Posted: 30 Sep 2021 10:14 PM PDT I was hit in a T-bone collision today by a driver running a red light (it plowed through another car and then hit me at a relatively low speed, probably under 20 mph), and was fortunate to be uninjured. However, the same can't be said for my 2011 Corolla. The good news is that there seems to be no engine damage whatsoever, the airbags did not deploy, and to my untrained eye none of the structural members of the car are bent, except maybe the bottom part of the A pillar. The car was also able to start and move under its own power out of the intersection when the police asked me to do so. However, when moving out of the intersection we realized that the front wheels are significantly out of parallel, and given that the driver's side door is completely wrecked, as well as damage to the front left panel and the hood...I fear the writing's on the wall and this car will be totaled. I have not yet been formally absolved of fault but there were two witnesses who said they would gladly testify that I was 100% not at fault, both of whom the police are talking to, so I assume I will be found not-at-fault. Of note, I'm currently on a rotation in my graduate program that mandates my attendance 6 days a week for roughly 10 hours a day which leaves me almost no free time to go car-shopping, which is the main reason I'm hoping the car will not be totaled. I'm also in student loan debt due to tuition so I'm trying to minimize out-of-pocket CoL things like this. 1) Is my suspicion correct? Like I said, I'm REALLY hoping this can be taken to a body shop and fixed for under the value of the car, paid for by the at fault party's insurance company, and dealt with in a reasonable timeframe. I realize people in this subreddit might not know but if anyone does have any idea of how likely this vehicle is to be totaled I'd appreciate your wisdom. 2) If the car is deemed to be totaled, it sounds like I will be given a check equivalent to the current value of the car. KBB estimates 5-6k trade-in (is this the correct number to use?), which is nowhere near enough to buy another used car of similar quality, especially when considering that I'd have to pay vehicle tax and a new registration fee on top of that. If you are a victim of a not-at-fault total loss, is the expectation that you end up a few thousand dollars in the hole if you want a similar quality car, or you just get a worse car as a replacement? I hope I'm missing something here. 3) Buying this car was one of the biggest hassles of my life. I must have looked at 30 different cars all of which ended up having some terrible flaw before I finally found this diamond in the rough. I don't want to play into this stereotype of "dumb millennials who need their hand held for everything," but would either my insurance company or the other party's insurance company have resources to simplify the process of obtaining another vehicle similar to this one? If I'm honest, I kind of just would want another cheap Corolla due to the reliability and simplicity. Thank you for any help you can offer! edit: NY [link] [comments] |

Car backed into my kid's stationary car, insurance puts 20% blame on us Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:43 PM PDT 30 mph residential city street. Yellow dashed center line down middle of street. My kid had just backed out of driveway on south side of street, was now facing straight East, in drive but not yet moving, preparing to head East. Other car backed out of a north side driveway, also backing so that she could had east, crossing the yellow line into my kid, damaging her rear door and quarter panel. American Family claims my kid should have taken evasive action since she was in drive and seen the backing car, that hit her, while she was not moving. 20% my kids fault they claim. Any solid arguments I can make? Already pointed out any car entering roadway from private property must yield to all traffic and the obvious part where other driver was obviously not looking behind her while moving. Posted: 01 Oct 2021 12:21 AM PDT Okay so back in May I moved states and the moving company I used destroyed alot of my stuff and gave me 60cents per pound per item totaling to 186$ for what I totaled around 6k worth of stuff. I claimed with geico and at first they told me they can't pay anything that the movers insurance company paid. But this morning morning to my delight I woke up to an email from them saying "the following payment has been issued to you" which totaled to 6055$ after some deductions including depreciation. I had a few questions about what one of the documents said about the depreciation thing. It said something about I can recover the depreciated value which I don't want to do as I am more than happy with my payment and want this to all be over. They replied with "when you replace everything and provide the recipts to me you will be paid the depreciation value at that time". So my main question is: when I receive the check in the mail am I able to do what I want with the money or am I required to rebuy all the items I listed? I hope my question makes sense and thank you for any advice [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 11:16 PM PDT Baby was held over an additional day in the hospital due to jaundice. I am now getting a bill with a $500 penalty fee for not obtaining a precert for her one day stay in the transitional nursery (I believe it is being billed as a NICU stay). Insurance has been no help as people I have spoke with have given me different answers as to how they came up with my penalty number. Am I stuck with this now? Should the hospital have notified the insurance on my baby's behalf as they were the ones that would not discharge her? Edit: Baby was in a regular nursery for her 48hr stay and then was held over in a NICU type nursery for the third day. This is for New York and insurance is Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield. Umbrella policy and pre-existing conditions Posted: 30 Sep 2021 10:47 PM PDT If you have had an umbrella policy for the past year, and someone today sues you for a fender bender that occurred 3 years ago, does your umbrella policy apply? Or no since the original incident was before you had umbrella coverages? