Why do people sell their successful business?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:01 AM PDT

-- EDIT: Massive thanks for the answers! You clarified my doubts and provided me with quite good insights!! --

Why do people sell successful business? I don't seem to understand why would you sell for a limited amount of money (even if its quite a lot) something that puts money into your pocket every month. Not to mention all the effort and hours you put into it.

It may sound a naive or stupid question but Im quite young, just starting to see the first positive results of my business after a lot of hard work and I cannot imagine selling it to someone else.

Building my first app - advice on pricing and usability needed (badly!).

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:19 AM PDT

    Hey, folks!

I'm building an AI brainstorming tool - CopyAim, and it has a lot of various social media writing features.

You provide your niche/product/service/description, and my tool will use GPT-3 to brainstorm some ads, posts, or ideas.

The app is totally free to use with free daily tokens (or you can subscribe to CopyAim+ for unlimited use)!

I would really love any suggestions or ideas on what else you would want to use in such a tool.

Additionally, I am looking for feedback in terms of what would this app need in order to help YOU become a subscriber. In other words - how is the pricing, what features do you like, or which ones are lacking?

Check out CopyAim or/and me any questions about it!

Do all these “AI page builders” actually use machine learning models? I can’t find if they do or just use AI as a buzzword.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:38 AM PDT

I just can't definitively find if wix adi and bookmarks aida and all the others are actually using machine learning. Thanks!

I found the Inner Strength to keep pursuing my Passion after I discovered the Dunning Kruger Effect

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:54 AM PDT

Psychological research has shown that people tend to overestimate their abilities at performing a task. In fact, when we start something new our confidence reaches a high. However, it then plummets to all time low when we keep at it. This is because we realize how bad we are at the skill and how much more we have to learn.

This is called the Dunning Kruger effect, which plots out our confidence against our actual expertise. This is extremely helpful to understand for anyone who is looking to become genuinely great at something. I dive into the details of the Dunning Kruger effect here if you'd like to check it out - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-kajMiu9DA

It is research like this that forms the basis for us never giving up on our passions and dreams, but it's extremely useful to know what you can expect and that's what this concept does extremely well.

What do i need to know and how to create a e-commerce website that intermediates the sales of other companies?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:50 PM PDT

I don't know if i can translate well what Im thinking or if there is a name to it (sorry for my English):

Let's say that i want to create a website that sells products of the company A, B and C. For every sale, i earn a % comission for every sale made. The upside for you to buy on my website is that the product will be on a huge % off for a LIMITED time instead of buying directly to the company.
Maybe call it a stock off kind of website or a tiny litlle showroomprive but for a niche product. Most of this companies dont have a great online presence so there's that big opportunity for them.

Thats the core idea. What are taking my sleep and hope for your help is:

    • Is it doable to do for someone that has no experience on coding/web, or do i really need to partner with or hire someone?

    • Where would you start?

    • What would you worry about the most if you would going to start this?

    • How to deal with laws and logístic knowing that you only sell the product and get the comission? ( For example: so Company A dont sell by its own with the discount to not pay me the comission OR dont suceed on the shopping time ).

Im so sorry if any of this is stupid, i recently bump into this sub and as im feeling overwhelmed i thought i would try my luck here.

Thank you so much in advance!

Edit:showroomprive is a way better example.

I am looking for some guidance please

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 09:51 AM PDT

*I apologise for the complete mess of a post this is. I originally started looking at my education but I realised I need guidance in other areas too. I recognise that asking for help is a form of journaling for myself and this can be just as helpful as the insights I get down in the comments. I will thank you in advance for reading and I hope you may respond. I hope you don't misuse the responsibility you have and tell me to do something stupid. I understand that upon seeing my age you may be jealous and wish you knew what I know now. I hope this doesn't cloud your judgement and we can all act to make the world a better place You may as well skip to the TLDR at the bottom if you wish*

I am 15 years and from Ireland. I am currently in what's known as Transition Year (More on this later). I know I want to be an entrepreneur. I also know the statement sounds stupid. I however know what I will do. I have a plan. It is very niche, and it won't make me a billionaire, but I hope I will get Financial Freedom, follow my passion and live a fulfilling lifestyle. I will have to pick my Leaving Certificate subjects in a few months. The Leaving Certificate is the equivalent of second level and it is designed to get you into college. I plan on doing college. College in Ireland is "Free". It is only 3k euros for the first four years and about 5-7k a year afterwards. Usually parents invest some money and they are able to pay for their childrens college. Doing college in my country doesn't put you in a huge amount of debt.

