How to compete with conglomerates? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 11:24 PM PDT For small business owners, how do you guys compete with established businesses who have the money and resources to slash their prices? Feeling a bit defeated trying to reason with clients as to why our prices are the way they are. We source locally and we make sure all our workers are paid fairly, and I dont want to ever sacrifice what we pay our workers and our quality just to be able to match the prices of our competitors. So to be honest, I feel a bit stuck. [link] [comments] |

Small business in apartment: rent a second apartment? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 09:16 PM PDT So this is me thinking months down the line, I haven't officially started anything, but I want to weigh my options. So, I'm starting a small microgreens* business in my apartment and as much as I love having plants around, I will want to expand to more room than I have available in my current apartment. I don't need tons of space as it's a vertical farming operation and if I actually get big enough I'll rent (or maybe buy) actual warehouse space, but that's closer to years away rather than months. I If I want revenue more than 3.2k a month, I'll probably need to expand, but would it be worth it renting a second apartment? If it was say $600 a month, I could probably cover that rent just by selling 1 weeks worth of product. It wouldn't be a huge investment and I could even keep the operation going in my current apartment instead of moving everything over there. Has anyone ever done this? I would want to ramp up production slowly so I wouldn't need more than 1000 sqft of space (aiming for maybe 600sqft-800sqft, which is why I'm not looking for more commercial spaces. I haven't found any spaces that have what I need that aren't someone's dusty car garage or a storage locker of which I'm not sure I'm allowed to grow anything in. Just looking for some options if this isn't viable, or some experiences if someone else has tried it. *just in case it wasn't clear, I am NOT growing marijuana. Nothing against the stuff, I just want to make sure I don't get this post deleted for some reason. Weed is legal in some places, but I just want to cover my butt jic. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2021 02:13 AM PST I've got a very small creative agency/production company - basically just me and some contractors. I'm eager to use something to manage my schedule, track my time (but not every second of the day - just per day is fine), send invoices, forecast income etc. I use Xero for accounting stuff (and have to keep using it as it's what my accountant uses) and I'm eager to get something that integrates with that. I've previously tried Harvest and found that it was just quite heavily geared towards teams (whereas I'm just one person). I've also tried Cushion (cushionapp.com), which does seem great and do most of what I want, but doesn't integrate with Xero (thought it says it does - the integration doesn't work). Can anyone recommend anything? I've been through the Xero integrations on the Xero site, and they're really all aimed at big businesses from what I can tell. [link] [comments] |
How much should I charge for professional software development work? Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:44 AM PST I am not sure how much I should charge my client. Any advice is appreciated. My client is a big company in the US. I don't live in the US but they agree to pay me on par with US developers. The work is highly complex, a critical library that involves a lot of computation, with complex data structutures and other craps such as strict performance requirement, extendability, and complete tests. I read somewhere that US developer hourly pay is around 100$. Is this correct? [link] [comments] |
Alarm Clock app that gives Incentives If you wakes up on time. Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:58 AM PDT Can someone suggest any ideas on what Incentives would be great to reward users If they woke up on time without snoozing or ignoring the alarm Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Nov 2021 01:48 AM PDT Hi there, I have a question. I have a service to offer. Service.com is available. So all good there. Also, I am sitting in Europe and in the long run I would like to scale things up and offer the service in various European countries. I could translate my page to service.com/fr, service.com/de and so on. The question is: is it advisable to purchase the other European domain extensions as well? Like service.fr service.de and so on and redirect them to the main service.com page? I would be bummed if they were gone and I'd to buy myservice.fr or any other iteration of the name. Or maybe it is not necessary as I could offer the service globally and it wouldn't matter anyway. Clearly I can't purchase domain extensions for every country! Any advice? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Nov 2021 01:15 PM PDT TLDR: I'm depressed and have lost a passion to market or maintain my art business' social media. Additionally, I have no clue what I'm doing or why I'm doing art in the first place. I want to take a step back from marketing and just do commissions for friends until I'm ready to move forward. Overview I have a small art business and on my old account I used to love streaming to r/TheArtistStudio showing how I draw my art. Last year, I started my website, facebook page, etc for the art and sold it through both of those ways. I've always had a passion for my art, but I've also always gone through month long periods of time where I don't have any new art to show. I've developed two questions I don't have the answer for:
