Any experience/lessons from losing a big client?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 08:12 AM PST

We've had this big returning client for 10 years now. Due to a mistake on our part, they've decided to part ways. It's something we take full responsibility for and something we've learned from, but it still feels so heavy.

Do you guys have any experience/lessons on bouncing back from something like this?

Psychological boundary of $100 per hour for service

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 03:54 AM PST

I am struggling with push back on rate above $100/hour. It seems to be a psychological sticking issue for some people. For years we stuck at $98/hour, but cannot afford it anymore. We do specialized work, but it is construction related so we are sometimes viewed as laborers just like everyone else on the construction site. What makes it worse, we deal with all the electronics with the HVAC and lighting in a commercial building so when there is an issue with any of these systems, we are expected to step up and help fix it, but no one appreciates they wasted hours of our time for something like an exhaust fan being installed without the neutral wire. The money for these never ending issues has to be made up somewhere.

Our rates are actually lower than our competitors most of the time, but we are usually quoting plan and specification jobs to contractors, not hourly work so they don't care what we charge per hour until they screw something up and then need bailed out that costs me two days. I am then told in no uncertain terms that there is no way they should have to pay me more than they charge for their journeyman plumber. What they don't understand is that their journeyman plumber isn't going to be expected to show up (for free) and meet with the school board members who are throwing a fit about something they don't understand regarding their overly complicated HVAC system from the 1960s.

Does anyone have advice on getting customers comfortable with the idea that we are a specialized service and that comes with a higher rate? If it were as simple as ignoring the customers wanting a low ball price, that would be easy, but with so many projects going out to bid, we have to give our price out to everyone.

Using Amazon Pay on online store- they have asked for company registration proof that is no older than 90 days... but my company was registered 4 years ago. So how do I obtain what they need?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 04:48 AM PST

I use Shopify and I just realised tha Amazon Pay isnt working. I looked into it and they are asking for 'Company Registration proof e.g. registration extract of (business name)'

There are some criteria below including the issue date of the document not being older than 90 days. How do I get this document? I don't understand because the certificate I got when registering my business is 4 years old, the age of my business. Thanks very much

Does your document meet these conditions?

    1. Business name and business details on document should exactly match the name and business details you provided while registering.
    2. Issue date of the document should not be older than 90 days.
    3. Document uploaded should be easily readable, should be less than 10 MB and can only be in following formats: *.png, *.tiff, *.tif, *.jpg, *.jpeg , or *.pdf.
    4. Document uploaded should not be a screenshot.

What If I Became The Hottest Man In My City?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 09:09 AM PST

Yes you read that right I am on a mission, and that mission is to become the hottest man in my city. The story behind my journey is that one day I was thinking of new and interesting marketing strategies for my SEO business when it hit me "What if I became the hottest guy in (Insert Town Name)" that way when clients ask me for SEO results I can say "Well I am ranked as the hottest man in (Insert Town Name) here take a look". I've done some research and both the search volume and level of competition is almost non-existent in my area meaning it should be a pretty easy job to fulfill.

I know you guys are probably thinking that's ridiculous but hear me out I think it would get a much better reaction and be a solid ice breaker for new potential clients. Then after they are reeled in we can always work through my past client examples and show them the results I've created with actual service businesses. Thoughts?

How are you managing multiple email addresses as a Small Business or Lead Gen Agency?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 07:55 AM PST

Here is a problem that I have constantly experienced - We are a small company that doesn't have resources for a large team of SDR/BDRs. However, we rely heavily on outbound prospecting mainly through email. We found out we could use multiple emails and multiple domains but it has become a nightmare to keep track of all our responses and manage all the inboxes.

Want to help name my business?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 11:21 AM PST

Starting a separate ecom shop for pro wrestling exclusively. But stuck on names. Don't want anything too gimmicky but also want people to know what it is from the name.

Will be selling figures, photos, memorabilia, autographs, doing signings, etc.

Right now the best I have is Ring Relics, but feel like that makes everything sound old and not current.

