2 months in at big 4, I quit

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 12:37 PM PST

Put in my two weeks notice. Engagement i am working on seems like its heading into fuckville, everything is lagging on top I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to be doing.. For the past two months I've seen a considerable decline in my life and my personal attitude and it took me a while to accept that I need to step back and reassess my life. Feel bad leaving like I failed and I'm a dumb ass for not being able to keep up.not sure what I'm going to do but I guess studying for the cpa meanwhile I explore job opportunities will help. Any advice to someone who career suicided themselves from accounting?

I just got a 15K increase (switching companies) and I'd like to be humbled.

    Are you guys getting raises?

Are you guys getting raises like now for inflation? Should I be expecting one? I saw that SS benefits have increased.

What are some of your side hustles while working in accounting, if any?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 08:13 AM PST

I just started my first job at a local firm in June. When I first started, I was trained by the girl that worked here before me and she mentioned that she makes charcuterie boards and that it really was her passion and was a nice side hustle away from the office and was nice to make a little cash on the side. It got me thinking that maybe I should also find my side hustle. I have no idea what it would be or if I would even go through with it, but I just wanted to see what you people do on the side.

    Burnt Out, What Next?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 09:59 AM PST

Whelp, I finally hit burn out. Most of my team has quit, and I'm now almost a 1 man show for a major company's AR. Hiring is moving at a glacial pace and the manager and director that I saw as a mentor/friend just put in their two weeks last week.

I'm working 20 hour days, I have a young child and husband that goes away for work, and I'm still trying to study for my CPA on top of all this. My month end close is ridiculous and there's no end in sight. I've lost all passion for my job after busting my ass and automating a whole bunch of processes only netted me "met expectations" and a 5.2% raise with 6.1% inflation. I also found out I'm underpaid compared to others at my level and got screwed out of a promotion. I can work 24 hour days and still not finish everything I need to, and I'm sick and tired of frustrated people when it's not my fault that I'm doing the work of 4 people.

My senior director is planning a quick "check in" with me and I think at this point they're worried I'm about to jump ship too, and they're not wrong - I'm looking. If I leave, the department is going to crumble.

What should I do at this point.

    Leaving Accounting to Teach Math

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 05:02 AM PST

Okay, I've gotten on here and complained about my job in the past, but now I finally have a plan on how to make a change. After 8 years trying everything I know to try in accounting, public (nightmare), banking, industry, and now not-for-profit, I've given up. For a long time I just assumed everyone hated accounting as much as me and was as miserable but just faked it for a paycheck. At some point in the last year or so I had a revelation that some people do genuinely enjoy it. I don't understand this, but that's great for you who feel that way! Anyway, I've been talking with a school about getting my Masters of Arts in Teaching to teach 7-12th grade math. There is a big demand for math teachers in my state, and I've always thought I'd enjoy teaching. Is there anyone else on here who has ever made this change? Any tips or things I might not be considering?

I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but you will suck at your first accounting job, but you will get better.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2021 11:33 PM PST

Not to be an out of touch partner, but the reason your pay is low (in comparison to people that graduated with useful degrees) is because you will suck at your first job. Seniors and managers will probably be fixing your errors left and right. Occasionally, they'll get impatient too, but that's like the accounting rite of passage. But you will get better. I'm 6 months in my job and now I have a clue on what I'm doing. People in the industry know what they're getting when they hire you: inexperienced college grads that forgot everything they learned in undergrad.

TLDR: you'll be fine, just do your job.

What the fuck is the purpose of starting in big 4

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:39 PM PST

I legitimately cannot give myself any reason to continue working right now. I've worked 17.5 hour days as a SALT associate just hired out of college for the last 4 months.

The exit opportunities look like shit, to be honest those 17.5 hours are filled with absolute bitch work, and I hate every aspect of what I do.

I have coworkers being worked into the grave and there is no end in sight. This job is making me want to skydive off a bridge without a parachute.

More of rant re reading it now

My boss told me today that our department would be online permanently

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:32 PM PST

Started as a couple weeks at home, then a couple months with random days in office, now it's been almost a year since we've seen each other and I ask when the next in office day will be and she says "oh no we aren't going back into the office ever". Two of my team members have even moved out of state. Now what? What do people do that work from home all the time?

Am I crazy to purposely take a 100K paycut?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 03:20 PM PST

Currently work in a non-accounting role making approx. 150K total comp (w/ OT) in LCOL area. Am I batshit crazy for considering a career swap in my mid 20s and taking a 100K pay cut to have a different work life balance and career trajectory? People at work think I'm crazy...but they only care about $$$.

The inclination to pursue a career change is my desire for going from:

    1. Working 48-84 hrs/wk day/night -> Working 40-50 hours/wk days
    2. Being on-call to work 12 hour days 24/7 -> Only receiving calls for questions or minor work
    3. Having no flexibility (I cannot say no to request) -> Having some measure of flexibility (telework sometimes or ability to change schedule)

Kicker: Looking for 50-60K base with potential to earn 100-120K in 5-7 years with said working conditions. Plan on starting in PA (I know work conditions will not be good here) & dipping to industry after 2-4 years if I cannot find a firm that offers aforementioned desires.

    ------

I posted a variation of this a few months back, and didn't get much encouragement from the reddit Accounting world. Not looking for blind encouragement but would like to know if what I seek is something you guys consider reasonable or achievable in your experience and observations.

    ------

    Extra Note:

People always ask if I can just switch employers or move to a different title; that is not an option, as nearly all local employers are unable to work with what I require (24/7 operation)

Department feels like it’s going to shit

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 05:15 PM PST

Y'all ever have your accounting department go completely to shit? I was a staff accountant with a senior accountant, assistant director and director of accounting above me as the only people who do GL work. Department ran great and was super stable. The senior accountant quit. I was promoted. Assistant director quit and they were super competent. Director doesn't do that much as she has to keep an eye on budget and AP. Now I feel like the only person who knows anything in the department. It's partially good because I'm super valuable right now. But the weight of that stresses me the fuck out as I'm pretty early on in my career. Anyway just venting. Any words help

Any experience working for the DEA?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 10:03 PM PST

I'm interested in working overseas, but employed in the United States. I noticed the DEA appears to have numerous openings In positions pertaining to accounting. Can anyone share their experience?

I mainly just want to work overseas, I don't care who for (to an extent obviously), any recommendations? Thanks!

Public Accounting Alumns: Do you regret having worked in PA? If you could turn back time, would you have started in a different area of accounting?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2021 09:11 AM PST

Given that public accounting has a reputation for being incredibly taxing (no pun intended), do you regret having working in PA, especially at a B4 firm? Or do you value the experience that PA taught you?