I am in Transition Year now and I have to pick my Leaving Certificate Subjects in February. Transition Year focuses on Personal Development. I am doing ICDL, Martial Arts, Volunteering, Guitar, some programming on freecodecamp.org, and I'm finishing the google digital marketing cert. In terms of entrepreneurship I am doing the School Yearbook, BT Young Scientist, PExpo and GAA Future Leaders. At the end of this year, I go into fifth year and then sixth year and do the Leaving Certificate at the end of Sixth Year. The subjects (you are taught 7 in school) I am thinking of doing are:

    Maths (mandatory)

    English(mandatory)

    Irish (mandatory)

French(recommended for college, you can't do a business degree without a language even if you did all three Business I know its stupid.)

Physics (I think its cool and a science is recommended for college, furthermore, I can do Applied Maths with only a bit of extra work)

History (I think its interesting and important, but there is no logical reason to do it.)

Design and Communication Graphics (Technical Drawing, good for product design and Architecture or Engineering, you also get to learn CAD as well which I think would be good to have as an Entrepreneur.)

You get points, and this allows you to get a college course along with subject choice. I will get very high points providing nothing goes wrong, and a Language and a Science allow you to do anything. I am thinking of something in the STEM (STEM seems to involve a lot of problem solving and Entrepreneurship is all about solving problems) area and then going on to do a 1 Year Entrepreneurship Degree at Trinity College Dublin https://www.tcd.ie/courses/postgraduate/az/course.php?id=DPTBU-ENTR-1F09.

I don't want to do a business degree as I have no interest in Business Management, Accountancy or Economics. However I do feel Business Accounting and Economics have something to offer me. I need to manage my accounts, manage staff and have an understanding of economics. This is where Leaving Certificate Business, Accounting and Economics (I'm gonna abbreviate them as BEA) come in. I am going to learn a lot of the stuff and see about doing the exams. I do the Leaving Certificate in 2024, and that would be for points. I could also sit the exams whatever year for BEA as I wish. There is no need other than to prove to myself I know the information. I don't need to prove anything to anyone.

My backup plan is to work in the computer programming field. I am hoping even with the freecodecamp.org certifications I could a part time job in college, which would hopefully pay better than something like working in a shop as a cashier. The experience and a STEM degree should enable to get a half decent job should my business fail.

I have a service based business at the moment. I have a few clients and I am working on my website in particular to get more customers.

My plan for the future is to build cars in my grandparents garage. I already know what donor car and engine I am going to use, and the plan is to build FIA homologated vehicles for amateur track and rally use. The with the profits and maybe even investment I am going to build a restomod of the same car and sell that with the help of win on Sunday, sell on Monday. It sounds very teenage boy, but with degree in Engineering and some time, I think it could work. Some great things have come out of sheds in the UK, such as the Noble M600 or Ariel Atom, the former of which has a twin turbo Volvo V8 and the latter is some scaffolding with a motorbike engine.

I have started a car blog. This puts my passion for cars to work in making me learn new things and create a name for myself. I am also running social media channels.

Thanks for reading and please tell if I am doing anything wrong or stupid. I am looking for books and things to read to get information from too. Also please suggest anything you recommend I do as well.

tldr: my plan is to build cars out of a shed in rural Ireland. I also want to be able to work in the programming field as a backup plan and the skills are valuable. I want to do Maths, English Irish, History, French, Physics and Design and Commmunication Graphics for my Leaving Certificate, and maybe Applied Maths as an extra. I sit these exams in 2024. I have a year of personal development (before 2 years of study), in which I am getting my hands dirty in school projects as well learning new skills. I am thinking of doing a STEM degree, and then a 1 year Entrepreneurship course, rather than a Business Degree. I am also looking at Learning as much as I can from Leaving Certificate Business, Economics and Accounting. I may not do the exams as they are not needed for college courses or jobs. I am considering doing Leaving Certificate Computer Science in 2025, for qualifications into a job, and these combined with ICDL, freecodecamp.org certifications and a STEM degree, could land me a job in that field as well as skills for business. I would like some help as to what to do. This is just a plan of what I am thinking about.

    Tips for car rental business?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:09 AM PDT

I'm currently trying to get informations about starting a car rental business. I will try to cater to two different kinds of customers that need the same kind of car. It's hard to get first hand informations, because all the rental services in my area (central Europe, Austria) are big franchise companies and the employees i talked to have no real insight, the mainly only check the reservations and try to sell insurances.

Rental services in my area are mainly owned by big car companies or dealerships, theres no family-owned company i could us as an example.

I'm looking for some insight regarding the following themes:

    Buy vs. lease

Used (one year old) or new cars

How long to use a vehicle before selling it

How to calculate prices (that's a really abstract part for me)

Is it already the right time for Electric Cars?

General thoughts and tips regarding car rental.

Could someone point me to other resources?