Any help or inspiration is greatly appreciated.

tech support company, is it worth it?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 10:53 AM PST

I'm interested in starting a tech support to offer remote hardware and software support, data backup setup, website setup, network setup and cloud server migrating (maybe affiliate or referral for services im inexperienced with). Since its just me, im not aiminig to get large, 24/7 monitoring customers yet. I know its hard to get clients when your new, there is alot of competition, and most people go with large, known companies. Is it worth it and is it a good idea to offer limited free tech support along with weekly articles, news, reviews, etc to gain an audience and possible business customers?

[Canadian Businesses] Looking for small businesses to pilot an e-commerce app

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 10:16 AM PST

    Hi Everyone!

We are TagTeams, a new Social Commerce app looking to establish a foundation within the Canadian Small-Medium business environment. As part of our pilot and MVP, we are looking to establish a small testing group of users who would be interested in providing feedback, utilizing the app, and helping us grow from an idea to a polished project! This pilot is looking for people to help us answer some tough questions about what needs are to be met for business users, feedback on UX/UI, and what you would like to see in future iterations. Rather than asking a new question often, we would like to see if the Reddit Community would be interested in helping us pilot this and provide feedback over a short term period.

As part of this process, we would not require access to any of your APIs, financial details, cards, or personal information. We are only looking for business email, name, and some basic contact details (all of which will be kept private, undisclosed, and never shared/replicated), and your willingness to keep an open mind!

If you would be interested in finding out more, please get in touch with us through the Send Message function or chat and we will get back to you!

    Looking forward to getting started.

    growing a new business help

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 10:13 AM PST

I own a flooring company for the past two years. On paper anyway. I own the LLC, the email, the website, the bank account. we do 200k a year sales so far, and have a lot of room to grow. Like ALOT! our business management is not good. Our jobs are 100% word of mouth, hard to sell expensive product in an advertisement.

My common law husband lives it almost everyday all day. Doing the actual work, bidding the work, answering phone calls, picking up materials, hauling around equipment in the trailer.

What can I do to help the business? I have no college education, I have social anxiety so I cannot talk to customers. I help with the physical work occasionally. But being a petite woman, I don't add what men can do on the job site, I become more of a distraction. It's not my thing to move around buckets and heavy equipment.

My 'husband' wants me to do something, I basically stay at home all day, watch anime, cook, clean, take care of our son and animals, workout., and he doesn't even know what, he only has 2 decades of experience in the installation part, and doesn't have a clue about the office part, neither do I.

Do I need to take a community college course? What does it mean to run a business? I want to feel like it's really mine, and I make decisions and earn some money. I definitely lack in some social skills with adults. I do get treated and talked down to like I'm a teenager in high school.

I don't know how to earn respect as a young woman. How to live it. How to act it.

Is it possible to be woman owned construction business?

I have analyzed some of my husbands conversations with reps and clients, and I could not hold up the way he does, all that man talk that becomes incredibly technical, then floats to cars, then some inside jokes about women. I don't see how I could be taken seriously.

Beefed Up IRS Small Business Implications? What Will Happen or What Will Change?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 09:53 AM PST

I run a small online vintage buy/sell business, and do everything by the book. I'm curious what the real life implications will be on small businesses over the years, with this huge investment into the IRS happening. I'm not trying to have political arguments, but really want to better prepare my business so I can stay ahead of whatever might be coming. I'm sure there are many other business owners out there as well who are wondering the same thing. I am basically a one man show, and an audit would be a nightmare. It would cost money working with my accountant, it would eat lots of time (which is also money), which would end up costing more money because we all know it takes money to make money. Plus it would possibly beat down motivation/morale if I had mistakes I was unaware of, etc… I haven't had time to really read up and see what is happening to prepare. Should we all expect to get hit with random audits in the coming years? How do we prepare for that to keep the cost down? Will the IRS or State Revenue Depts be working hand in hand looking into all our bank accounts? What will the red flags will be to trigger audits? ….. It's besides the point, but my personal fear is that it's going a shakedown of small businesses and middle class Americans by throwing out a broad net. The ultra wealthy (who govt say needs to pay fair share), can afford to get hit with audits. Tell a multimillionaire to pay a few hundred thousand, then they can carry on. They are like this sucks, but whatever… cost a super small business $10k-$20k and you could cripple them.

