Just out of curiosity! 1) How much do you make? 2) What is your role? 3) What area of the country are you in? 4)How many years of experience do you have? How old are you? 5) Are you in public or industry? 6) Do you work for a big firm? Regional? Boutique? Etc

    New job rant

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:45 AM PDT

Think I struck gold with my new company. So far I'm only doing like 2-3 assignments a day and they are letting me have the entire day to do it when in reality it should only take 1 or 2 hours to do it lmao.

Huge salary increase and benefit increase since switching. I pray that it stays this way. Finally!

Well, we got to order pizza for lunch then watched The Lion King 2 clips on YouTube.

    AND IT RULED.

I love pizza parties. I love being in government. That is all.

I am going to be an intern!

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:40 PM PDT

So I decided to go back to school in my 30s… I lost my job because of the pandemic, and wanting something more then what I was doing. I know some people and they put in a good word and now I have an internship. I just finished accounting 1. (i'm so green it's embarrassing) . So all I have is a Basic understanding of debits and credits.

I want to do well in this job. They will have me do minor stuff with auditing. As of right now that's all I know, I don't start for two more weeks.

Can someone give me a link to a video or some words to look up to help me get my foot in the door of understanding what I am about to walk into?

It’s been over a year since I have been working in audit at a big 4 firm.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:07 AM PDT

I just got promoted to staff 2. I feel like I haven't learnt anything even though I did work on complex sections. I think everyone simply (even seniors) just roll forward PY WP's and enter new numbers thats it. Roll forward the complex memos and that's it. Does everyone feel the same way? Should I look for another job in industry before the start of busy season?

Audit folks - how do you get over the fear of having those first meetings with a new client?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:31 PM PDT

Especially when they already sent your team rude mails...

I'm about to have one of my first tomorrow morning. If it's a nice client I don't care as much, but when it's a big one, they are mean, and I don't have my head around it yet as I'm new, I always get a lot of anxiety - as if they will interrogate me, not the other way around!

How do you do it? I read the agenda items again and again for a few days now...

I guess it's the same with presentations- how do you not panic during these and forget every piece of knowledge you have??

I've been doing this job for nearly 6 years now and it's still not getting much easier...

Am I overthinking this job opportunity?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:33 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I started as a first year tax associate in B4 back in January (11 months), and shortly after getting my CPA I decided that the world of PA just wasn't for me. The reason for this being mainly because I felt like I was being a mindless excel drone and not really learning much of anything. Plus the hours were brutal, with me working 80-90 hours during January-April, then doing it again from July-September. Anyway, I was applying to some jobs and got a job offer as a Tax Senior with a professional sports team, which sounds like an amazing opportunity and is something I've always wanted to get into. Now that I have the job offer though, I've been struck with anxiety and I just feel like I'm not ready for such a role, and maybe I'm quitting on PA too soon. Is there something behind these feelings, or is this a normal feeling when you are on the verge of taking the next step in your career?

How do I get started in accounting (former teacher)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:15 PM PDT

I'm finishing up student teaching and honestly I don't think this is is a viable career path. I'm still looking into other options too (coding, instruction design, etc) but nothing fits because I don't care enough. I kinda just wanna do some shit and go home. I'm also detail oriented and like focused tasks. I want decent pay and not dealing with annoying kids or a shit ton of planning.

Anyway my local community college has an associates in business with a focus in accounting. Would that help me? Or should I get another bachelors or maybe a masters for non accounting backgrounds? I'm also wondering if I can get experience in bookkeeping or something with no accounting experience?

    Thank you!

    Pwc Adjustments happening?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:41 AM PDT

Does anyone know if salary adjustments are really happening for specifically new staff at PwC. Starting winter/spring in a HCOL. I've been seeing salaries going up for audit and tax being dramatically increased at other firms. Thanks

NEED Advice needed regarding a move into international tax? (Sorry for the lengthy text!)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:20 PM PDT

Just some background, I graduated earlier this year and got a job at a large provincial firm that I started last week. So apparently they needed two technicians(one for normal taxes and one for international taxes) but only hired one due to a miscommunication.

Today I found out that HR and the tax partner told the manager of international tax to put me on his team even though that's not the position I signed up for. (I had signed up for normal tax)

The manager was super nice and said he wouldn't force me to do it, and that it is more challenging as it would require me to learn US taxes (I live in Canada). He essentially told me I would be helping with corporate and personal tax returns that involve companies/ppl that are on active on both sides of the border.

Now I need advice on whether I should accept this or not? The manager made it sound like I would become a rare commodity once I was fully trained up but I wanted to ask the ppl of reddit what type of jobs they think I will be able to get after this?

I don't want to stay in public accounting forever, I would like to switch to a government or industry job afterwards. If you have any further questions please ask and I will answer them in the comments!

I have an interview for Zillow for an accounting internship, I heard they are laying off 25% of their workforce. How big of a red flag is this?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:57 PM PDT

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but my thinking is that I'll be stretched super thin if I work there and that they won't be able to provide me with adequate training and that I won't even get the chance for a return offer. I already have other offers I like and I'm probably gonna message the recruiter and tell them I'm no longer interested. Bad idea?

    Less

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 08:59 PM PDT

Nothing grinds my gears more than reading a financial statement line item that say "Less: ($XXX)"

Stop saying less a negative number you are being redundant and logically incorrect.

    BIG 4 Salary Inquiry

How come incoming summer/fall associates are getting a higher base salary than that of incoming winter associates? Will winter associates eventually get a higher base salary than the summer/fall associates?

    Seeking advice on Forensic Accounting…

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:16 PM PDT

Lately I've been looking at other career options, I've been in healthcare for 5 years and looking to make a leap into another career. One that caught my attention is Forensic accounting it seems fun and challenging, but I can't seem to find anyone to chat with or to even discuss the details about what it's like to be one. If anyone has any advice or insight on what to do or where to go I'd appreciate it!

Is 10-11 months too short of a time before jumping to a different company?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:33 AM PDT

So I've been a staff accountant at a very large private company making around $55k(I know, PA pays a decent bit more but I haven't worked more than 45 hrs in a week since I started) in probably on the lower end of HCOL area since I graduated college so around 10-11 months experience here. As many of you know the job market has been pretty crazy and I've gotten a lot of messages on LinkedIn from recruiters and what not about opportunities. I know that these need to be taken with a grain of salt but if they are reaching out with other industry staff positions paying 65-70k is it worth it to pursue or would I kind of be looking like a job hopper by not staying at my current company for even a year?

Of course there are other things to consider but it's quite enticing seeing the potential to make that much more in a relatively short time.

    Thanks for any input.
