Is it okay to test a competitors service?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 05:56 PM PDT

Should you avoid helping your competitors by using their service to test what they're doing right and wrong? I'd like to see what my competitors are doing better than me, and what we're doing better than them, but I'm not sure if this is ethical and/or legal.

VCs ghosting after booking a time for a meeting

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 06:48 AM PDT

I've had 3 VCs in the last 2 months reach out cold for a meeting, set the time, and then completely ghost, not responding to my email inquiring about their whereabouts. Most recently, a VERY prominent VC firm told me that they were flying down spur of the moment to see me and wanted to get lunch. I put aside an afternoon impromptu. The next day they ghosted. What the heck is up with these VCs? At the very least, don't they care about their reputation?

Can I as a founder participate in a Seed round?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:59 PM PDT

I've been bootstrapping my startup, built and launched the MVP already. It's a fintech so I have a minimum-net-worth requirement ($100K) in order to get an appropriate license.

Trying to get some longer-term evidence of traction and growth before going and asking for Seed funding. I've just been depositing personal funds into the business bank account. And I'm wondering - once we raise should I be repaying myself (as if it's debt) or can I consider my deposits to be contributions to the seed round?

I'd actually prefer to be in the round and get some of those sweet preferred shares if it's acceptable to do as the founder.

How are ISOs "valued" in a compensation package?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 01:24 PM PDT

This falls firmly under "I've waited so long that now it's embarrassing to ask." I've never worked at a public company, so I've always just been told the number of options in my comp package (sometimes not even knowing the stike price before signing). However, I often see people attach a value to ISOs (like, 200k base + 150k ISOs) when discussing offers. Aren't ISOs issued at FMV? Aren't they worthless by definition at the time of grant? I've never been able to find an explanation of this online, and feel like I'm missing something fundamental. Much appreciated!

In app advertising as core monetisation strategy?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:49 PM PDT

    Hey,

I am building a web app and have a fairly engaged but small userbase. My priority is on really finding market fit and creating a high quality and reliable product. I can't figure out a monetisation method at this early stage outside of putting some ads on the app. I guess I'm interested in whether this is a viable monetisation strategy in 2021 or is it passé?

    Thanks for any advice

    Hardware Certification

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:37 AM PDT

    Wearable device. Electronics. Not medical.

Finalizing pcb design. Want to do certification while still working with ee.

At what stage did you do certification? What certifications are the most necessary? (USA, California) not planning on selling in Canada, Europe, Asia in the first launch but obviously open to world sales later

Got a quote for $15-20k from a company. Is this in the ballpark?

We would be fine going through the certification process ourselves instead of through a company. Has anyone done this?

Reaching out to people on LinkedIn without exposing your identity to your current employer

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 02:11 PM PDT

I am curious to know how other founders are dealing with connecting to prospects/advisors on LinkedIn without exposing your identity to your current employer. I find it especially difficult on Linkedin because what makes LinkedIn outreach work better is the fact that you have an actual profile there and have a history of your work and interests. So creating fake profiles won't work according to me.

My startup is in the validation phase currently and we need to reach out to people in and out of our network.

    Customer development interview requests

Pure outbound motion: LinkedIn group cold interview requests

Hey guys, I'm trying to get target market segmented customers from LinkedIn groups to sit down for 30 minutes for customer interviews on primary market research for feedback. What is the best way to get people to accept a meeting? How do you get past this pure outbound motion where people already have that preconceive notion that you're trying to sell them something, no free lunch, no free ride sort of attitude?

The talk track that I currently have is:

    "Hello distinguished x industry leaders:

--Rapport building statement, or fun fact--

Would love it if I could do a quick 30 minute interview with x industry managers or directors and above, that have the authority to oversee x function, and is actually responsible for x type of employees that performs x tasks, in order to conduct some primary market research to potentially benefit the industry. Thanks in advance."

How can you get users when you're app is in development?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:26 PM PDT

My company's on-demand app is being developed right now, and I'm struggling to think of the best ways to acquire users. My fear is that we don't have a clear-cut date on when we'll launch, so if I post online to get people to sign up, by the time we do launch they may have forgotten about it entirely. Also, how do I entice people to be on the waitlist without a product to show why yet?

    Startup marketing

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 10:12 AM PDT

How would YOU start marketing/advertising your startup business?

Our startup is close to launching, a delivery service. So far we've got FB, IG, Google Business, Website, LinkedIn, Yelp, Foursquare, D&B, Yellow Pages, Twitter, Pinterest all setup with our link. I know we'll have to pay for ads on Fb, IG, and Google Ads, but are there any alternatives I haven't thought about?

How should I have handled this? Met with a VC-backed company today, asked what a partnership might look like—they deferred to me.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I launched a startup a couple of months ago and am seeing some success. I met with a potential partner today to discuss redeploying my technology on their white-label solution and exploring what a partnership might look like. This would save me money because I no longer have to be responsible for bugs and recreating the wheel. They would greatly benefit from joining me in being the first to market and being able to market our joint success.

    As a company, here's what I need:

    • to be able to focus on this full time
    • to get to market more quickly (technically, though my customers are taking the product to production, all of my accounts are still in a status of Early Access)

Meeting with the CEO of my potential partner, instead of telling him what I need—I asked him how he sees a partnership working moving forward. He turned the question around to me and asked if we were VC-backed, to which I responded with a "No, we're not VC-backed, but we've got momentum and have a close working relationship with others that will help us see significant success when we flip the public on-switch from our early access state ." I didn't really answer his question on what a partnership would look like, I just sold on the momentum of my company.

We ended the meeting with the CEO stating we should start with rebuilding on his white-label solution and they'll offer support as needed. This would be a months-long process and strictly after-hours for me as I continue my employment elsewhere.

    So,

    1. Should I have been more clear about what my company needs (probably duh", right?)
    2. The meeting was with both the Chief Business Officer and the CEO—if I follow up with a proposal to get financial backing from them (perhaps for a stake in my company) am I more likely to have an in with the CBO?

Best software for managing an agile software that also has roadmapping capabilities?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2021 04:43 AM PDT

I've just started out running product for a startup and we're building out our MVP before pitching for investment. In my day-job I use separate tools for backlog managment/sprint planning etc vs drawing up roadmaps (Jira for the former, Roadmunk the latter).

Looking for a piece of software that does a good job of both for a small team with a very simple project - we're 2 engineers, a PM and a designer. Monday.com looks like it does what I need but are there any others out there that I should be considering?