What Can I Do With This Unsatisfied Customer?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:03 PM PDT

Some background to get started is that I work in the SEO industry helping businesses grow their online presences in order to generate leads. One of my clients is a roofer in the Colorado area and he's been doing well and even ranking number on the first page in a few different counties; however, where the problem comes in is that this roofer referred another business to me. Now that sounds great and all as I'm always looking for more work but this business owner has been a little difficult. After two months of SEO work he has already threatened to pull his business as he has not begun to see results.

I tried to explain to him that SEO isn't an overnight service and how it could take 6 months up to even a year or more from some sights to see traction as it really depends on the industry. He then exclaimed how he was offered the same service for a quarter of the price from an overseas agency and that he might have to discuss with them about moving forward. Is there anything I can do here? I don't want to come off as aggressive, but at the same time I do warn all of my clients prior to signing that SEO is a long game with great results if you have the time and patience to stick through it. I mean even the guy who referred him took well over 6 months to get the results he seeing now but it brings him over 10 new jobs a month now all because he waited through it despite those same doubts.

LLC structure for one foreigner and one resident?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:31 AM PDT

I am a bit confused on how to structure an LLC in U.S.A that involves an international owner and me (resident). I want to open this LLC as a subsidiary with the international owner as 100% owner and me as a corporate officer of some sort. However, here are a few questions that I have:

    1. It seems that I cannot open this as an S corp. Should I opening it as a SM LLC? Can a foreigner be the only member of a U.S Entity? I don't mind being a partial owner (10% or less) if need be.
    2. The services provided will be completed out of country, so the revenue made from US based clients will have to pass through to the parent company abroad. How do I avoid being double taxed? We would leave an X amount remaining in the US bank to take care of fees and such (plus to pay myself).
    3. How do I "connect" the parent and subsidiary company together?

    edited for grammar

Help replying to cold emails received with my own cold email to catch new client LOL

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:31 AM PDT

I have been a software engineer for 20+ years. So … I get 5-10 emails daily from recruiters looking for contract software engineers like me, but I decided to start my own agency instead that can offer a "team" of engineers at an hourly rate (or subscription).

    Example cold emails received:

    Hello <my name>

My name is John Doe and I am an IT recruiter at Some Company. I have a role that would be a great match for you. Please read the job description attached and let me know if you are interested? If so, please send me your resume and let me know of a good time to call.

    Thanks, <his name>.

Example of my replies redirecting to my new business:

    Hi <his name>,

Thanks for reaching out to me. I am currently working at New Company and we have recruited a team of very talented software engineers ready to work on their next assignment. Due to a shortage of engineers recently, our engineers are working on a project or problems basis for clients … instead of permanent placement. Our recent clients have been very happy with this new approach and the benefits it brings (e.g., more talent for the same headcount cost).

You can also visit our website <url> to learn more about how we are doing things differently. We also offer a 15% referral fee for recruiters <referral url>. If this is something you or your client is open to trying, I am happy to talk more about it.

    Thanks, <my name>

Any tips on messaging or a different approach that might convert better?

How much market research is necessary?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:42 AM PDT

I'm building a lead generation business that provides homeseller leads for independent estate agents.

The homeseller side is ready. I'm now working on how I can pitch this to estate agents. I've been interviewing a few estate agents to get an idea of what they'd look like in a solution like this. I've probably talked to a handful so far, and I've got some really insightful answers. I'm starting to see a few common pain points and needs.

But I know I need to to talk to more than a dozen people before I get a really good, well rounded insight. At the same time, I don't want to procrastinate on actually building when I actually have everything I need.

So my question is, when's a good point to say "Alright, I have all the info I need. Let's get to work"?

    How to promote a product

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:19 AM PDT

Looking for help. I've searched online and they all say the same thing. I have a new product but I don't have FB, Instagram, Tweeter or any of the other social things on there. Every website tells me to join them and then find followers. Why do people follow people on these apps. Honestly I don't need to know what people are having lunch, what they are wearing or they are at the bathroom. Surely there must be other ways to promote products. Thank you for your help.

Why you should do sales forecasting

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:26 AM PDT

After a busy day checking emails, making phone calls, and researching new leads, a salesperson may have to attend internal meetings before completing the workday. One of the tasks here is internal reporting and forecasting. This is where the sales manager weighs in all the factors, listens to fellow salespeople's opinions, and makes forecasts on the demand for products and services. Traditionally, they rely heavily on spreadsheets with disconnected data, where the process is highly inaccurate and manual. With the introduction of customer relationship management (CRM) technology, a centralized repository is provided that can be utilized for machine learning.

Demand forecasting is one of the major objectives for a CRM. If integrated into a CRM with updated and automated pipelines, sales forecasts can be automated and optimized for salespeople without much effort. The data-driven forecast can be used as a benchmark, as the usual level of business, and help with setting short-term goals. It can also be used for planning budgets and strategies. With a more accurate forecast, the sales team could increase its profit and strike the balance between demand and supply.