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:14 PM PDT Why is it that the policies that earn the least amount of money take the most man hrs? Like seriously, if a customer has either cancelled for non-pay OR (my favorite)—cancelled their policy because the car is going into the shop 5 times since early 2020– why should I waste any more time on them? Why would I want to process a cancelation and then turn around the next week and rewrite the policy because they got their car fixed? I have other customers who pay and who have nicer things I can insure for more money. And these types of customers can't call and leave a message and wait for me to call back. Oh no! They are incessant. I think I need a vacation. What does your agency do about customers like this? Do you rewrite them forever? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Doctors bill not getting through to my health Insurance, BCBS. What can I do? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:35 AM PDT I have 2 separate bills, with zero adjustments, payments, etc by my health Insurance. I've called Blue cross blue shield 5 TIMES and still nothing has went through, even though they have contacted the doctors office to make sure all info is correct and that they were submitting it correctly. Each time I call I ask about the exact statements, and they say they haven't received it. I call the doctors office and they say they have sent it out to them. It's been a year, I'm FURIOUS that I have to spend this much time/effort to properly use a service that I pay out the ass for. What can I do? All other bills/statements have had adjustments etc on them. I don't wanna spend 800+ out of pocket when insurance should be able to at least half that if not more. Edit: located in Michigan, USA. Insurance is through work, it's Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. Edit 2: our family doctor is an in network doctor [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:45 PM PDT Hey folks - My fiance got into a pretty weird situation and I was just coming here to look for some advice I currently live in a state in the Midwest and she lives in a small South Central town. She is about to move up to my apartment in about 10 days. Last week, she was involved in a car accident that was entirely not her fault. Her front bumper, passenger side light, and front side molding are wrecked, no damage under the hood to my understanding, so the car is still functional. Her car got taken to a body shop where it was deemed "totaled" (which is apparently defined as cost of damage >50% estimated value of the vehicle) and they are recommending we just accept a lump sum and use that to purchase a new vehicle. This will all be further negotiated with third party insurance. Here is the predicament - Cars are super expensive right now and we the amount of money we would receive would not be enough to buy a halfway decent car (autobody shop estimated car @ $11K). Repairing the vehicle in my fiance's hometown would extend past the date she was supposed to move. So I am not sure what to do, and how to bargain with third party insurance. Can they pay for the new moving costs associated with the accident (ie if she can't move when she was planning to because of this, and I had a flight booked to come down and help, will insurance cover that cost?) Furthermore - If an autobody shop in my fiance's town deemed her car drivable, and we drove it to where I currently live, would her insurance still pay for repairs out of state? If we wait to get a new car until she moves here, would they pay for the cost of the rental car to get her from her town to my town? If y'all were in this situation, what would y'all do? Her car is supposedly worth about $11K and has $6.5K in damages. It's a 2012 Lexus 350Rx. A very nice car her father was gracious enough to gift to her. It has about 140K miles, however those things last a long time, she takes good care of it and hasn't had any problems previously. With how expensive cars are today I'm not sure if it's worth buying an overpriced used car and having to pay monthly for it. Thanks in advance and please let me know if y'all have questions [link] [comments] |
Need help deciding between Aetna DMO or PPO? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:07 PM PDT Hi, I am a recent graduate who started his first-entry level job around 6 months ago. At first, I denied my employer medical benefits because I am under my parent's insurance. I am looking to select only Dental & Vison for now. I live in Queens, NYC, and have found plenty of dentists around the area. I don't really need major teeth work, just regular cleanings and probably a couple of fillings. Aetna PPO is around $10.26 a month deducted from my paycheck and Aetna DMO is around $3.20 a month. I've only found six providers around my location covered within the network. I am trying to figure out which one will have the lowest co-pay. Do you think it's better to go with PPO? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:36 PM PDT I just heard of an insurance time lapse or laspe and apparently in nys if you dont have insurance for a certain time period if you get insurance again then you likely pay extra until you prove yourself again? Is thus true? Iv been thinking of selling my car, canceling my insurance, and getting an electric bike. But let's say in 5 years I get a much better job opportunity but oys farther so I'll need a car again. Would my insurance be higher for the same coverage? I live in nys. [link] [comments] |

Got sent to collections during training Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:21 PM PDT I had progressive and canceled it the day I left before basic training. (Ontario) Auto insurance commercial or personal Posted: 30 Sep 2021 05:20 PM PDT Long story short. Im a high risk driver and only 4 companies will insure me. I got a quote and about to finalize then was asked for a work phone number and address. I guess to confirm the daily commute. I work as an hvac commercial installer. I told him that i drive to the site which depends from 10km-30km and im there for months. He then proceed to ask if i have tools or materials inside. Ofcourse i do… i got hand tools and an impact drill basic stuff. He then told me that he would have to talk to the company if that will be an issue. Ofcourse it is… called me back today saying he talked to 3 different agents and they said it's commercial. Dafuq? My car is a small sedan, its got no logo or anything on it. Not modify. Simply from point A-B for work during the week and leisure. Now my question is how this considered a commercial use when i dont go around doing service calls around the city… its the same thing as if i was to go to an office and go back home. What are my options? I will speak to the commercial broker tomorrow and explain it to them so maybe i can have personal insurance. Another option for me is to claim that im not carrying tools but if i get into an accident they may deny. Need some insight. Please and thank you! [link] [comments] |