Small business owners- How much do you budget for marketing and advertising your business? What do you find gives the best bang for the buck?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 08:33 AM PST

Are there local options for your advertising or are you relying on print and mail to hit the homes directly around your business?

Finding a reliable and affordable shipper

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 08:21 AM PST

Hi all, I work for a small clothing brand and unfortunately as a result of covid, we have to return 11 boxes of our clothing from Cyprus to the UK. But I am really struggling to find any providers that are reliable and arent crazy expensive. Can anyone recommend any companies?

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this, I'm just at my wits end with all of this.

Auto responding on Instagram comments - yes or no?

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 04:32 AM PST

Hey, I am responsible for the marketing side of our small business. The founder asked me to engage more with the comments on our channels, but our followers seem to always engage outside of working hours (6pm to midnight).

I don't necessarily want to spend my evenings replying to comments in a B2C interior design industry. I am salaried, and have a life too!

Most of the comments are quite shallow e.g. "that's gorgeous!" "Lovely" "@name check this out!" 99% of them are not complex responses or questions.

Should I consider setting up automatic responses, and if so, could you recommend a reasonably priced service that does this?

Does quick comment response even impact the IG algorithm? I'm afraid of the bot getting it wrong and damaging our PR to be honest.

Looking for a form solution to replace a PDF form for my clients to sign up with.

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 04:13 AM PST

    Hi All,

I hope you are having a great day. I am looking for a tool like "google forum" for clients to complete with their account details. Google Forum just doesn't look smart enough and doesn't provide all of the features that we need. We currently just get the clients to complete a PDF but I will digitise this. Any help or recommendations would be great.

Was thinking of possibly building it into our website, not sure if anyone else has tried to do this or if they have found a better way of doing it.

    Thanks in advance

Question regarding starting a web design agency

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 07:02 AM PST

I always wanted to start a web development agency and started learning skills for that and so far I learnt react and I am pretty good at it. My questions are

    1. I already know react, should I learn wordpress because wordpress is better for most of projects and does job quickly.

    2. I am alone planning to start a business, and no other employee or partner who can help with building website. So how do u guys who work alone handle lots of stuff? In past I have worked with a client in app development and that client made me want to quit freelancing. A lot of stuff I had to handle and he kept changing his requirements very frequently. Also back then I was bit inexperienced and it was partly my mistake to take on projects without setting up contract. But now I am more confident about it but only thing that keeps stopping me is how should I handle when I have overwhelming amount of work? Any tips would be appreciated

    Thanks for reading

Any general advice/suggestions for an entrepreneur

    Posted: 19 Nov 2021 12:21 AM PST

I have been going through posts here on regular basis and even if I may not be facing that particular issue now, it gives me insight on what may happen later. Awesome people with awesome posts and suggestions 😀

I started buisness just before covid hit and despite all the uncertainty thankfully have been able to grow. I have outgrown the space and need more people to join in. Planning few more steps on expansion, moving on in new bigger place and getting more products developed. Till now i have bootstraped quite well but this expansion phase will set me back with lot of money. At times I get very anxious of this leap and get sleepless nights but I think I will persevere and come out on other end of tunnel.

To help me get better at buisness, I have been going through lot of books and videos, podcasts, reddit posts 😅 etc to teach myself. Notable books i read recently is Micheal Gerber-Emyth revisited, the 10X rule, this is marketing by seth godin, FOMO, the lean start up, start with why by Simon Senek, Range, Grit by Angela Duckworth and many more to list here.

So my fellow buisness women and men any general advice, suggestions you can give me (39 F) entrepreneur in Mumbai, India is highly appreciated. I am not informing what my buisness is as I am looking for general advice and not industry wise advice. I am not yet in direct to consumer buisness but B2B buisness, so less hassles of smal small transactions, it is pretty straightforward. But the expansion is B2C products. And therein lies the unknown for me.