Churn and customer lifetime value analysis are also available through the use of machine learning with sales activity data and sales engagement data. This allows companies to know how much revenue they can expect from a customer throughout the business relationship. When using supervised machine learning models with labeled historical datasets on customer churn, the sales team can focus more on customer satisfaction and customer retention. Customer satisfaction is now the primary measure of sales success, followed by team and individual quotas. Using advanced forecasting models, sales teams can aim for higher customer satisfaction and an overall increase in sales performance.

I have an idea and I don’t know how to execute it

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 01:12 AM PDT

Sorry if this isn't written well, I tried my best.

So I have a big money making idea. It has to do with my industry- and if there's anything I know, its my industry. I've been doing it since 2009 and this particular niche just started becoming hot in 2017/18.

I'm the number one yelp rated professional in this industry in some of the most competitive markets in California- Malibu, Sausalito, and was number two of all of San Francisco when I lived there. I serve the most wealthy, famous, picky individuals who could see literally anybody they could ever want to but choose to come to me.

I've achieved this with no marketing or start up capital. Just Yelp and word-of-mouth. I've never been great with the more biz end/marketing and just love my craft.

Nowadays, I mostly consult for new businesses in this same industry. Most of them are absolutely awful and have no idea what they are doing.

Still, these businesses have the financial backing to open up shop in the right areas (where rent is literally $10k-15k a month), on the right streets, to purchase services from the right marketing companies, the right designers, the right Instagram influencers, and thus easily gain exposure and become successful.

    Even though they literally suck.

They get away with it because they provide a five star "vibe" in an industry where most professionals don't really know what they're doing and most customers aren't yet fully savvy to quality results.

At the same time, I have no chance up against one of these big businesses because I am a one woman show and I never expanded my skills to the more business/marketing end of things.

But to be fair to myself, that's a lot easier to do when you start off with a pile of money to throw at marketing agencies, real estate agents, and PR people.

Basically I have a product idea that people will buy an absolute droves. It solves multiple problems customers face + fills a GIGANITC need. I'm telling you I know what I doing and this product will sell.

Customers are spending huge amounts of money on products that try and achieve the same affect, but these products are messy, costly, and difficult to use. My idea 100% solves all of these issues. The moment a product like this is released in the US, there will be 50+ companies in China replicating it and pumping it out cheaply. If I were able to present it first, and on the right scale, it's a multi million dollar idea with unlimited potential in a billion dollar industry.

Problem is, while it doesn't exist yet, I'm not sure I can patent it because it's a combination/tweaking of things that are already on the market.

I think it's a matter of doing it first.

How does, or can one, go about finding a financial backer for a product that perhaps can't be patented, but really just needs to be first? Gah! Intellectual property. Thanks in advance for the tips.

How to build your very own product (not simply customize one)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 08:29 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

Might seem like a broad question but I wonder how to build my own product. I have an idea about a clock but a very specific one that needs to be built around a specific need.

I've read books talking about contract manufacturers, wholesalers, Alibaba, getting samples. But all I can find are existing clocks/products that I could somehow tweak or customize with a logo but it is not enough.

I'd like to pay someone to build a real new clock around my needs and not simply change an existing one.

What would be the best service for it?

    Thank you for your time

Hesitant of responsibility of owning a business

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:40 PM PDT

I was wondering if people could chime in on this. I'm in my mid 30s and sort of reconsidering all my life goals. One big goal of mine was to own a business. But I was recently on a date and the woman said she wouldn't want to own a business because she didn't want to be responsible for the livelihood of another person. What do you have to say to that?

A business is usually a lot of headaches. Why bother?

I think I still want a business but I just some convincing. Thanks.

I feel like I can't succeed without proper experience, stability, and capital, so I'm taking an 8-5 job. Any advice?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:36 PM PDT

I come from a rough background but I've done well with the cards I was dealt. It took me 7 years to graduate with a bachelor's degree, and I only have a few years of experience as a copywriter in a marketing team for a local franchise. I'm fascinated with business, tech, but especially UE and marketing campaigns. The research, psychology, and impact of those three are my passions. I lost that job due to Covid.

I'm 33 and now live paycheck to paycheck on unemployment. I've tried to start little projects here and there, but with zero money to invest, I can never seem to see any progress.

I've been approached by another (much larger and international) franchise to work in their digital marketing division. Not as a copywriter, but a digital marketer. I feel like this would get my foot through the door, give me plenty of money to invest in other things (and enjoy a real life without financial strain), and gain actual experience.

My dream is to own my own business― micro saas, online store, or a marketing agency are all appealing to me. Working 8 - 5 for someone else and not seeing my loved ones much anymore is not.

Has anyone taken a job just for the experience and moved on? How long did you stay? How can I make the most out of this job? How do I avoid burnout because of the long hours and lack of social life? What should I focus on?

Any advice or encouragement would be very appreciated :)
