out a diminished value total for my vehicle. I took the car to 3 dealerships but none wanted to provide any documentation to reflect the trade in deal. In short we settled for about 3K. To make matters worse, health wise, I was diagnosed with back arthritis and a bulging disc. I have, to this point, made no mention of this to the insurance company but cannot figure they'd care at this point. My MRI was in October and the accident was in June so I figured they'd just not give a crap. I am concerned that if I sign the document I will not be able to go after the driver if this back thing gets worse. In short, can someone help me figure this out or provide advice/resources to do so. My insurance company has been unhelpful. TYIA.

    Link to doc - https://imgur.com/a/LuX0MSs

Edit for specifics - My insurance policy is for Massachusetts and the accident occurerd in Pennsylvania.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 01:11 PM PST

Normal I would not complain about things but I am in need of advice, I work construction have most of my life and never had this issue this bad. We have a van were we park that will take us to are work area since we are not allowed to park there (normal practice) what is not normal is fitting 18-20 people in a van fit for 12-14 we are having to sit on each other lay on each other and so forth. They will not get another van nor will they allow two trips the walk from the parking lot to were we work is 3.2 miles.

    Is this legal?

What can I do about this if anything?

Is this normal practice in this state?

    Educational Content On YouTube

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 05:24 AM PST

    Hi All,

I have a quick question I was hoping to have answered. I am located in Canada and create educational YouTube videos on math, science and programming. I create the scripts, voice-over, drawings and everything myself. I am just curious to what extent should I be worried about a textbook company or university trying to take my videos down? As I make videos similar to Khan Academy, I was just wondering if someone can teach themselves anything and then create a video about it? The material I teach is widely available through the internet I just compile a given topic and present it in an informative and concise manner.

Can a doctors office legally force me to go to one specific place for a test

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 07:38 AM PST

I need to get an mri and was told by my doctor to have it done at a hospital where I've had previous tests, this is the hospital I want to go to. About a month later the staff at my Drs office is refusing to send an authorization request to my insurance unless I go to a different hospital that they work with and is telling me that is my only choice. Someone had mentioned to me that it is illegal due to a patients right to choose but I'm not familiar with it.

My dad isn’t on my 1994 AZ birth certificate

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 06:39 PM PST

I am mostly curious why. He and my mom were married before I was conceived/are still married. He had two sons with an ex before me so I wonder if that could be why? I just googled it again and I saw it could lead to issues if I wanted to collect on any death insurance claims or inheritance. This is not something I am worried about, but it makes me wonder if there are any scenarios where this could be an issue for me or my siblings.

Is it illegal to take my furniture when I move out?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 12:55 AM PST

Hey all! Don't really know where to ask this, but figured I'd try my luck here :) I (18F) have been planning on moving out for quite some time now. My parents and I don't have a very good relationship; the living conditions at home are consistently emotionally and verbally abusive. Hence the wanting to move out part. Here's the issue:

I'm planning on moving into a small apartment with my boyfriend. I don't want to tell my parents because they are already very controlling over me financially, and I don't think they'd take me suddenly leaving very well. I was planning to move out on a morning that they were at work, since I don't have much, but then I got worried that maybe they'd try to take legal action against me. Is it legal for me to take furniture bought for my room to my new apartment? I am talking strictly items from my room here. I'm not taking the dining room table or something, just my bedroom set, my clothes, TV, etc.

Can they call it theft? Can they take any legal action against me for trying to move out and sever ties with them? I live in Alberta, if it makes any difference with laws and whatnot. Thank you all <3

I live in the USA and I consider myself a freelance writer/blogger. I was just having fun one night and decided to type out a story on r/nosleep not thinking anything of it. The post got significant traction on my other account and about a month later I see a video on YouTube where my story is narrated, and it has 3 million views. I was happy that it got that much exposure but I would like to see some compensation for this or to have it removed. I don't know where to star.

My licence has been suspended because I was pulled over and given a written warning, which the DMV is now saying is a 3 years over due speeding ticket.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 10:54 PM PST

About three years ago I got pulled over for the first and so far only time. It was for speeding. I was pulled over by a Vermont state sheriff. I wasn't going very fast over the limit and the officer gave me a written warning.

I remember it very clearly because I was 19 at the time and still living with my parents and when my mother found out I got a written warning she was extremely mad at me. I kept the slip that the officer gave me for a long time but I've moved two times since then and I've lost it. I very miticulusly studied all of the paperwork (which was one small slip of paper with WARNING NOTICE clearly printed on it) to make sure that I didn't have to pay any fine because I didn't have a whole lot of money at the time. I still don't.

The other day I received a letter from the DMV saying that my licence has been suspended because of an unpaid speeding ticket. I called the DMV who were only able to tell me the date I supposedly got the speeding ticket and after hearing my story they told me to call the judicial bureau. I then called the judicial bureau who wasn't actually able to tell me anything the DMV couldn't and told me to call the Vermont state police. I then again called the Vermont state police and explained my situation to the guy who picked up the phone. He (kind of rudely) told me that I'm going to have to just suck it up and pay the ticket because the officer who supposedly gave me that ticket is retired. He then transfered me to the current sheriff who wasn't there so I left a message explaining my situation.

