Celebrating a mini win! Monthly minimum payment went down from $236 to $202. Posted: 19 Nov 2021 06:20 AM PST I'm somewhat active on here. Basically I thought I'd never get out of $25k debt (credit cards, auto, personal loans, ugh) but I managed to pay it alllll off. And then I started to tackle the $26k student loans. How was I 26 years old and in ~$50k of non-mortgage debt?!? I started this ~*~journey~*~ with $26,000 in student loans with NelNet (federal) and now I'm down to about $19,000. I was able to take advantage of the CARES Act $5,250 reimbursement through my employer which has accelerated my payoff. Anyway, my minimum used to be $236/month and now it's down to $202/month. At least, that's what NelNet estimates it'll be when payments resume in February. I expect to pay off another $2,000 between now and February so maybe it'll be more like $195/month. What's amazing about this, for me, is the feeling of freedom. I'm slowly climbing out from the debt. And never ever again will I go into this much debt. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 18 Nov 2021 08:54 PM PST https://studentloanhero.com/student-loan-debt-statistics/ Student loan debt as of 2020; about 1.71 trillion dollars! https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/cost-afghanistan-war-lives-dollars-78802965 Estimated amount of direct Afghanistan and Iraq war costs that the United States has debt-financed as of 2020: $2 trillion. Weird. Almost like an entire generation of kids was sold into debt for their educations in order to pay for an endless war. Huh. Wouldyalookatthat. [link] [comments] |
Are student loan advisors a thing? Posted: 18 Nov 2021 11:55 PM PST I'm new to the student loan world despite being 13 years removed from school. My partner worked In PSLF-eligible fields (local government) for 10 years, but has also been in default for some or all of that time. We have no clue how the recent changes to PSLF may intertwine with everything else, and our situation seems more complex than what's covered in FAQs and most online resources. We just don't know where to start, and given the horror stories of the ineptitude of loan servicers we are leery of calling them and just doing whatever they say. Is there such a thing as Student Loan advisors? or is this something a financial advisor could help with? It just seems like this whole system is big enough that have to be experts out there that knows all these different moving parts and would offer services to help people navigate the system. I'm not looking for someone who can "get us a better deal" or somehow get us out of paying what we owe (or qualifying for forgiveness) - but rather someone who knows the various options available and can help us find the right plan of attack. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
