For professionals: What are some reasons you have seen interns not get a return offer?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:27 PM PDT

Recently there was a post about someone not getting a return offer from a big four firm. I want to get some ideas on what not to do for my upcoming internship.

When you're in public accounting it's kind of funny when the accountants at a client can't tell you why they do anything beyond "that's how I've always done it". When you go to industry and they become your coworkers it's infuriating.

Anyone else feel like this after having a busy season go from Jan-Oct and you're planning for next year already?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I've been in these situations more frequently as I gain more experience. Before that, I couldn't figure things out on my own.

    Big 4: No return internship/offer

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 11:49 AM PDT

I had an internship at PwC this summer going into my junior year. I was always online and attentive and eager to help out whenever I could. If I made a mistake I was reassured: "it's part of the learning experience". My talent coordinator told me unless something went terribly wrong I would get another internship next year. Flash forward to the last day of my internship: my intern exit meeting is with a partner I never met who tells me unfortunately I won't be receiving an offer for an internship or full-time. Following the meeting, I reach out to different members of my team and everybody ghosts me. By the next morning, my PwC email is deleted and the only way I can contact anyone is through my personal email. My relationship leader eventually reaches out to me saying he was surprised I got the internship in the first place considering I'm only 20 and that I should work at a smaller firm before trying to get back in the big four. He also told me he didn't know somebody could intern twice at PwC. I really liked my relationship leader, but I don't believe for one second he actually believes the nonsense he spewed. I know a ton of people who had internships with big 4 going into their junior year and most of them got returning offers. Regardless of that, I'm concerned about how this will look for employers. Will they assume I didn't get a returning offer? I feel like it tarnishes my resume and I was better off interning at a mid-size firm. I'm not sure what to do. If anyone has read through this post in its entirety I really appreciate. Please let me know if you have any advice for me. Thank you for listening to my ted talk.

    First Paycheck

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 05:30 PM PDT

    Just a rant…

I got my first paycheck from a top 10 PA firm with all the deductions and taxes breakdown and honestly…I'm disappointed. I finally understand why people go to industry from a financial pov. Lol oh well. Looks like I can't move out yet 😅

I want to start studying for my CPA exam

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 06:12 PM PDT

What is the best way for a newly grad to start studying for the CPA exam. Take it I'm a noob at everything so far and explain like I'm five. Which part should I study for first and how long is recommended studying for each part for someone who is a try hard?

Do you regret getting into accounting?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 07:09 PM PDT

Recently graduated college and really regretting my decision of choosing to study accounting. Not sure if it's just where I live (Vancouver Canada), but the job market seems like crap.

Entry level positions pay $18-$25 CAD an hour ($15-$20 USD), require a bachelor's degree, and have 100+ applicants competing for them. Getting an industry position seems near impossible, granted the lack of experience is an obvious factor.

Not only that, but realizing the Big 4 isn't anywhere near as glamorous as they're made out to be, really made reality sink in for me.

I wish I could go back in time and choose something like software engineering or IT to study.

Spoke to a friend of mine who quit his job as an auditor at PWC to work as a piano tutor and he felt the same way. Another friend of mine who works in tax just responded "I don't like to think about it" when I asked if he had any regret.

Right now I feel my only hope at life is to use what I've learned in accounting to start some small business.

Should i join compliance or consulting at Big 4?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2021 08:05 PM PDT

As a fresh accounting graduate, i applied for EY GCR Graduate Recruitment.

In the posting advertisement, it stated job roles with Tax.

When filling the candidate form, there were priority options that a candidate had to choose. Hence i chose business consulting as first and strategy as second. Is there a chance for them to place me either in these two?

I got to know that GCR means global compliance and reporting.

In the interview, can i ask them to place me in business consulting or Strategy? As i don't have an interest in compliance.

Or should i reapply again to the strategy role opening (which opened a month after the compliance one).

    Please help.

I gained so much weight ever since starting in PA

    Posted: 27 Oct 2021 07:08 PM PDT

I am seriously depressed over how much weight I gained. And this depressing feeling is making me eat. The only thing I look forward to now in my life is eating because I forget the stress and misery.

How can I lose weight from PA?