From the looks of things, no one I contacted is going to do anything about this. Not only do I have to pay the ticket, but now I have to pay a late fee and a fee to get my licence unsuspended. I am more than willing to pay the ticket because I was speeding that day and I will own up to my mistake, but I feel like I shouldn't have to pay those fees, because had I actually gotten a ticket that day, I would have paid it on time.

Am I screwed? Or is there something that I can do?

Is my dentist legally responsible for a crown falling off after only 4 months?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 03:44 AM PST

I have spent tens of thousands of dollars at this particular dentist because I have some serious dental issues and needed a ton of work done. I've always had dental issues my entire life.

I have never had a whole crown completely fall off by itself (wasn't even eating anything weird) after only 4 months! This is a porcelain crown that I paid almost 2k to have made.

Now my dentist is telling me that I will probably need a new one made and this one no longer fits (the office was shut down for a while during the hurricane we had here. I was stuck out of town because my house was destroyed in the storm).

I was even charged for the visit to examine the fallen off crown, which I thought was pretty unbelievable already. I had no idea I would be financially responsible for something I already paid thousands for that failed after a few months...

TLDR; Is the dentist legally responsible for a crown falling off after only 4 months, or am I?!

But the date they gave me was 9/29 and the day I missed was 9/9 I don't believe this is my fault am I going to jail? And Why am I being charged with a FTA if this is family court ? I never got a warrant for my arrest and have had contact with the courts/law since then and haven't been arrested.

[CO] Son's school says they will call the police on 8 year old with Autism

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:56 PM PST

My son is 8 years old, in 3rd grade. He has high functioning autism and ADHD. He has a 504 plan. When we first started going to this school, they indicated he didn't need a 504 plan because he was too high functioning.

In Kindergarten he eloped from school and ran home. We are a 10 minute walk from school. I work from home and made him go back immediately. This got the school motivated on getting his 504 plan going. We worked with the school and his therapists and things improved.

Until this year. This year has gone very poorly. He struggles to tell me why, but he absolutely hates school this year. He's left his classroom several times, and managed to make it all the way home twice. This year his school also has a new principal.

We had a 504 review meeting with the school recently to see what accommodations we can make for him and agreed on a plan. (Getting an autism specialist involved, perhaps having an IEP, etc.). The principal is super concerned about him eloping from school, and rightly so. We made some incentive structures for him to stay in class. That improved things for a bit. However today, after he eloped for the 2nd time this year, she told him next time she would call the police.

I understand her concern about safety, however he's 8 and has autism and ADHD. If he interacts with the police in a confrontational manner I'm terrified he might struggle with them, disobey, even hit them to escape.

What can I do? Do I need a lawyer? If I do, where can I find a good one that does education or special needs or something like that? Should I try to de-escalate with the principal or stop communicating except through an attorney?

Should I keep him home from school to prevent further escalations until I have help?

    Thanks

Landlord is not fixing broken mailbox access (Seattle, WA)

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 10:08 PM PST

Seattle, WA - our apartment complex had the lockbox that held the mail key (for building entrance to deliver mail) stolen in April of 2021. My boyfriend and I moved into the apartment in August 2021, and the management company said that the key would be replaced by soon. It's November, and the key has still not been replaced, and we are still not receiving mail.

In the time that we have been at this apartment, the management company has not done anything to help us receive our mail. USPS is not holding our mail, and the management company refuses to pay for PO boxes. We have to walk about a mile to the PO box. One of the other building tenants said that the landlord has to be the one to pick up and deliver our mail everyday. Is this true?

We have emailed the management company and they said that the issue had been fixed months ago (it wasn't. No one in the building is receiving mail). USPS has said that the issue is not fixed and that they do not have access to deliver mail (because of the missing key).

Our questions are: is it legal for the management company to not provide us easy access to our mail? Are they able to refuse to pay for a PO box? What should our next steps be in trying to get mail deliveries?

Is it worth filing suit on guy who almost killed my boyfriend.

    Posted: 18 Nov 2021 12:52 AM PST

My boyfriend (17 at time 19 now) was assaulted at a fair (assaulter 16, 18 now) the system has completely failed us. BF had 12 fractures in his face, was in hospital for a week, and was slapped with a $27,000 bill because his insurance labeled it cosmetic surgery because the doctor who did it was a plastic surgeon. This was in NO WAY a plastic surgery, he had plates screwed into his face. Because the defendant plead guilty he was convicted as a minor, sealing his records. The retribution hearing was this month but because his probation officer labeled him "rehabilitated" he was taken off parole and the hearing canceled. No Attorney will take our case and the statutory of limitations is up in February. We live in S California. Any advice? We are looking into a civil suit but if there really is no point we'd like to know.