Sales The proven method that I've noticed is reaching out to friends who would like commissions done. They tend to always pay more or equal to than what I'm asking, plus I don't have to worry about making prints or shipping. So, my best bet seems to be commissions and very rarely my original art. Frankly, I don't even care about selling it either. I'm happy if I break even on supplies, which for me is easy since I've collected a lot of supplies over the years. Social Media I stopped maintaining my website earlier this year due to lack of traffic and honestly just a lack of passion for the business. I still own the domain. I'm considering doing an etsy, but I don't even know right now if I want to sell to people outside my friend group. This also applies to my instagram and facebook for my business. I feel like any time I post I try extremely hard to make it seem professional with captions and everything, but I think I'm also struggling with low esteem in that regard. I know my art is good and I enjoy doing it, but there's something that I'm trying to present to people that I'm simply not. Like I'm creating a face for the business that simply isn't me, it's dull and lifeless. For example, there's a local business that I follow on facebook, it's written in first person and even though there's walls of text, the way it's written you just want to keep reading more. Plus, the personality of the business owner comes through. That's what I'd like to have mine be like. Additionally, I'm finding it difficult to post more than once a month with a lack of content to post. I've tried giveaways, promotions, discounts, etc while I don't have any new art, and there's no bites. Sorry this was so long. My anxiety and focus is horrible right now so I felt like I needed to organize it. Hope it makes sense. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:25 AM PDT Hello, I don't have a business but have been looking to buy for a long time on those online broker sites. I found a motorcycle, bicycle, electric car, etc, rental place that seems interesting to me. My concern is liability for injury. How do I make sure I'm covered? What should you look for or ask for in the financials when buying a business? This business is located far from my current home. So I'm guessing I will have to make that switch too if I went for it. Market for Existing Process Models Posted: 06 Nov 2021 01:33 PM PDT Is anyone aware of a way to get their hands on existing business process models? To expand, if I wanted to purchase process models on the ins and outs of running a restaurant or a grocery store, is there a way to get my hands on them? Edit: Below I break down what a process model is at a very high level. You can also read up on them here. I'm interested in existing process models of businesses, because they can improve your probability of success by reducing surprises. [link] [comments] |

Inventory management system for a shop that makes custom products Posted: 06 Nov 2021 08:05 AM PDT Hello all, we need an inventory management system, as we currently keep track of everything by hand, and as we grow it's getting out of control. I need one which can:
These are the most important things I can think off the top of my head. Things over a few hundred $ per month could go over budget... any ideas? Thank you all very much for your help and knowledge!! [link] [comments] |
Business Bank Account Recommendation Posted: 06 Nov 2021 07:55 AM PDT So my husband owns his own LLC. He is a logger and heavy equipment operator. He is regularly sub contacted out by the same company and that company pays him weekly via paper check Our current bank sucks with their fund availability policy. He gets his check on fridays but can't get to the bank til the end of the day which is usually about 6pm. Our current banks deposit cut off time for It to be considered deposited that day Is 2pm So even though we deposit a check on Friday, they consider it deposited on the next business day, which is the following Monday. Then their policy is to make the funds available on the second business day after the day of deposit. So if we deposit a check on Friday evening, we don't get to use any of it til the following Wednesday. Which is just kinda ridiculous to us So anyone have any good bank recommendations?! Something with a same day fund availability policy? Or next day availability policy? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 06 Nov 2021 10:07 AM PDT In California, when filing for an LLC, you enter your company name in a textbox and pick the desired "LLC" spelling from a dropdown list (e.g. "LLC", "L.L.C", "Limited Liability Corporation", etc). My attorney friend said I should enter my company name as "My Company 123," (with a trailing comma) instead of "My Company 123". When I go through the filing steps on the ca.gov site, the final confirmation page says "Limited Liability Company Name: MY COMPANY 123 LLC" when I don't use the trailing comma, and "Limited Liability Company Name: MY COMPANY 123, LLC" when I do use the comma. I'd like to have my name as "MY COMPANY 123, LLC" as the official name, but I'm afraid having the trailing comma in the first textbox will mess other things up down the line. Is it common to form an LLC with a trailing comma in the web form as my lawyer friend suggested? [link] [comments] |
Employees caught spending hours each day on non work related websites. Best software to combat this? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 01:19 PM PDT I admittedly and purposely created a long leash on two of my employees. I wanted them to have a job that was independent with little oversight, because its simply not needed, for their job specifically. Whoops Ive had suspicions but the numbers were okay and the job was getting mostly done. This week they completed 25% of what they normally do. Clear as day on the reported completed work and visually you can tell things don't get moved. A few weeks ago I even added hours from a third employee to reduce the workload on these two. What a joke. I feel played. Their job however requires a lot of googling and general web research. This is quite easy to differentiate when the alternative browser history is filled with social media and a few non work key websites they visit. Honestly, the browser history is a fireable offense as it is, it's hours and hours of the day wasted from both of them plus the additional team member hours I have just added at their request. I feel betrayed to be honest. I placed a lot of trust in them. The software im looking for needs to block some web pages, but also downloaded software like discord. Potentially screen sharing I can monitor. Ive spent thousands of dollars apparently for some top tier reddit browsing. [link] [comments] |
Tool for calculating a target reduction in taxable income by way of retirement account contributions Posted: 06 Nov 2021 01:12 PM PDT Is there a calculator tool online that would allow a business owner to plug-in projected net income for the tax year and play with retirement account contributions to determine what amount of self-employment tax savings would result from various contribution amounts? Thoughts on selling things at events? Posted: 06 Nov 2021 11:44 AM PDT I've seen so many people make really good money from selling things at events. They buy/make whatever they're selling, pay rent, set up some things and make hundreds of dollars. It seems to me like it's more about what to do, where to do it, and what to sell then it is about attracting customers by people knowing who you are. [link] [comments] |