Got married recently. Was driving wife's car and got some damage. Not officially on her insurance. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 05:11 PM PDT We both have our own cars and have our own insurances. Got into an incident in our parking garage, while I was using her car for an errand. No one else was involved, just scraped the pillar. Unfortunately the repair estimate is quite a lot. I am not officially on her insurance yet. We were about to finalize on either hers or my insurance as our combined insurance. Unfortunately, the damage happened before we could do that. Do I have any recourse if I wanted to use insurance ? [link] [comments] |
Incorrectly Coded Preventative Care Lab-Work Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:56 PM PDT I've got a bit of a health insurance SNAFU and I'm wondering if anyone has experienced something similar or can provide any advice on next steps. For reference, I'm based in the United States in California. A couple months ago, I attempted to make an appointment for my annual check-up with my normal primary care doctor. He was retiring, so they instead suggested I see a new nurse practitioner who was starting at the same clinic. I did an initial appointment with her to establish me as a patient, and she asked me to come back in one month for my annual check-up. The following month, I went in and we talked a bit more and she put in a lab order for a normal blood panel at the lab located in the same building (which I've always gone to for my lab work). A few weeks later we had a follow-up appointment to review the results and I was on my way. About two months later, I received a bill for $800 for lab work. I called the lab to ask what happened and they said I needed to talk to my doctor because it sounds like it was coded as diagnostic instead of preventative. I attempted to call my doctor, but no one was picking up at the desk despite it being during business hours. Instead, I called my health insurance and explained the situation and they said they needed to confirm with the doctor, so I gave them the number and they attempted to contact their billing dept. The person at the billing department informed us that the nurse practitioner I had seen no longer works with them, so they're unable to change it, and thus the insurance rep said they couldn't change it. I called the lab again to explain that the doctor was no longer there and see if they had any options, and they said that someone from the clinic needs to re-code it for them to process it as preventative. I spoke with the clinic again and they said they couldn't change it, but after some pressuring they said they'd pass along my number to the HR department at the clinic since the issue is a result of a former employee who is no longer there. I don't have high hopes for this bearing fruit. The kicker is that my girlfriend had her annual check up with the same nurse practitioner a day or two after me and also received a very high bill. We'd though the issue was that she'd gone to a different lab than we normally did, but ultimately the nurse practitioner was still around to say that it was coded incorrectly so we were able to sort it out. Since my bill was a bit slower to arrive, I hadn't realized we'd both been coded incorrectly. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can say or do that can help sort this out? We spent the last month evacuated due to a fire and an additional $800 bill for a clerical error at a clinic is not something I have any wiggle room to pay at the moment. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:53 PM PDT I am month to month on my lease and apartment hunting, and have discovered a carpenter ant/termite infestation in my current apartment. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 11:27 AM PDT Hello all, I'm hoping someone here can help me On 9/1 my tree from my property came down and totaled my 2 vehicles. Fortunately the trunk missed the house but it caused lots of damage to the grass/ left a huge mess. The day I called my insurance agency they said to take photos and keep invoices from the tree removal and they would pay me back. I made sure to double & triple check that they would in fact reimburse me. I paid $6600 to get the tree removed and the insurance agent came got a home inspection. The home inspector (home policy) said it falls under auto policy. So I called my auto policy and they said it would be covered, then the manager told me they would only put for the tree to be lifted off my vehicles and dropped onto my property. My homeowner policy is denying the claim but is there anything I could do since they specifically told me to keep the invoices and they would reimburse me? If it wasn't for the agent telling me that I'll get reimbursed I would've waited or attempted to cut it myself. I appreciate any help or advice, thank you [link] [comments] |
Cancelled A Policy And Agent Was Using Scared Tactics. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:38 AM PDT So i went ahead and cancelled a policy because im going to store my car for a while. And as i got on the phone the agent quickly said " you know you can get your license revoked right? For not having insurance , we are going to notify DMV about your cancellation and after a month you will be surcharged and will have to file an SR22 " and i asked "even if i have my vehicle stored? He answers "yes it doesn't matter the vehicle is still in your name" Im mind blown with what these people are saying... So im going to get my license revoked for having my vehicle stored in my garage? That is some bs What do you guys think? Location : Texas. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:32 PM PDT I live in an RV and tow it around the us. I have a permanent address in Texas. Is there any kind of auto (and possibly rv) insurance that caters to this kind of lifestyle? [link] [comments] |
